Have you been having trouble getting a good night's sleep? Tossing and turning, unable to rest those tired eyes? Or maybe you don't sleep at all, and never have. Not to worry! For a little while, you'll have no trouble at all falling asleep - in fact, as night falls, you'll find yourself overwhelmed with exhaustion whether you want to sleep or not. Lay down and rest your weary head, friends. Everyone could use a little extra sleep.
But what will your dreams bring? Something happy, images of a perfect day? Something hopeful, something you've wanted for a long time? Maybe you'll dream of anger, of the face of your worst enemy. Or maybe - just maybe - you'll have a horrific nightmare, and wake screaming, covered in cold sweat.
Not before others have time to see it, though. As you sleep, as you dream, the other residents of Hadriel, friends and enemies and people you've only met once, might find their way into your dreams. Or you might find your way into theirs - and then have to deal with someone's else's nightmares, or hopes, or anger. For the next ten nights, you'll find yourself either a host or a visitor, and no matter how you try you won't be able to stay awake once night falls.
Sweet dreams, Hadriel. Don't let the asshole fear gods bite.► This log covers May 16th-26th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► You can't die in the dreams, but if you somehow manage to trip and fall and kill yourself getting out of bed, please report it on the death post.

He lets it go without complaint, though he's forced to wonder just a little about the creature's creation. Adam brought it out in his own dream to protect them both, but Ronan is the one who took it from the dream and made it real- so which one really gave it life? Does it matter? It clearly belongs to Adam: it seems drawn to him, it's reminiscent of him, it even acts a little like him, and Ronan is happy to let Adam own it.
It doesn't stop him from feeling responsible for it, all the same. Even if Ronan only exists as the battery, even if Adam is the input, Ronan still brought it to life into this place. How could he not feel close to it?]
Who the fuck says we can't name him Deathfang?
[Ronan asks bluntly, reaching down to tug at its leg, annoying it and earning him a huffy little kick to the hand while his head is ducked a bit, confirming Adam's earlier suspicion in a typical Ronan Lynch fashion.]
Yeah, it's a boy. [A pause, and then-] Throttle's a good boy name.
no subject
[Then again, Ronan did name his girl bird Chainsaw. Adam doesn't think he is the best person to turn to for naming suggestions.
As the dog gets more comfortable, he starts to look around himself a little. Cautious, but curious. Ronan's room is full of interesting things, so Adam can't blame the creature, and he's inclined to let it roam a bit. It can't be easy, suddenly being brought to life like that. Adam isn't even sure how he feels, yet, except that he already cares about the dog.
It's strange, given his own normal caution, but maybe it's not that strange. He created this dog, in the beginning, and Ronan brought it to life. Does that mean it's theirs, somehow a product of both of them? He's not sure what to think about that. He just knows that he feels responsible for it, watching it poke around the room, not going too far from either of them.]
We're not naming him after a car part. He came from the forest, so maybe something like... Birch. Or Cedar.
no subject
But, moving onto more important things, Ronan watches as the dog moves around, carefully trying to note any of the sharp or dangerous things that he has cluttering up his room so that the dog won't hurt itself. There's not too much that he has that would be immediately dangerous to an animal like that, and so after a moment of tracking it around his room, he shifts his attention back to the conversation at hand.]
Jesus, everything comes from a forest. If you wanna be like that, just name it Tree and move on with your life.
[As if Ronan is the perfect person to lecture Adam on a lack of creativity. Nevertheless, he holds his fingers down for the dog to walk to, clicking his tongue to get its attention. It has the adverse effect of getting Chainsaw's attention, and she starts to rattle in her cage, alarmed at the other creature in the room. She caws loudly- it's still the middle of the night- and Ronan frowns, moving to stand and walk toward the cage.]
Or Woodchipper. At least that's still kind of badass.
no subject
[Objectively Adam knows that is not really true, but there's no way he's gonna just let Ronan disparage his name choices. Besides, the dog doesn't look all that badass anyway. Though he did try to protect them in the dream - Adam remembers that, and his heart goes out to the poor creature.
For all that it might be difficult taking care of a dog here, Adam can only be relieved that it wasn't left in his dream to die or disappear or whatever might have happened. He has Ronan to thank for that.]
We can't name him after a power tool, either. What would Chainsaw think?
[He hopes they don't try to fight. Do birds and dogs fight? He doesn't think so, but he coaxes the dog over as Ronan makes his way to the cage. Probably Chainsaw won't like Ronan having brought something else to life, and Adam intends to try to keep the peace. Somehow.]
no subject
Fine. Splinter, then. Still wood, still badass, not a power tool.
[Part of him can't quite believe that they're having this conversation. Part of him is still guilty, confused, concerned about the dog, and the rest of him is a little charmed by Adam's immediate taking to the dog.
Chainsaw doesn't seem to want to go near the dog, which is understandable for a multitude of reasons. Ronan already trusts it- it came from Adam's mind after all, it tried to protect them both- but she wasn't there and she wouldn't know about it. That's alright. There'll be plenty of opportunities for her to pick on it in the future.
Ronan stays on the other side of the room for now, so as not to force Chainsaw closer when she's not comfortable with it.]
What do you think?
no subject
The dog, on the other hand, seems cautiously interested in Chainsaw, just like he's cautiously interested in everything else. And is that really a surprise, when this is his very first day alive? First hour, even? But he stays pretty close to Adam, probably because Adam is petting him gently now, scratching behind his ears.
Oddly, Adam probably finds it about as comforting as the dog does. At least they didn't bring this creature out into more pain. Adam can make sure it's safe, at least. He thinks.]
Everyone will just think we're big Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans.
[And he does not think that is the case. At least, Adam always preferred Transformers.
He considers the dog for a moment, then looks at Ronan.]
How about Aspen? They're pretty badass, I mean, for trees. An aspen forest is really just one tree, split off into a colony with the root system intertwined. Sort of creepy.
no subject
But, if anyone was to have encyclopedic knowledge of forest terminology, Ronan supposes that it would be Adam among their friend group- and he can appreciate how Adam at least tries to make his not-at-all badass name suggestion try to sound badass. In the end, Adam did dream up the dog, and he can at least relent a little on the naming.
They'll probably be here all night if he doesn't.]
Aspen.
[Ronan sighs like it's an inconvenience, but slowly makes his way back toward the bed, feeling carefully for Chainsaw's reaction. She stays on his shoulder throughout, even if her claws tighten a little punishingly on his shoulder when he reaches out to pet the dog- to pet Aspen.]
I guess that's fine.
no subject
Adam can't help but smile at the sight, just a little. Of course the dog would adore Ronan as much as his other creations have. That's how it should be. Adam doesn't know if the dog will want to protect them, the way he dreamt it to, but he's not sure he wants that either. If anything, he feels like they ought to protect it. Hadriel is a dangerous place, and Aspen didn't ask to be pulled out here.]
Aspen it is, then. I'll go out tomorrow and see if I can find some food.
[It's still the early hours of the morning, after all, though Adam strongly doubts he'll be able to fall asleep again after that. But then, he didn't think he'd be able to fall asleep in the first place.
He watches Ronan with the dog, relaxing a little now, now that he's sure Ronan is okay and the dog seems all right, too.
He wonders if he should apologize for putting Ronan in that position, for making him take another living creature out of dreams. He doesn't think Ronan wanted to, not really.]
Hey. Is this okay?
no subject
Instead, his vision settles again on the dog in front of him, happy to be petted, curious but gentle all the same as he realizes that Adam is asking him if this is okay- the dog in front of them both, a little hurt but no worse for the wear, currently licking Ronan's fingers in thanks for the few brief pets that he'd given it earlier.
And- well, he's not sure how to answer at first. Ronan knows that they did the right thing- the only thing they could have done and he'd have felt far worse to leave the animal to its death. He can't say that he's in love with the idea of bringing a dream creature to life in this dangerous place, though he probably wouldn't have minded so much if they were home. He just feels a responsibility to it now, wants it to be alright, wants to protect it.
They'll both do their part. Adam will look for food in the morning and Ronan will- well. He'll help somehow. They'll have to tell the others too, but Ronan isn't exactly looking forward to those conversations so he pushes them from his mind and offers Adam a short nod in response.]
It's safer out here than it is in our heads.
[Is what he finally says, contemplative as he scratches over Aspen's ears.]
We'll take care of him.
no subject
He looks at Chainsaw's ruffled feathers and knows it'll take some adjustment, but they can manage. At least Aspen is alive. At least Ronan is unhurt. Adam's nightmares didn't destroy either of them, and he doesn't want to think about how relieved that makes him feel.]
We will.
[He hesitates for a moment.]
Can I stay here until morning?
[Aspen too, obviously. Adam doesn't intend to sleep again, but he doesn't quite want to be alone even so. Maybe they can just sit together, or lay down, or talk.]
no subject
His fear has slowly been assuaged over time, when the worst thing he's brought back with Adam next to him has been a twisted butterknife. There have been annoying things, of course- Adam probably hadn't appreciated waking up with smushed fruit under his shoulders or awkwardly lumpy ceramic mugs shoved between them, but on the whole, they're adjusting, and Ronan hasn't pulled anything that could hurt either of them in awhile.
None of that matters much this time anyway, as Ronan is certain that they're both probably going to be awake for the rest of the night.]
Of course.
[He'd rather not have to put Chainsaw back in her cage if Aspen is going to roam around freely in his room, and Ronan figures that if they're both awake then they can keep an eye on the two of them, and so he moves to deposit his bird gingerly on the top of her cage, where she can still hop around his room if she wants.
There's too much crap around his room to really be able to clean for hosting a dog, but Ronan doesn't think that Aspen will want to explore too much anyway, not if the two of them are going to curl up in the bed, so he leaves most of the mess where it is and instead climbs back over his blankets, putting himself between Adam and the wall and flopping back down with a sigh.]
I probably won't sleep.
no subject
[He probably didn't need to say that. It's obvious, after all - what they see when they sleep makes sleep not worth it. It's impossible to avoid that initial wave of weariness, probably caused by the gods, but now that they're up they don't have to fall asleep again. And Adam doesn't want to. For all that he can usually sleep anywhere, and for all that he's still conditioned to steal moments of sleep whenever he can, he doesn't want to risk it again.
He climbs in bed with Ronan, patting his hand against the side of it so Aspen will come. The dog doesn't look too interested in wandering around right now, instead content to curl up on the floor next to Ronan's bed and watch over the two of them.]
We'll just lay down for awhile.
[It's a comfort, having Ronan next to him. They don't spend every night together, but it's started to become regular, Adam's started to get used to having a warm body next to his. Sometimes Ronan doesn't sleep, sometimes he sleeps and brings back strange things, so it's been an adjustment - but it's nothing Adam's not willing to do.
He makes himself comfortable, tugging the blanket up so they won't be cold, body turned toward Ronan.]
no subject
He doesn't plan on talking much, or really being great company at all, but the two of them spend enough time in one another's company that he doesn't think it'd be a big problem. They're not going to sleep again, but they can just- exist here, for awhile. Ronan has steadily gotten better at just being when he's too afraid to sleep, and he does so now, making sure that Adam is alright and settled before he half-shuts his eyes and heaves a soft sigh, letting his mind wander.
It's been a long night.]
