It's that time again! Or, well, probably the very first time for you. It's not that often that you turn up in a different world - unless it is. You awaken on the ground of a large arena, a stone ceiling stretching high above you. Welcome to Hadriel! Don't worry, you weren't the only one who woke up here. So did a bunch of other people - and so did some monsters.
Yup, crawling around being incredibly gross are quite a few Jauchekafers, large beetles that feed off chemical and biological waste from humans. When upset or alarmed, they're perfectly happy to swarm and attack people, so hopefully you didn't wake up in the middle of them. Being about two and a half feet long, their bites can do quite a bit of damage, and that's not even counting the toxicity that might be passed on from their diet!
Speaking of their diet, those beetles aren't the only trash that's washed up in Hadriel this month. While making your escape from the arena, you might stumble over a interesting table or a possibly comfy chair, or even a piece of art. A lot of it's pretty cool, but you're not gonna find anything that isn't made out of trash. But hey, maybe that's your aesthetic?
Don't get too distracted by all this trash that has been turned into treasure. After you've find your way out of the colosseum there's plenty of other distractions! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers September 10th-14th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[He looks around the armory. He'd been pretty focused on swords himself, but there really is a wide variety. Just not a lot of great choices for untrained folks.]
An axe might be a good place to start. Have you ever chopped wood? It's the same, only far bloodier.
no subject
[Michael follows Rhy's gaze and studies the axes. There's a joke in here somewhere. Axe murderer, maybe.]
The only thing I've ever chopped is vegetables. But I do get the general idea? It's like, a momentum thing.
no subject
[He sounds unashamed by his ignorance. The one thing he definitely understands out of all of this is that not only is he in another world, but the people here are all from different worlds as well - so of course they would have things he's never heard of, like baseball and smartphones. There's no shame in not knowing things.]
But if it's boring, maybe that's for the best?
[Rhy grins.]
Yes, axes are pretty straightforward, all things considered. And you can practice on trees if you're not certain you'll be able to do it.
no subject
[People get way too into it for something that just takes up hours of your time with no real payout. But then, maybe Rhy would like sports? Whatever, he's better off this way.
Michael tentatively hefts an axe off the rack, testing its weight. It's somehow both more and less than he thought it would be.]
I... think I can handle this? I don't know if I should kill all the trees in the park, but yeah, practicing with this should be easier than like, swords.
So, uh, thanks. Is there... something you need help with? [Only seems fair.]

[Since he barely has any idea where to get started. Rhy pulls out his phone, holding it as if he isn't quite certain how it's supposed to be held - because, well, he isn't.]
This. We don't have them where I'm from, and I haven't the first idea how to use it. I saw others using theirs, though. If you could only show me how to start using it, I'm sure I could figure out the rest from there.
[He's not really sure of any such thing, but it would be a start. He could try, anyway.]
it's my convenient phone icon's time to shine
Oh, that, yeah. [He reaches for the phone, demonstrating how to hold it with the fingers at the edges.] We call these phones where I'm from. Smart phones, technically, though this one's a little different. It's like a... like a little computer? I don't know if you have computers, either. It's a really complex machine. Mostly we use them for communication.
[He turns it on.] The screen reacts to touch, and all these little symbols are the different functions.
yes good
[Which probably explains why this one is such a mystery to Rhy. He watches with avid interest, studying the way Michael holds it. If the screen reacts to touch, then it makes sense you'd use it like that.
Rhy is no genius, but he's intelligent enough. More importantly, he's charmed by the oddness of this item.]
My world has magic, and quite a bit of it, but it seems we're lacking when it comes to machines. What a clever device. You touch a symbol, and it... does something?
no subject
[If any. Though more and more he's becoming convinced that it's possible his world has just a secret multitude of supernatural things. It seems like every other world does.]
Yeah, that's it. It doesn't do anything crazy like, I don't know, transform or shoot lasers, everything is on the screen. But you can use it to talk to people even if they're far away.
[He gives it back.]
I can demonstrate, if you want? Or you can just play around with it.
no subject
[Honestly, he'd probably throw it in the lake. Communication device is fine, weapon of mass destruction that he doesn't know how to use less so.]
Communication over long distances is a difficulty, and this is a very clever solution. Would you mind demonstrating, though? I have to admit I wouldn't even have anyone here I could think of to contact.
[He's just too new.]
no subject
[He pulls his own phone out of his pocket, leaning the axe against his leg for a minute.]
Oh, wait. I need to know your name first.
no subject
[He bows. It would be a little ridiculous, if it wasn't clear that it's entirely natural for him - he bows in greeting to near-strangers on a not irregular basis.]
A pleasure to meet you.
no subject
I... have no idea where Arnes is, but, yeah. Yes. Pleasure to meet you, too.
[So royalty is a first. He thinks. He almost forgets he's supposed to be doing something with the name, but then he gets it.]
Uh, here.
[He moves through the contact list and finds Rhy's name, then calls it.]
no subject
[Which is not so very alarming, when he knows people who can travel between worlds at home.]
Oh!
[As Rhy's phone begins to ring, his eyes widen.]
Amazing. And to answer it...?
no subject
Here, you tap this. [Michael reaches over to demonstrate.]
It has audio or text, or you can do video. That, uh, means you can see the other person as well as hear them.
[Such as this particular tutorial call.]
no subject
[He looks at the screen without touching it, well aware that he has no idea what he's doing.]
This will take some practice, but I like it. Very useful - and the 'video' function seems like fun.
[If Rhy were from a modern world, he would def be a social media star tbh]
no subject
[He was actually alive and older than a teenager during the switch to smart phones, so he remembers the adjustment period.]
I think it records videos, too, even if you don't want to broadcast them.
no subject
[It makes showing up in a new world seem a little more manageable, having something small and relatively easy to focus on.]
Your world must be very technologically advanced.
no subject
[Michael picks the axe back up from where it's been leaning against his leg.]
It sounds like I've got nothing on some of the people here. And my world doesn't have magic, so, trade-off, I guess.
no subject
[It's not unheard of, but - well, it's sort of sad.]
I suppose you'd have to focus on science, then, to make up for the lack. Do all the things magic can do.
