Event Log: Bad End

Who: All characters participating in the event
What: The event log for the Bad End event
Where: All over the city!
When: August 23rd-September 5th
Warnings: Bad futures, awkward conversations, smashed mirrors

You wake up to find a mirror at your bedside - a pretty nice one, too, a silver hand mirror perfect for fixing your hair in. Only when you try to do that, it's not your gorgeous reflection that you see. It's something else - a terrible future, just about as bad as anything you could imagine for yourself.

Maybe you see your loved ones dead on the ground, and you know it's your fault. Maybe you see the goal you've been working so hard for pulled out of your reach forever. Maybe you see someone you've hurt in the past ruining your life. Maybe you see your hot girlfriend leaving you to shack up with your worst enemy. Whatever you see, it really sucks, and you know that it's possible. This future could happen if you make the wrong choices, give in to your worst impulses.

Break the mirror if you want, but you'll see the same vision in any reflective surface in the city. You can't break them all, but you can sure try. And what will you do when you see your best friend's vision - and it features you betraying them?

Seek reassurance, give reassurance, lash out, vow to yourself that you'll never let it turn out that way, sink into the depths of sorrow because you feel like the future you see is inevitable. Whatever you do, it won't take away those visions - not until the event is over.

► This log covers August 23rd-September 5th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you can't handle the idea of your dark future, or maybe you just accidentally slip and fall on a mirror shard, let us know here.

"Ah." Maglor's eyes clear as he looks at him.

"The visions." He sighs. "Oh. These?" He blinks. "I...it helps me focus. The injuries aren't serious."

But they are self-inflicted. New scratch marks over old burn scars.

Ignis looks troubled, but while he thinks highly of the elf he isn't sure if they could yet be called friends, and as such uncertain of whether or not he ought to be dispensing advice.

"I see," he says after a moment of considered silence. "Would you consider companionship a viable alternative?"

Maglor smiles faintly at the look on his face.

"I know. It's not... the best sort of behaviour, is it? Not... terribly healthy. But it works, so... "

He nods. "If you don't mind, I would not object. Talking ... it helps cement this world's reality, such as it is."

At least he can admit that it isn't healthy. Ignis carefully schools what might have become a grimace into a polite smile, and gestures to the path ahead. It would be good for the both of them, he thinks.

"I certainly wouldn't make the offer, if I minded."

He's been offering the same to most of the people he's come across. Most of them have taken him up on it.

Maglor nods and starts to meander slowly in that direction.

"It seems we are all similarly plagued. Do you well?"

Ignis gives a small nod, though it's followed up almost immediately by an emphatic - and no doubt more honest - shake of his head. There's very little use in being untruthful here.

"Despite having knowledge that the things I see will not in fact come to pass, I have been.. unsettled by them regardless."

And part of it is in knowing that it isn't too far from the truth.

Maglor hums, thoughtfully.

"You as well then. My brothers... see the past. As does my nephew. But I... perhaps, because there is nothing in my past that I do not already relieve, I, like you, see might-have-beens. Things close enough that they might have happened, but for, as they say, 'chance'. I suppose everyone is the same."

"I imagine you have a long past," he says, after a few moments of thought. The elves are older than they look, he knows that by now, and they have a length of years behind them that a person like Ignis can't even imagine.

"... And a long future, as well?"

"That is true." Maglor nods. "Even for one of my folk, I am accounted quite old, these days, although I am hardly amongst the oldest! As for a future..."

He shrugs. "We are tied to our world, to live as it lives, and die as it dies. So I have until then, although who knows when that will be."
