Event Log: Dead Ringers

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Dead Ringers event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 25th
Warnings: Evil doubles, so we can assume manipulation, violence, murder, and maybe some nasty words

Everything seems normal on the morning of the 16th - actually, everything seems normal about the city for the entirety of this event. Nothing is strange, nothing is obviously wrong. Well, except that the population has mysteriously doubled, and the new residents each look exactly like one of the old residents. So weird! Definitely not ominous at all.

At least until your new double gets down to business. After all, their only goal is to ruin your life, and that can take any form. Smashing your favorite coffee cup? Telling your worst enemy they're right? Kissing someone else in front of your girlfriend? Brutally murdering you and then hiding your body in a closet so they can more effectively destroy your life? The possibilities are truly endless, and the only way to protect yourself is to kill your double first. They're not really open to negotiation, after all - but they sure might pretend to be in order to trick you.

So watch your back, and try to make sure that really is your best friend and not an evil clone masquerading as them. Boy, that would be awkward. If you can stick it out until January 25th, good for you! But if you didn't manage to and your double survives until the end - well, just as a final 'fuck you', there's a chance you'll come back to life and remember every awful thing your double did. Hey, at least that'll make it easier to fix, right?

► This log covers January 16th-January 25th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If your evil clone happens to take you out, please let us know here, and remember that you will not revive until the event is over.

[They had been racing over the city by this point trying to find Frisk and Asriel as soon as they could. Chara knew that the doubles were harmful by this point and that there was one of their own. Neither of them should be subject to whatever it was like nor could probably handle it. They were LV 20 and the only way to get 'worse' from there was to go up.

ERASE. Nobody besides Chara needed that.

By the time they hear Asriel call out to them, Chara is out of breath from running so much. Give them a second "buddy".]

Asriel? Are you...alright?

youplayedyourself: Always cheerful (* Snapdragon)

[personal profile] youplayedyourself 2017-01-18 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Wowie, look at 'em go! They're really working up a sweat, huh? It's actually kind of embarrassing. To think they'd be struggling so hard when it's already futile!

Guess that's determination for you, huh?]

Gosh, Chara, were you looking for me...?

That's new, isn't it?

[He wears that sweet, sad, heartful little smile of his, but it's - it's a little bit off. Flattened, simplified, losing its fangs and big goatlike eyes to almost imitate Chara's features. Almost just a cartoonish smiley face.

Almost the kind of face a flower might wear.]

But I'm fine, you know. I'm used to it! "Mommy, Daddy, help me!"

"Chara! Where are you? Come back, Chara, please!"

[That smile starts to distort, take those familiar boss-monster features on again.]

"Hope will bring them back, right? They'll come home if I just don't doubt them, won't they? They wouldn't leave me alone all over again!"

But... hee hee...

But nobody came, right?

[Once upon a time, a kid covered in dust walked into a certain Home.

There, they were greeted by a flower who told them a little story as they searched for the keys to a padlock. About how he called for help but nobody came. How he was certain it was his best friend even though it wasn't Chara's face that stared back at him.

But they remember how terrified that flower ended up being of them.

Realization is like a punch to the gut. But it's obvious now that this is not Asriel, nor the Flowey that Chara remembers from the Underground. His...double, then?

* You equip the Real Knife.

Their next words hiss out, coated in red.]

Where is he?

[They are not going to play your game.]
youplayedyourself: Resentment, anger (* Petunia)

[personal profile] youplayedyourself 2017-01-19 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
You mean you don't know?

[It's a practiced, effortless gesture: shrug, wink one eye shut, shake your head condescendingly. Almost like he's the idealized, all-powerful version of himself again.]

The human attacked him with everything they had. He was struck with blow after blow. ASRIEL had the power to destroy them. But... ASRIEL did not fight back. ASRIEL smiled, and walked away.

Wounded, ASRIEL stumbled home. He entered the castle and collapsed. His dust spread across the garden.

[Sound familiar?]

But at LV 20... I know how you think. This is probably boring you, isn't it? Heard this already. Can't wait to skip it. At LV 20, a thing like you isn't even CAPABLE of caring. You're probably relieved, in fact, aren't you? One more burden out of your hair.
somuchlove: icon by crenando @ DW (108)

[personal profile] somuchlove 2017-01-19 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Familiar enough for them to grind their emotions down even farther. Chara knows that story as a tale of their own sins. Try hurting them with anything else. You'd get farther.]

Then why am I demanding his location from you? I have had the fact that LV 20 means nothing in this place pounded into me to the point I can recite it. Regardless of that he is still my Best Friend.

[They stare at him evenly. This double will not get anything out of them, no bit of emotion because clearly that is what he expects.]

Now I will ask again. Where is he?
youplayedyourself: Fickleness, haughtiness (* Larkspur)

[personal profile] youplayedyourself 2017-01-21 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Boy, how predictable! They really ARE just like he said they'd be. No reaction at all. Don't care. Not bothered. Just concerned with progressing from point A to point B. Gotta beat the game somehow, huh?]

Funny. You'll believe "LV 20 means nothing here" the second you hear it, but you won't believe "I don't like this, Chara" at all. Must be nice to pick and choose. Must be nice to only care about what you can use.

What a shame, then, huh? I'm just another Asriel that's outlived his usefulness to you.

I can't tell you where he is, because he isn't anywhere anymore.

["I don't like this, Chara."

Things wore down over time, as did bodies under the effects of poison. Yet Chara could recall with clarity the things said to them over the course of their match towards death and a better future for Monsters. Things that stuck with them.. Begging for them to stay determined. They cannot give up just yet.

"I don't like this plan anymore."

...but that's all out the window when "Asriel" speaks next and something sparks in their eyes. Something kind of awful.

But using that red voice is a dead give-away, isn't it? To what Chara is feeling when their best friend's double says the original isn't here anymore.

Or maybe they just don't possess the right context for that statement.]

What happened to him?
youplayedyourself: Frigidity, coldness, thanks for understanding me (* Hydrangea)

[personal profile] youplayedyourself 2017-01-23 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
How would I know? If his best friend forgot about him, then why would I have any idea?

[After all, it's exactly like he said, isn't it? Each time you die, your friends forget you a little more. Just a quiet little afterthought. Motes of dust that nobody will find. last words that nobody heard, a presence that won't be missed. His grip on this world slips away a little more.

Boy, what a shame, huh? You'd think he'd have been USED to calling for help and having nobody come. Guess even he can't learn his lesson, no matter how many times he has to repeat it!]

Does it make any difference to you? I can tell by that voice of yours: this isn't about anything but EXP. Whether I killed him, or someone else did, or he simply went home to go turn back into a flower... you're just thinking about LOVE. About using this as an excuse to kill.

You're just thinking about how right now, I'm in your way.

[Asriel's double is actually wrong on that front. Any thoughts they may have had in regards to what to do with his double went out the window with a single comment that bounces around uncomfortably in their head.

"Or he simply went back home to go turn back into a flower."

It can't be. It can't. There's only one flower in the Underground and he was nothing like Asriel was. It can't...be...

....Flowey...?]

If it was only about EXP then I would have kill you already. What do you mean by 'turned back into a flower'?

You mean you actually don't know...?!

[Oh, this is too rich. Too, too rich. The real thing had convinced himself Chara hadn't really been there, so of course he hadn't brought it up, but the idea Chara had been watching and still hadn't clued in is too good.]

You mean all that time, you never stopped to wonder why that stupid flower was so bent on keeping you here? Never questioned who the one person he still cared about, even if he couldn't really care about them, even was?

Boy! You really ARE an idiot!

[Flowey.

Asriel...was Flowey. Flowey. What...? How did...?

"It's me, your best friend."

Your best friend. Because they had assumed he had been talking to Frisk. Because the only routes Chara had walked down only saw that monster Flowey became with all of the SOULS. Because they hadn't seen the end of the one they stood on.

Oh no. Oh god.]

...how?

[Chara has sorted it out, but the question falls out of their mouth regardless. They had seen - felt - Asriel die. How did he become Flowey?]

Gosh, Chara, I hope you'll forgive me if any of this sounds repetitive. Just mash [X] through the parts you've heard before, okay?

[They're the type, after all, to tune out boring dialogue. Always were impatient. Always were pragmatic.]

I remember when I first woke up in the garden. I was so scared. I couldn't feel my arms or legs... my entire body had turned into a flower! "Mom! Dad! Somebody help me!" I called out.

But nobody came.

[They'll recognize that line, at the very least.

* Isn't that right, buddy?]

Eventually, the king found me, crying in the garden. I explained what had happened. Then he held me, Chara. He held me with tears in his eyes, saying, "There, there. Everything is going to be alright." He was so... emotional. But for some reason...

I didn't feel anything at all.

I soon realized I didn't feel ANYTHING about ANYONE. My compassion had disappeared! And believe me, it's not like I wasn't trying. I wasted weeks with that stupid king, vainly hoping I would feel something. But it became too much for me. I ran away from home.

Eventually, I reached the Ruins. Inside I found HER, Chara. I thought of all people, SHE could make me feel whole again.

...

She failed.
Ha ha...

[But that's something Chara will recognize too, won't they? Had no problem whatsoever with cutting down their mother, their father. Went back again a few times just to see all the different ways they COULD do it! Matricide is worth a few different lines of dialogue, right? They HAVE to do it, just to see what Flowey will say THIS time! What an excuse, huh?

He almost wants to laugh.

Instead, his smile softens, grows heavier. Looks all but indistinguishable from the stupid look the real Asriel keeps wearing.]

I realized those two were useless. I became despondent. I just wanted to love someone. Chara, you might not believe this... but I decided...

It wasn't worth living anymore.

Not in a world without love.

Not in a world without you.

So... I decided to follow in your footsteps. I would erase myself from existence. And you know what?

But as I left this mortal coil... I started to feel apprehensive. If you don't have a soul, what happens when you...?

[Well... only he knows the answer, as it turns out.]

Something primal started to burn inside me. "No," I thought, "I don't want to die!"

...

Then I woke up.

Like it was all just a bad dream. I was back at the garden. Back at my "save point." Interested, I decided to experiment.

["Experiment." Boy, if that isn't a clinical, stone-cold way to talk about suicide! He doubts Chara will mind, though. Why would they care, huh?]

Again and again, I brought myself to the edge of death. At any point, I could have let this world continue on without me. But as long as I was determined to live... I could go back.

Amazing, isn't it, Chara? I was amazed, too.

[Alright, "Chara," you can stop scrolling. This is the part where you get that new dialogue you were hoping for!]

Over time, I tried looking for answers. Why was I still here? Why had I survived, when you hadn't? How had I been turned into a flower?

The answer was closer than I expected.

The king had a new royal scientist, one who claimed she had created a robot with an artificial soul. The king had commissioned her to study an alternative way to free monsterkind. She couldn't just build more robots with fake souls, after all, because that whole premise had been a lie from the start! So she began researching the human SOULs, and found that they possessed a certain unique quality. The will to live, the desire to change fate, attachment to life.

A power she decided to call "Determination."

She had a plan. If determination was what made humans so powerful, then couldn't monsters be determined, too? If they had enough in them, then maybe they wouldn't need any more SOULs to break the barrier. A few monsters sent along their relatives who had fallen down, expecting that either a miracle would happen or they would receive the dust to make funeral arrangements a few days later. They were all goners anyway, right?

So, Chara... if you don't know how I became a flower, I'm guessing you don't know the results of that experiment, do you? Hee hee... you'll really crack up about this!

They melted. They couldn't handle it! Just like your pal Undyne, they melted away into nothing more than sludge! All those poor saps who'd been shipped off to her fused into hideous abominations under her care! And you know what she did? Locked them away in a dark basement, and ignored the families that missed their relatives ever-so-much! She very literally swept all her mistakes under the rug, and gave them a kick or two when they squirmed a bit too conspicuously!

[He laughs! How can he not? He just cracks up. It's funny, right? Imagine the look on ol' Snowdrake's face if he knew that his mom was shut away in a tinier Underground of her own by a one-monster barrier, being fed dog food! Now THAT'S comedy!]

They weren't her only mistakes, though. Alphys... she had the idea she would need a vessel. One that could hold human and monster souls, so it obviously had to be neither. Now, since we died - I'm sure you've noticed - those golden flowers from the surface you loved so much had sprouted up in the garden. She plucked the first one that our shared dust had nourished, and she pumped it full of all the DT she could extract.

"What happens when something without a soul gains the will to live?"

Well, Chara, what do you think happens?
somuchlove: icon by crenando @ DW (160)

[personal profile] somuchlove 2017-01-26 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
[They remember Undyne's death as the Undying, he body melting as she stood with the biggest grin on her face. Declaring that Monsters would defeat them one way or another because she had her friends behind her. In her heart, her SOUL.

Chara had dismissed it. But the image of someone falling apart into a puddle of nothing wasn't exactly something that left you easily, despite everything. Apply that to any other Monster is an awful mental image. And even though Chara had never been to the True Labs, never saw the skeletons that Alphys had in her closet, it...

He continues. A Flowey sort of laugh. Been awhile since they heard him laugh. The last memory Chara had of him was Flowey stating they had a sick sense of humor - and he wasn't wrong. But that's not the point. "Asriel" continues and even if he hadn't laid out the implications of a 'golden flower' that happens to be given Determination.

And that's the question in the end, isn't it? What happens when something without a SOUL gains the will to live?

What does it gain Chara?

* It's you.

...you. Him. Flowey happens.

[Chara's just automatically talking by this point. Something ugly is forming in the pit of their stomach. Something clawing at them, digging into that vast amount of rage and balling it up.

The target? Alphys? Flowey? "Asriel"? Themselves?

Who knows? Part of that doesn't matter. They just look at him - and for once Flowey has Chara off-kilter.]

You've finally caught on, huh? Sure took your time, Chara!

[Boy, if that isn't a familiar look! Not too far off, he thinks, from the look on their face in a timeline that the real Asriel never even saw. One where he starts to talk about backing out after they've come too far to give up, after there's already a body count behind them. He doesn't like this plan anymore, Chara! Maybe... just living on the surface with you wouldn't be so bad.

You've got a SICK sense of humour, Chara.

Too bad he never managed to realize he had a pretty sick sense of humour, too.]

You get it now, don't you? The Asriel you love is DEAD. He's not just dead, he's dead! He'll never, ever love you again. All that compassion and sweetness and innocent are as dusty as he is! There's nothing left now but an empty husk that's just PRETENDING to be a monster!

And it's all your fault.

[Once upon a time, lived a kind Monster.

A kind Monster, although he was young, had a wealth of kindness that led him to help a human child who fell to the Underground. Despite how strange the human child was, they eventually became Best Friends. They shared a gift, a pair of Lockets that declared them Best Friends Forever.

But then one day, the human child had an idea. They asked the kind Monster to gather buttercups to poison themselves, in an effort to release Monster kind from their prison. And on the human child's deathbed, the kind Monster absorbed their SOUL. They passed through the Barrier and subsequently died.

So. This is the hell Chara had condemned Asriel to.]

There was never a chance. It's hopeless. You can't glue dust back together. You can't build a SOUL out of faded old chalk smears! There's nothing left but fumes. Just enough magic for him to hide the flower in a paper-thin disguise.

How's it feel, Chara? History's repeated itself. Because you MADE him trust you, you lead him to his death. And now, when he wakes up again, you're going to see him. He'll smile for you, he'll cry for you, he'll go through all the motions.

But you and I both know that it's fake, now, don't we? We both know that he won't really mean any of it. You can't make him happy anymore. He doesn't care about you anymore. He just acts the part to trick you - to manipulate you - into caring about him! He'll never really know happiness or love EVER again, all because he met you!

You're empty inside, just like me.

[Flowey's words, once they walked down the path of Genocide. The piece of dialog tastes like dust on their lips and Chara's not completely sure why they're repeating it.

Ah. That's right. Chara isn't quite so empty, now that they were in Hadriel. A sliver of a SOUL was better than no SOUL at all. LV 20 cannot blot out all your emotions, which is why they deduced that beyond was the only way their double could be. If the Gods were provoking them, then there was no worse than that.

And it's what happens when you take too much. Nothing but poison, aren't you Chara? Look at what you've done. And so on. No wonder this double thought this meeting was only about LOVE. Chara had not killed Asriel with their bare hands but they may as well have done so.

It would not have condemned him to be this creature. It would have not forced him to suffer the consequences of Chara's actions.]

...I cannot say how this makes me feel.

[Still, there is one thing that's very clear. Asriel had suffered consequences that were not his to bare. Chara would not make him shoulder anymore.]

I called for help, long ago and he came. And even if I am a demon, I will come if he calls. Even if he cannot feel I will be there. It isn't much, but it's all a creature like me can do.

Golly, Chara, it's a little late for that, isn't it? He already called. He's already dust.

[Asriel laughs, a high-pitched, distorted giggle. A very familiar sound, probably. Funny, in a way, how he mimicked the methods of the toughest person he knew when he found himself needing to endure something painful. Wear a big smiley face you don't mean at all. Laugh off the things that hurt.

Aren't you proud, Chara? Aren't you happy?

He's become just like you.]

Words don't mean much at all when you're talking to someone who isn't here anymore, do they?

[He shrugs, turns his back, intent on abandoning Chara right where they are.]

No wonder I think you aren't exactly the greatest person.

You're--

[Lying.

But Chara can't say that. Can't call something that still wears Asriel's face a liar. Can't...look at his double because it's like looking into a mirror and nobody likes looking at themselves.

"Kill or be killed." Look at what you created. You look people in the eyes Chara.

But they can't.

It's clear Asriel's double plans on leaving and Chara can't bring themselves to stop him. And his final words are another slap to the face, the cherry on top of things. It's nothing new. Nobody thought Chara was a good person and obviously Chara themselves didn't think it either. They would have not met Asriel if they thought they were 'good' by any stretch of the imagination.

But it's one thing to hear the expected from other people and from Chara's own thoughts. It's another to hear it from their Best Friend.]

...I suppose so. I am a horrible person and clearly you know it as much as I do. And if Asriel wishes to no longer be friends with me then I will respect that. We know what kind of poison I am.

[Chara kills, over time or right then and there. At the end of the day they always poisoned those they loved. Asriel was doomed to live as a SOUL-less flower. Asgore and Toriel had a wedge driven between them, a loving family destroyed. Frisk was now LV 4 because they were weak and got possessed by a real demon.

It hurts. It hurts but it would be better for Asriel if they were no longer in his life. And if his double was right and he was....gone, then Chara would have to talk to him after he revived.

They turn to leave themselves. In Chara's opinion...there was nothing left to be said.]
