Event log: Who What Where Wendigo

Who: Everyone participating in the wendigo event!
What: The accidental-cannibalism-turned-horrifying-monster event that is the Who What Where Wendigo event!
Where: All around the city
When: Feb 14th-March 1st
Warnings: Cannibalism, body horror, evil monsters lurking around.

Don't forget to check up on the Wendigo Guide that Ami posted!

On February 14th, Rage and Fear decide to give Hope a little bit of help taking care of the residents of Hadriel - they'll provide some food for awhile. How nice! Except, of course, that there's an extra ingredient in this food. A can of beef stew? Yeah... that might not be beef. But hey, it still tastes pretty good! Unfortunately, some spirits slipped through the Door last time it opened, and they're ready to possess anyone who participates in cannibalism - even if they don't know it.

Anyone who eats the provided meat will be possessed by a wendigo spirit. Over the course of twelve days, they will transform into a monster that feels little but rage and hunger. While at first it can be explained away easily enough (people are super annoying, and isn't everyone a little hungry most of the time?), by February 18th, wendigo transformations are impossible to ignore. A few days after, on February 22nd, the anger and cravings of the wendigo spirit will overcome all other emotions, and possessed characters may begin hunting.

The physical and mental transformation will be complete by February 26th. The possessed characters will have lost themselves completely at that point. While physical healing (done by a character with Hope's blessing or another healing ability) can turn back the physical and some mental effects, they will remain possessed until death or until Hope removes the wendigo spirit - which can only be done on the altar of Hope's temple. So have fun dragging your angry, possessed friends there!

On March 1st, Rage does Hope a solid (because she feels sort of bad) and kills all remaining wendigos. Upon revival, the spirit will be gone and the character will be fully recovered. Hopefully no one holds what they did while possessed against them!

► This log covers February 14th-March 1st.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply

"Or both at once," she repeats. "And that'd just be child's play."

Rey will never understand how grown adults can get their kicks out of acting like kids. But then, it's not like they included her that often.

The way Firo mentions his 'Family' again has her raising a brow. Something about the way he says it strikes her as odd, like not family in the blood-relations sort of way. It would have made more sense if Firo had said cousins or siblings or something.

Whatever.

"That sounds... charming." Firo certainly seems to think so.

He shrugs. "I think it depends on if you're their current victim or not--you know how it goes." Or he assumes she does, given that it sounds like she witnessed similar things. So long as they're not the one being tormented, people'll have a ball at the antics.

"So how often did you get in on all this?"

Firo occasionally enjoys such things, admittedly, but he can't imagine someone like this lady doing too well with them.
circumitus: Because you're marine grade... You rascal. (you need 400 proof or marine proof)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-05-05 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sort of."

She may have witnessed much of it, but actually understanding it is another story entirely.

As for his assessment... Firo would be mostly right about not doing too well with pranks. Rey frowns. "Not often, if ever. Wasn't included in a whole lot of things, but that was probably for the best."

It's not like she has the amiable personality for practical jokes. Not back then, anyway.

"That's a surprise. It seems like it'd be your thing."

He rises to bring the pot over, scooping more into her bowl without even asking if she wants it filled.
circumitus: I ONLY KNOW HOLA. (EVERYONE IS SPEAKING SPANISH)

"Not really, no."

She then pauses, casting a side glance to the wall as she considers his remark for a moment.

"...You probably weren't being serious again, were you?"

"You're gettin' better. Couple more months of this, and maybe you can go back to your army and joke with the best of 'em."

His guest properly re-fed--at least for now--he takes his seat again across from her, still grinning with amusement. Hey, he's hilarious. If other people don't appreciate it, that's their problem.
circumitus: There's my chippy! (where's my chippy?)

Har dee har.

Rey doesn't laugh, as one can expect. She just reaches for her bowl of refilled soup and pulls it in font of her, frowning.

"Well, not really. Am not doing any of that stuff anymore these days." A lot of things have changed. Rey herself has changed.

He still has quite a lot of work to do on her, it seems.

He takes a few spoonfuls of his own. "New job?"

Sadly, Rey is a piece of work herself.

"You could say that." She waves a hand before she reaches for her bowl again. Utensils be damned. "Was never actually part of that government in the first place. Not in the way you think. It's a long story."

Which seems to be the sort of thing you'd say to people when things are complicated.

Firo's got time for a long story. "So you were more like a mercenary?"

That would be a little better. Whatever job she had back home ultimately isn't important to him--it won't make or break how he feels about her--but that just seems like the kind of person that's more familiar to him.
circumitus: (your girlfriend is a south jersey whore.)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-05-09 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Picking up her bowl, Rey pauses as she considers Firo's question.

"Sure. Like a mercenary." In a way, she sort of was, so while it's no truth it's also no lie, either. It's just not the same type of 'mercenary' that Firo probably has in mind.

With that said, she goes for another crude round of drinking her soup. The manners this woman has are equal to that of a goddamned caveman.

Fortunately the horrid display is brief, and before Rey even sets her bowl back down she glances to Firo over the brim.

"So, what about you? What'd you do?" She figures they've discussed her long enough.

At least now Firo's prepared for it. He gives a breathy little laugh and looks away.

There's no point in being subtle about it or keeping it a secret, he supposes. Nobody can arrest him here. "I run a casino back home--my Family's joint." Credit where credit is due; though the Martillos aren't present to hear and be offended (if they even would be in the first place), respect dictates he say where the true ownership lies.

Rey's knowledge in American history is a little rusty, so it doesn't occur to her yet that what Firo describes is considered very illegal during his time. It sounds legit to her, in fact.

"You actually run it?" Rather than doubt, she sounds vaguely impressed. Firo seems so young, and running a business is no cakewalk. "Take it this means you're pretty good at playing cards, huh?"

[personal profile] foundafamily 2016-05-11 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
The tone helps a lot, even if the words themselves already have him tensed and perking his ears for sarcasm. He doesn't detect any, but that doesn't mean anything. He watches her warily as he continues talking. "Yeah, I've run it for the last four years."

At her last question, though, there's the hint of a mischievous grin. "Why should I spill that up front?" It's already too late to hustle her--not that he's inclined to here--but he has to keep up the game of not spilling his secrets.

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-05-11 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Four years? Didn't think anyone would let someone that young run a business."

What, did the mafia leave twelve-year-olds in charge of casinos back in the day or something? Admittedly, Rey doesn't know how to estimate Firo's age, other than to just assume.

She sets down her bowl and scoffs. "Well, was going to ask if you'd be up for a game or two someday -- you know, to pass the time, since it isn't like there are much better things to do here. But if you're just going to be dodgy about it..."

See what she did there, Firo?
foundafamily: (Default)

Rey, no

[personal profile] foundafamily 2016-05-12 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
There are few things Firo'd like better than a card game right now, but her remarks on his age are ringing too loudly in his ears for him to let them slide.

He frowns, leaning forward and resting one fist on the table. "Yeah, four years. And it's done just fine with me runnin' things, thanks."

What could that have been but an insult? It's true that--possible misconceptions about his age aside--he was their youngest capo ever. So normally someone with such a job at his age wouldn't happen. But Firo's not necessarily thinking of such things.

Making light or dismissing his remarks don't even occur to Rey at Firo's rather sharp reply. Judging by his reaction, it sounds as though he gets this often. Often enough to jump to his own conclusions about her intent, that is.

"You misunderstand. Am not saying you're incompetent or incapable. If you were, doubt that it would've been standing for four hours, let alone four years."

Rey can discern a success and a failure when she sees one. Firo is definitely not a failure, his youth aside.

"Besides," she adds, "know someone back home who accomplished at lot when he was really young, too. Am hardly one to undermine his abilities, or yours."

/thumbs up

[personal profile] foundafamily 2016-05-14 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Firo blinks at the words, having expected another punch to be thrown. But apparently none have been thrown at all.

Now he flushes just a little, unused to getting the compliment side of things. “W-well, I worked there a long time before I took over. You learn some things.”

Those 5 years gave him time to pick up on the business--with gambling, at least, he's a very quick study.

"...Anyway, if you're still up for it, I'd like a game."
circumitus: I CAN QUIT ANY FUCKING TIME I WANT. (i'm not drunk YOU'RE drunk)

sticks and stones, firo. sticks and stones...

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-05-15 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
What's that, Firo? Don't know how to handle compliments?

"Honestly, think it says a lot about how people think of you."

She isn't trying to butter him up or anything. Even having only just met, Rey doesn't give an air that she's that sort of person. Her sentiments, while impulsive, come from sincerity.

"Would like that as well. Could use the distraction in this place."
foundafamily: (3.3)

...are not as scary as words?

[personal profile] foundafamily 2016-05-15 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
And now that blushing is hardly just a little. He doesn't want to spill that the consensus back home--at least, among non-Martillos--is hardly so favorable.

He stares down at his bowl. "I--Well--Come on, don't try and flatter me. It's not gonna make me let you win, you know."

Right. Be competitive, play it off. That's the best way to go.
circumitus: There's my chippy! (where's my chippy?)

too true

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-05-15 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
She sees that blushing, no matter if Firo tries to hide it. Rey finds herself almost amused.

"Flattery implies a level of insincerity. Am being quite sincere." As if there is any other mode that Rey could possibly be. "Don't need to coax you into losing by showering you with empty praise, either."
foundafamily: (Default)

[personal profile] foundafamily 2016-05-16 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Firo'd hoped that the topic would be dropped completely with the start of the trash-talk, but alas. He supposes it is kind of nice, in a way, even if he doesn't really know what to do with it. "...Thanks."

Once again, it's easier to try to move right on to the other stuff. He even manages a bit of a grin now. "We'll see about that."
circumitus: - XOXO dad (time to smoke my breakfast)

[personal profile] circumitus 2016-05-16 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, Firo. No trash-talking allowed.

...

But Rey can take a hint when a change in subject is warranted. She just bites her tongue and obliges, not wanting to step all over Firo's comfort zone.

"Yes, we will," she presumes, the corner of her mouth tugging a little. "May not have run a casino, but learned a thing or two from one of the best professional gamblers."
