Throughout the next few days, you may find yourself plagued by visions and dreams of back home. The dreams will be lifelike and difficult to tell apart from reality, as the world will be constructed from what you remember of your world. However, unlike usual dreams, you won't be present, and will find yourself unable to be seen or heard by those around you.

The dreams are vivid reminders of what might happen in a world without you: a world in which you disappeared when coming to Hadriel, a world which desperately needs you back for some reason or another. You may see your parents putting up missing posters, your significant other moving onto their next relationship, or even your hated villain finally taking over the world without you there to stop them.

When the vision leaves, you're back here and nothing about the city has changed. Though maybe you have a different outlook on it now...

Not quite.

[ Ephemera tips his head back. Breathes. Wonders if maybe it shouldn't be Washington or Tucker who explains this, someone who Donut actually has a reason to trust. ]

Okay. You look at me, and...I dunno, because you're nice or whatever, you see a person. Maybe not a person you'd like, but there you go. Someone who can be hurt, who wants things that have nothing to do with you. That's normal.

[ Sometimes it makes things harder when you look at an enemy and see them as people instead of targets to be eliminated. But that was the war. He got over that. ]

Someone like Felix, they'd look at a stranger and they only see how that stranger's gonna be useful. They don't see a person. They see a tool that's useful to them or something that might be fun to toy with for a little while. And when that tool's not fun anymore, or not useful, then there's no point to it. So it might as well die. You understand?

[ His lower lip wobbles. ]

Like when Wash shot me because I wasn't useful like Simmons.

[ Ephemera is quiet for a moment. Then he nods. ]

Yeah. Except Washington got better. People like Felix don't get better. They just pretend.

But, you got better, too.

[ Locus, too. ]

Why can't he?

Sometimes people get mean because they're hurting. Like I did.

[ Ephemera sighs. Wishes someone else was handling this conversation because he's probably going to fuck it up, somehow. ]

Maybe Felix could get better. I dunno. But sometimes it doesn't matter what happens to someone, or what doesn't. Sometimes they're just wired that way and nothing's gonna change it.

That's not true. People change. Sometimes it's not a good change, but they still do. You can't just call someone a lost cause. Everyone deserves a second chance.

Maybe.

[ He sighs. Rubs his hand over his good eye. ]

Was a time I would've said I didn't deserve one, didn't want one. Then I ended up here, and - I dunno. I guess you'e gotta balance the chance that someone can change for the better between the damage that'll happen if they don't.

You didn't. [ He agrees. ] You were mean.

[ Last time, Donut heard about him, he didn't deserve one. He would have killed him and not felt bad about it. Not when he was trying to kill them. He might be dumb, but he's still a soldier. If someone shot at you, you shoot right back. ]

People deserve a second chance if they change, not before.

[ He looks at him. ]

You weren't mean to me when I first got here. You didn't even try to kill me.

[ ie; a demonstration of change. ]

[ Ephemera drops his hand, watching Donut for a moment. ]

Yeah. I was.

[ Sharkface did a whole lot of bad things. Killed kids, killed people who didn't deserve it. He doesn't pretend otherwise. And there's a part of him that's still Sharkface and always will be. Part of it never goes away. ]

Guess you've thought about this before, huh?

[ He wipes at his eyes, removing the lingering wetness. He's feeling a lot better than he did before. ]

Blue Team. Wash. Carolina. They were all scary at one point. Shot at me, and given the chance I shot right back at them. [ He shrugs, he's a soldier. ] But, at one point they all changed. They stopped shooting at us. We got to talking and if I held a grudge against them, then we wouldn't be friends today.

[ He dabs at his eyes with an unused handkerchief. They're red and puffy but he's no longer crying at least.]

You've got a point.

[ He smiles. Briefly. ]

Like you said, Washington changed. I don't think he's mad at you, Donut.

[ He's silent for a moment, eyes on the ground, not looking at him. ]

Maybe...

[ He twists the handkerchief in his hands, not quite believing that. ]

I better go. I have to water my tomato plant before it gets dark.

Okay.

[ Ephemera rubs at his bad eye. It's itching. ]

Just. Talk to him or something. Try that.

[ He just nods and walks away. ]
