Where: In your comfy bed and your sleepy head.
When: May 16th-26th
Warnings: Good dreams, weird dreams, bad dreams, straight-up nightmares. Please remember to tag for warnings in the header if things are going to be bad!

Have you been having trouble getting a good night's sleep? Tossing and turning, unable to rest those tired eyes? Or maybe you don't sleep at all, and never have. Not to worry! For a little while, you'll have no trouble at all falling asleep - in fact, as night falls, you'll find yourself overwhelmed with exhaustion whether you want to sleep or not. Lay down and rest your weary head, friends. Everyone could use a little extra sleep.

But what will your dreams bring? Something happy, images of a perfect day? Something hopeful, something you've wanted for a long time? Maybe you'll dream of anger, of the face of your worst enemy. Or maybe - just maybe - you'll have a horrific nightmare, and wake screaming, covered in cold sweat.

Not before others have time to see it, though. As you sleep, as you dream, the other residents of Hadriel, friends and enemies and people you've only met once, might find their way into your dreams. Or you might find your way into theirs - and then have to deal with someone's else's nightmares, or hopes, or anger. For the next ten nights, you'll find yourself either a host or a visitor, and no matter how you try you won't be able to stay awake once night falls.

Sweet dreams, Hadriel. Don't let the asshole fear gods bite.

Rey squints at Firo, trying to gauge some sort of age range between the two of them.

"Hmm... Probably about ten years or so? Give or take?"

Close enough.

Without even thinking to repress it, Firo sucks in a deep breath. "Ten?"

Ten? That's forever. That's like a whole other lifetime for him. Is he really going to last that long?

"What am I like? Am I tall--like taller than you?"

She's pretty tall. To be taller than her is a feat he'd like to accomplish.

She tries to suppress a rather unflattering snort.

"Mm, not quite. You're about... this height."

Rey brings her hand, palm down, a couple inches below her own head. Probably shorter than he'd hoped to be, but much taller than he is now.

A slight smile forms. "And you seem pretty happy with the way things are back home. You even have a family that you talk about a lot."

It still does look plenty tall to him, and after her next revelation, he doesn't care enough to contest it.

He rocks up on his toes. He feels the sudden urge to grab her, shake her, and make sure she's telling the truth. And then to make her tell him everything.

He holds back, just barely, though his whole body is leaning forward. "A family?" He nods his head, tries to play it cool. "Is it the Gandors?"

Pausing for a moment, Rey tries to remember if Firo has ever mentioned anything about these Gandors before. Eventually, she shakes her head in response to his question.

"You said that the Martillos are your family. Does the name ring any bells?"

Even if 'family' and 'Family' have different meanings for Firo...

"Martillos?" Firo blinks, now just confused. "No... that's one of the gangs near where I live, but I don't know any of 'em. The Gandors are my friends."

If any gang would take him as theirs, it'd be them.

At least the name means something to him.

"Well, it seems that things change somewhere down the line -- because that's the name you gave me."

And she doesn't think that Firo would've lied to her. He seemed pretty serious about the subject of his family.

"But... that's impossible." He steps closer, his frown very stern, as if he can intimidate her into giving him all the information. "What'd I say? Tell me exactly."

If she's just making this up, she'll hesitate. But if she just made this up, then she probably wouldn't know the Martillos, given that she doesn't seem like a local.

While Rey doesn't hesitate, she just need a second to remember.

"Hm. Well, you say you're pretty good with a knife, though haven't seen how you are yet. They have you running a casino, too."

Times like these, she is wondering if she should've bombarded Firo with Twenty Questions back then, because the kid clearly wants some sort of proof. Proof that she doesn't know how to give, as it if even matters.

If asked, Firo'd insist that he was looking for the holes in her story so that he could expose her as a fraud. Really, though, he was kind of hoping that she'd come up with some sort of unimpeachable proof that somehow, someday, he'd find his family and his place to belong.

So far, it's not a damning 'no,' but he finds himself oddly disappointed with now unconvinced he is. He shrugs. "That doesn't really mean anything. I could use a knife now, if I had one." How hard can it be? He knows it wouldn't be pretty, but he doubts she can call his bluff anyway.

Mouth twisting into a thin line, Rey folds her arms. She really isn't any good at this, and convincing people isn't her strongest suit. Dealing with people in general was more her brother's thing.

"Being able to swing around a knife doesn't make you any good at it." She huffs. "And, look at it this way: If I was lying, why would I tell you that your family are these Martillo people? Would've made more sense telling you that they're your friends than some other gang."

Though, now that she thinks about it, she's not certain if Firo ever specified that they were a gang. However, it made more sense in retrospect.

Huh.

To his credit, he actually considers Rey's question a second. A look of concern knits his eyebrows together before he simply shrugs his shoulders. "...I dunno.

"Why're you tellin' me any of this?"

The pause on Rey's end may not inspire much encouragement, as she's genuinely searching for an answer to Firo's question that's as much a mystery to her at first.

"Because, I care," she eventually says. "And I think you're a decent person."

Apparently, they were close before. It can't hurt to try and figure out why.

The confusing thing is that he can't think of any reason why she'd lie about any of it. Even if she's messing with him... well, most people would've given up by now. Found something more fun to do.

He shifts uncomfortably. He doesn't want to touch the issue of caring, so he puts it out of his mind.

"Decent? The older me?"

Now, that's almost funny, and his lips twitch like he might laugh. There's something smug about the expression too. All those people saying he'd only get worse and that he'd wind up in the chair... and the new him is going to be a decent person? He almost wishes it were true, if only to show them.

"Both," she simply answers.

The way that Firo is now, in this age, is definitely a different side of him that she's never seen. In spite of his feral streak, however, he doesn't seem like such a bad kid.

It isn't such a crazy idea to think that he eventually grows up to become the person that he does. Time changes people. It doesn't mean that they're bad.

Firo fixes her with a very serious stare, but it's taking a whole lot of self-control not to look at baffled as he feels. "...You're weird."

He doesn't mean it as an insult, though.

That's all the more he can say, because then the already indistinct world around them wavers and fades away.
