Intro Log: Eight Legs No Heart

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for June.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: June 10th-15th
Warnings: Spiders. Soooo many spiders. New people. Probably swearing.

For once, the new arrivals to Hadriel will not be waking up on the cold hard ground of the colosseum. Oh, sure, you'll still awaken in the arena - but this time the Door has been kind enough to ensure that you wake up comfortably arranged in a very nice chair. Or maybe not so comfortably. Some of those look pretty awkward - hopefully you didn't wake up with a crick in your neck! And hey, feel free to try to drag some of these super cool chairs to your new homes. They're probably not cursed or anything.

As you make your way out of the arena, be careful getting to close to the walls - well, except that's the only way out, so good luck! Chilling up on there waiting to get the drop on you are Skulltulas. These funky-looking spiders have squishy underbellies, but their upper exoskeletons are hard and very difficult to break through. They really just want to nibble you a few times, and maybe suck out all of your blood. No big deal, right? Have fun!

Have you conquered your arachnophobia and managed to escape? Great! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[...yeah okay that's a fair point but still--

and then she asks that question. Newt's wrinkling his nose at that]

Uh--I mean most spiders aren't poisonous or venomous, so, I mean...yeah? [He's slowly pushing to his feet, starting to come closer. Honestly? He's not gonna judge at this point because he's been starving for the past year and a half and some, so....]

Do you know how to cook it?

[ Arya makes an incision all the way down the spider's belly, so that she can see everything inside. She pokes a few organs and nods, apparently satisfied. ]

It doesn't appear poisonous.

[ She finishes bundling it up and then swings dinner over her shoulder. ]

Roast it until it's done, obviously. I think it's supposed to be crispy?

Uh...Maybe? If it gets crispy, it's supposed to be crispy? That's what I usually go with.

[yep coming closer, then]

But, uh...you know that it used to be human, right? [because in Haven, all the monsters were former humans o o p s]

[ Arya shoots Newt another look. Now, she just feels sorry for him. He really doesn't know what he's talking about. She shakes her head. ]

No, the human flesh is only in the meats the gods provide. It's not in the monsters, which is why I eat these instead.

[...say what now??] Uh...gods? I haven't heard of any gods. [Newt is frowning] I only know about the Yao Corporation. The guys that control this place?

[ Arya shakes her head, a little frustrated. This man is an idiot. ]

No, I told you. The gods control this place. You're in Hadriel now, overseen by Hope, Fear, Rage and Delight.

Kid, this is literally the first time you have mentioned any gods to me at all. [ugh. But anyway, he's going to just...process that for a moment] Well that's....new. [he shakes his head] I mean, it totally reeks of something that Yao would pull but hey.

[ was it? Arya shrugs. She's filled a lot of people in on the gods, and all their confusion starts to blur together after a while.

Arya tugs on Newt's arm. ]

Come. I'll take you to their temple.

[ This man needs to be shown, not told. ]

[Newt blinks as the girl tugs on his arm but...eh, he's willing to go along with it?] Okay. How far is it? [he's not up for, like...a three day trek though.]

Not far. A few minutes' walk.

[ Arya turns and leads Newt out of the colosseum. She doesn't especially care if he follows or not, although she figures that anyone with some sense would want to know about this place. ]

[Oh. That's not so bad, then. He moves to follow] How long've you been here, anyway?

[ Arya does a little finger counting. ]

The Door has opened nine times, including my arrival. We think that may mean I've been here for nine months.

[Newt nods, at that] So...was it a new group of people every time? Or just more monsters?

New people, and new monsters. The monsters will arrive with you and then retreat into the caves. My group had bears. [ they made pretty good meat.

After a few minutes, they arrive in front of a large, almost beautiful door. Arya pushes it open. ]

This is Hope's temple.

[Newt blinks, tilting his head up to get an eye for the temple] Huh. Do they all have temples? [but he's moving to enter after her, looking around at the interior.]

They do.

[ Arya follows. She hasn't been in Hope's temple much, not since the last extinction event. It always makes Arya feel a little warmer inside, and while she doesn't trust that feeling one bit, it's still nice, sometimes. ]

Some gods have other things, too. Rage has an armory, and Delight has a bar.

So...things that would help possibly fuel more of their particular emotion. Are they like the embodiment of the emotion or something? Why do they need us?

[because if Newt knows anything about suspicious omnipotent beings with too much power, it's that they don't keep you around unless they need you for something.]

Fear wants the power for...something.

[ Arya pauses. Does he want power for power's sake? Arya has never bothered to ask, but the question nags at her now. ]

Hope wants the power so he can wake the other gods. Fear and Hope are fighting each other. We're just their pawns, I suppose.

So...we're basically living batteries for these guys. [Newt's mouth twists in a scowl, looking around the temple again] That's really not my idea of a good time.

[ Arya isn't sure what a battery is, but she gets Newt's point. She chuckles briefly, quietly, bitterly. ]

You're not here to have a good time.

[Newt can't help but choke on a laugh at that, and it's really not funny but he can't help it. Laugh or cry.]

Kid, considering we were greeted with spiders and a freaky bloody colosseum, I wasn't actually under the impression that this place was gonna be a good time.

[ Arya just stares at him. She doesn't get what's so funny, but she does get what isn't funny -- and she knows of people who laugh like that when things are hopeless. Arya has never been one of those people. She'd rather do something constructive, like putting swords through things. ]

At least you didn't have bears. The bears were bigger. Although I suppose they did provide meat, which was good, since when I arrived, we hadn't worked out how to get food yet.

[say the what now?] okay, yeah, bears sound pretty awful. [but also--] Wait---so you didn't have food before? What happened?

Some of us went hungry. I tried to fish the lake, and I ate bear meat and acorn paste. [ There's a nonchalance to Arya's tone that suggests she's done this before. ]

Are you done here? I don't like to stay in the temples long. The gods have too strong a presence here.

[Newt's mouth twists at that--he knows intimately what hunger is like--and he's glancing around the temple one last time, eyes narrowed, before turning to leave] Yeah. Let's get out of here. I can't say I'm a fan of it either.
