World Log: Tundra Arrival

What: The log for the city's arrivel on the ice planet

You all get some warning to prepare, which is great. A little time to stock up on supplies, make sure everything's where it supposed to be, call your friends in from their fishing boats. And then the city moves. It happens in the blink of an eye - one moment you're on islands, surrounded by ocean, and the next? The next you're surrounded by frozen ground, the temperature has dropped significantly, and even the sky looks different. The air has a bite to it, that familiar feeling telling you it's thinking about snowing soon. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday soon.

The city has rearranged itself back into that old, familiar shape, instead of spread out across islands like it was a moment ago. Maybe that'll make things easier for you, maybe it won't, but it also means the return of the lake and river that used to bisect the city - only now they're frozen over. This climate also means it'll be hard for any plants not otherwise protected to survive - and that you, too, will start feeling that cold if you're away from a warm place for too long.

And warm places might be in short supply, because when the city moved the gods did not. What does that mean for you? Well, whatever supplies are in the shops at the moment the city moves are the only ones left. No new food supplies, no new clothing, nothing. In addition, the power across the whole city is out, including water and heating. Anything else powered or supplied by gods (the hot springs, the mopeds, what's left of the orchard, the armory, the GPS) will not work.

You're on your own. Try not to die.

When I was a kid, sure. Have to do something when it's cold as balls and you're bored to tears. I never had to make my own skates though.

Fair warning, the best part of skating in the snow was going home and taking a super hot shower. Which apparently isn't a thing anymore.

[ Oh, man. Headshot. She shouldn't look as pleased about that. She shouldn't, but she does. Especially when he's wearing such a sour expression about it. This is going to be fun. ]

Heck yeah, dude! You've never been in a snowball fight before? They're great.

[ As she speaks, she's already piling some snow together in her hands to pack into another ball. He has the opportunity to form on himself, if he likes. She's purposefully being slow to give him a chance. How kind of her! ]

I'm pretty good at 'em. Obviously.

[ Thankfully, the ice seems sturdy enough that she isn't exactly concerned after a couple tentative steps. She walks more akin to a newborn deer than a person and, of course, slips as soon as she jumps at the call out. There's a squeak and a panic that surges through her suddenly - What if the ice breaks under the impact, I can't swim - but it only lasts for a second.

There is no contact against a hard, icy surface. There is no cracking to be heard. Instead, she's being suspended up by someone's arms. She's a lot better about unexpected touch these days thankfully and so all she seems to be is tense from the worry of falling. ]

Uh- [ So eloquent. She has a lot of questions, okay. ] Yeah, fine, I just- Did you just teleport?

[ Had Regis been able to do that? She thinks she'd have remembered that. ]

[unphase]

No, they really weren't. Both places and this one especially make the islands look good.

[this is very true. she'll have to be strategic in her phasing to avoid the rows of sharp teeth, but she figures she can manage.

she laughs] Yeah, I'm hoping it won't be that long. They know where we're supposed to be, so if they have any brains in their heads, it shouldn't take them too long to get here.

Me, neither. I'm thinking we're gonna get tag-teamed by several at once, which is always fun. Nothing like drastic mood swings to make a shitty day even more shitty.

I'm pretty sure mine are, too, so don't worry about it. It's a mental high five. That works.

[unphase]

I have. Give me a minute. [she pulls out and fusses with her phone, pulling up the pictures. what he'll see is a large, furry creature with its mouth wide open, two rows of teeth showing, like a shark's] This is what they look like.

Love's a cloud of what looks like energy. Pink, sparkly. I'm guessing that that's what the aliens look like when they're not trying to look human.

I believe I saw that one as well! I mean to hunt one down. The meat will keep us warm, and perhaps someone here can tan the hide.

[ Kettara is a practical soul. ]

They sound beautiful! I shall have to look and see if there are any here.

[oldtonew]

Not long. Only a few months.

[ She eyes him up and down curiously. He smells strange, like chemicals and not flesh and blood. ]

Why do you look human?

[ Because she wants to know. ]

[oldtonew]

[ Kettara huffs, resting her chin on her knees. ]

You make no sense. Why wouldn't you eat them, if you're afraid of starving?

[missiondeterminant]

[Connor is quiet a moment, mentally debating with himself whether or not to tell her, but he thinks it's okay. Not that people can't be huge hypocrites, but he thinks with her attitude he probably doesn't need to worry.]

I was made by humans. They prefer if we look like them.

[And act like them, but not too much. Humans really don't like it when they start thinking and feeling for themselves.]

Oh.

[ That seems a sad fate to Kettara, to be created in the image of something hateful. She looks away. ]

Where I am from, some creatures like you can choose their appearance. Sometimes they copy other beings. Sometimes not.

[Gren's wandered out onto the lake to take a look; the ice is thick enough that he's not too worried about breaking through, and even if it did, the cold water wouldn't be too much of an issue for him. One of the few benefits of being a weird, old water monster thing that just looks like a human.]

[He's looking down at the ice, trying to discern what sort of things are swimming underneath the frozen surface. They're big, and probably nasty because that's the kind of luck that they all have, but sometimes it's worthwhile to risk hunting large game.]

[Gren looks up when he's addressed by this clean-cut looking guy.]

Yeah, I see 'em. [He walks a few steps, following the path that one of the shadows swims in until it slips too deep to see.] Fuckin' shit-ton of ice to get through, though.

Yes I haven't, have I? I don't want to brag but it is quite impressive.

[ He sure does like to brag but his ego is the size of the planet. He just lets out a soft grumble as his wings droop a little behind him. ]

I suppose there is some...merit to what you're saying. [ Even if they are inferior as a species...they still act like some Decepticons he knows. ]

But don't tell me you actually enjoy talking to them.

[unphase]

Good luck, they're faster than they look. [she avoids mention of the meat for she's a vegetarian and giving that up would be a huge sacrifice] Someone around here has to know how to tan the hide. I sure don't, but someone should?

[and Tinya is a romantic with a practical streak. or is it the other way around?]

They are, especially as they swim. They can go as fast as lightning. Well, almost. [she giggles] If we're lucky, we'll find something like them here.

[fogsong]

[ George's cheeks seem pink and Sharon wonders if she's getting cold. ]

Because you're an alcoholic? [ She's just joking, the left side of her lips lifting in a smirk. That's not a funny joke, Sharon, people here have some serious problems. ]

Wait, really? Have you written anything here? [ Because Sharon would be happy to take a peek. ] I don't know if you've noticed but we're lacking in the books department. [ That's definitely not a talent Sharon has; she loves to read but she can't write for shit. ]

[Connor doesn't hold any particular feelings about his appearance; it doesn't bother him that he looks human, even if he finds he doesn't like the fact that he was so specifically designed to be appealing to them. It's useful, but also vaguely unpleasant to consider too much.]

What do you mean 'creatures like me'?

[He's curious, not judgemental, wondering exactly what she might think he is.]

[she wishes that's all it was.

with a good-natured eye roll] No. It's the people watching. I like to watch people.

I've--just some short stuff. [augh, panic! panic at the idea of Sharon reading her stuff! because it's all about thinly veiled Hadriel residents and panic!] Actually, I have three, if you wanna borrow one of 'em. [George's little short stories and vignettes aren't bad. a little stream-of-consciousness, but not bad]

[ Starscream paying attention to humans?! That'll never happen but he does file it away for later. ]

Powers, yes, yes so I've seen. [ Have a flippant wave of his hand in a dismissive gesture. ]

Unless that information is going to somehow keep us from freezing I don't think there's any good use for a car or oil considering we have neither.

[ Meanwhile Starscream is just trying to figure out what the hell is lurking beneath the surface of the lake as a whole. Because knowing their luck it's going to rise up and attack them all at some point so...best to be prepared for that, right? He'll happen upon Peter while walking the length of the lake on the 23rd though. ]

And what exactly is it you are wasting materials to make this time?

[what about elves? would he pay attention to elves?]

Really. 'Cause that's not what it sounded like. [have an unimpressed look]

Yeah, that wasn't what we were talking about, in case you forgot. We were talking about the fact that human food couldn't be used to power anything. I pointed out a time when it did. Besides, we do have cooking oil in the shops. Might as well use it for something if we can't use it for cooking.

I need to do something with my hands or I'm going to go insane. You might have just ruined the skating part for me, though. Ugh, having no water or power sucks.

I kind of like the not being stuck on some islands part, but that's about it.

[Peter might just get bit. It's cool, he heals fast.]

I'm not too worried. I don't think they would have sent us here if they didn't have a way to get to us.

Ugh. Time to learn how to not have emotions for a while.

[a trifle--just a smidge!--smugly] That never bothered me. I could fly from one to the other much faster than those boats could travel.

[a better solution would be not being bitten in the first place?]

Right. Because if they don't, they're starving, we're starving, and that's no fun for anyone.

I wouldn't recommend apathy. Sure, it has its perks like shit not really getting to you and not giving a fuck about pretty much anything, but its perks are also its drawbacks.
