Event Log: Dreamwalker

Who: Everyone!
What: The Dreamwalker event
Where: In your comfy bed and your sleepy head.
When: May 16th-26th
Warnings: Good dreams, weird dreams, bad dreams, straight-up nightmares. Please remember to tag for warnings in the header if things are going to be bad!

Have you been having trouble getting a good night's sleep? Tossing and turning, unable to rest those tired eyes? Or maybe you don't sleep at all, and never have. Not to worry! For a little while, you'll have no trouble at all falling asleep - in fact, as night falls, you'll find yourself overwhelmed with exhaustion whether you want to sleep or not. Lay down and rest your weary head, friends. Everyone could use a little extra sleep.

But what will your dreams bring? Something happy, images of a perfect day? Something hopeful, something you've wanted for a long time? Maybe you'll dream of anger, of the face of your worst enemy. Or maybe - just maybe - you'll have a horrific nightmare, and wake screaming, covered in cold sweat.

Not before others have time to see it, though. As you sleep, as you dream, the other residents of Hadriel, friends and enemies and people you've only met once, might find their way into your dreams. Or you might find your way into theirs - and then have to deal with someone's else's nightmares, or hopes, or anger. For the next ten nights, you'll find yourself either a host or a visitor, and no matter how you try you won't be able to stay awake once night falls.

Sweet dreams, Hadriel. Don't let the asshole fear gods bite.

► This log covers May 16th-26th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► You can't die in the dreams, but if you somehow manage to trip and fall and kill yourself getting out of bed, please report it on the death post.

[This is fucking crazy, but she doesn't fight him. She's too afraid, too shaky from the fight with Matt, from watching the wendigo tear into him, from the fall. Emily keeps a hand on Chris's back, to steady herself, and does exactly as he says.

Or, as well as she can when she is shivering, cold, terrified.

The wendigo, unmistakably the one that used to be Hannah, lands in front of them and screeches, sightless eyes looking them over, slowly circling them, screeching so loud that Emily isn't sure how she doesn't flinch.

It stares at her as if it sees her. Emily's fingers twitch just the slightest bit against Chris's coat, as if to grip it, to cling to him.

That's not what alerts the monster that these two still figures are meat, though. It's the fist Emily makes with her free hand, when she'd left loose by her side.

The wendigo leaps for it, claws extended. Emily jerks her arm back, bumping into Chris as she moves out of its way, but its claws slash through her jeans, slicing half an inch into her thigh.

The wendigo perches on the wall, screaming at them.

Emily is still holding onto Chris, even as they're both on the frigid ground now. Can it see the tears falling down Emily's cheeks? If it can, they're both dead.

Maybe not, though. It seems to be watching Chris now, alert and tensed to leap at him.]

[Chris is perfectly still, every muscle tense, watching the wendigo move; he doesn't have a weapon, doesn't know where to go, doesn't know what to do other than to protect Emily. That's the only thing he can focus on, because if he thinks about anything else he won't be able to keep from shaking or trying to run or anything else that will doubtlessly be instantly fatal for them both.

But then the creature is attacking them anyway, leaping for Emily, and he jolts away just as she bumps into him; they both end up on the ground and he's sure for a moment that the next thing he's going to feel is claws ripping into him, but it never happens. Not yet, at least, and he opens his eyes--he didn't realize he'd closed them--but is otherwise still, soon catching sight of the wendigo clinging to the wall.

It's watching him. He can tell it is, and he isn't sure even that holding still will be enough, but he doesn't have any other choice but to try. Stay still, and if the wendigo goes for him or Emily then try to catch--or keep--its attention long enough for Emily to get away. That's all he can do, and it's terrifying to think about and he's sure he's going to die, but fear is less important than protecting Emily. He'd promised her he'd never again make the mistake of letting fear stop him from having her back.

...When did he promise that?

The feeling of something being wrong is back, but it's far less pressing than the immediate threat of the wendigo. He stares at it, eyes wide, too focused on trying to stay still to end up crying as well, but his shaky breathing sounds loud enough in his ears that he's so afraid the wendigo can hear it too.]

[She's not going to let it kill him. It's her fault all these terrible things have happened. She's not going to get even more blood on her hands.

As the wendigo tenses, ready to jump, Emily moves to cover Chris. Its screech fills her ears, and she waits for its claws to tear into her back, but instead, the world goes silent.

Well, silent save for the wind buffeting the wooden walls, and the creaking of the metal legs as they buckle under the weight they're made to bear all on their own now that the support cables have been cut. For a moment, everything is still, and Emily pulls back to look around at the fire tower. On the table to their side, the radio crackles, and a grainy voice instructs whoever's listening to remain calm and stay put until dawn.

Then the tower starts to tip over.]

Chris-- Chris!

[Emily scrambles to her feet and heads for the door, but it's practically sealed shut. She pounds on it as the tower keeps tilting, falling, to throw them back into the mines.]

[He sees the wendigo tense, knows this is going to be it, then Emily moves suddenly--this is wrong, it's going to kill her, he's supposed to be protecting her not the other way around--but then...

It takes him longer than Emily to recognize what's going on, because he hadn't been in the fire tower; it's entirely unfamiliar, except from Emily's story. But he can hear the sound of wood beginning to give out, the feeling of the tower starting to shift, and he pushes himself up to his knees as Emily tries to get to the door.]

E-Em that's not--

[The door isn't going to open; he's not sure how he knows that, but he does. They're going to go down with the tower and all they can do is try, somehow, not to die; oh god, how did Emily and Matt survive this before--

And finally a piece clicks into place for him, and he realizes this has all happened before. He's not supposed to be here, yet somehow he is, and something is going on...

But he still can't figure out what, at least not in the time they have, and he needs to move; Chris is not the most graceful person, and even if he were the situation would make it impossible to manage anything but awkward fighting against gravity in order to get anywhere. But he does manage that, at least, just long enough to grab Emily's arm and tug her toward the side of the tower that's quickly shifting downward.]

Em, come on, w-w've got to get down!

[Staying on the side that's falling is their best bet logically; there's a span of wall between the windows and the door and he pulls Emily toward it, wishing there were something to actually hold onto.]

Down? We are going down!

[In several senses. She might be proud of how witty that response is if there were time to be proud, but right now, all she can do is follow Chris, let him lead her to safety (somehow, she knows she can trust him to do that, to protect her, like Matt had protected her -- oh god, Matt) and hold onto his arm as the tower tips over and falls into the mines.

The impact jostles them violently, knocks them both out of the relative safety of the wall and over onto the windows, which hold just long enough for them to see the mines and the crevasse beyond.

Gravity always wins. It pulls the radio off the desk, and it hangs over them for a few moments, taunting them, announcing how it's going to hit them in the forehead and they're powerless to stop it. But how can one thing hit them both? Are they one person now? Why does it seem like it's just him there, screaming in Emily's voice as the radio falls and hits him, sending him crashing through the glass and grasping at air for something to hold onto until his hands grip the railing.]

Matt! Oh, god, Matt, help me, please!!

[Matt (wait, wasn't he dead?) carefully climbs over the debris inside the tower, steps over the edge, looks at Chris -- at Emily -- and--]

"I saw you with Mike!"

[The view through the window is almost indescribable, terrifying and ominous and somehow also awe inspiring, and then the window shatters and he--or Emily?--reacts on reflex, grabbing onto the railing somehow despite being struck in the head by the radio. And oh god, it's Matt; he hasn't seen Matt in months, and he'd be so glad to see him if it weren't for the current situation being a little more pressing.

Chris--Emily? Both of them?--ask Matt for help, because of course Matt will help, but then he just...]

W-What the--Who cares about Mike right now!?

[Nothing against Mike, and Chris really hopes he's okay wherever he is, but this is really not the time for whatever Matt is going on about.]

idek but if it needs changing lmk!

[There's an icy wind blowing snow and bits of ice on Chris's face (Emily's face?), and ash from the fire that has caught on the splintered tower. Holding on gets harder with every passing second, and their only hope of rescue doesn't move from where he is.

Matt looks furious, the firelight reflecting off his eyes making him seem almost monstrous, more frightening than the wendigo if it weren't so clear (somehow, somehow) that he's hurt. That she hurt him.]

"Just tell me the truth!"

I-- I was confused--!

"So you fucked him!"

[No! Emily wants to scream. Why would I fuck the jerk who dumped me so he could stick it inside my backstabbing whore of a so-called best friend? But it's her fault (your fault) that he even thinks that's possible, her fault (your fault) because you treat him like shit and keep pushing him away even though he loves you, he loves you even though you don't deserve it. You keep fucking things up and pushing him to see how much he'll take without fighting back (Mike would've fought with you because you're both the same, you both use people, you both used each other for a while until it stopped working, until he got bored of you and your little game, until he decided it wasn't worth making you feel like he genuinely cared about you). You insult him, you're cruel, you fuck him just enough to keep him interested even though sometimes it's the last thing you want to do, you drag him out shopping with you, make him carry your bags, do everything but tell him he's worth it because you can't, you can't fall in love or he'll just tear out your heart and stomp on it.]

Matt-- [you say this in her voice, with her tears] --I'm sorry!

[And when you get out of this, you're going to tell him you love him.

He shakes his head, an ugly laugh echoing in your head. You've never heard him laugh this way, you hate it, you hate it.]

"Where's Mike now, Em? He'll save you."

[You stare, voice caught in your throat, as Matt jumps to safety.

The tower collapses.

You fall, Emily hitting the ground right next to you only a moment later, sobbing even though she should be breathless, maybe even dead.]

I'm sorry, I'm so sorry! Matt, I'm so, so sorry...!

[The remnants of the tower groan overhead, and somewhere in this hellhole, the wendigo screeches.]

nooo it's great c:

[personal profile] thechoiceisyours 2016-05-21 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Something about this feels familiar somehow, but everything else is so out of the usual that he almost can't process it; he's never seen Matt look so angry or act like this, but at the same time the thoughts--Emily's?--running through his head make the pieces fit together.

But it's still shocking, Matt's last comment, and even more than he jumps and just leaves him--her, them--to fall. And then suddenly he and Emily are both there on the ground, and he's trying to catch his breath from a combination of fear and hitting the platform; even in a dream he's less graceful at falling than Emily is.

He can hear her crying, and he can't blame her after all of that; Chris is not a fighter unless he absolutely has to be, but he has the incredible urge to kick Matt's ass--as if that's something he could actually manage--next time he sees him. Still, the sound of the tower overhead and the scream of the wendigo cause him to refocus his attention on the present, and he needs to get up and they have to get out of here.

Chris rolls over onto his side, pushing himself up and taking a quick glance at the tower and then back to Emily.]

Em, god, come on; f-forget what he said, we've got to find him and get out.

[Because as pissed as he is at Matt, they can't leave him here with the wendigo. And they need to get away from the crumbling tower, and is the platform they're standing on beginning to shift too?]
unfollowing: (fear face)

[personal profile] unfollowing 2016-05-21 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[The platform buckles beneath them, and Emily would stay here if not for Chris saying that they have to find Matt. After everything, after all she's done, she absolutely needs to save Matt or die trying, bcause he deserves to live way more than she does.

She forces herself up off the ground as the wendigo screeches again. She steps forward, and that slight shift is enough to make the platform buckle again.]

Go, Chris! Go save Matt, I-- I'll be fine!

[It's a lie, such an obvious lie.

A piece breaks off the tower and knocks half the platform out on its way down. The half Emily is on. She somehow manages to grab onto the edge, but for all that she's terrified, she doesn't ask Chris for help.]

[How is this all happening?

There's just too much too fast, nonstop fighting to stay alive from threat after threat; it's different from the constant apprehension and terror that had mostly characterized his experience at the Lodge, but both types of stress are equally terrible in different ways.

No matter how quick of a thinker he is though there's only so much time for logic in this situation, their platform crumbling and a wendigo screaming from the darkness of the mine, Emily telling him to go and his instincts torn between trying to more stable ground and not moving in a way that might make them fall. But nothing in him is willing to leave Emily, and momentary indecision is enough to keep him in place; then part of the tower falls and for a sickening moment he thinks Emily must be dead but then he sees her grab the edge.

What to do next is suddenly completely clear and he's at the edge in an instant, grabbing Emily by the arms and trying to pull her up; he's easily the least strong of the guys in their group but still more than strong enough to pull Emily back onto the platform with him, if he has the chance to do so without the platform collapsing further or the tower coming down on them again or the wendigo that he knows is there being drawn by the sound and movement.]

I-I've got you, Em, come on--

[No, god, no, someone else is going to die because of her. Emily doesn't move to help Chris pull her up, just hangs there limp and half dead already.]

Please, Chris, just go find Matt!

[The platform gives a little beneath them, and she slips in his grip. He has her by the wrists now, and she's still slipipng, slipping--]

Please--

[She falls, no matter how firm Chris thinks his grip is, and her scream echoes in the air and rings in his head until he wakes -- and she wakes, gasping, choking on a sob.]

Matt [she breathes, turning on her side, and curls up into a ball to cry in silence.]

E-Em no, you've got to--

[She's giving up, it seems like, and for some reason he can't hold her no matter how hard he's trying to; she has to help climb back up if he's going to be able to pull her back onto the platform at all, let alone in time before...

And then she's falling and screaming and oh god, oh god, this can't be possible, she's gone, and--

Then he wakes up, shaken and taking a few seconds to realize what happened--it was just a dream, Emily's surely fine and upstairs in her room--before getting out of bed to go get coffee. It's becoming a nightly tradition, almost, but it'll be nice when it's no longer a necessary one.]
