Event Log: Fourth Wall, Part One

Who: Everyone in the city + Fourth Wall visitors!
What: Part one of the fourth wall event, hosted by Fear, Confusion, and Delight!
Where: All around the city
When: October 24th-November 1st
Warnings: Visitors from other worlds!

If you're not from around here, you may be wondering what's going on. You've woken up out of the blue in the colosseum, or near a temple, or in one of the numerous other locations in the city. You're somewhere underground and it's dark, cold, and maybe a little unnerving.

Luckily, shortly after your arrival, the road below your feet begins to light up in a gentle, warm glow. The light points you in a set direction and, if you choose to travel that way, will lead you toward the center of the city, where there is a large gathering of others who are lost here like you, people who might know their way around a bit more, and even some of the gods who rule this place.

There are lights strung up on poles throughout the large clearing, casting a comforting glow onto the tables beneath them. The tables are abundant with lots of food that looks simply delicious- though, none of it tastes quite like it should. The tarts taste like green beans, the mashed potatoes like cheesecake, and the chocolate seems oddly reminiscent of steak. In addition, there are decorations artfully placed around the meeting point. If you see them moving, don't worry- that's probably just your imagination.

Also distributed along the tables are shot glasses, filled with a sludgy, yellow substance. If you're brave enough to consume them, they taste strongly of mint and will give you a much needed energy boost, circumventing the need to eat or sleep for a full 24 hours! After that, however, everything hits you all at once, so use them wisely. Some of you may remember these shots from our How Delightful event earlier this year!

In addition to all of the above, there are also party poppers strewn around the area. Each popper can jet out some strange objects- glitter bombs, seashells, plastic dinosaurs, maybe a live lizard or two- so be careful! Feel free to use your discretion on these, but remember to keep it small!

Of course, you can always not travel that way. The rest of the city has plenty of places to explore- maybe you'd like to stumble in our Silent Hill zone, have a quick look around the alien orchard, or check out any of the god temples that can inspire their chosen emotion. Be careful not to get lost in the tunnels leading away from the cave- none of them can actually move you above ground, but you may run into a few monsters on the way.

For those of you who have been with us awhile, please bear with the gods while they try to adjust around these new folks! Join in on the festivities if you like, or try to orient as many of the others as you can. Start a community outreach program, start a fight club, introduce your parents to your weird cave girlfriend- nobody's judging!

Well. Some of us might be.

Enjoy the fourth wall event at Hadriel! Once you're settled in feel free to explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies.

Fourth wall characters do not enter with phones so they cannot reach the network- however, if you'd like to handwave that they somehow got ahold of Mello's Newcomer guide to avoid the 'where am I/what is this' sort of questions, then feel free!

[Asgore, by contrast, seems mostly delighted to see his old Royal Scientist. He brightens up at once, pleased to have spotted a familiar face as he advances with a hefty tome under one arm - not so hefty in his arms, it turns out. It might as well be a dust bunny with how easily he holds it there.]

Why, Dr. Alphys! Howdy!

[He opens up the book he's holding, beaming as he indicates a diagram with one huge paw.]

The books here are so interesting! Did you know that there is an entire ministry devoted to people with silly walks? How fascinating!

[His smile is infectious, and she finds herself grinning without meaning to as he seems so... happy. Untroubled. Carefree. She hasn't spoken to him in a long time, not properly, nothing outside of strained text messages and missed calls before...

Well, before everything. Before the human. Before the mistakes.]

I haven't actually g-gotten to read a lot of these books, yet, so that's interesting! Humans have, uhm, r-really funny government ministries if that's what they're doing.

[Could be like her 'human history', though. Nothing but a sham.]

Did you, uhm, d-did you just get here?

Yes, I did!

[He closes the book with a contented snap and slides it back onto the shelf - there are so many here, after all, and he could look up all the interesting things that humans get up to later. There seems to be little else for him to do here, other than eat food that it seems he must digest in the human way. But he will not complain, he thinks. Human culture is just so interesting!]

Though I confess that I...am somewhat disappointed that I did not get to see the sun for very long. It had been so long since I had seen it...

[The warmth of those rays had been little more than a fond fantasy by the time the barrier had broken for real.]

[The sun. She remembers Papyrus talking about the human breaking the barrier, and everyone getting out. Finding freedom. Where nobody had to die.

He's so happy. She doesn't want to take this from him. She can't.]

You, uhm, you p-probably won't be here too long! You'll get to see the sun again s-soon.

[He will, at least.]

In the meantime, t-there's a lot of stuff to do here, though. Like, uhm, the human walking book.

Yes, yes. Of course.

[He hastens to agree before pausing uncertainly. Alphys is - highly knowledgeable, he thinks, and she speaks from a place of authority (technically, in any case, as she never seemed quite so assertive in his mind), so it may very well do to make some polite inquiries.]

Ah...what is it you mean, exactly? Have you not been here for very long either?

Well, uhm, not a r-really long time? I got here about a month ago. But there's not usually this many, uhm, p-people running around. I think something, uhm, abnormal is h-happening.

[She's realizing he has... no context for this, and that's probably making it Difficult.]

I mean, n-not that just taking people to a new world is normal or anything! But uh, I'm not really c-certain of the specifics of how anybody is actually getting here.

[He's gathered that there are abnormal things happening, certainly, but beyond that his understanding is vague at best.]

I am not very much either! So we can have that in common for now, I think.

[Making light of the situation is something he can well understand, and that may make it easier to bear in the long term, he thinks. He hopes, in any case. It would be nice for her if he could ease some of the tension here somewhat.]

What is it you suspect, Doctor?

Well...

[It's kind of nice to fall back on theories, be asked about her expertise, be... friendly with Asgore. It's kind. It reminds her of something nicer than back home.

She's glad he got something better. He deserves it. Far more than her.]

Well, uhm, it s-seems to be some sort of temporal anomoly? Like, uhm, r-rips in the time space continuum. Like, uhm, the w-world itself opening up. So, uhm, not a g-good thing. But there are gods here, apparently real life ones? So they're p-probably trying to fix it.

[Probably. Hopefully. jeez.]

[Those are an awful lot of words and concepts he honestly does not understand. He does his best to nod, and his interest is genuine, but the sad fact is that he can only grasp the basics of it. This is not the Underground he knows and, if what she is saying is true, it seems many others are in similar situations.

A truly...curious conundrum, then.]

Gods. I...see.

[He doesn't see.]

And they are...trying to help, then?

I think so? I haven't actually s-spoken to any of them, though other people here have. The opinions on their, uhm, effectiveness v-vary. Some people have a lot of trust in them and their abilities, and others, uh...

[Others find a jar of bees and just lob it at their temples, because fuck you, I guess.]

But uh, they've been working on sending everyone home, but for some it's b-been almost a year. So it's... hard to tell. But I think they're doing their best.

And you are as well, I am sure!

[There's a warm fondness in his words, an absolute faith in his Royal Scientist. Or, er...ex-Royal Scientist? Either way, she's absolutely the most qualified to solve this sort of problem, isn't she? Why, she's smart enough to!

Asgore, it seems, lacks any sort of refined understanding regarding the sciences as a field, and does not grasp that there are many branches in which one may specialize, and that those branches are not interchangeable.]

[Oh, bless him. She forgets, so often, that Asgore just has... no earthly idea what's going on with science at all. He's trying.]

Uh, well, y-yeah! Kind of! As best as I can with, uh, a t-technology that I don't really understand. And might not be a technology at all. Maybe a magic? But n-not really a magic we know, and--

Yes. Yes, I am helping.

[That's just. We'll just go with that.]

What sort of different magic is there?

[There was...human magic, he supposes, though given the way of things, it seemed that this was not so common as it once had been. The idea that there might be more than simply those two kinds is perplexing, to say in the least.]

Well, uhm, there could be magic from other worlds. Stuff we d-don't know about in different categories. I don't think the gods are human, exactly, so maybe it's... god magic?? Which could be different?

[She doesn't have a very good handle on this.]

I...suppose that would make sense.

[He chuckles, gently self-effacing, as if to say oh, silly me.]

I have no doubt that you will figure it out, Doctor. You are the most brilliant mind Underground, after all.

Oh, w-well... thank you, Asgore. I appreciate it.

[It's been so long since she heard that from him. A kind word amidst all the horror. A reminder that he still believes in her, despite the pang of guilt that he shouldn't.]

If uh, we're all lucky, the gods will figure it out. Or, uh, one of us will. In the meantime, there's a lot of people, and uh, I think there's a party, uhm, t-thing, happening too...

Oh! That's right. I've seen the banners all over the place.

[He hasn't tried human food in a very long time. It should certainly be an experience! Looks like it's simply a day to try a lot of new old things! Asgore glances down at his Royal Scientist with a broad grin.]

Have you been along yet, Doctor?

Oh, uhm, n-no. It seemed, uh... kind of busy, you know? I didn't want to, uh, intrude, or anything...

[Wait, is he inviting her?? Oh god he wants to spend time with her oh gosh oh gosh]

But uh, if you w-want some company, I'm sure it'd, uh, be okay!

[Alphys is not what he'd call a particularly social monster, it's true, but he has the feeling it'd be good for her to get out once in a while. And here he...has the slight realization that this may be hypocritical of him to think. He had such difficulty leaving New Home once Tori -

Well, once things well and truly changed.

Perhaps this can be a new leaf for them both!]

I hear there's all sorts of human food there! It's been so long since I've had any. I don't believe you've tried some any, have you?

[For some reason, she feels like he won't be around very long. Maybe it's the fact that she still has it in her mind that he's dead. Maybe this is the only way she can handle seeing him here. Maybe... maybe she just doesn't know how to face him again and keep lying. She can't say.

But for now, she wants this. Wants to keep this little bit of happiness, just for a while.]

I haven't. You, uh... w-wanna go try it?

Certainly!

[Asgore beams. Operation "get the Royal Scientist to socialize a bit with other people, even for a little bit" is a success! Even if said operation did not exist until about five seconds prior, that does not make it any less of a success.]
