What: The intro log for January
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.

As has become tradition within the good (well, okay) city of Hadriel, new arrivals will awake on the floor of the half-destroyed colosseum. Confused and disoriented, you may be wondering where you are and what you're doing there. Don't worry! Someone will probably tell you sooner or later, as long as you get out of the colosseum alive.
Oh, right. About that. Along with the poor, innocent, vulnerable new arrivals are a number of other new friends! Well, maybe less 'friends' than 'horrifying monsters', but are you really going to be picky? Wandering the arena are Shambling Mounds. These creatures are large, unattractive piles of vaguely humanoid-shaped vegetation. They hit hard, they can take a lot of damage, and if you're really unlucky they might manage to engulf you with their weird plant bodies. If that happens, you'd better try to get free fast - otherwise they'll just walk off with you stuck inside and kill you later at their leisure.
The Door appears to have cast a wide net for 'plant monsters', and while Shambling Mounds are the only ones that can actually hurt you, it's managed to pull in a number of smaller, less dangerous carnivorous plants. Some of them are even kind of cute! So if you were looking for a pet venus flytrap or a new pitcher plant, you're in luck. Scattered around the colosseum are carnivorous potted plants, just waiting to find a new home.
Make a new plant friend, or get eaten by one, or run screaming! Whatever you choose to do, once you find your way out of the colosseum there's plenty of other distractions. Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers January 10th-16th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
1. Colosseum
Careful, what if it takes a bite out of your finger? [ Small smile. ]

[ He gathers the plant up carefully, taking care not to press any of the hanging tendrils to his chest and end up damaging them. The plant is going to need all the strength it can get, as Castiel tried to find it something it can eat without harming other living things.
Or well, maybe he can ask one of the gods to keep the plant alive. Poor plant.
Once he's upright, he takes a good look across the space, studying the other man. He looks fine, and the armor makes it clear that he can take care of himself. Something like that could have come in useful, now and again. ]
I appreciate your concern.

[ Something about the way the trenchcoated man is holding the plant, as though he has taken a responsibility and will do all that he can to discharge it as best he can. He has a kind face. Lucky plant! ]
No thanks needed. I try to be helpful. But you seem quite capable of looking after yourself? [ Rhetorical question. That angel sword speaks for itself. ]

[ He frowns at the change in topic. It wouldn't be the first time someone had talked about biting and meant that they actually bit people. His first conversation with the vampire Armand came to mind.
He hummed, softly, and pulled himself straight, turning on the spot to look the stranger over. There's no threat, it seems, but there's no need to put his blade away either. It would be unwise on a day of new arrivals. ]
I can look after myself for the most part. What's your name?
no subject
[ He sees the blade stays in the man's hand. However, that is probably a good idea, considering Curufin is a complete stranger, and furthermore, these Shambling-Mound-things are quicker than they look to be. ]
That will be a definite advantage in this place! I am Curufin Fëanorion.

And it has been.
[ He recognizes it now. They're neither one of them new to this, though Castiel has not met him before. There's always a first time. ]
Are you out here to hunt the creatures, or to protect the newcomers? Or...or are you just fond of plants?
no subject
I came to protect the newcomers. Although I can't say I'm sorry to kill a few things, if they are threatening people who have never harmed them. [ Besides, he's a killer by profession, you might say: a warrior. He has to stay in practice. ]
I'm not more fond of plants than of other features of the natural world. But. . . oh. . . you're making a joke? [ Grin. ] I haven't had the experience of fighting anything that is of the plant kingdom before. It is a most interesting kind of battle.
Castiel, are you a newcomer? Or have you been in Hadriel for a while? [ Castiel strikes him as not being a novice. It's partly the way he grips his weapon, as though he's had a very long time to become an expert, and it's partly something less definable. ]
{{ OOC: Question: would Curufin be able to sense that Castiel is a supernatural being? Elves of Curufin's generation, born in Valinor, the land of their gods, are able to recognize the gods and demi-gods of their canon, even when they are disguised. I was thinking that this ability might function cross-canonly. But that's up to you. }}

I have been in Hadriel for two hundred and fourty seven days. Um. Eight months, one day, three hours and twenty-one minutes, precisely.
[ The devil is in the details? Maybe not so much. It's just the way that angels look at the world. ]
In my experience, plants don't like fire very much. If you can wilt them, they should withdraw.
That is...only a guess, of course.

[ And he smiles at the precision. His own clan, the Noldor, tend towards exactness in all crafts, but even in everyday life. ] What do you do, scratch a calendar on your wall at home, or do you just have a good mind for calculations?
I expect you're right, and I hadn't thought of that. I have a fiery spirit but can't smite with fire. So, perhaps a torch? -- it shouldn't be hard to find something to burn, and I have flint and steel to strike a light. [ He starts to look around, keeping an eye out for wood or wooden objects. ]
Do you come to the Colosseum every time the Door opens?
no subject
[ Cas had an advantage, of course. He could light things on fire with a thought, if need be, but it's not really something he does. He leaves that to people, with their matchbooks and lighters.
Castiel lifts his plant up a little higher, blinking at it curiously. It's not really that threatening. If anything, the catcher plant is fragile, with its feeder tubes hanging further than the pot. Cas is thinking of looking for some string so that he can suspend it. ]
No, not every time. Actually I try and avoid it. I'm... I'm still recovering my courage. I don't know how better to do it than to come here.
It helps, when there are people who need your help.
no subject
[ He gives Cas a curious and kindly look, and he speaks quietly. ] You've had some trouble?
I feel the same way. Finding someone to help is the best thing.
