Event log: Who What Where Wendigo

Who: Everyone participating in the wendigo event!
What: The accidental-cannibalism-turned-horrifying-monster event that is the Who What Where Wendigo event!
Where: All around the city
When: Feb 14th-March 1st
Warnings: Cannibalism, body horror, evil monsters lurking around.

Don't forget to check up on the Wendigo Guide that Ami posted!

On February 14th, Rage and Fear decide to give Hope a little bit of help taking care of the residents of Hadriel - they'll provide some food for awhile. How nice! Except, of course, that there's an extra ingredient in this food. A can of beef stew? Yeah... that might not be beef. But hey, it still tastes pretty good! Unfortunately, some spirits slipped through the Door last time it opened, and they're ready to possess anyone who participates in cannibalism - even if they don't know it.

Anyone who eats the provided meat will be possessed by a wendigo spirit. Over the course of twelve days, they will transform into a monster that feels little but rage and hunger. While at first it can be explained away easily enough (people are super annoying, and isn't everyone a little hungry most of the time?), by February 18th, wendigo transformations are impossible to ignore. A few days after, on February 22nd, the anger and cravings of the wendigo spirit will overcome all other emotions, and possessed characters may begin hunting.

The physical and mental transformation will be complete by February 26th. The possessed characters will have lost themselves completely at that point. While physical healing (done by a character with Hope's blessing or another healing ability) can turn back the physical and some mental effects, they will remain possessed until death or until Hope removes the wendigo spirit - which can only be done on the altar of Hope's temple. So have fun dragging your angry, possessed friends there!

On March 1st, Rage does Hope a solid (because she feels sort of bad) and kills all remaining wendigos. Upon revival, the spirit will be gone and the character will be fully recovered. Hopefully no one holds what they did while possessed against them!

[ "Under the weather" is accurate if "under" means "infected" and "the weather" means "from eating human flesh." The thought has to be shoved way, deep down in her mind, because remembering even for a moment of what she'd done makes her feel as if she'll vomit (and she had, before, for all the good it had done). ]

Good. [ Comes the quiet, but firm response. Less victims. It can't just be Cecily herself, but she hasn't yet spoken with the others. What could they possibly say to each other, turning into creatures with no way out? Had the kids on the network said anything about whether or not these monsters attacked each other, too? ]

Yes. [ The Inquisitor replies, almost on a breath. Yes, they know. Rainier, Dorian... Cullen. It had been fine at first, when they were all so sure that there had to be a way out, but... not so much, recently. And she won't let herself hurt them, or anyone else. If she has to separate herself from their home until it passes (or worse, as she knows that it always gets worse), then she will. ]

They know. None of them are-... sick.

[ Thank the Maker. ]

[ For some reason, sick makes it sound so much nicer than it really is. She grinds her teeth. It's not the flu, or a cold; it's not something the other woman will get over in a day or two with some rest and soup, no, it's something so much worse than 'sick': it's cursed. ]

What will you do? [ Sharon is absolutely torn. She was certain that, before, the best way to deal with all of this was take out the infected before they turned, but now? She doesn't want Cecily to die. ]

[ No, it isn't a sickness. It's possession, which has never been something that has worried or affected the Inquisitor until now. Mages were always in danger, being exposed to the Fade and open to demons, but she had no magical abilities. She's heard stories of once-innocent people turning into abominations, only to be struck down by templars, or going on to slaughter others. She's seen a few, even, having dealt with the rebel mages and the twisted future in Redcliffe, but this is, obviously, much more personal. It's scary in a way that she hasn't really come to grips with, not when the wendigo spirit manages to calm some of those terrors, replacing them with a growing hunger. Hunger, and anger.

Not at the moment, though. She's still enough of her self that she looks more despondent and desperate than anything. ]

I don't know. [ She admits quietly, wondering if Sharon is considering trying to kill her. Has she gotten her hands on a gun? That might be quick, from what it sounded like. ] I... was going to leave, to get as far away as I can while I... try and find a cure.

[ But she can't, won't, go to Hope. Not with all he and the others have done. ]

Some here have magic, they may find a way.

[ Weak, she thinks. Weak. Death would be safer for everyone, yet you won't ask for it. ]

I don't... [ The last thing Sharon wants to do is squash down any hope Cecily may have left in her, but she doesn't want to lie to her, either. The people important to Sharon don't deserve lies, or half-truths, no matter how easy they would be to give.

But they're easy for a reason, and she falters. Unwilling to lie, Sharon has no words, and instead does something uncharacteristic of herself: she reaches out to take Cecily's marked hand in one of her own. ]

I don't want you to go through this alone.

[ The gesture startles her and she jerks, physically, back from the contact. Still, Sharon has her hand in her own, and she's overcome with the disgust she feels for herself, at not having a solution, at becoming a monster, at having accomplished nothing in all the months she's been here. Her hand is warped already, cold with long fingers and sharp nails, not to mention the anchor that already mars it, but the other woman doesn't seem to care enough to avoid touching her.

It brings a shock of humanity back into her system that had escaped. ]

Neither do I. [ Cecily admits, with the ghost of a smile. ] But... we have these devices. If there are any changes or breakthroughs, I can get in touch with everyone right away.

[ Not so much once her time runs out, but that's another story. ]

It's enough to know that- [ But she falters, not quite sure what to say. ] ... That not everyone is affected. That there could still be a way out.

[ Other than death, that is. ]
