Event Log: Bad End

Warnings: Bad futures, awkward conversations, smashed mirrors

You wake up to find a mirror at your bedside - a pretty nice one, too, a silver hand mirror perfect for fixing your hair in. Only when you try to do that, it's not your gorgeous reflection that you see. It's something else - a terrible future, just about as bad as anything you could imagine for yourself.

Maybe you see your loved ones dead on the ground, and you know it's your fault. Maybe you see the goal you've been working so hard for pulled out of your reach forever. Maybe you see someone you've hurt in the past ruining your life. Maybe you see your hot girlfriend leaving you to shack up with your worst enemy. Whatever you see, it really sucks, and you know that it's possible. This future could happen if you make the wrong choices, give in to your worst impulses.

Break the mirror if you want, but you'll see the same vision in any reflective surface in the city. You can't break them all, but you can sure try. And what will you do when you see your best friend's vision - and it features you betraying them?

Seek reassurance, give reassurance, lash out, vow to yourself that you'll never let it turn out that way, sink into the depths of sorrow because you feel like the future you see is inevitable. Whatever you do, it won't take away those visions - not until the event is over.

Not normal at all. [Michael shakes his head.] Like, there are lots of stupid monster stories, but people tell them knowing they're not really real. It's just a way to freak each other out.

But then this one... Well, it is real. So who knows anymore?

[evocation]

Maybe it's just like... In those movies, you know? Where no one knows it exists or something.

[Which is wild for her to think about, but.]

Yeah, probably.

[They're thinking of different movies but, sure. It's actually pretty crazy for him to think about a world where no one would even question the veracity of his story.]

But to be honest, if the murder-demon is real, I don't know if I want to know what else is out there. The serial killer thing is bad enough.

[evocation]

[Her eyebrows go right up.]

Wait, what serial killer thing?

[aroundthecoroner]

[Oh, right. Oops. He rubs the bridge of his nose for a second. He's gonna have to walk a bit of a line, here.]

Earlier I said the thing's interested in murderers. Not just people who have killed, like, in self-defense or whatever, but people who do it on purpose. Back home, there was an active serial killer. Is, I guess. Maybe. He might be dead, but somebody just got killed again, so he might not be.

[And now he's getting off track- off track in a way that could be dangerous.]

Anyway. The Visitor wants me to find him. But now we're here, and he's not, so it's pissed. It's... I think it's trying to pick a new target. So it's, like, suspicious of anyone it thinks might have killed people? It was after your friend earlier when I saw his mirror, but I think it's fine now-

[Wait. Shit. He did so well not telling her he killed people, but then he had to go and fuck something else up. Fantastic.]

[evocation]

[That's so much. So much. Kyna stares at him for a long second, utterly shocked.]

What? Wait, a new target? What friend are you even talking about? Harlan?

[aroundthecoroner]

[Nope, nope, he shouldn't have said anything. So now it's time to maybe stop word-vomiting.]

Nothing. I didn't mean- [Wait.] It was because he said something about your job. Like, you had to kill people for your job.

[evocation]

Bullshit. You said you saw his mirror.

[Which... What the fuck?]

Did he show it to you?

[Hhhhhhhhh-]

No, I just- Forget I said anything. It's not important.

[Please trust him he's being so trustworthy.]

[evocation]

Yes, it is. Why are you lying? He showed you, didn't he?

[aroundthecoroner]

I'm not lying, I just can't- I already fucked up, okay?

[evocation]

Fucked up what? What did you see? Why would that ghost even care about Harlan?

[aroundthecoroner]

I told you it's nothing.

[His words are very careful, his tone distinctly lower. He stands up, pacing now.]

It doesn't care about him. I wasn't supposed to say anything.

[evocation]

Yeah, well, you did, so tell me what the hell you're talking about.

[aroundthecoroner]

[Michael stops and squints at her, incredulous.]

No. You figure it out.

[evocation]

Are you fucking kidding? You're the one who screwed up, and now you get to deal with it. Tell me.

[aroundthecoroner]

What? By fucking up even more? I don't think so.

[evocation]

Fine, whatever.

[She stands up suddenly, moving to push past him.]

I'll ask him myself.

[aroundthecoroner]

[He doesn't say anything, he just gets out of her way and lets her go.
