Event Log: Is It a Wonderful Life?

Throughout the next few days, you may find yourself plagued by visions and dreams of back home. The dreams will be lifelike and difficult to tell apart from reality, as the world will be constructed from what you remember of your world. However, unlike usual dreams, you won't be present, and will find yourself unable to be seen or heard by those around you.

The dreams are vivid reminders of what might happen in a world without you: a world in which you disappeared when coming to Hadriel, a world which desperately needs you back for some reason or another. You may see your parents putting up missing posters, your significant other moving onto their next relationship, or even your hated villain finally taking over the world without you there to stop them.

When the vision leaves, you're back here and nothing about the city has changed. Though maybe you have a different outlook on it now...

[she's willing to provide info]

Thedas. I'm from Earth of 1989 and their technology is from like . . . 1589. And I'm good with a bow. I was trained by a master.

That's right.

[ Knock Out sounds proud of the fact, even a bit defiant, which doesn't match a response to her tone... almost like it's ingrained.

He's never heard of Thedas, but it's a big universe - and multiverse. He's got a decent idea of the time periods of human eras thanks to the amount of media he's consumed, although to him, 400 years is nothing. Not even 5 vorns. How incredibly short their lifespans are. ]

You'll have to show me sometime. Someone here?

So you can defend yourself and[why shouldn't he be proud? fighting's great, but a healer's arts? she's been given the impression that those are much harder to learn.

yes, their lives are short, like candleflame. burning brigtly for a time before extinguishing themselves. or being extinguished]

Yeah, I can show you what I can do. And my teacher's name is Cecily. She's the Inquisitor, so she's really important back home. In Thedas.

[ He files all that away for perusal later, not having met anyone by that name yet. Then again, he's not exactly been going out of his way to make new friends since his arrival, and this spate of visions hasn't put him in an overly chatty mood. But his conversation with Laura is a good distraction, and he realizes he hadn't even given the visions a passing processor line for the last little while. ]

Wait, you're going to Thedas because you... can't go back where you're from.

[ He hadn't even known that was an option. That wasn't in the welcome packet. ]

[it's cool, Cecily hasn't exactly been in a chipper mood since she came back from Thedas last. she thinks that Cecily was expecting to stay that time, but the fake gods of Hadriel weren't done with her yet.

she taps her nose in a "that's it!" gesture] Exactly right. Can't go back when you're dead, right? So I'm having to make my own way.

[it's an assumption that many here seem to hold]

[ For some reason, what she says appears to have him thinking, turning the shaft of the energon prod back and forth in his servos. Then, appearing to remember he's even holding it, closes up the casing. ]

Let's give this a try, shall we?

[she watches curiously as the casing closes on the energon prod]

Sounds good. On what? [she winks] Not me, I hope.

No, we wouldn't want that.

[ He gets to his pedes and stretches his struts, pressing the section of the energon prod that telescopes it down to its collapsed size and then back to full length again. Satisfied, he points it away from Laura and activates it. Immediately, blue lightning snaps and cracks from the tip, spitting sparks that scent the air with ozone. ]

Of course not.

[and she grins and laughs happily as he engages his weapon. she's never seen anything like it before and it's kinda cool! okay, really cool, but you didn't hear that from her]

Nice. Wouldn't wanna be on the receiving end of that.

Hey. When you're done showing me what you can do, want me to show you what I can do?

[ Her laughter prompts him to show off a little (more than usual), spinning the still sparking weapon in one servo. He's undeniably deft with the weapon, a comfortableness there speaking to a long, long time of handling such a thing. Then he'll deactivate it and stash it away in his subspace, apparently satisfied with the repairs. ]

That seems only fair. As long as you're not planning to use my red finish as a target either.

[she is really not going to complain about him showing off, not when it's so fucking awesome to watch. he handles his weapon as though he's used it a million times, but the times still never grow old.

she laughs merrily] Abso-fucking-lutely not! Nope, they have standard targets where I was thinking of.

[ A new part of the city he hadn't seen yet, then. Even better, since Knock Out was still doing periodic exploring on his own. ]

Lead on.

Sure, it's this way.

[she leads him to the range that Pratt had set up. there are practice dummies and targets to shoot at. they're all made of wood, not metal, so they're fragile.

she moves on to one of the archery targets set up, moves a fairly long distance away from it, then slings her bow off of her shoulder, pull out an arrow, and nock it.

she draws back the arrow and fires. it hits dead in the center of the target, but she's not done. she rapidly fires a succession of arrows, all of them landing in a tight circle around the original arrow]

So? [she says expectantly] Not bad, huh?

[ Knock Out is well and properly impressed by that demonstration, if he's honest. That'd be quite a feat even with something like a gun - with a tool as primitive as bow and arrows, it seems even moreso. ]

"Not bad" she says! You're a sharpshooter.

[she grins as she lowers the bow. she wasn't sure she could do it, but she did. between this and the mammoth stampede, she's pretty proud of how well she did]

Thank you. I had one helluva teacher. And like I said, it's not a good idea to be defenseless around here.

[ Knock Out had wisely stayed far away from any of the stampede, not interested in scuffing up his finish by tangling with those beasts. ]

Your skill reminds me of an old colleague of mine, she was quite the shot as well.

Are attacks like those ones really that common?

[Laura wouldn't have gotten involved if she hadn't come across one of her best friends in a tight spot]

Yeah? What was she like?

No, not really. Usually, the only time we have to fight is on new people day when the Door tosses out some random creature along with the new people.

Moonracer was...

[ How to describe her? Idealistic, certainly, but that wasn't the quality that Laura reminds Knock Out of. It's more... ]

She had a way of seeing things in a better light than most. And what she didn't like, she worked to change.

[no, Laura wouldn't call herself idealistic. she's not as jaded as she used to be, but she'd still consider herself far from idealistic]

She sounds like someone who'd be good to know. But, "was?" Did something happen to her?

[ Knock Out shakes his head quickly. ]

Nothing that I know of. We were colleagues before the war, but we ended up choosing different sides. It's a big universe, who knows where she might be now?

[ Velocitron was decimated, Cybertron a burnt-out husk. Where might Moonracer have gone, if she were still fighting? The war had surely continued in many places that weren't Earth. Unfortunately, that brings his thoughts back to the visions that have been pressing on them all, and that's an unwelcome thought, which shows on his features. ]

It sure is. Bigger and wilder than I'd ever imagined.

[she notices the shift of his features and ventures out]

...something you wanna talk about? Or be distracted from?

[ Quickly he shifts back to his usual easy expression. When did he get maudlin? ]

The war? That's a four-million year old story, you know. Not exactly a light bedtime story. No, I was thinking about these pesky...

[ He waves a clawed hand vaguely about his head to indicate the visions. ]

[since he found himself stranded on a planet full of fake god jerks who eat emotions]

--oh. The weird shit? Is this the first time the fake gods have screwed with your head?

[ Pit slagging fake gods. ]

You mean other than my being brought here? Yes, apparently it is.

[ Please tell him this isn't going to be common... ]
