Throughout the next few days, you may find yourself plagued by visions and dreams of back home. The dreams will be lifelike and difficult to tell apart from reality, as the world will be constructed from what you remember of your world. However, unlike usual dreams, you won't be present, and will find yourself unable to be seen or heard by those around you.

The dreams are vivid reminders of what might happen in a world without you: a world in which you disappeared when coming to Hadriel, a world which desperately needs you back for some reason or another. You may see your parents putting up missing posters, your significant other moving onto their next relationship, or even your hated villain finally taking over the world without you there to stop them.

When the vision leaves, you're back here and nothing about the city has changed. Though maybe you have a different outlook on it now...

Fencing got damaged and some of the targets were smashed to pieces. Drake's been out there fixing up the dummies though, so at least some of it is functional.

Now that we've got heat back and don't have to conserve wood for fuel, it shouldn't be too hard to fix what's damaged at the range.

And fortunately my house didn't get banged up too bad. So I think i got off easy. How about you?

Yeah, he told me.

[ Drake's handy, good at fixing stuff. And it gives him something to focus on, take his mind off all the other shit.

Ephemera shrugs at the question. ]

Took some hits, but my armor's okay. Still got a place to sleep, so that's a bonus. I came out okay.

I didn't see anyone on the network complaining their house got stampeded over so maybe there wasn't as much damage as I expected.

[But to be fair he hasn't actually gone looking to see how the rest of the town is looking. Nothing seemed to be on fire or in pieces so he didn't investigate too thoroughly.]

Might've been on purpose, if the gods were involved. Can't eat if everybody's freezing to death.

[ Another shrug. ]

Or it was dumb luck.

If they cared about us they wouldn't have abandoned us in the first place.

They must have other things to eat. Maybe they're fine without us but we're a guilty pleasure, like chocolate.

Think their definition of "care" is a little different.

[ Ephemera doesn't take it personally. Just how things are. ]

Could be. Honestly, not much would surprise me at this point.

I guess the bare minimum is shelter and water, so we have that. Maybe they think they're doing a good job.

[Shrug]

We're all just speculating, I don't think we'll ever really find out these things.

That bother you?

[ It's asked curiously. Ephemera doesn't care, but he knows other people do. ]

Which part?

Both, I guess.

[ Another shrug. ]

People're adaptable. Give 'em half a chance and they'll figure out a way to make it. But there's a lot we don't know about this place, or the gods.

It doesn't bother me that people can get by on the bare minimum, that's the prepper way. But it'd be nice to not have to ration food, or hoard soup.

[ Lies, he'll hoard soup forever. ]

The never finding out about these ... whatever they are who brought us here, that bugs me a little. I don't like not knowing what I'm up against.

[ Ephemera's been working in survival mode for so long he honestly doesn't remember anything else. But that's him. He wishes it didn't have to be that way for everyone else, though. ]

Yeah. It's better to have an enemy you can hit. All this waiting, not knowing, that's the hard part.

Not everyone is meant to be a soldier.

[Some people are meant to be sacrifices. Or food. Or fodder. A myriad of non-soldier options.]

Have you seen any of them in person? Tinya was telling me that Love is like a blob of smoke or something.

Easy to forget that sometimes, [ Ephemera admits, running a hand through his hair. It's getting longer, though not quite enough to tie back. It's a change. Something different. ] Me? Nah. Couple others have, said Hope looks like a regular guy.

That's what happens when war is all you know.

[Or when it becomes all you know.]

I've been avoiding their temples, though someone told me that Rage will give you more ammo if you kill monsters for her. So I may have to check that out.

[But he's not looking forward to it. Bargaining with them is like believing in them and he's not down for that.]

Used to think that was a good thing. Kept the whole universe simple.

[ Too simple, in truth. He knows better now. ]

Oh, that's true. Haven't met anyone with the gear or know-how to manufacture bullets, so that's where we go.

Don't have to think, just react. There's an appeal, but you do it for too long and you lose the ability to do anything else. You become hollow. A tool for others to use.

[Speaking from experience.]

I've made plenty back home, but I don't know where I'd get the raw materials here. Unless we find a sulfur mine and someone has a forge.

[ Ephemera watches Pratt for a moment, but decides not to ask. Sounds like a rough place, Montana. ]

No shit? Huh. I guess we could ask the gods for the components, but I dunno if that's more or less effective than just trading bodies for ammo like we already do.
