Event Log: Is It a Wonderful Life?

Throughout the next few days, you may find yourself plagued by visions and dreams of back home. The dreams will be lifelike and difficult to tell apart from reality, as the world will be constructed from what you remember of your world. However, unlike usual dreams, you won't be present, and will find yourself unable to be seen or heard by those around you.

The dreams are vivid reminders of what might happen in a world without you: a world in which you disappeared when coming to Hadriel, a world which desperately needs you back for some reason or another. You may see your parents putting up missing posters, your significant other moving onto their next relationship, or even your hated villain finally taking over the world without you there to stop them.

When the vision leaves, you're back here and nothing about the city has changed. Though maybe you have a different outlook on it now...

[no, it's certainly not what she means. in her world, Anora was deposed and imprisoned with no chance for reprieve for refusing to swear fealty to Alistair.

and a small line forms between her brows] Mages in Redcliffe? I don't. . . understand. Why would the mages be in Redcliffe? [she'd left the Circle wanting to do something about the treatment of mages, but this has her rather confused]

You remember when I told you that I'm from ten years into your future, don't you? There are a lot of things that have changed.

[ There were always mages at Kinloch, but this goes far beyond that. ]

Yes--yes, of course I remember. How could I forget? Did Alistair give the mages refuge there?

[because she remembers Alistair emerging from the Circle Tower as concerned about the mages as she was. it would make sense for him to try to settle them somewhere else. but if it meant the removal of Arl Teagan...?]

Well, the long and short of it is that there are rebel mages who have been using the area as their stronghold. It was chaotic enough everywhere that removing them was not possible, at least before the Inquisition became involved.

[ That'd been the case for a lot of things, unfortunately. ]

I--I see. I suppose that being given a taste of freedom that there are those who would take advantage of it to the detriment of others. You . . . were able to help the mages, were you not?

[for she remembers the Circle tower, remembers children as young as Oren there. she saw his face in every one of them, saw the templars ready to strike them all down and rebelled against it with all she could muster]

[closerift]

We weren't there to help the mages. [ She replies with a sort of crispness, recognizing that Mariane has no reason to know the depths of the destruction in the Hinterlands because of the mages. ] We were there to stop the mages - and the templars - from slaughtering innocent people. Refugees.

[ Of course, you can only save so many...and there were so many there who needed aid. ]

Refugees? But, from where? [the more she hears of this future, the less she likes it. the less she likes it, the more she blames herself for not being good enough to keep it from happening]

[closerift]

People who were disposed from all over because of the fighting. People in both Ferelden and Orlais have been trying to avoid being caught in the middle.

[ With varying degrees of success. ]

[she shakes her head] I can't believe Alistair would allow such a thing. Not when he knows what mages are capable of and of the abuses templars can mete out.

[closerift]

[ Maker. How many times is she going to have to lie about what Alistair is or is not doing in her version of Thedas? ]

...Right. Well, in any event, it's nothing to worry about while we're here. Hadriel has its own lovely set of problems, and there's just not enough room to squeeze in thoughts of Redcliffe.

[ Otherwise, she may have to slip away soon to avoid 'spoiling' the young Warden. ]

[forever. quite literally forever. she's violently protective of Alistair and it took all of her willpower to let him duel Loghain alone]

I see. I simply . . . want to know what I'll have to deal with, as queen.

[because the thought of being dragged back into the Grey Wardens is anathema to her]

You'll come into that in your own time.

[ Cecily rises to her feet for now, though, glancing out over the expanse beneath the watchtower. ]

...For now, though, I ought to keep up my patrol. Will you take my place up here for a while, if you have the time?

I suppose. But I can't help wanting to know of my country's future.

[Mariane watches as she does so, dark eyes wide and solemn]

I have the time. Guarding this tower will provide no trial.
