Event log: Buried Alive

Who: Everyone participating in the event!
What: The event log for the Buried Alive event!
Where: All around the city
When: January 16th-January 19th
Warnings: Claustrophobia, starvation, premature burials, all that fun stuff.

On the morning of January 16th, half of the game's characters wake up to find that they are not where they were when they fell asleep. Instead, they're surrounded by a claustrophobic darkness, cheap satin cushioning, and an intense feeling of weight directly above them. Unfortunately, all of this adds up to the fact that your character has been buried alive.

Luckily, they'll have their phones, which can function as a source of light, communication, and hopeful distraction. They'll be able to talk to the other folks who are buried around the city, as well as their would-be rescuers. Thanks to Hope's timely post on the network, the rescuers know where everyone is, even if they're not sure who is buried where.

This is where organization, planning, and a little bit of luck come in! The aboveground characters will be supplied with shovels via the armory and are encouraged to go dig up their buried friends. Dig quickly though, because the air supply is pretty thin, and by the morning on January 19th, the characters who are not yet dug up will find that oxygen deprivation is a rather unfortunate way to die.

So, grab your communicator, grab your shovel, and get to work!

► This log covers January 16th-January 19th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► Please remember to report any deaths to the Death page!

O-Oh yeah, I talked to him.

[He talked to a lot people, actually; probably more in the past three days than since he got here, but there hadn't been a lot else to do. Conversations had been a huge help, even if they'd almost all been entirely through text, and focusing on trying to help keep other people calm had allowed him to stay so too.

And okay, right, his name.]

It's Chris. You're...?

[Chris feels like he should probably know this guy's name, considering he seriously owes him.]

Beyond.

[There was a point in his life where he kept this name secret from the entire world; now, it rolls easily off his tongue, without hesitation. He used to have many names, all false - B, Backup, Rue Ryuzaki. Beyond Birthday is the only one he's held onto, the only name he still claims for himself. The only name L wasn't able to take from him.

He finishes tapping in his message, presses send, then glances back up to Chris, gaze sharp.]

How are you feeling?

[It's not mere pleasantries; this is a diagnostic question.]

I'd say nice to meet you, but...

[There's nothing nice about this situation. But he does file the name away mentally, offering a weak shrug at the question.]

Tired. Kind of dizzy.

[He feels pretty awful, really, but nothing water and rest won't fix. He should probably head to the clinic instead of home, though; walking that far is a little too much to manage at the moment.]

Yes, the circumstances are less than ideal.

[He slips the phone back into his pocket, then folds his arms across the tops of his knees, still staring sharply at Chris.]

That's to be expected. You've survived a trauma. Is there anything else? Any injuries you've sustained?

[Survived a trauma. Right. Yeah, Beyond isn't wrong, but it just feels weird to hear it; it's like his life has suddenly become nothing but surviving one trauma after another, and he still doesn't know how it's come to this. Even more, he realizes he can honestly say--]

Yeah. Been through worse.

[It's simulateously an awful thing and an empowering one. He's been through worse and survived, and he survived this too. As bad and as shocked as he feels, he's already gone through this.]

I-I'm not... I don't think I'm hurt.

[Aside from his hands and some assorted bruises anyway, but those are minor issues. If he can manage to stand up and walk he'll be pretty much okay.]

[Beyond allows his eyebrows to arch up in surprise at Chris' statement.]

You've survived worse than being buried alive?

[He won't push for an explanation - not now, at least - but the invitation to talk is there, if Chris wishes to take it. Sometimes talking about a thing is helpful.]

Crazy, right?

[This is all crazy. It's crazy that he can say he's been through something worse than being buried alive, and it's even more crazy that he's been buried alive and so actually knows what he's talking about. It's crazy they're in some alternate dimension in a cave full of monsters and run by some sort of god-like creatures, one of which feeds off terrifying them. None of this should be happening.

But it is, and they have to deal with it.

He recognizes the invitation to talk for what it is--especially since he's done the same thing several times here so far--but even if he weren't so exhausted that speaking takes effort he's not sure he would've even tried to explain. It's too complicated, too many layers and too much to say, especially to someone he just met.

So instead he glances around them briefly, trying to figure out where he actually is, before looking back at Beyond.]

I uh... T-The clinic's nearby, right?

[He'd rather go home, but there's no way he can walk that far right now. Besides, he knows Sam's been found already, so meeting up with the others at the clinic is probably easiest.]

Not especially, no.

[He's heard crazier. He's lived crazier things, lived and died and been brought impossibly back to life twice now. Beyond's barometer for crazy isn't tuned like that of most other people, and it's a sad statement on their current state of affairs that being buried alive ranks low enough on the scale of bad to worse for both of them.

But there will be time enough to unpack that later. Beyond nods and points in the direction of the clinic.]

That way. Do you need help getting there?

[He glances toward the indicated direction, mentally trying to map out how far it is, but concentrating is so difficult and he just gives up.

The question from Beyond is a good one, and he's not totally sure.]

I, um...

[He moves a little, awkwardly, trying to coordinate getting his feet under him to he can stand up, but his muscles are stiff and his bad knee doesn't want to move at all. Still, he manages to stand up; his head spins a bit, but his leg holds his weight and he thinks he can talk.]

I think... I think I'm okay.

[At least for the short distance to the clinic, and he's already asked enough of Beyond.]

And... Thanks. Again.

[Beyond nods, solemn in his acknowledgement.]

I'm glad I could help.

[Only after he's said it does he realize the full truth of his words.]
