It's that time again! Or, well, probably the very first time for you. It's not that often that you turn up in a different world - unless it is. You awaken on the ground of a large arena, a stone ceiling stretching high above you. Welcome to Hadriel! Don't worry, you weren't the only one who woke up here. So did a bunch of other people - and so did some monsters.

Yup, crawling around being incredibly gross are quite a few Jauchekafers, large beetles that feed off chemical and biological waste from humans. When upset or alarmed, they're perfectly happy to swarm and attack people, so hopefully you didn't wake up in the middle of them. Being about two and a half feet long, their bites can do quite a bit of damage, and that's not even counting the toxicity that might be passed on from their diet!

Speaking of their diet, those beetles aren't the only trash that's washed up in Hadriel this month. While making your escape from the arena, you might stumble over a interesting table or a possibly comfy chair, or even a piece of art. A lot of it's pretty cool, but you're not gonna find anything that isn't made out of trash. But hey, maybe that's your aesthetic?

Don't get too distracted by all this trash that has been turned into treasure. After you've find your way out of the colosseum there's plenty of other distractions! Feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

[A soldier's response. How curious.]

Were you in the military, sir?

[A shake of his head at the question.]

No. Don't think they'd take me... [He lifts a hand to tap at the dark glasses.] I lost my sight as a kid.

[And then, with something of a self-deprecating smile.] I'm afraid I'm just an attorney.

[How curious. Maketh watches him for a moment, wondering. He moves like a soldier. Most of the attorneys she knows are cool and distant, hard-edged. Not like this man. But she's been wrong before. What is true in her world isn't always so in another.] My mother was a soldier. Lost her sight in an accident.

[He's not at all like Maize.]

Attorneys are useful. It's important to know the laws. Though perhaps less so in this context.

I like to think we have our place in the greater good of things. But yeah... maybe not so much here.

[He's still trying to figure out the whole "here" thing. It's too strange to wrap his mind around easily.]

Though there is some law and order here, isn't there?

Hmm. A diplomatic answer.

[She respects that.]

We have the Guard, yes. A few of us with military or fighting experience who maintain a perimeter around the city. we keep the peace.

[A faint grin.] Think so?

[Matt is good at that though, at saying the right thing, even if he's busy asking a million questions in his mind. Lead a double life long enough and it starts to be second nature.]

Perimeter around the city, huh? That's to keep things out or to keep people in?

[Maketh tips her head to the side, watching him. Intelligent enough to know what questions to ask, and clever enough to know how to ask them.] To prevent the monsters from gaining a foothold. So long as people don't kill each other, the Guard does not care what they do.

Well, keeping the monsters out certainly sounds like a worthwhile service, especially since not everyone is able to defend themselves.

[He leaves it vague enough so that he may be referring to himself in that. He isn't, but that's something more complicated than he's planning on getting into, yet.]

Though, murder is a fairly low bar. Any problems with other crime?

No, not everyone can.

[She doesn't expect that, though it would make things easier. But people cooperate better when they aren't constantly afraid for their lives, she's found. A little fear is useful. Too much and there's chaos. And chaos cannot be allowed.]

Some assault, minor theft. A few individuals behaving foolishly. If they cannot sort it out themselves, we will sort it for them.

[Fear in general, as far as Matt is concerned, breeds trouble. People get desperate and defensive, and neither is a quality that lends itself to peace and calm.]

Sounds like a necessary service. Though I'm curious as to how the sorting goes. Doesn't appear to be any sort of criminal justice infrastructure here.

[Courts. Prisons. Are there even any codified laws. ...you can take the lawyer out of the legal system, but you can't take the legal system out of the lawyer...]

We don't maintain a prison, if that's what you're asking. There aren't enough resources to do that effectively.

[Maketh huffs a little.]

Community service is a popular theme.

Well, that is good to know. I'll have to try to stay out of trouble.

[A self-deprecating smile as if to say "what sort of trouble could I possibly get in anyway?"

And he certainly doesn't intend to cause anyone any grief.]

[Maketh quips a thin smile.] That would be appreciated, sir. Some of our number seem to enjoy causing the rest of us grief. But I have hope the tradition will not continue.
