Event Post: Everyone Chill

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for Tranquility's resurrection event!
Where: All around the city
When: December 27th-January 7th
Warnings: Absolutely nothing creepy or weird at all.

The revival of Tranquility on December 27th marks a vast - if temporary, and actually completely fake - change to the city. Upon awakening that morning, the inhabitants of Hadriel will find the city changed from its usual broken-down dour cave self into a sparkling, clean, delightful island city. Instead of being surrounded by hard stone walls, the city is surrounded by warm ocean waters and soft white sand beaches.

Gentle waves lap at the shore, the sky overhead is perfect, wide and open. The spires have been replaced by shining skyscrapers, the roads are clear of rubble and paved neatly. The stores are quaint, windows no longer broken, and the items inside have changed too. Instead of simple canned goods and strange clothing, you might find delicate pastries, cool drinks, fresh fruit, and flowy summer clothes to match the city. How nice! How calming, really. Didn't everyone need a vacation? So throw on some flip-flops, grab one of the mopeds that have been provided, and enjoy yourselves!

As the days go on, though, you might notice one or two odd things. Maybe the pretty sun hat you picked up looked, for just a moment, like a grubby old baseball cap instead. Maybe that beach ball is a little heavier than it should be. Maybe the shining wall of that skyscraper feels more like stone than glass. Maybe - just for an instant - the sky above was solid rock instead of the gentle, calming hues of the sunset.

While there is a mild compulsion toward calmness and tranquility, towards accepting the city for exactly what it seems to be, that can be ignored - and the illusion can be broken, if you choose to try. But do you really want to? Isn't that croissant much nicer than yet another can of beans? Wouldn't you rather relax at the beach than run around, trying to convince all your friends that this is just the gods getting inside their heads again in an even more creepy and all-encompassing way than usual?

Come on. Don't be a buzzkill.

► This log covers December 27th-January 7th.

Curfuin laughs and clarifies. "I was my eldest brother's henchman, and I was not low-level. We Fëanorions were Noldorin princes and the lords of East Beleriand. After our father died, my brother was King of the Noldor clan, and I was his lieutenant in the fortress I built in the Pass of Aglon, and a commander at the highest level. He could not well have kept the Dark Lord's armies out of our lands if it were not for me and my guardianship of the Pass. I use the word henchman jokingly."

Oh, but it is fun to joke. Especially if you can get a rise out of your companion. Concussion or no concussion. The only reason Yukari hasn't seen Curufin like this before is because the other two times they've net, they had serious things to worry about -- like weeping but dangerous wraiths and buildings that desperately needed to be blown up.

But he is rather touched by Yukari's obvious concern for him, how he shepherds him to the clinic and takes note of what the medic says and then collects a complete first aid kit before they leave. (Obviously in case it is needed due to Curufin's current injury -- and perhaps in case Yukari has to deal in the future with Curufin's almost total lack of caution?)

"What is this Vogue Magazine you speak of? This is where they put the images of fools like me, who sooner or later must avail themselves of gauze and antiseptics because of their foolhardiness?" But he's laughing again, softly and with great enjoyment. "All right for the ladies, but what about the gentlemen? Will they also find me irresistible?"

And he thinks about the last time he ate. "Now that you mention it, it's been a while. Know any good restaurants?" Joke. There are almost no good restaurants in Hadriel.

{{ OOC: Sorry about the post above. I just realized that it consists of the same text, twice, plus a note from my post log file. ARRRGH!! How'd that happen? *facepalm* }}

Maketh shrugs. "All kinds, I suppose. I meant to teach Lilith some of it. The formal kind, I mean. What we'd do when they made us put on our dress uniforms. There's a certain grace to it."

There was never enough time for that, though. Maketh sighs. "I like it best when there's a crowd. I can...disappear."

Alright, well, his bid to distract Carlisle from his own nerves didn't work out like he was hoping... but at least this isn't full-on panic just yet. In truth he hadn't even been moving all that quickly, has just been coasting slowly through the waves, but now the ice alien comes to a complete stop and swivels his head around again to look at the man; as he does so, a large, icy tendril--likely the alien's tail end-- reforms from the water a few feet behind him to coil around his waist in a supportive fashion.

"Are you sure you do not want me to take a more conventional form so I can properly hold you?" Glacius asks, tilting his head as he tries to help Carlisle get purchase around his neck again. Any other methods of transporting someone in this form haven't even come to mind yet, given how he's never interacted with someone like this before.

Even 'not moving at all' seems to be too fast for Carlisle for the moment. "I'll be fine if what is that?! Something's—"

It's a good thing Glacius has that tendril coiled around his waist, as Carlisle lets go of his neck completely in his moment of panic, He shoves his hands into the water to fight off whatever has grabbed him, only to feel the icy surface of the serpentine limb. It's just Glacius; he's safe, as promised. "Oh, oh that's you. Right."

Reddening in embarrassment, he goes back to his initial problem. "I can hold on myself -- I think -- but it'd be easier if I could maybe sit on this bit you've got around my waist? I don't mean to ride you like some kind of great, watery horse, but I'd definitely feel better if I could hold onto my glasses with one hand, and your neck with the other, and still feel like I wasn't going anywhere. Figuratively. I mean, relative to your back, not as in 'not going anywhere' with this endeavor, obviously..."

Something in his subconscious is drawing him towards this muttering man. Maybe Ulaume senses a fellow psychic, even as closed off as his mind is towards other people--after all, only one person in all existence has a right to his thoughts.

And Ushahin definitely seems like he needs a hand.

He joins the 'crazy one' at some point, matching the other man's step without so much as a hello.

"It helps if you close your eyes."
glacius: (What the hell is on my head.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-02 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Glacius muscles' tense up against Carlises hand as the man grapples with his body briefly, relaxing only he feels the clergyman catch on to what's happening. He nods in reassurance, though the motion of his head slows as his friend continues speaking... and then it stops completely when he comes up with a possible solution.

"Sit on me??" Glacius blinks. That sounds... highly strange and undignified. But then, he was just wearing the most garish, unsightly garment ever to don an ice alien's body... maybe he doesn't have any room to complain any more. Besides, his friend's comfort is most important right now... he can put up with temporary discomfort to that end. "Ah... al..right? If you think that would be easiest for you, then... yes. We can try it."

The surface of the water ripples as the ice alien reforms more of himself from the ocean, the full length of his long, thick serpentine body completely formed now. It means it's going to take him more work to stay afloat, but he's willing to try this out. His tail end releases Carlisle, freeing him up to try and climb on, or... however it is he's going to do this.

Though made even more uncomfortable by the obvious apprehension Glacius has with his idea, Carlisle slides onto his back once it is formed, determined to give it a try now that he's unfortunately talked the alien into it. He has to admit that it does feel... safer. Easier. He can wrap his legs a little around the alien too, giving him even more purchase.

"That does, ah. Feel better on my end, admittedly." He wraps one arm around Glacius' neck carefully once more, holding his glasses with his free hand and glad to find he doesn't slide back into the ocean. "Is that too uncomfortable for you?"

"Ah, so you're a prince. That must have been thrilling. And yet, you chose to battle? Or were you just never destined to have the throne due to your birth order? Or are Elves perhaps battle inclined by nature?"

More opportunities to hear Curufin's past. How can he resist? He gives it proper consideration, though. To date, Curufin is the first prince he's met. Kings in his land are not born of princes. They just simply become.

"Vogue is a fashion magazine, where they take hip celebrities and models and put images of them on display. But I could see them opening a special section titled This Month's Biggest Klutz just for you. It could be a new fashion trend, with gauze t-shirts and saline perfume."

He can't help but chuckle at his own humour.

Oh, boy, Curufin's bisexual. Or, at least, that's his assumption since he has children. Elves still give birth by proper means, right? And that gentlemen line definitely caught his attention. Time to tease this poor Elf for all it's worth. (Don't let Yukari fool you. He's bisexual, too. He's just not as apt to express it.)

"Only the big, strong men that have to rescue the meek and meager. They're usually covered in hair, though." He gives a nonchalant shrug. "I mean, if you like that sort of thing, I'll help you break a few limbs to attract one."

"Figures that you haven't eaten. That's probably why you hit your head so hard. But sure, I know a great restaurant." He starts to lead the way down a path to the houses. He says the next part almost sadistically. "It might not come cheap, though."

[He's a little distracted by what he woke up to this morning. All the sunshine, the beach, the fresh air--what, did he and everyone else get moved again in their sleep? Damn.]

[It's surreal. He hasn't seen the ocean since he was very very young. All this is probably why he steps into the road without looking both ways. After all, vehicles like mopeds haven't been a thing where he comes from since before he was born, as far as he knows. He's definitely not seen the like before.]

[It misses him by over a foot, but it still gets him jumping back and yelling. So much for tranquility.]

Flick was trying to relax, live by his chesnari's example. Ulaume was at least enjoying himself. Relaxing and hedonism was definitely something he knew how to do. Personally, Flick blamed his time with the Kakkahaar, all hedonistic with a taste for dark magic. It left a bad taste in his mouth. Flick however, was more practical, and he had a hard time just letting go. It was definitely something he needed to work on. The reality warping that surrounded them gave him the perfect opportunity. The illusion was good. If he focused hard enough, he could break it, maybe, but did he want too? Who really wanted shatter such a pleasant illusion? Hadn't they all been through enough?

The androgynous figure grinned at the rather terrible shirt Dorian had in his hand and shook his head.

"Considering there are other options? I don't think so. It might make a nice dishcloth though." Sorry Dorian, Flick couldn't help being practical.

It was weird to be back at the beach, by the water, and it made him long for the days where he'd be with Lor, Mima and Lileem on their boat. Just the four of them. It wasn't exactly homey, and they were too scared to stay in one play more than a few days, but it had still been their routine. Flick watched the waters for a moment, letting himself drift back, as if maybe when the waters waves retreated, it could take him too.

Come to think of it, everywhere he went, it seemed is life was stressful. Full of fear. Was that what life was? Or was that just Wraeththu, and the worlds were testing them with growing pains? Flick glanced over, trying his best to be unconcerned with the fact that Cal was there too. Couldn't he just enjoy it?

If it was silence he wanted, Cal would give it to him--for a while. The awkwardness was palpable, but then it had been since he'd gotten here. And there really wasn't anything Cal could say or do to dissipate it. He couldn't even assure any of the other hara that he wouldn't do what they were afraid of--only that he hadn't. Yet.

He tried to ignore the other one for as long as possible, staring out at the water, but eventually he sighed and leaned back on his hands, speaking softly without looking at him. He must have been in a really good mood.

"Not wanting company, I take it."

Flick let out a loud exhale. "I was just wishing the water would take me away and I wouldn't be stuck here with you." Wow. That sounded harsh. He didn't mean for it come out that harsh. Flick flinched. "Sorry."

He forced himself to look at the other har. "You seem happy. It suits you." Happy was much better than crazy. But, because Flick couldn't help himself, he thought of those times before Orien had died, when Cal had come back and tried to roon him senseless. Wipe away Pellaz. For a while, it had been nice. Until it wasn't anymore. He could see the appeal though.

He didn't even react to that declaration--a lot of people wanted to get away from him. He just shrugged. But the apology was unexpected. He chose not to comment. It was progress, and there really wasn't a reason to antagonize anyone right now, least of all a har he had to live with.

"I could get used to it." It probably wouldn't last very long, but...it was much less effort to just be content instead of angry. It was almost easier to breathe.

"I suppose that means it won't last long now that it's been spoken aloud."

"It's nice." Flick shook his head. "It was never meant to last that long. It's just pretend. Another mind game, only this one is pleasant. But will it still be when it shatters?" They were still talking about the city, right?

"You're different, with Pell."

Flick was trying to enjoy the peace, to let all his problems go. But he couldn't help but keep thinking of all the things that needed to be done. No, maybe he needed to take a lesson from Ulaume and Cal and just....be.

"Prince is a very rough translation of the Elvish word. It doesn't mean royalty in the sense that later ages meant it. In my time, the First Age, it merely meant those who were descended of one of the three great leaders in our Great Journey from Middle-earth to Valinor. My grandfather, Finwë, was one of these, and he led one-third of the Elvish people who made that journey, and this group became known as the Noldor clan. And so he was called King of the Noldor, and later his children and grandchildren were called princes. It was not supposed to be simply because we were of that line, but because we were very powerful beings, in the sense of our gifts. That was the essence of our aristocracy. But even then, I think we made too much of it. It didn't take long for my father and my Uncle Fingolfin to begin quarreling over precedence and over whom Finwë loved the most."

"I was the fifth of my father's seven sons, and therefore never destined to be a king. It did go by birth order. My eldest brother Maedhros was king after our father got himself killed, but he didn't keep the title long. He yielded it to Fingolfin, whose son Fingon inherited it after his father's death. That's a long story, which I won't tell at the moment, but we Fëanorions thereby lost the kingship and never got it back again." He chuckled darkly. "And much good did it do Fingolfin's line! Their luck was almost as bad as ours."

"Of course I chose to be a warrior. My father was one, by nature, and I was very much like him, so naturally I followed suit. Once we were in Middle-earth, war was the natural condition of life, and I could not have been a leader on the Marches if I had not been willing to be the first to draw sword, the first to charge into a horde of Orcs. I liked that role."

And he laughed. "Oh, I would cheerfully pose for your Klutz of the Month issue! But I am not sure about these hirsute gentlemen you speak of -- they don't sound like my type. The last time I met one, he tried to strangle me. It was not what I would call a romantic encounter!" Of course, Curufin is leaving out a few facts -- such as that he tried to kill Beren son of Barahir and help his own brother Celegorm steal the man's bride. But, let the past be past.

"Besides, I am not exactly meager." And he lifts an arm and flexes his bicep, which is as solid as you might expect of the arm of one who worked at the forge all of his life and was furthermore, a mountaineer. He grins.

And he follows Yukari down the path. "Oh, really? And what might be the price of this meal?" he asks, blithely.

What was he supposed to say to that? It was the truth and they both knew it. There wasn't any objection that could be made that either of them would even consider accepting--for however brief a time. Regardless of what--or who--they were talking about.

"Different?" He actually had to stop and think about that for a moment--he'd never really considered that, but it was so very obvious now that Flick had brought it up. He had to try hard not to laugh.

"I suppose I am. He tends to bring that out in people. That optimism of his in incurable. And maybe a little contagious."
glacius: (Ehhh why not.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-02 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright, so there's a human straddling his back now. Glacius lets out a rattling breath, the sound tapering off into something a little more at ease when he feel's Carlisle's hands at his neck. "No. It's--I mean, it's strange. Different, maybe, is the better word. I've carried my fair share of humans ever since being brought to this cave, just never like this."

Now he gives off a light chuckle, trying to make things feel less awkward with humor, before he begins winding through the water again. It's a little bit more difficult now--having the human's legs wrapped around his body like this inhibits his lateral undulation somewhat, making it hard to effectively use the movement of the waves to propel him. As Carlisle probably knows by now, however, he's not the sort to be deterred--it just means he probably won't be able to swim about for as long before he has to head back to the shore to rest, which probably suits the clergyman just fine. Until that point Glacius coasts them towards the sunset, watching the bright blue sky fade to a dimly glowing golden-orange.
glacius: (Regarding you.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well. That answers one of my questions. I was going to ask how long you have been in this cave--you do not seem terribly surprised by my appearance like most newcomers, yet I have not seen you around before...

[Glacius explains himself, then returns to the actual topic of conversation.] I think I can guess why, if that equipment you come with is standard issue. The only flight I've ever engaged in has been in a space-faring ship... which is beautiful in its own right. [And just as unobtainable as an actual, not illusion-based sky.]

[A slight cant of their head, and a completely blank expression as they call a single word back in turn, almost befitting of the terrible wordage she's let befall them.]

Boo.

[Still. They raise their arms overhead once more, fully up to the challenge. Sike them again, ma'am. They got this.]

"In my defense," Carlisle returns as he makes himself as comfortable as can be while wearing shorts and riding atop an icy serpent in the ocean, "I doubt you were toting them through the water as a giant snake at the time."

Despite the oddity of the situation, as well as the unusual sensation of Glacius' body moving under him, Carlisle finds it much easier to turn his attention to their surroundings. The water pushes against him as they move, but he feels stable with Glacius around him, supporting him from two points; nothing from below can get him, as any danger would have to literally go through Glacius to reach him, rather than simply pulling him free from the alien's neck (which is no challenge, given his flimsy physique). The buildings are more distant than ever as they make they way toward the setting sun.

And no longer worried about losing his glasses, Carlisle can look through them to see that Glacius is right -- it really is beautiful. His grip loosens from time to time as they make their journey and he arcs himself away to get a better look at the water and the cool depths of it -- the darkness below is still terrifying, but kept at bay by the protection the alien's strange, new form offers.
glacius: (Fond contemplation.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-02 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Certainly not, hence my remark that I've never carried anyone like this," Glacius responds, puffing out another breath as he adjusts. "I have ferried a human across a body of water, however. This is just, ah... taking it one step further, I suppose. Anyways it's not like I have any room to complain, given how much I kept pestering you to come out with me."

As the alien speaks, his tone becomes more and more unbothered-- adaptable as ever, this one. And apparently he's not the only one getting used to this decidedly new situation; when he first felt Carlisle's grip loosen he had turned his head back to make sure the clergyman wasn't in the process of slipping off him again, and instead had seen him actually leaning back, staring out not only at the setting sun, but down into the water's depths as well. That seemed particularly significant given his overwhelming fear of it before... Glacius smiles gently, returning his focus to his ferrying duty.

"So how are you finding your first ocean excursion now?"
glacius: (Certainly.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Glacius is just lounging about, his head lifted high on that long serpentine neck as he scans the beach and watches all of the various people frolicking about. Aside from swimming, he has no idea what sort of activites constitute a fun beach excursion, so he's trying to learn by observation; some are simply laying out in the beams of the sun, which sounds horrifically unpleasant to a creature that detests heat. Others are swimming about, some testing their endurance while others play with brightly-colored rubber balls and foam noodles; yet others remain on the land, digging and making crude structures from the wet sand with shovels and buckets.

It's as he's taking it all in that he spots a familiar face coming up to him, belonging to a person he's taken quite a liking to for his politeness and quiet consideration (that fiasco with the dragon aside!). Glacius stretches in the shallows, then pulls himself up from laying on his side into a neat cross-legged sit, his back straight. "Pell! I have been well. Enjoying the change in our surroundings, regardless of how real they actually are... I have never gotten a chance to enjoy the beach like this before, but the cool waters are quite agreeable. How have you been?"
