[Nate is grinning, because he can tell that Peter is into it.]

He's got a Grumman Goose, it's not like an open cockpit pontoon. Been flying it since he got discharged from the Navy for, uh- [He shrugs a little.] -smuggling antiquities. Looks kind of like Tom Selleck, if Tom Selleck was cooler and smoked cigars.

"Smuggling antiquities", sure. You have painted the best mental image of this dude for me, though, and he kind of sounds amazing.

He is. Saved my ass more than once. Was pretty much my work partner until I retired from- [finger quotes] -"the business."

How'd you end up runnin' with a guy like that, anyway?

I was around your age, when I met him.

[Nate sucks in a breath through grit teeth, tongue in cheek. It's one thing to extol the "virtues" of one of his best friends, but it's another thing to share the circumstances behind their friendship. Sully is basically family.

But Peter knows enough now that it probably won't shock him.]

Me and my brother were, uh, living in Colombia at the time, I think Sam was actually serving a couple days in the local jail while I was trying to burgle a museum.

[Okay, so...not a great start.]

Turns out Sully was hired by these nutjobs to lift the same thing I was trying to. Ran into each other when I stole his wallet and when I went back to the museum that night, he was there with his employers. They were not happy I'd taken what they wanted. You'd think secret service-looking guys wouldn't be so spry, but they chased me across half the city's rooftops and I was this close to getting killed when he stepped in.

[Nate lifts his shoulders in a vague shrug.]

He taught me a lot after that, which was good, 'cause my technique was still pretty sloppy then.

[Peter isn't so shocked by how Nate met the guy, even grins when he mentions the museum burgling. Not that he approves, but fuck it, these stories are the best.

But then Nate gets to the part where these guys literally tried to murder a kid and then it's less cool and more "ooh nooooo"]

Okay, he sounds really cool, but your life is insane. I mean, I have no room to talk? But your life is insane.

[Peter is a teenage superhero and probably gets threatened by homicidal adults every week back home, but Nate assumes the height of that threshold is probably oriented around weird science or magic powers and not frequent run-ins with Johnny Law in the traditional sense.]

That might be the most accurate thing anyone's ever said about my life.
