Event Log: Memories Past

Have you ever looked through someone else's eyes? Heard through their ears, spoken with their tongue? The gods have tried to teach some of you empathy, but it's time you learned the hard way, exactly what the others here have been through. For a week, every time you brush skin to skin with someone, you'll experience a memory of theirs: happy, sad, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that it feels real to you.

The first touch may come as a surprise- it lasts only for a split second but may feel like an eternity, where you're trapped in someone else's memory. After that, it could be more expected, and some may even figure out how to control it and share specific scenes from their past with others. Or, you might wear gloves and long sleeve shirts for awhile, nobody's judging.

Maybe curtail the handholding for awhile- or go right ahead, if that's your thing. After all, you never really know somebody unless you've walked a mile in their shoes, right?

[Jo shrugs and sticks her hands in her pockets.]

We'll figure it out.

[George scuffs her foot against the ground]

I hope so.

[knifecollecting]

Come on, we're too awesome for it to not work.

[toiletseat_girl]

[she finally cracks a smile]

You're awesome. I'm ehhhhh. [she holds up and waggles her hand in the air]

[knifecollecting]

[Jo smiles back, laughing quietly.]

Come on, you're not that bad.

[toiletseat_girl]

[she laughs and rakes a hand through her hair]

I am. I so am. I'm greedy, I hate responsibility, and I do whatever it takes to get out of it.

[back home, that was true. here is another matter]

[knifecollecting]

[Jo laughs.]

Yeah, sooner or later you'll learn that it's easier to just do the responsible thing.

[George looks unrepentant]

Meh. Responsibility. That's like a dirty word.

[never mind the fact that she puts in her hours at the Clinic and the Lab faithfully]

[knifecollecting]

Just use another word for it. It'll be fine.

[Jo knows. She sees it. She's proud.]

[toiletseat_girl]

[still dubious]

If you say so.

[knifecollecting]

I do. We'll manage.

[toiletseat_girl]

Okay.

[a pause]

...is it okay if I hug you now?

[knifecollecting]

[Well...]

What if we get another memory burst?

[toiletseat_girl]

[she pouts]

We'll tuck our hands inside our jackets and make sure we never touch skin.

[knifecollecting]

You really want a hug that bad?

[Nerd.

Jo laughs and slips her sleeves down a bit to cover her hands.]

Come on.

[toiletseat_girl]

I dunno. Maybe. Yes.

[a little bit.

[and she tucks her hands inside her sleeves]

Okay.

[and goes in for a hug]

[knifecollecting]

[It's not that Jo is against hugs, she's just not used to them from George. Maybe she should work on changing that.

She keeps her head up, just in case, but squeezes George as hard as she can.]

[toiletseat_girl]

[George is not used to hugs, period. her mom never was a hugger. her father was, but then Reggie came along and ruined everything for eight year old George. or she let them be ruined.

so she hugs back as hard as she can (while still ensuring that no actual physical contact is made)]

[knifecollecting]

[Jo stays still for a long while, enjoying both the hug and the warmth it brings.

Eventually, she does pull back, laughing quietly.]

Good enough?

[and she's still as well. it's nice to be hugged. she'd forgotten how nice it could be.

and when she pulls away, she's blushing bright red because she is a dork who's bad at emotions]

Yeah. That--works. Thanks.

[George is allowed to ask for hugs. Jo wouldn't normally think to offer them to her.]

No problem. [After all, what else are fake big sisters for?]

[no, she's not. she's not allowed to ask for anything. especially hugs]

I guess. [what indeed?]

[knifecollecting]

[Jo better not hear her say that.]

What, was it not a good hug? [Come on, George. Act excited.]

[one fundamental rule of the universe is that George Lass Does Not Deserve Nice Things]

No, no, no, it was great. Best hug I've had in years. Like actual years.
