Event Log: The Hills Are Silent

Who: Everyone!
What: The Silent Hill event
Where: Throughout the city
When: June 15th-20th
Warnings: Silent Hill comes to Hadriel, and with it, a few personalized monsters

On the morning of June 15th, a thick fog rolls into Hadriel. There's nothing quite terrifying about it yet, but it manages to drain the city of color, forcing a grey backdrop onto everything behind it. Feel free to go try to check it out if you want, just be careful, because it won't be too long until the sirens start blaring.

There's not exactly a reasonable explanation for where the sound is coming from: Hadriel doesn't have a speaker system, or any warning sirens in place for when something horrible happens. But you'd better find cover quickly, because shortly after the sirens start wailing, the city begins to change. Walls and furniture start to peel, revealing a bloody, hellish version of the city that you once knew. In addition, the monsters from the bestiary will roam the city, as well as a few other monsters that might hit a little closer to home.

Some characters may run into monsters which embody their own sins or insecurities. Some characters may be pursued by their friends' hellish mirrors. One thing is clear: you don't want any of these things catching you. Luckily, it isn't long before Hope makes a post, declaring the god temples as safe zones from all the creatures that are now loose upon the city.

The sirens will fade within a few hours, and the city will fall back to normal, the monsters will retreat back into the fog as if they were never there, and everything seems to be fine again, as if that terrifying experience was just some kind of twisted dream. You can tell yourself that, if you like... but that won't help much the next time the sirens start again.

"There are a lot of things that you didn't want to talk about, yes?"

Which is fair enough, there are a lot of things that he would rather not talk about, either, though they don't seem to be as essential as the things that Rey didn't want to talk about. So it is well within the limits that she just didn't talk about this. Especially if it wasn't a nice time because she had to live with the bad man.

Or she forgot. That's possible too - a lot of people forget having been somewhere before, or forget a place between being there and coming to another. It'd be with a lot of precedence.

"Doesn't everyone?" Rey shrugs, suspecting that there are a lot of people who don't share everything about themselves, even if such a thing were possible. "Think it'd be a big oversight to neglect, though."

Even if she were to get sent to another world after this one, she's certain she would've mentioned something about it.

"The thing is, you don't know."

And neither does she, and that's what's so frustrating and confusing about this whole thing.

"And neither do you, so it is very silly to deny it, yes?"

In his book, if you have family that seems nice, you should embrace it either way, but even so... it is clear that she just forgot, so it would even be reasonable to just accept it.

She snorts, her eyes tapering. "It'd be even more stupid not to at least question it."

Not silly. Rey isn't going to use that word. Muscovy seems to like it a lot.

"You don't have any proof whether or not this person you knew is from the future or a different universe. Just because she accepted responsibility over you doesn't make it fair to give to someone else." Even if they also share the same name and face and possible identity.

"Even if she is from a different universe she is still my mother so you are my mother because you are her, and you can't stop being family unless you kill them."

Not even then, strictly speaking, but the whole part about not leaving and not being able to sever all ties completely because it will just keep coming back around is kind of rendered moot by one of the involved parties dying.

There is that word again. The one that Muscovy was specifically told not to use.

Rey just gaps at the boy for a moment, his words almost more like a slap to the face than whatever sentiment they were meant to inspire. While she's pretty sure he's not doing this out of malevolence, he also doesn't seem to get it. Which is pretty typical for a kid his age, right?

Never mind his bizarre line of reasoning, even for a child. Rey gets up from her seat, bringing a hand to her forehead. Stop making her brain ache any more than it has to, Muscovy.

"Look, we should really start this over." Rather than getting angry, she forces herself to take a deep breath. "Am at a disadvantage here for not knowing who you are, but you apparently remember all of these things... It isn't about remembering who you are and your relationship with this different person. It just isn't possible that we're the same."

In her mind, Rey knows this for a fact.

There is a long silence as Muscovy considers this.

Not the possibility of this Rey being a different person, but... there was some reluctance about the title, the function, the name to attach to Rey. Family, yes, that much was sure, but what exactly? One of his people, was how he'd described it for a while, even.

There is no question to him that they are family, but while he got used to their experimental assignment of "mother", it is fair to consider that this Rey did not. Perhaps...

Perhaps they should really start this over. Experiment over, on to the next one, or perhaps redo it. He relaxes ever so slightly at this. All can be well after all, he just needs to choose a different road.

"Then I will call you Rey."

It almost comes as a shock to find the boy in agreement. With the impression she had been given so far, Rey figured he'd find some other reason to the madness in order to justify continuing this role her other self had evidently taken on. While the Rey here and now can't fathom what would possibly possess her, in any reality, to do such a foolish thing, it also doesn't feel right to shut Muscovy down completely.

So starting over sounds like the next best thing, if not the only thing. She doesn't know him, and who knows what he knows about her. Just how similar and different is she from this other person he calls mother?

Pinching the bridge of her nose, she sighs and sits back down. After a moment, she drops her hand to her lap and looks over to Muscovy next to her.

"All right." Her eyes dart away for a moment, before shifting back to the child. "So, who are you? Let's start with that."

Again, Rey knows nothing about him. May as well start by getting to know who the hell he even is.

This is nicer already. To not have Rey try to run away from him. It might also help with keeping her safe in the long run, especially if it leads to him finding out if the guy living with her is Gregory or not. Until then... in dubio contra reo. He won't trust that guy, not if he might pose a danger to a member of his family, no matter if said member remembers him or not.

"I am Muscovy Maglorion Prochainezo, and people from the future have told me that one day I will be very big and strong and have a lot of friends but I'll use part of big sis's name." That ones is still a bit weird to him.

....how isn't sure how to proceed behind that. What does "who are you" mean, past name and title?

Don't get too comfortable with it, Muscovy. There is always time...

But Rey doesn't run away. She doesn't seem very relaxed where she sits, either. While her vague question is met with a vague answer, it does tell her more than she did the other day.

"Take it the 'Prochainezo' bit came from Firo." Her mouth tightens into a thin line. She likes Firo well enough, but thinking that they could be close enough to all share the same name sounds absurd.

Then again, so did the thought of living under the same roof as a synthetic several months ago, and yet -- here she is.

"Originally. You adopted it from him because there was another Rey and you two were family so adopting his was logical. But you were the head of the household so I then adopted it from you."

Because a last name would tie you first and foremost to the leading power in the unit that shares the name, at least of the local parts of said unit. And that was obviously Rey, mostly due to the treehouse being hers primarily and her personality just being dominant between the three of them. And also, she might be the most fragile one, but she's also the strongest between them. (And it's fragile for a manner of comparison, anyway).

"Another Rey...?"

Sorry, Muscovy. As someone who's had multiple versions of herself over the last many decades, that could mean something else entirely in Rey's mind.

Ignoring everything else he said about name adopting and logic and being head of the household (whatever that means), she just shakes her head. "What do you mean by 'there was another Rey'?"

"Someone else who had only one name and that name was Rey. She was a bit like you but came from another world, so I don't think that she had anything to do with you originally. But it confused people."

Or at least potentially confused them. Brown hair, female, young-ish woman who can kick your ass, also her name is Rey.... well.

Rey can't decide whether Muscovy's explanation tells her more or less than what she knew seconds ago. A Rey from another world could mean anything as well, but she'll have to take his word for it. Not like she can expect herself to ever be the only one ever named Rey.

"Ah. So how did you know the other Rey -- the first one, not the second you were just talking about--?" Dammit, she's confusing herself now. "You said that you all were a family in this other world. How'd that happen?"

"You and Firo were friends first, but then you got closer and when the ship crashed and you built a house he moved in with you because you were so close. Like family, yes? And then both of you invited me to stay with you because we were good friends and I didn't have a house, and because none of us would just die and leave the others we made a very good family."

Because clearly the lack of a natural end point to the relationship is the best reason to call it family instead of friends. Well, a good one, at least. Family doesn't leave one another, and if there is no death that can part it...

The part with Firo doesn't sound too far-fetched. She may not have known him for very long, but he's given Rey no reason to distrust him. No more than anyone usually has, anyway.

Perhaps she'll have to ask him about it sometime. See what his thoughts on this whole thing are. It sounds like Muscovy might've already spoken with him.

"That's it?" Rey makes a face. "You didn't have a house, so you moved in with them, and then you were all some happy family?"

What the fuck, other-Rey?

Now she's just confusing reason and outcome.

"No, we were friends. And we became better friends until our friendship turned into a family. Because family isn't about being blood related, yes? Most of the time people who are blood related are family, but sometimes they are not. And often people become family who are not blood related.

You're family when you are so good friends that it doesn't matter who is stronger and who is weaker, because you will try to do your best by the other and not leave them forever even if you were fighting or hurting each other, because it is more important to stay together. It's bit like having an ally or a boss or a friend, but it lasts longer because it isn't important how much use you get out of the other even if you still want them to be safe and happy, yes? Family are friends that will never leave you as long as you're alive and will want your best, even if it isn't their first priority. So moving in together was a part of being family, but you can move in together without becoming family too."

Ironically enough for Muscovy, if it hadn't been for Nick, Rey would have listened to his explanation with a little more skepticism. As it is, she has a better idea of what he's talking about than she immediately realizes. It just takes a moment before she opens her mouth only to snap it back shut that she figures it out on her own.

Well.

Shit.

"May possibly have some idea as to what you mean." Since she started living with Nick, he'd said how he now saw her as family. And she the same, or at least close to it. She isn't certain. Family is a complicated subject for her.

... "Good."

She's been so silly this whole time, this is a rather baffling development. Not bad, mind, just... really unexpected.

Unexpected enough that he doesn't really know what to say to it - he had expected that more explanations would be needed - and it also seems that he won't have so say more, so he'll just sit there once everything is packed up and be happy in Rey's presence, because whatever she is to him right now, she's still family, and that is the most important.

For whatever reason, the kid seems pretty content now and it's beyond Rey as to why. She hasn't done or said anything particularly consoling, save for having not shot him down right away this time. While she still doesn't know what to make of all of this, she decides that there is at least a source she can refer to for confirmation. She'll just have to take that up if they all survive this mess.

After several moments of awkward silence, Rey starts to rise from the bench again.

"Should get going. Do you... need an escort to one of the temples?"

Rey herself has been avoiding them, but that doesn't mean she would encourage everyone else to do the same.

He shakes his head.

"They are not very nice."

He doesn't like all the feelings that are being put into his head in them. Because they are not his, but nor are they his people's, or other people's at that from what he has been told, so he has not only feelings in his head then that make him less of an individual, but also is still alone because they don't belong to someone.

If it's one thing Rey can agree with the kid on, it's the temples. She doesn't care much for them, either, and doesn't have to question Muscovy as to why he thinks the same.

"Know what you mean." Rey casts a glance at him, not sure what else to do. "Where would you like to go?"

For some reason, she doesn't think she can just leave him here.

"With you."

It's a honest answer, but one that he doesn't expect to be answered with a permission.

So he's mostly planning on just hanging back for a bit before following her again.

Sigh.

"Other than that. It isn't going to be very safe."

Then again, neither is leaving the kid anywhere outside of the temples, especially when things start to go dark again. Ugh.

"I will find a place."

A.k.a. he'll be tailing her in a distance and at a stealth level where he'll hope to not be noticed so she won't send him away.
