Intro Log: Eight Legs No Heart

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for June.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: June 10th-15th
Warnings: Spiders. Soooo many spiders. New people. Probably swearing.

For once, the new arrivals to Hadriel will not be waking up on the cold hard ground of the colosseum. Oh, sure, you'll still awaken in the arena - but this time the Door has been kind enough to ensure that you wake up comfortably arranged in a very nice chair. Or maybe not so comfortably. Some of those look pretty awkward - hopefully you didn't wake up with a crick in your neck! And hey, feel free to try to drag some of these super cool chairs to your new homes. They're probably not cursed or anything.

As you make your way out of the arena, be careful getting to close to the walls - well, except that's the only way out, so good luck! Chilling up on there waiting to get the drop on you are Skulltulas. These funky-looking spiders have squishy underbellies, but their upper exoskeletons are hard and very difficult to break through. They really just want to nibble you a few times, and maybe suck out all of your blood. No big deal, right? Have fun!

Have you conquered your arachnophobia and managed to escape? Great! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers June 10th-15th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[He smiles at the compliment Hermann gives him. It lights up his homely face, making him look if not normal, then at least something approaching it. He's pleased that at least he's ended up in a place where he's not about to be stoned to death for being what he was. Urulat had no been very kind to those that were different or deigned to follow their own path.]

It's no trick, doctor.

[Tricks were for charlatans and pretenders, those who could only hope for the power that Ushahin possessed. What he had was the real thing. How else would he have known Hermann's proper title?]

It's magic.

[ As little attention as Hermann pays appearances, stark differences can startle him to it. That smile does the trick. It does wonders for the man, so even for someone like Hermann, it's not a bad thing to have caused it.

His generous feeling staggers some to hear his title. Hermann only notices it after a second, startled, because he expects it, so it's not unusual, and would feed the generous swell, since it's always welcome when people actually use it -- except, right, he shouldn't know.

That could be a trick, too, someone a fortune teller would guess. His badge won't tell it anymore, not since Haven stole the text, but a reasonable inference. Could be, but Hermann's seen enough. To his mind, there's often little difference between magic and trick -- and much magic must be science without the human mind yet able to discern it. Without the right tools.

Being thus unable, it might not matter, really. ]

Right. [ He sighs. ] Of course it is. You shouldn't do that, you know, go prying. If that's how you got it -- my title, I mean.

[ He wouldn't be annoyed, except that if he had gotten the title through something prying, that he must mind. He doesn't just let anyone into his head. ]

I know. [He knows and doesn't care.] But I might as well cease to breathe. My powers are simply part of myself.

[If anyone had reason to lecture Ushahin on the morality of invading people's minds for his own personal pleasure, the lesson had been forgotten long ago. His dark master had only encouraged it, and being in Darkhaven, the people around him didn't care if he invaded their dreams or occasionally scryed their minds.

He touches something then quite unexpected in Hermann's mind. People don't usually think in words or numbers, more like images that flit here and there. It's a well-organized mind, but there is something...else in there, something that the mad one doesn't quite understand at first.]

Echoes. I see them. Numbers and echoes. [There were whispers in the doctor's mind of others, their minds touching his and leaving their imprint upon his. They were like stones dropped into a pond to create ripples. One of them was mortal and human. The other...Ushahin feared to look at it for too long. It was like staring at the carcass of some great beast, reminding him of the fathomless minds of dragons back home.]

Well, that's inconvenient, isn't it?

[ A bit snippy. There's no real vehemence to it. Despite Hermann's general aversion to socializing, one not entirely dismantled by the dependency bred in Haven, he considers himself as a person with tact. (Perhaps his perspective's off-kilter, given his best contrast is Newton, who has none.) However, when dealing with someone who prods -- intentionally or not -- right into his head, he thinks he has the right to a measure of attitude.

This conversation does seem to be eliciting a broad range of emotion. Largely confusion, and he's back to that from irritation, echoes?

He understands in another moment, and it closes him further, shuttering his face, narrowing his lips. ]

That's really none of your business.

[ Not Newton, not the kaiju, the precursor, the hunger, the teeth, the incomprehensible -- He doesn't just let anyone into his head. ]

Can't you -- can't you do something to distract yourself from it? Try counting to ten. Think of something besides my head.

Calm yourself, doctor. If I had meant you harm when I went in, I would have already done it by now.

[He holds up his hands, both the broken and the whole, in a peaceable gesture. Truly, his intentions hadn't been so much malicious as curious. Ushahin found minds to be a reality far more fascinating than the current one he resided in. It was how he related to the world around him, finding out what was going on inside a person's head.

Still, perhaps it is hasty to start things off on the wrong foot with people here. He retreats. Not fully, for Ushahin is not that kind. Men have never been kind to him, so he sees no reason to do the same. Just back to the surface he goes, back to the thoughts that flit through Hermann's head with a sharpness he can almost feel.]

Just answer me one question. What is that great beast that is inside your head? The dead one that is like looking into a dark abyss.

You must realize that isn't reassuring at all. You must also have heard by now that some would consider the invasion itself to be a kind of harm.

[ Appearances, etc., but he's not entirely immune to their effect, and that disfigured hand beside its ill-matched pair chips at his irritation. Though the man cannot help it, or so he claims, Hermann cannot easily rationalize it away, cannot forgive it.

He is a private person. Distance, walls, distance, the buffer of numbers, of titles.

At least, as wretched as they are to contemplate, as wretched as it is that they linger, the kaiju do not implicate the personal. It is not a thing he would share as readily as Newton (nothing is), should be considered a PPDC secret, really, as if that mattered here, but that sort of procedural obedience Hermann reflexively maintains, a subconscious comfort in it.

But it does not implicate the personal. So he scowls, but he answers. ]

It probably isn't right to call it one beast, but I'm not sure what you're seeing, exactly. The Hivemind, I expect, which comprised kaiju and Precursors both.

[ Where that word came from, he's not sure -- he's not sure that either he or Newton knows, given the language, the thoughts had not been a human language, they'd come away with meaning, understanding, grasping how to mend the plan, but it had not been human, cold and scouring and hungry, destructive -- Hermann shakes his head, resisting the thought of it. ]

What you and I consider to be harmful are very different things.

[He hadn't left him shattered, the very pain itself driving into Hermann's mind until he was left writhing in agony, wishing for something or someone to make an end of him. He'd made an end to many such men over the years, sometimes simply because he was testing out his powers on an unsuspecting populace. The half-man had tread lightly, which was more of a courtesy than he gave to just about anyone else. He failed to see what it was he had done wrong.]

Strange names for strange beasts. You carry so many echoes within. It is a wonder they have never begun to create echoes of their own. And when staring at an abyss, something will eventually look back.

[Where he had picked that up from was anyone's guess. He could feel the prickliness and irritation on the surface of the doctor's mind. It is sharp and cold, like sliding his hand along the edge of a piece of glass.]

Obviously. Simply because you think something's fine, doesn't make it fine. I expect most here would agree with me. You can't go traipsing through people's heads and act as though it's all right because you didn't do any damage.

[ However rude it might be, Hermann's on the bring of turning around and walking away. On the one hand, that would be no less than the man going into his head. On the other, he had saved him. ]

Friedrich Nietzsche, isn't it? [ With a snort. ] You can't be from Earth, to know that?

[ Wer mit Ungeheuern kämpft, mag zusehn, dass er nicht dabei zum Ungeheuer wird. Und wenn du lange in einen Abgrund blickst, blickt der Abgrund auch in dich hinein. He resents the implication, rather. Perhaps the Drift had threatened to actualize that. Something better leveled against Newton, really, only Hermann had gone too, that second time. There hadn't been a choice. Not if Newton would survive it. ]

Regardless, I've been clear. I answered your question, that's as much as I'll say about it. I'll thank you again, Mr...?

[They shall simply have to agree to disagree upon the subject of reading people's minds. It's not like Ushahin is going to stop simply after one conversation. He's had over a thousand years to justify to himself whatever reasons he needs to keep doing what he does.

He shrugs at the mention of Earth.]
If Earth is where you are from, than no.

[He'd picked that up floating somewhere in Hermann's brain, somewhere between the echoes of monsters, a man, and all that math. It's one of the possibilities he thinks of. Ushahin sees patterns in things, in the way people think, and the way situations turn out. Having a monster in someone's head, even a dead one, is never a good idea.]

Ushahin. I am called Ushahin Dreamspinner. No need to introduce yourself. I already have your name.

[ Hermann's eyes narrow. As if they hadn't been already. ]

I'll do it all the same. Dr. Gottlieb. I'd say well-met, but at the risk of being rude, it wouldn't be true. But then, [ with a jeering tilt of his head, ] you'd know that, wouldn't you?

I'm not advising you to lie, Mr. Dreamspinner, and pretend you aren't doing it, but you might make a minimal effort not to do it, to save yourself the trouble. I'll say it again -- they'll agree with me. You'll make a lot of people rather unhappy with you, carrying on like that.

[ Having said his piece, he turns to consider the apparent exit, warily squinting up, attempting to spot any other creatures before venturing forward. ]
