Event Log: A Blustery Day

Warnings: Harsh weather conditions

Good morning and welcome to your Hadriel Weather Forecast! On the doppler today is a high chance of rainfall, coupled with dark, angry clouds, and even some hail an rumbling of wayward thunder! If you're wondering "we're in a cave, how can we have weather in a cave", then congratulations, you're doing exactly what Confusion wants you to do! Which is- you know, be confused.

For the next few days, the weather will be aggressively stormy, with severity ranging from 'mild annoyance' to full-on 'batten down the hatches and hold on'. While no tornadoes will touch down, you might want to prepare yourselves for a few dashes of lightning, winds that could knock you over, and golfball-sized hail ready to cause a couple of bruises and broken windows!

Speaking of which, are any of these houses weatherproofed? You... uh, might want to look into that, if you've got the time. Surely a few friends could help you out- just make sure you stay warm and dry! The shops aren't stocked with any new coats or anything, so you'll have to make do with what you've got. Maybe some of you still have your ugly christmas sweaters!

Wait, hidden Grim Reaper thing?

[Was George a reaper? Now Jo is curious.]

It has its ups and downs.

[looks supremely awkward] Oh. Yeah. I was a Grim Reaper. Took souls from people about to die, then saw them on their way to--whatever's next. They never told us what it was.

I'd imagine. For example, I bet the monsters fought back.

...I know what Reapers do. [She doesn't remember very much about her reaper. It all happened very quickly once the blood loss got to her.]

Yeah, they sure did.

...oh. Probably had to fight them or stop them or something like that. [she feels awkward and probably looks it. she can see how she'd easily be seen as a villain for not preventing the deaths in the first place. even though she'd tried]

Was it scary?

[knifecollecting]

I didn't mean it like that. [Jo had heard of rogue reapers, or ones being controlled somehow, but she had never encountered it herself.]

The monsters? Everything's a little scary, even when you're used to it.

[toiletseat_girl]

[shakes her head] No, it's cool. I know that we're not exactly wanted around by people. Or, we wouldn't if people knew about us.

How long have you been--you know?

[She didn't mean it like that either, but it's easier to let George assume that than explain she's been dead for years back home.]

Hunting? I officially started a few years ago. I spent a lot of time learning though.

[yes, probably for the best. George has issues when it comes to death. lots and lots of issues]

I'd guess it's not exactly easy to do.

[Who doesn't? Most people do.]

It's kind of in the middle. Some things are hard. [Other things are pretty simple.]

[it gets even more complicated when the death you're talking about is your own. but she'd know about that, too, wouldn't she?]

What made you--you know--decide to start fighting?

[Jo would indeed know about that.

She looks down at her hands, pausing for a long moment. It almost seems like she might not answer, but-]

My dad did it. He died when I was young.

[toiletseat_girl]

[it's weird, isn't it?

George shifts in her seat awkwardly. It's apparent she's stepped into something she probably shouldn't have and there's something like guilt tickling her conscience]

...oh. Jeez. I'm--sorry.

[knifecollecting]

[Jo would have lied if the question really bothered her. She's had time to come to term with death. Her father's, her own...She still has trouble with her mother's.]

I don't need apologies. It's part of life. [Especially a Hunter's life.]

[toiletseat_girl]

[death for George is a touchy subject. it both repels and fascinates her, so she feels like she was doomed to step into it sooner or later]

Well. Okay. It's just that--isn't that what a person's supposed to say when someone dies?

[Jo shrugs. Maybe Hunters are too used to death. She remembers her teachers saying it, but the regulars at the Roadhouse just drank.]

It's been a long time. I don't need an apology.

[so are most Grim Reapers. George, on the other hand, fought back at every opportunity and now she looks supremely awkward]

Okay, well . . .I guess time heals. Or something like that.

[knifecollecting]

[Jo clears her throat, looking a little awkward herself.]

Yeah, something like that. What about you, how did you get to be a Reaper?

[toiletseat_girl]

[thank goodness for subject changes]

It's not "get to." It's had to. Apparently, I filled some other guy's quota of souls to be taken, so I was stuck with his job. No choice in the matter.

[knifecollecting]

What, really? [Jo shakes her head.]

That's some bullshit.

[toiletseat_girl]

I know, right! They kept going on and on about it being destiny and fate and meant to be. Not a word about choice. That's 'cause I didn't have one.

[knifecollecting]

So you just have to do it until you accidentally reap your replacement?

[toiletseat_girl]

Yuuuuup. And too bad for them if they're married with kids, 'cause they won't get to see 'em anymore. No contact with family. Ever.

[knifecollecting]

[That's usually how death works, but Jo resists pointing that out. It still seems unfair, to be stuck on the planet and not allowed to see anyone you knew.]

That's rough.

[it is, but she's newly dead and fairly self-centered, so that hasn't really occurred to her. mostly her own circumstances have. so the idea of a Reaper with a spouse and children is a novelty to her]

It's stupid, is what it is.
