It's early in the morning when you feel the telltale thud of hitting hard-packed earth. Whether you're used to the feeling or not, you'll probably have a bruise or two from hitting the ground, which is another way to say Welcome to Hadriel!
In our beautiful city of Hadriel, you can find many treasures and wonders, like the creepy cat clocks, or the baby face cuckoo clocks, or some dali clocks, or... well, they're all clocks, and lucky for you, they all have different times set on their hands!
Be careful not to spend too much time lingering around with the timepieces, as there are monsters afoot! You should be careful or you'll be overrun by war crabs! These mollusk-like creatures are several feet in diameter and a few hundred pounds, so be careful when dealing with them! They're also capable of utilizing their steam-powered machinery to launch rusty grenades and musket bullets at you- don't think that close range is a good idea either, as their sharp pincers can amputate entire limbs, and they're quicker than they seem.
You might want to get out of this place as soon as possible- maybe one of the other folks around you can lend a hand? Sure, they might be just as confused as you, but there's strength in numbers, after all!
After you've find your way out of the colosseum there's plenty of other distractions. Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers August 10th-16th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
colosseum;
She's been staking out the colosseum all morning, following the request for help that Marian had sent out earlier. A request to assist with monster slaying during the newest wave of arrivals. By the point that she meets up with Lucretia, Lup's already burned a whole handful of spell slots, her hair is falling out of what had earlier been a high ponytail on her head, and she's a little worse for wear, the sleeve of her top singed off completely.
This is a whole different experience than the previous month. Wasps, as quick as those little assholes had been, had been pretty easily evaporated with a well placed fireball, whole swarms of them gone with a single spell. But these things? These robo-crabs from hell? Yeah, they can sure take a punch and give it right back. And gods, are there even more of them than there had been before?
Lup's patience is waning. Which is precisely why there's a plastic cat with a clock face that's hurled at the crab nearest to the other woman, the clock bouncing off of it's tough shell almost uselessly, though at least it manages cause the distraction she'd been after. The elf has already grabbed another clock, something heavier this time, and is raising it when her eyes flicker away from the crab. The familiar, almost soothing light of magic circle catches her attention. And then she meets eyes with Lucretia.
And promptly drops the heavy clock she's been straining to raise up onto her foot.]
no subject
there's Lup. Oh, Lucretia thinks, thank goodness. She's staggering to pick up a clock off the ground and she looks a little worse for wear, like she's been fighting hard. This isn't an unfamiliar sight to Lucretia, who is used to seeing Lup in the middle of battle, singed (always), a little tired from burning spell slots. Hopefully she's still got juice in the tank: these crabs don't appear to be easing up any time soon.
Lup looks up and sees her looking, and promptly drops the clock she had been holding on her foot. Lucretia winces, and quickly casts mage hand to lift it up as she comes hurrying over, abandoning her magic circle for a moment so she can help.)
Hey– are you okay? Gods, it's good to see you. Where are the others? How did we–
(Another explosion nearby has her grabbing Lup's hand automatically to tug her back towards the magic circle. Questions can wait until they're under a bit of cover.)
no subject
And then it's just the two of them.
She should be mad. She should be furious. Weeks later, the memory of Taako's breakdown is still so fresh in her mind and Lup is fully aware the woman standing in front of her was the force behind it. Lup's plan may have left scars on the new world they'd landed on, but Lucretia's had left scars on their family. Especially on Taako. And honestly, while she'd been venting her rage against foreign monsters in the caves just ten days earlier, Lup couldn't deny imagining herself flat out decking Lucretia in their place.
But faced with the woman she considered her best friend, Lup falters for just a moment, her hesitation so out-of-character to how she'd normally act, before she's throwing her arms around Lucretia and hugging her. And she doesn't let go.] Holy shit, Luce. I can't believe you're here. Just--...Fuck.
[It's a blessing and a curse. Lup would never want to throw any of their friends into such a volatile place like Hadriel, but she can't deny the comfort she feels having more of them there. It meant greater chances of victory in the end, right? What shitty gods could stand up against their bomb-ass crew?
The combat is still raging outside of their safety bubble, Lup only releasing Lucretia when she's good and ready, and even then, her hands wind up on the other woman's shoulders. Her mind is reeling, it's hard to focus on what she's been asked.] It's, uh, gods, I don't even know where to start. Barry and Davenport are the only ones unaccounted for. Everyone else has been here for a few months.
no subject
Lucretia loops her arms around her friend and hugs her back just as tight, and it's amazing how the simple touch can soothe her anxiety away. She isn't here alone. This isn't another cycle sixty-five. And it doesn't fucking matter that just a few nights ago Lup had been arguing against her about what to do regarding the light of creation because they're still a team. Her cynical thoughts don't have a foothold here, not now. She's thankful for it.
When they break apart, Lucretia is smiling, but her expression quickly twists into confusion as Lup explains.)
What do you mean, you've been here for a few months? (Didn't she only just get here? Has she been somewhere else before now, somewhere she hasn't been able to remember? Are they at the start of a new cycle or something?)
Did I die?
no subject
[Lup's lips press into a thin, thoughtful line as her head tips to the side. How the hell had Taako managed to explain anything to her with such a short amount of time to prep. Putting all of the information into something quick and digestible suddenly seems impossible.]
It's a long story. [a beat] A really long story. Want to bust out of this place before I bust out the deets of it all? The--[A hand drops off of Lucretia's shoulder to wave vaguely in the beast's direction.] --Crab-things won't go past the colosseum walls. Once we get into the city, we'll be good. [Safe.]
no subject
Yeah, sure– (she lets her hand drop, wary gaze on the crab again. It hasn't tried to breach her circle yet. It's just staring at them through the translucent magic, watching them, waiting. It might not be able to get into the circle, but it still has those grenades and Lucretia doesn't like the idea of getting hit by one of those at this close a range even a little bit.) I'm going to dissolve the circle, and we can get some distance on it.
(She drops her hand briefly onto Lup's shoulder, casting stoneskin to give her the extra advantage. She needs to concentrate to keep this one up though, so she probably won't be able to join in for the rest of the fight. But that's cool. Buffing is kind of her thing.)
I'll stick behind you if we need to run.
(Aaand circle's gone.)
no subject
The hands on Lucretia's shoulders drop after the spell is cast, Lup opening and closing her fists at the familiar tingle that runs through her. Oh yeah, she's got this.]
Stay close, [Lucretia doesn't need the reminder, but Lup's determined to not leave her behind.
And the circle drops.
The best choice for two squishy spellcasters in an arena full of mega, mechanized, mollusk-like monsters would absolutely be to make a run for the exit. But even as two of the crabs catch sight of the pair, scuttling around on eight legs to face them, Lup's hands are already cackling with dangerous energy. She may not be able to take them all out with her limited spell slots remaining, but gods, she wants to at least fuck up one more. Lup tips her head back at Lucretia and grins.]
Wanna do the witty call out before I fry 'em up?
no subject
(Lucretia is pretty good at multitasking, but right now she only has enough concentration for two things: maintaining stoneskin, and keeping an eye on the rest of the playing field. No room left for coming up with witty one liners unfortunately, but she's more than sure that Lup will be able to invent something in her stead.
She isn't scared. They've been in much worse situations before, and Lucretia still has a fifth level spell slot left that she isn't afraid to burn. Lup might notice she's got an easy confidence about her that's quite different from how she had approached fighting during the first half of their time on the Starblaster. She's a lot older now, and done with being afraid. Honestly, there hasn't been any time to be afraid, especially not during any recent cycles.
Seeing flames leaping in Lup's hands is reassuring. They'll kick these crab's butts and then beat a hasty retreat. Lucretia glances over her shoulder; there's a little cluster of them advancing in their direction from behind. Not close enough to worry about just yet, but if one of them were to open fire...)
Five at six o'clock, Lup! Wrap it up.
no subject
But then Lucretia tells her to 'wrap it up' and Lup can't help but scoff, eyes rolling. What's the point of fighting at all if you can't make it at least a little fun? It's so much better as a game.] Put a little more faith in me, Luce. I'm not going to-- [Naturally, even if the world should revolve around Lup, it doesn't. The crab nearest to them skitters closer and lobs a grenade over their heads, just barely managing to miss them. Though the blast is still close enough to kicks up dirt and leave their ears ringing.]
Okay! [Lup yells with a visible wince, the noise particularly nasty with her sensitive ears.] Fair point! [Without wasting another moment, the fire in Lup's hands crackles before she's throwing a powered up fireball towards the nearest crab. It connects with enough power to knock the crab off balance, but only momentarily, the beast tipped precariously on it's side while three of it's spindly legs flail wildly in the air. Now would be the perfect time to finish it with a well timed lightning bolt--but the crabs behind the pair are already aiming their grenades forward at them. Okay, it's time to go.
With her hands no longer wreathed in flame, Lup reaches behind her and grabs for Lucretia's hand before sprinting forward, dragging the other woman along with her. At least the crab right in the direct path of the exit is preoccupied with getting back on it's feet. It gives the two enough time to make a mad dash around it.]
no subject
Lup– (she says warningly; the crab flings a grenade sideways at them and Lucretia puts her palm on Lup's back as she ducks behind her, half to help her concentration on the spell and half to keep Lup from tripping over her if she backs up suddenly. That, and hey: if she's going to turn Lup's skin as hard as stone, she may as well use her as a meat shield for this fight. Thankfully, most of the scope of the blast seems to have missed them. Lucretia blinks, giving her head a little shake to try and clear the muted ringing in her ears. Lup has finally thrown a spell, and Lucretia leans back to watch with satisfaction as the crab is flipped.)
Can we go now? (She says, glancing over her shoulder again. The crabs are closing ranks on them, and the sound of their metal legs skittering over the rock and sand combined with the incessant clock ticking is driving her crazy.
Lup grabs her hand in response and gives her a tug; Lucretia does a little hop over half of the fallen crab as it scrambles to get at her and then they're both running flat out for the edge of the colosseum. When they hit the exit, Lucretia doesn't stop running immediately, but lets her momentum carry her far away from the perimeter just in case, checking obsessively over her shoulder. Stoneskin fades, leaving Lup as she was before.)
Okay, (she pants, and gives Lup a little grin,) That went well. Like, it wasn't exactly a win, but that went fine.
no subject
When they finally come to a pause, Lup squeezes Lucretia's hand before letting it go, needing a second to catch her breath. Elves may not need sleep, but she's gonna need one help of a nap after this.]
Shit, I know it's not my usual combat standard but I'll fucking take it. [And Lup takes one brief moment to look at her friend again before she goes in for a second hug, this one much quicker and much more upbeat feeling now that the giant crabs aren't bearing down on them. When she's exceeded her limit for physical affection, Lup steps away and smiles, pointing a finger up, up, up to the rock ceiling above them.] So, this isn't the best news I've ever gotten to give someone, but welcome to Hadriel. It's basically a pocket dimension that doubles as a giant, awful cave prison.
no subject
Hadriel, (she repeats slowly, letting each syllable roll off her tongue. It's a very reasonable name for a city, and therefore easy to assume that Lup herself hadn't named it.) I've... never heard of it. It sounds lovely.
(She's being a little sarcastic, now, as she takes the time to brush off her robes and tug everything back into place that had been knocked askew by the fight.) I'm sure the grand tour is really something Lup, but I really need you to explain first, please. Have you really been here for months already? How did I get to this cycle late?
no subject
While Lucretia takes the time to fix up her own appearance, Lup doesn't bother, hands moving to rest at her hips while her hair is left half hanging down over her shoulders, clothes signed and the toes of her boots scuffed with dirt.]
Well, last question is the easiest. [Sort of.] We're not in a cycle this time. Like I said, this place is some sort of pocket dimension that brings people from all different worlds into it. And here's the real fun part, pretty much everyone I've spoken to has come from a different place on the timeline. Taako, Merle, and Mags, uh--[She drums her fingers against her hip and tips her head back and forth, trying to figure out how to delicately put this.] --They aren't from when we're from. [There's a minute pause, Lup's eyes focusing on Lucretia's youthful face.] Or at least where I'm from. Can't speak for you.
It sounds crazy, but they're all from my future.
no subject
(Wait, so... no light of creation, then. Lucretia dutifully pops one strap of her backpack off her shoulder, swinging it around to her front so she can rummage in it for journal and pen. Thank goodness she always carries a blank one in here just in case. She opens it, and titles the blank page at the start: 𝓗𝓪𝓭𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓵, and then automatically writes 𝒸𝓎𝒸𝓁𝑒: underneath and has to go back to cross it out. She taps her pen on the page, stumped for a moment.)
An anomaly, (she mumbles to herself, and writes that underneath her heading instead. She flips the page over.)
We're from– different times? (That gives her pause, enough to give Lup a confused squint, pen hovering over the fresh page.) Like, from future cycles you mean? (She snorts, and writes that down at the top of the page, circling it twice. They're already on their eighty-second cycle, how many more could there possibly be?)
Hopefully not too far ahead. I was kind of banking on being able to wrap everything up before we hit one hundred at bare minimum.
no subject
Something like that. Only the boys are out of the loops altogether. No more cycles. They've been on whatever plane we end up inhabiting for, uh--[shit, she doesn't really know all of the timeline details. So it's her best guess.] --ten years or so? [It's not as exact as Lucretia may have hoped for, but it's one of the more significant numbers to Lup, so it's what she's remembered. Ten years her brother went without her.]
So, like I said, we got some fucked up timeline shenanigans going on. I've gotten the whole rundown from Taako, but--[she shrugs] I'm still from their past. [And Magnus doesn't even know who she is, but that's not getting touched on unless she absolutely has to bring it up.]
no subject
They... defeated the Hunger? (She doesn't like that she sounds so solaced, but it's been getting pretty hard to hope lately. The scouts have been finding them sooner and sooner in every cycle and the relentless hounding is terrifying, anxiety-inducing; that, and the mind-numbing cycles that start out with fruitless searching and go out the same way (the ones that Lucretia marks on a wall back in her quarters with a thick piece of charcoal, a grim tally of the planes they failed to save) weighing heavily upon her.
She hadn't been the first one to start to wonder if it was ever going to amount to anything. The relief is overwhelming.)
When? (She ignores the rest of Lup's explanation, unable to help latching onto this, exploring it.) How many cycles did they complete? I'm on my eighty-second– when do they defeat the Hunger?
no subject
Lucretia would know fairly quickly that things aren't as positive as they seemed by the less than enthused look to cross Lup's face, her mouth pressing into a thin, unreadable line.]
They haven't. It's...[she can't help but sigh, even if she knows it makes things come across even worse than she means it to.] They just haven't yet.
[Lup's arms drop from where they're perched at her hips, the elf quickly glancing around at the people milling about from their own excursions in the colosseum. Some are gleefully reuniting with friends or family, some are just wandering alone, not sure what their next step is. Even if they are all trapped in their own little worlds, Lup can't stand the thought of crushing Lucretia's hope out here in front of strangers. She's family, after all, and deserves the right to have this chat somewhere a little more private.]
Hey, walk with me. [Lup catches Lucretia's elbow and gently guides her forward, past the apartment spires and towards a few of the abandoned shops just across the path. Most of the shops here are unmanned, so it will be as good as any place to barge into and chat. When they arrive, Lup kicking the door shut behind them, she wastes no more time in dropping down the deets.] So, do you know about the relics, then? Taako told me about them, he didn't say when we made 'em, but he told me what happened after. We dropped in on a new plane, threw them out into the world, and the fucking Hunger just disappeared like that. [she snaps her fingers, carefully watching Lucretia's face] It couldn't find us. It still like, exists, but my guess is we're starving it out. Taako said the last ten years you all have been safe.
no subject
Oh. (She says, distantly. Now that she's giving herself time to logically think about it, of course they couldn't have defeated the Hunger yet. Pulling out something that vicious, that entangled in the planar system would surely cause a ripple effect that would be noticeable even from their current point in time. She's snapping her book shut on autopilot, carefully stowing it back into her bag with her pen when Lup takes her elbow and gently tugs her away from the colosseum. She follows, lost in thought.
How foolish of her to think that there could ever be an out so easy? That brief hope and happiness that had flared in her had been like a flame; now, she only feels burnt. She hasn't been paying attention to where they're going at all, so when Lup takes her into a little building and shuts the door behind she blinks, reaching up to give one of her eyes a knuckle underneath of her glasses.)
The... relics? (She hasn't heard them referred to like that before, but she can certainly make the connection between them and Lup's plan for breaking the lights into various artefacts. So they did go along with that after all. Her expression twists into something helpless, brow furrowed.)
Ten years, (she echoes. She can't look at Lup. She stares across the shop instead, at a dusty broken window pane to the right, and the broken shards of glass littering the floor below. She pinches the bridge of her nose, closing her eyes.) Okay. I mean– this wasn't my first choice and you know that but... what's done is done.
no subject
But being told those things instead of experiencing them herself makes it so much more difficult to put together. Having Lucretia, one that is nearly four decades older, standing in front of her throws Lup so far off-balance. She's not sure how much she should say, how much she'll actually be able to push herself into admitting. Lup had to fight Taako just to squeeze this information out of him. She can't possibly put Lucretia through that too.
Gods, at the very least, she should probably warn her about Taako.]
So, just to like, put it out there, I'm not from cycle eighty-two. I popped into Hadriel right as we were headed towards cycle forty-eight. [Not nearly as small a difference as Lup had initially thought.]
no subject
You're from cycle forty-seven?
(That seems like so long ago. Lucretia tries to think about what even was going on at that time in the mission, if there was anything notable but for her the cycles have separated neatly into two categories: before cycle sixty-five, and after. Everything before feels very different. Lucretia mostly remembers those cycles to be filled with inane exploration, of staying back with the ship and reading books in large armchairs, helping out where she could and constantly wondering if it was enough.
She's changed, since then. Right? Surely she has.)
Wow. Alright. (It's strange, feeling like she has a one-up on Lup information wise.) So let me get this straight: Taako's been feeding you information from the future. He, Magnus and Merle are all from a time that is past the cycles– you and I aren't. Is it... safe for you to know these things so far in advance?
no subject
With a huff, Lup shifts to perch on one of the less crowded shop counters, long legs swinging aimlessly beneath her. Taako had basically asked her the same thing, though he'd said it in an effort to not open up to her, not out of fear of the future.] I had to know what was going on. It's-- [she raises a hand and waves it vaguely, as if that's any actual explanation at all] It's complicated. Taako and I have to be on the same page. He's my brother. Besides, that just means that if shit goes wrong in the future, I can help fix it proper in my timeline, right? Why wouldn't they want me to fix the mistakes we made the first time around?
no subject
Did they save forty-seven? Or was it consumed by the Hunger? She can't remember.)
That's fair. (She says, simply, and means it too. She knows how tight Lup and Taako are, and it must be so frustrating for her to be this far behind him. It might not be advisable for Lup to know these things just yet, she isn't about to try and stop Taako from telling her anything. Knowing Taako and his inclination to run his mouth, she doesn't doubt that Lup is completely up to date, but she still asks the question anyway.)
How much do you know? (The realisation hits her so suddenly her eyes go wide with shock: Lup isn't a lich yet. Why wouldn't they want me to fix the mistakes we made the first time around? The moment the thought occurs to her Lucretia feels deeply ashamed of herself for having even considered it: it's not her decision to make or to try and keep Lup from making. The idea of trying to use her extra time on Lup as a vantage point makes her feel a bit sick. She presses her lips tightly together, and sighs.)
no subject
Enough, [No matter what cycle, the elf takes far too much delight in being vague. Besides, this is all going on the assumption that Taako told her as much as was necessary. She trusts that he didn't leave anything truly important out, but ten years was too long a period to cover completely in one afternoon. There were bound to be a few gaps.
But before Lup can follow through to give Lucretia an actual answer, she notices the other woman's strange reaction. Lup hops off of the counter almost immediately, head tipping curiously to the side.] Lucretia? What's up?
no subject
It's unimportant. (She says eventually: understatement of the century. Or at least, in her case it is? Nobody else on the ship seems to have cared all that much, not that Lucretia has tried to talk to anybody about it. She has a sneaking suspicion that Taako may not be entirely on board with his twin sister being a lich, but... well, what's the point in discussing it, even if he isn't? What's done is done. Lucretia has silently watched the gleeful way Lup has taken to her newfound power and held her tongue the whole time and she will continue to do so.)
Where are the others? Are you all staying together here on... on the ship, or something?
no subject
Neither Lucretia nor Taako would be completely pleased to hear that even after her brother's warnings of the future, Lup still doesn't see anything wrong with her giving up her mortal life to become a lich. In fact, since he brought it up, it's been a difficult thought to shake from her mind. What if amping her powers as a lich was all it took to destroy the gods who ran this place? If the Null believed mere weapons could hurt them, a lich could probably devastate them...]
Doubt it. [Because Lup sucks at leaving things along without having her own last say on the matter, but she strides forward to the window, heeled boots crunching on broken glass to gesture out the shop window at Spire Four, which is only just across the way.] No sign of the Starblaster in this place yet. We've taken over an apartment over there. It's kind of cramped, three bedrooms for the four of us, and I'm guessing rooming with Merle or Magnus isn't exactly your top choice, but they have some smaller rooms upstairs. Wanna check it out? Maybe we could nab one a floor or two above us.
[And things feel weird between them and Lup doesn't know how the hell Taako is going to take Lucretia's sudden appearance, but she smiles.] I could help you pick up some things around town. Make it more homey. The places come with all the basic shit you need, but you'll need some clothes and all that. Oh! I know where to get you some paints too!
