[ She could always drill it into, Adam. But you probably wouldn't like the way it happens. At the question, she nods. ] She ran a training clinic. [ Ran one, healed, was always, always thinking about how to improve things for the superhuman medical field. ]

[She clearly has experience, after all, even if this is definitely a little... different than one might expect in a more civilized place.]

But you don't... doctor, or heal, or anything like that?

[ That gets a one shouldered shrug. Not half as much as she'd like to here - her speciality has fewer and fewer applications without medication here. ] First aid. [ Her tongue presses against the roof of her mouth. ] Power work, if needed. [ Which it hasn't been. Not really. Not apart from herself, anyway. ]

[He can't really judge. First aid is all he can do, too.]

What do you mean by power work?

[He's curious - back home, magic isn't common, or at least Adam wouldn't have said it was. Here, it seems like nearly everyone has strange powers.]

If someone came in with their powers not working, I'd be able to tell them why. [ She very specifically avoids the words 'cure' or 'heal them' because that - as far as she's ever been able to figure out, hell as far as her mentor has ever been able to figure out, has always involved medication or time. ]

Huh. Does it work on anyone, or just powers from your world? Or only certain powers?

[It's not that he needs it - his magic is fine, even if he doesn't quite understand it - but Adam has a practical mind. He wants to know how things work, and especially something like this, where that could be vital to know someday.]

[ She tilts her head back for a moment, considering that answer. ] Works for people here, not like it does back home. [ Back home she could see anything without a problem, with one simple enchantment. Here there's far more to specify. ]

A lot of things seem to work a little different here. Still, who knows what those gods will throw at us next - something like that might end up being really useful.

[Hopefully it won't, but at least it's good to know about it just in case.]

Got a point there. [ She'd just like it to be useful at all. Make the things she does here feel less superfluous or something. ] ... What's different for you? [ It just pops into her head, because it seems like everyone has something or other about this place that they find odd, even if it's just something like the oven buttons working wrong. ]

Besides having to use the washing machine so our clothes don't come out vaguely pink-colored?

[He grins just a tiny bit. It's definitely been a learning experience here.]

No ley lines. Back home I can... sense them, I guess.

[ That is part of the problem. This is why she keeps trying to foist laundry duty off on others. That and she hates it.

But there are more interesting things in what Adam says than the laundry problems here. ] What are they?

They're like streams of energy, I guess.

[He wonders if maybe they're only in his world - but then, ley lines could easily exist everywhere and people might never know. It's not like they're obvious.]

Magical energy. Strange stuff happens on them, and some people - or things - are able to access the power for themselves.

[ kate falls silent for a long moment at that. they're nothing she's heard of before, but that doesn't mean they can't exist, either in her own world or others. and so many things in her own world sound strange when explained to others that she tends to take people's explanations of their own homes at face value, so, she eventually nods at the words. ] They don't exist here, then. [ it isn't supposed to sound like a question - it's just breathed out musings -, but she lilts just a little too much at the end, taken by the sudden thought of maybe they do, but seeing them would be too helpful in escaping.

she shakes her head clear of the thought. don't go there, galloway. ]

What happens if you get the power?

Not as far as I've seen.

[He thinks he would have noticed - he thinks he's too attuned to that sort of thing now, those rivers of magical energy. But it's always possible that they're different here, if they do exist, and they've been there without him noticing the whole time.

It's unlikely, but not impossible.]

You can use it - you can change things with your intention, or focus it on what you'd like. It protects me, and sometimes I can use it.

[ A kind of what some people here would call magic, then, she guesses. ] Sounds like they're useful. [ And like they'd be sought after by every Tom, Dick and Harry. ] Can anyone- [ she gestures vaguely for a moment ] claim them?

I think so, if they knew how. But it takes a sacrifice, and -

[He shrugs.]

Not a lot of people can do that. Or know what it means, really.

[It's easy to think of sacrifice as the most obvious - killing someone or something - but as Adam knows, that's not the essence of it. You have to give up something important to you. For some people, that won't be the death of someone else.]

Anyway, most people at home don't believe in ley lines. If they've even heard of them.

[ Huh. That's weird to her. Even if some of the stories of her people have been lost to time, even if they keep to themselves, the knowledge of who they are hadn't been lost, even before... all of it. ]

Never imagined that. [ people are usually all over power. It's why humans were so enamoured with the idea of Creatures, why their legends spoke of them as things that grant power. ]

Most people don't think magic exists at all. It must be a lot different where you're from.

[Since she can fly around like that and all, and seems to understand her powers and power in general pretty well. It was never like that for Adam - even the guidance he did get wasn't exactly clear or scientifically proven.]

[ It really is. Even if there was a certain level of secrecy, of superhumans preferring to keep themselves to themselves - well, she's always been in the parts of the world where you have powers, from her parents to her schoolmates. Even if she wasn't, humans are aware (were peripherally aware, are far more immediately aware now) that they exist. Like millionaires - you'll probably never meet them, but they're there.

Kate nods. ] Grow up with it. Parents have it, friends have it. [ In her part of reality, anyway. Once she started learning how to use her enchantments, she'd wear glasses and everything would be so damn colourful. ]

[Maybe that's how it was for Blue, growing up aware that magic exists somehow. That's nothing like the life Adam lead.]

I'm a little jealous. I don't really know how my magic works - or how any of it works, really.

[And Adam is such a logical thinker that that bothers him, even though he knows it probably shouldn't.]

I guess everyone's home are pretty different when it comes to that kind of thing, though.

[ That first part gets her to tilt her head. She could, theoretically, help him find out a bit about it. But it works best down here when she can see the powers in action and she's not sure how sensing ley lines would be activated, if it's always active and whether it would be possible to make something react to it if there really aren't ley lines here.

It's all a confusing mess of too many possibilities to narrow down, so she says nothing about the process going on in her head and instead settles for- ] Aye. [ It's odd to Kate, that so many people come from a version of Earth but have so many differences. That some people from an Earth have endless reserves and options available to them with their skills, magic, powers, whatever one wants to call it. ] Makes you look at things different. [ This place certainly is good at that, at challenging the preconceptions a person holds. ]

[He smiles then, a quick flicker of an expression. Adam is not naturally an overly cheerful person, but he tries to be polite, at the very least.]

But I guess I'm distracting you from work - and I should probably get busy too. Sorry about that.

[As interesting as he always finds it to learn about other people's worlds, he knows he really can't take up too much of anyone's time with simple chatting. He's not very good at it, anyway - but he does want to get to know the others at the clinic better.]

Not a problem. [ they have those things in common then. her relationship with chatting is complicated at best and cheer... well, that's hard to come by. although it's gotten easier to relax into positive feelings over the years, as she gets to separate herself from things in the past, she'll never really return to being as expressive as she was as a child. ]

You know where to find me if you need me. [ She'll probably be around in here, somewhere. Having a life is not exactly a thing in the murdercave, is it? ]
