Intro Log: Eight Legs No Heart

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for June.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: June 10th-15th
Warnings: Spiders. Soooo many spiders. New people. Probably swearing.

For once, the new arrivals to Hadriel will not be waking up on the cold hard ground of the colosseum. Oh, sure, you'll still awaken in the arena - but this time the Door has been kind enough to ensure that you wake up comfortably arranged in a very nice chair. Or maybe not so comfortably. Some of those look pretty awkward - hopefully you didn't wake up with a crick in your neck! And hey, feel free to try to drag some of these super cool chairs to your new homes. They're probably not cursed or anything.

As you make your way out of the arena, be careful getting to close to the walls - well, except that's the only way out, so good luck! Chilling up on there waiting to get the drop on you are Skulltulas. These funky-looking spiders have squishy underbellies, but their upper exoskeletons are hard and very difficult to break through. They really just want to nibble you a few times, and maybe suck out all of your blood. No big deal, right? Have fun!

Have you conquered your arachnophobia and managed to escape? Great! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

Hmm? If no one works in the shops, where'd all this stuff come from? The stuff on the shelves are the only things not covered in dust.

[He thinks it over for a moment, and shrugs.]

Suppose I don't have much time to think it over. I have to get moving. I don't even know where I technically am yet, so that's going to make getting out of here a little tougher. Unless you have any ideas...?

Hope says he does it. If you asked him, he'd probably say it's magic or somethin'.

[Firo, as his tone probably makes plain, is skeptical. Not that he has an explanation.]

Me? I've been here for ages and I still couldn't tell you much about this place. You're in a weird cave full of monsters, a bunch of people who were kidnapped, and a couple people who call themselves gods.

Gettin' out is gonna be more than tough. Nobody's been able to do it yet.

[keep_smiling]

[He laughs a little at that.] I don't know who Hope is, but they'd have to e one interesting magician to conjure all of this up!

[He doesn't like the idea that no one's gotten out of this strange city, but it doesn't put a damper on his attitude. After a moment of thinking it over, Elmer nods with conviction.]

Well, someone has to be the first, eh? And that someone could be me! We'll just have to try everything you haven't tried so far.

“Interesting” is one word for it…

[Firo frowns—Elmer makes it sound like it’ll be so easy. ]

Oh, yeah? Where’re you gonna start, then?

Figure I'll start with some exploring. No sense in passing up a strange new place to check out. You never know if you'll get a second chance. Learn my way around, meet everyone living here, see if there are other methods people have tried... [He shrugs.] Nothing set in stone, you know?

A second chance? You're actin' like this is an opportunity.

[Definitely an oddball, this one. Though Firo can see his point in canvasing other methods for breaking out.]

If you're really stuck on explorin', you're gonna have to watch out for the monsters.

Isn't it? Someday you think you've seen it all, then all of a sudden you wake up in some strange city that's like nothing you've ever seen before. If that isn't an opportunity for at least a smile, if nothing else, I don't know what is.

[Sounds like there's a catch, though.]

Monsters? Really?

[foundafamily]

Sounds more like a time to frown or tear your hair out to me.

[Suddenly leaving home? Winding up in a place like this? It's all bad news.]

Yeah, the caves're crawlin' with 'em. They'll show up in the colloseum, too, especially when people come in.

[keep_smiling]

Oh, like those spiders? I guess they would count as monsters. They were pretty big, and they tried to make a meal of me. Thankfully I got some help getting out of there.

[Not that he has to worry about becoming dinner, but getting out of those webs alone was tough.]

I'll have to be careful, but I'll be okay. Besides, if we let monsters hold us back, we'll never make it out of here.

Yeah, the spiders. And there’s more where that came from too.

[Firo’s thinking along much the same lines. If somebody’s going to go boldly where the monsters are, at least it’s a guy that he’s pretty sure is immortal.]

So long as you’re not goin’ in unprepared. Do what you wanna do. It’s your funeral.

Well, now I know what I'm getting into, and I should have enough food to get by for awhile. So thanks for that!

[He's got a full backpack now so he's ready to go... somewhere.]

What do you plan to do, then? Hang around here forever? [This is an earnest question.] Maybe it's not all so bad?

Hell no!

[Even the thought. Firo shudders internally.]

I'm just gonna...

[God, what is he going to do. He's mostly been taking the days one at a time.]

...I'm not gonna rush off and do things I know won't help. But I'm gonna figure out how to get outta here and go home.

[keep_smiling]

But you're taking your time. That's fine! There isn't always a need to be in a rush.

[He shrugs. It's all good.]

Hang on. If you've been here awhile, where do you live? Where do people stay 'round here?

[foundafamily]

[He frowns. Who does this guy think he is, talking like Firo needs his permission?]

You don't need to tell me, pal.

[He waves one hand around vaguely in the air.]

Just about everywhere. There's empty houses and apartments all over the place, so people just grab 'em.

[keep_smiling]

Oh, well that's good. I can rough it if necessary, but it's always nice to have a bed.

With all these amenities, they really don't want us to try to leave, eh? Keep us comfortable if we're going to be stuck here. [It could be worse, right?]

What, like they're tryin' to bribe us?

[He supposes it all makes sense, though.]

I guess they can't have their 'food' runnin' off.

[keep_smiling]

Bribes? Food? Don't tell me they're fattening us up to have us get gobbled up by monsters. That won't work on me.

[It would still be unpleasant though.]

Uh, no, not exactly. It's your feelings they want, apparently.

[He's pretty sure he knows full well why Elmer's saying it won't work, but he feigns ignorance.]

Why do you say that?

Any monster that tries to eat me is in for a case of indigestion. [He grins mischievously. But, feelings? [That gets some blinking, but the smile returns.] How would that even work? Something like positive and negative energy, perhaps?

[Well, that's one way to put it. Annoyingly vague, but that alone probably tells Firo something more about this guy.]

No idea--for all I know, it could just be a cover story. What we do know is that Rage likes people to be mad, Fear likes 'em to be afraid, and so on.

Makes sense, I suppose? At least they keep it simple. But I'm guessing you haven't experienced this personally, from the way you're talking. I guess that's one more thing I need to investigate here!

[At least Elmer isn't going to be bored while here anytime soon.]

It's not your business whether I've experienced or not.

[That's veering too close to uncomfortable, compromising territory.]

I don't think you'd really wanna investigate it. You see people doin' some crazy things.
