What starts as a normal day will begin to herald in the beginning of the end. On May 29th, you might see something in the sky out of the corner of your eye- blink and you miss it, but there's definitely something there, something that's not any kind of animal you've ever seen. Now that you know to look, you may be paying closer attention to the sky in order to catch the next one that flies past- a ship. A ship that that seems to be designed in a way that might remind you of the Null themselves.

As the days pass, it becomes unmistakable- the Null are here and are scouting out the area. It's time to prepare for an immediate attack and start putting all those contingency plans to good use. Will you gear up for a fight and fall into formation? Will you close and lock your doors and stay inside? Or perhaps there's some other plan that you want to enact?

You'll have time to discuss that on the network later, but now you need to start reacting to the Null's actions- which are apparently to start building smaller encampments around the city as they try to find the way inside. Confusion is holding them at bay for now but it might be time to start building some defensive measures and fortifications, because she won't be able to keep them at bay forever.

When they break in, they do so in a big way- with a massive explosion at Confusion's temple that rattles throughout the entire city. It's obvious that something has happened- and what exactly that something is reveals itself shortly when Null begin to flood the city, having broken through Confusion's protection.

This is when the fight escalates to an all-out war. Nobody is spared, and they're watching everyone from above. What will you do? How will you keep the ones you love safe? How can anyone survive this? All you can do is fight back, all we can do is wait. Good luck, Hadriel.

[she sighs and looks a bit dejected] I guess we really haven't made as much progress as I'd like to think. But. I've got to believe that there's always a chance to be better.

And people shouldn't be afraid to think differently than others. A lot of the time, that's how progress begins.

Yeah. I guess we all know that, but then when it comes down to it... People like comfort and routine.

Not that there aren't people out there trying, or being better. But they're pretty rare. Like you. You're kinda the only person like that I've really met.

They do . . . until something comes along that shocks them out of their complacency.

[her eyes widen] Okay, I'm going to have to hug you now. If that's all right with you.

This is like hug number four I'll have you know. We're going over my quota of one or less hugs per year.

[He braces for impact.]

I'm sorry. It's just that you're so good to me.

[and she hugs him, squeezing tightly before letting go]

There. That wasn't so bad, was it?

I don't think your exposure therapy is working. It's not getting better.

[He still reacts to hugs like a cat that's about to get a bath. ]

[she looks disappointed. really disappointed]

Really? [she sighs and looks off into the distance for a moment before returning her attention to him] Do you want me to stop? It's okay to say yes.

[Oh no. Not the puppy dog eyes. HIS WEAKNESS. ]

No. I won't get any better at being human again if I don't try. I got this.

[ Look! He's got this! He will hug YOU, he'll do it. Sure it's sorta awkward but he is trying.]

[it's not on purpose. it just sort of . . . happens]

All right, if you're really sure?

[she's genuinely touched by how hard he's trying and hugs him back gently]

Yeah. It'll be fine. I'm not going to die of hugs.

[he hopes.]

[warmly] You'd better not. You do, and I'll be camping out at Hope's temple, waiting for you to come back.

That's sweet, but I think I'd be so embarrassed to die of hugs I'd just die again when I came back.

Ugh! No! No dying at all. It's not allowed.

Okay you go tell the ones in charge of this place that dying isn't allowed. I'm sure it's just a switch they flip.

If only I could. They'd probably laugh at me. [a pause] No, I know they'd laugh at me.

Does Hope laugh? I've never seen him do that. Maybe it's not possible because I've never even seen him smile.

I don't think he does. I don't think any of them do smile. But I know they'd laugh at me because they're jerks. Every single one of them.

True. Love would do it in all caps which makes it even worse.

For being some sort of emotion vampires, they sure don't understand how emotions work. Like at all.

Exactly. My dignity would never recover. I'd have to ask you to mercy kill me to save me from the shame. [a pause] Of course, the jerks would just bring me back to life to laugh at me some more.

They really, really don't. And every time we try to point it out, they get all defensive.

Makes me wonder how they've survived this long. Though I know someone was saying they used to have a colony of things that weren't human. Maybe they emotion-ed differently than we do?

Humans are pretty bad at feelings and junk. Wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah, I think I heard that they could feel lots of very intense emotion on command, without all of the hoops they make us jump through.

That sentient sparkly glowclouds would be the same? Yeah, I guess I shouldn't be surprised, either.

They picked the wrong species if they want us to experience one singular emotion at a time. I'm not even sure that's possible.

I know, right? We can love someone and be really, really angry with them at the same time. I think I spent most of the first month I was with my boyfriend like that.

Make him sleep on the couch?

Silver lining is I now know how complex emotions are. And that I definitely need therapy after all this.

[she laughs] That wouldn't work, we weren't even sleeping together then! No, I was mad that he was a superhero-for-hire for this really sleazy businessman.

[a gentle smile] ...yeah. That would probably be helpful?
