I agree. [Thank goodness they're not talking about him anymore.] I assume this is some kind of ceremonial piece, symbolic in every way?

[Wow okay there you flatterers. That's actually a really good way to derail Emily's train of thought, at least for a little bit.]

It's called a furisode. It's traditional formal wear for girls in Japan. [She holds out her arms, showing off the long sleeves of her outfit.] A regular kimono has shorter sleeves.
glacius: (Wait that seems a little off.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-27 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[Glacius lets his eyes drift up the sleeves, then over the rest of the garment, taking in the seams and the patterns.] Interesting--you humans find such intricate makes for your garments. The long drapings that hang from the sleeves are not all that different from some adornments that my people were, though!
tongueamok: (➣ a relative fondness for notes)

[Carlisle nods, also examining the garment, albeit with less scrutiny than Glacius.]

I see. So you would wear this to all formal events in your homeland, then? Do just people from your village wear these, or is it a trend more far-reaching?

It's kind of a national thing. [And it's kind of a deep topic (she loves fashion, okay, of course she knows about this), so she's going to just keep it light and easy for now.] There are different fabrics for summer and winter. This kind of kimono is for unmarried girls.

[It's a lot, she knows.]

I'm picturing you in a fancy cape now, [she says to Glacius.] Something that sparkles like fresh snow.
glacius: (I don't... w h a t.........)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-29 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
[He's about to ask what sort of fabrics would be worn in the winter, but then she goes and drops that remark and Glacius sputters slightly--the sound is brief, quiet, and utterly flattered.] Well I--I don't know if I am anyone grand enough for a shining cape. That's the sort of thing that only the Grand Councilors of my people wear... but I... that you can even see me in such a thing is a very high complement...
tongueamok: (➣ no lack of confidence)

[A smile -- yes, a smile -- crosses Carlisle at Glacius' reaction. Maybe the alcohol is loosening him up after all. He's lived with the alien long enough to discern that purple coloration in the ridges of his cheeks.]

I believe Emily may be onto something, actually. A cape would look good on you, wouldn't it?

See? [Damn right she's right.] Back home it's mostly superheroes who wear capes, and you are totally heroic.

[Don't think she didn't see that smile, Carlisle. You must be drunk.]
glacius: (Head bowed.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[At first Glacius had just seemed flustered by the flattery, but now, the more he thinks about it, the more he seems quietly taken aback. Prior to attending this gathering, he had spent a good chunk of time worrying over whether or not donning the sash would be too presumptuous of him, worrying over whether or not Emily--or anyone else for that matter--still thought he deserved a garment given out of friendship and admiration. Now here they are suggesting further adornments--adornments that have great significance in his culture, no less--while continuing to talk him up like he's some hero, some great protector.

He's not sure how to handle it, and in truth he doesn't even feel entirely deserving... but he appreciates it deeply, nonetheless. Maybe more so than he knows how to say. Giving a quiet rumble, the ice alien bows his head, extending both hands palm up--one towards Emily, and one towards Carlisle.]
Th-thank you. Thank you both. I, ah. The support means more than I know how to express. You honor me with your words.
tongueamok: ❄ glacius ❄ (➣ blessed peace)

[personal profile] tongueamok 2017-01-30 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Not sure of exactly how to return that gesture -- should he take Glacius' hand? It's not that he hasn't before but should he now? Would doing something that isn't an appropriate response embarrass the alien somehow? -- Carlisle opts for a formal bow himself, one hand around his front, the other folded around his back.]

The true honor is having you by our side, Glacius.

[Nice save.]

[personal profile] unfollowing 2017-01-30 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Emily follows Carlisle's lead, executing a proper, formal bow with hands together in front of herself.]

Yes it is. Itsumo osewa ni natte orimasu. "You always take very good care of me," pretty much.

[Look, Mom, letting Grandma get on my case about polite speech came in handy after all!]
glacius: (I'm proud of you.)

[personal profile] glacius 2017-01-31 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, neither of them ended up returning his gesture, but given that they're different species from different cultures and he didn't preface his with anything, perhaps that should be expected. Glacius flexes his fingers uncertainly once, then withdraws them and folds his arms behind his back as he mirrors their bow. This is nice too--still reminiscent of the ways his people interact, if not more formal than what he'd attempted a moment ago.]

And I will always do my best to. If I can make life in this place worth living for the people I am close to... if I can make the bad times even a little bit more bearable... then perhaps I have accomplished something despite being displaced from my world after all.
