Oh shit, what even happened last night? You're pretty sure you had a normal night, no crazy drunk antics (unless that is your normal night). But this morning you woke up with a brand new tattoo, and it's... a name?

Maybe it's a name you recognize, one of your good friends. Maybe it's a stranger. Maybe it's someone you can barely stand. No matter who it is, you kind of feel like you should look for them and figure out what's going on with this weird tattoo. And when you find them - well, they've got one too, except this one is your name. It would seem weird, except as soon as you see each other you kind of understand. Of course you'd have a tattoo with the name of the person you've found such an amazing connection with. You were meant to be together.

So enjoy your time with your newfound soulmate. Who knows, you might wake up tomorrow with a whole new name on your arm, a new connection, a new love. Make the most of it!

[He can do whatever the hell he wants, for better or worse.]

I get what you mean, though. You can do whatever crazy shit you want, but within reason.

[She tugs at his arm.]

You can't just say that and not explain.

[He blows out a breath.]

I'm one of the people who makes the rules, so if I say I can do something, then I can. But it's not like I do, I mean not all the time. I don't just go around shooting people for no reason.

[There's a lot to unpack there.]

[She squints at him.]

What, like... A politician or royalty or what?

Uh, kinda both? Not sure what to call it. My family's one of seven that run the city. Used to be crime syndicates, now we're... I don't know. In charge.

[He shrugs.]

Oh. Like the mob?

[Well that's... Sketchy as hell. But it's Charles, and they're obviously best friends, so it's fine.]</small?

Well, yeah. Exactly like that.

[Whoops.]

And you're in charge of the whole thing? How does that work?

No, I'm not in charge of like, everything. Just our part of it. Which is because my old man died, and I was the best candidate to take over. I don't do it alone, though, I've got a sister and a brother who help out.

Huh.

[Her mouth twists as she takes that in.]

So what parts are you in charge of, then?

The murder part.

[He says it with a straight face, but he can't keep it for long.]

I'm fucking with you, our family's in charge of shipping, in and out of the city. We control the river and the roads. Medical supplies, machinery, stuff we can't make ourselves.

Ugh.

[For a second, Kyna absolutely believed him.]

That doesn't sound too bad. Kind of tame, actually.

I mean... I'll be honest, shit gets dirty from time to time. We've got people trying to edge in on our territory, trying to steal our shit. And the other families aren't always playing nice. But mostly, yeah, it's not like it used to be.

Hmm.

[Kyna isn't really sure how she feels about that, but then, Charles can't possibly be that bad. She trusts him. Whatever he had to do, she figures he was backed into a corner.]

Okay. So, what are your brother and sister like?

[Well, if the worst he's getting is a "hmm", that's not so bad. Something about the thought of upsetting Kyna is really concerning to him. They're like, best friends, right?]

Well, they're both adopted, so we don't look anything alike, but we work pretty well together. Maria, I like to say she's the smart one. She stops me from doing anything dumb. Alex, he's quiet, only talks when he needs to. Got kind of a violent streak, but, uh, we try to handle that before it becomes an issue.

[What can he say? They weren't exactly destined to turn out normal.]

I, uh. [He doesn't super want to talk about this, but the conversation reminded him of it, and he's sure Kyna won't blab about it to everyone.]

I had- I have another sister. A twin. She's, um, not in the picture right now though. What about you? You got any siblings?

["Not in the picture" is a weird way to put it. If something bad had happened to her, something tells Kyna Charles wouldn't say it that way. Then again, pushing seems shitty, so she just lets him turn the tables.]

Yeah, I have an older brother. He tries to keep me out of trouble, too, but I kind of drive him nuts sometimes. He's got his shit way more together than I do. He was here for a little bit back when all of you guys got dragged here randomly, but then he went back home.

[Which is a good thing, she reminds herself. Still, it's clear by the way she says it that a part of her wishes he were here.]

[Yeah, it's a weird way to put it, but it's a weird situation.]

You miss him, right? But then it feels like missing him is mean, because it's like wishing he was stuck here, too.

[He hesitates, but with how specific that was, she can probably already guess the next part.]

I get that, trust me.

[She nods, giving his arm a reflexive squeeze.]

Yeah. He'd sure know how to handle this shit way better than I do.

[He hesitates again, but he's sure he can share this stuff with Kyna. He trusts her.]

I, uh, I haven't seen my twin sister in a long time. It's like losing an arm, you know? You don't realize how much of you they are until you lose them.

[She nods. She gets it, although she imagines it must be even more intense with a twin.]

Um... Why haven't you seen her?

We... had an argument.

[That's putting it lightly.]

When our old man died, she wanted to leave the city, leave all that mob shit behind. But those people, they're family too, you know? I couldn't just leave them to the wolves.

[He stares at the ground for a minute.]

So she left.

Oh.

[That's... a hell of an argument.]

And you never... You haven't spoken to her since?

Nope.

[He shrugs.]

Don't know how. She never told me where she was going.

God, that sucks. I'm sorry. You don't have like... any way of finding her?

[He huffs out a breath.]

No. She's always been good at disappearing, even when we were kids. I couldn't find her if I tried but to be honest, I'm not sure she wants to be found. And god, this is depressing shit, you sure you want to hear about this?
