Intro Log: Cinema Sins

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for January
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: January 10th-13th
Warnings: None

It's freezing down to your bones, but nothing around is going to help with that. The closest thing to warmth might be some horrific movie posters. Some of these movies have never existed, but they're cringey and awful all the same. Maybe once you get back home, you can cleanse your pallet with a trip to the theater, but until then you'll just have to wonder who in their right mind could have authorized a movie called The Thrilling Three, apparently about a trio of clowns in the Wild West. Maybe. It's hard to tell from the poster.

If nothing else, maybe the paper will be good for kindling for the Rathalos flying overhead. These wyvernlike creatures are almost always in flight and are capable of shooting fireballs down to the icy ground below, so at least there's that to warm you up? Before you get too comfy, be sure to notice the extremely sharp talons, sturdy scales, and very sharp teeth they sport, which may also give you some trouble.

Maybe it's time to find some cover? They might not be able to fit into the smaller rooms in the building, so now would be a great time to run for those.

Once you've finished dreaming about a warm beach vacation, feel free to look around. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers January 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[ Drake is stationed on watch this arrivals day, as he's not quite in top form to help out in the colosseum. Unfortunately for everyone, though, this month's creatures can fly... he's got a pistol and a bow and is better with the former than the latter but with Rage awol ammo is still scarce so bow it is. His sidearm stays holstered for the time being as he tracks a rathalos across the sky with an arrow, ready to fire if it swoops down on anyone. It seems like it's just flying around for now, at least, but Drake's keeping careful watch.

Except then someone's joining him. ]

Oh, hey -- welcome, I guess, though most people aren't exactly happy to be here. I can answer whatever you want if you help me keep an eye on these guys. Come on up.

Nothing I'd rather do. I've become acquainted with them earlier today and I can't say it was a happy meeting.

[ There are approximately a thousand things he would rather do than be stuck in an arena with monsters, though really... when it comes down to it, these weren't all that bad by comparison.

Shiro makes his way over to Drake, positioning himself as to not hinder his freedom of movement. That bow might need to be fire after all. Though a bow is... pretty primitive. Hm.]

Do arrows actually do damage on them or is this for distraction purposes?

Distraction -- if one gets close enough then I'll spend some ammo, this is just me trying to make sure they don't target anybody on the ground. And reporting where they're at.

[ He tilts his head towards the battle rifle leaning against the watchtower seat behind him -- if he really needs firepower, he's got it. Then, without taking his eyes off the wyvernlike creatures: ]

Drake Holloway, by the way. You go by Takashi or Shirogane?

[ Shiro nods in appreciation of the tactical explanation. It's good to see that the people of this strange town have set up working defense strategies out of what looks like virtually nothing. ]

Just Shiro is fine, actually. Nice meeting you, circumstances aside.

[ Said with a look outside at the circling monsters. Shiro really hopes everyone's evacuated the colosseum by now. ]

This kind of thing happens regularly, it seems.

Shiro, okay. Cool.

[ Drake nods at the question, still tracking the monsters across the sky. ]

It's kind of a monthly thing, we're able to predict the days the Door will open. That's what's bringing people here... it just always brings monsters too. I've been here about a year and a half and sometimes they're more dangerous. When they fly it's always a little alarming honestly.

[personal profile] deadlining 2019-01-18 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. It makes sense for it to bring creatures other than those human-like sentience, at least.

[ Why would a strange magical inter-dimensional door know the difference between a beast that can't be reasoned with and just an especially non-humanoid alien? ]

Only one thing listed in that bestiary that came with the newbie guide is described as harmless though. If that is coincidence, then a very unfortunate one.

[ Drake nods at the assessment, then grimaces slightly. ]

I haven't checked out the bestiary for awhile but uh. I've been here well over a year and a half and I can't remember anything friendly coming through.

The one I'm thinking of was described as some kind of flower. It stuck out to me because the contrast between that and vicious fire-breathing dragons is so stark.

[ He huffs in a way that almost betrays amusement. When things only ever go from worst to even worse, sometimes you gotta find entertainment in the details. ]

i'm so sorry for the delay, i lost this!!

[personal profile] braveoff 2019-02-09 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[ The corner of Drake's mouth quirks up because he knows exactly what Shiro is talking about... funny little things that just mimicked whatever they last 'heard' at the next person to pass by. You had to watch your mouth around them, but Drake nods his agreement. ]

The echo flowers. I haven't seen any for ages, but they're the only harmless thing that's come through the Door that I can think of. Besides the creatures that seemed like a bunch mashed together and couldn't really move... those were kind of sad.

[ ...anyway. ]

Any other questions?
deadlining: (tfw when u ruin clear day)

and i was dead to the world this month, so DELAY PARTY HERE....

[personal profile] deadlining 2019-02-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ ... yeah, that does sound depressing, jeeze. Shiro shakes his head at the door's taste in... well, everything really. ]

I'm going to assume that all the important survival info is covered in the guide, so I'll skip it and move on to the next point: how can I make myself useful?

Situations like this usually mean being short on hands.

Do they ever. Well, that depends what you're good at, and what you're up for. There are a couple major organizations that keep the place as safe as we can and running as well as we can -- the Guard, the Clinic, the Speakeasy, and the Labs. Then there's smaller things run by just one or two people, like the sewing shop and bakery and coffee cart.

[ He glances at Shiro, waiting for the man's self assessment. What are you up for, new friend? ]

I'm a trained space pilot turned space war soldier slash diplomat.

[ This is so much easier to describe when he's in his own world and can just call himself a former Paladin of Voltron and have that mean something to people. ]

I can fly or drive pretty much anything, which is not going to be much help here. I'm also, uh, trained in hand-to-hand combat.

None of this strikes me as particularly appropriate for the given situation, so it might be time to pick up a few more skills.

[personal profile] braveoff 2019-02-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Drake considers that, not seeming to find it at all strange for some reason. Not that it's relevant to his life experience, but that of someone close to him. ]

Nothing to drive or fly, no, and we don't get many diplomatic opportunities... but combat is very often appropriate, at least monthly. Maybe not hand to hand specifically but then again it's hard to come by firearms here. Ammo's a little easier but still scarce. If you're willing to learn more weaponry you could be an asset to the Guard?

Or yeah, you could pick up new skills. The Clinic always needs help and this city drinks their way through Rey's stash pretty quick, she's been looking for help at the Speakeasy. Hell, do more than one thing, we have a lot of downtime here. I don't know how busy you like to keep.
deadlining: (attentive but like a puppy)

[personal profile] deadlining 2019-03-01 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I've forgotten what the alternative to busy is, if that tells you anything.

[ Downtime? Sounds fake and Shiro wants absolutely no part in it. ]

And this place is probably not the ideal one to pick up a leisurely pace. So I'll be looking into the Guard and Clinic for sure.

It tells me we have a lot in common already. I didn't mind the vacation at first but then I started getting pretty antsy.

[ The mention of which options Shiro wants to pursue gets an approving nod, and some elaboration. ]

The leader of the Guard is Nick, you can sign on anytime and then I'm in charge of assessment and training, as it is. We lost Henry awhile back, he was way better with the kind of weapons here than I am but I can refer you to the people I'm training with now. If you've got your own gun, ammo's a monster corpse for a clip at Rage's temple.

For the Clinic you need to talk to Pell, he's always looking for help even just on-call for emergencies. Whatever medical training you have is a good start, and he'll teach you more.
