What: The event log for the End of Arc 2
Where: All over the city
When: November 25th-December 12th
Warnings: A full-scale battle, including character death, NPC death, and various other ways to suffer
It was bound to happen. The Null warned you, after all, and this has been building for awhile - and now it's here. First comes the initial attack, the agents of the Null attacking Hope's temple. Then, an SOS, warning the city of what's happened: a betrayal, and Hope being injured. Luckily for everyone, thanks to the actions of his guards Hope survives the attack. Unluckily, his attacker, the goddess Delight, escapes and lets the Null in.
Flooding into the cave, the Null will attack anyone who they believe is resisting them. They'll destroy buildings and deploy dangerous crowd control weapons, in addition to their sheer strength and speed. Confusion empties the monsters in the tunnels into the city, to help distract the Null. Some gods fight, others provide safe havens, but everyone is in danger.
After about a week and a half of the attack, Fear summons enough power to teleport the city. This stops any new Null from arriving through the tunnels, but the remaining Null must be hunted down and destroyed, or else they'll signal their location to the rest of their species. The danger will lessen as Null are taken out, but things won't really be safe until Fear moves the city again, so don't get too comfortable.
What will you do? Run and hide? Fight? Help the fighters? Turn on the gods yourself? Whatever you do, it's time to make a decision.► This log covers November 25th-December 12th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you get taken out by the Null, please let us know here.
ii;
[Barry is weighing his options. These Null things just came out of nowhere - from his perspective anyway, all he knows about them is what he's caught in frantic whispers and 'long story short's while either hiding or running through the rubble of the city. They're hard to get a read on. If they are anything like the Hunger, a Magic Circle won't contain them, and he does not have slots to waste so he can find out. Running and gunning is not an ideal scenario for experimentation.
All he really needs to know is that these things are targeting his family. Taako and Lup are on their list. Count Barry among them. He won't let any of these things get close enough to touch them.]
Lup, hit'em! [He's shouting this as he casts Confusion, aiming right in the center of the three approaching robots. Only one of them withstands the enchantment attempting to scramble their core. The two other stagger, jerking in protest and bewilderment, limbs akimbo, prime targets for a blast of offensive magic.]
no subject
So maybe she's feeling just a little too confident when Barry calls out for her attack, Lup baring her teeth and laughing right in the face of danger, sparks dancing off the tips of her fingers. The city may be in danger and Lup's heart genuinely hurts for the people caught in the crossfire of this war, but she also feels so much more alive than she has in years.]
Gotcha covered, babe. [And she does. Overchannel is a bit unnecessary given how well they've been progressing so far, but Lup's a showoff, buzzing delightfully from the adrenaline coursing through her skinny frame. She casts Scorching Ray, hitting the two scrambled robots right in their processors, leaving them both to clatter to the ground lifelessly in one hit. Her third ray of flame manages to melt through the steel casing of the third robot, leaving it's shiny processor exposed and ready for the attack.
Lup laughs again before throwing up a hand around her mouth and yelling gleefully at Taako,] Nail 'em, bro!
no subject
Now, y'know, to not die and make it really like old times. He winks Lup's direction as he steadies himself for the draw.]
Oh, you got it babe.
[He doesn't need anything big here, but it's impossible for Taako to do something that isn't flashy. Three gold darts from Magic Missile sweep from the edge of the staff with a flourish, spinning in the air before they target the processor and shatter through it, leaving the Null to hit the ground.]
Boom! Suck it, fuckin' vore robots!
[He's only got a moment to celebrate, though, because these things are everywhere through the city, and quickly more can be heard advancing from both sides.]
We should, uh, we should move.
no subject
But now he completely revels in it. They're so powerful and confident in their abilities - which they should be - and their playfulness in the face of danger is almost nostalgic. They have every right to be flashy. It looks good on them.]
Agreed. G-Gimme a second. [Barry takes a deep breath as they rush forward, away from the approaching Null on either side, and he frowns with concentration as he casts Arcane Eye. He's immediately disoriented from the shift in perspective, as his optic nerves take in one set of information while the magical eye feeds him another. But he grits his teeth and sends the eye flying down the ruined streets ahead of them, peering past corners, darting up and down to get a read on any enemies up ahead.]
Two of'em up ahead! Fifty-three feet to th'north. One big guy, one little, they're blockin' the only road.
no subject
As Barry sends his magical eye out to survey for information, Lup's already throwing herself playfully against Taako's back, grinning while she gives the wide brim of his hat a teasing flick.] Gods, you're such a showoff. Remind me again why I'm teamed up with your lame ass instead of suplexing everything that moves with Mags.
[As if she'd want to be anywhere else. But Lup laughs just as Barry's report comes in, her attention quickly drawn ahead to where the Null must be waiting for them. If they're blocking the only road, they need to take them out and fast before someone less capable walks right into that trap.]
Sounds like a piece of cake to me. [She sweeps out her arm in a grand gesture and a fiery blade forms there in her hand, before she's cocking her head towards her twin.] Betcha I can take 'em both out before you're done posturing over here. Wanna get in on this one, Bar?
no subject
Uh, because I actually get shit done? You really wanna babysit Magnus out in all this? Puh-leeze.
[Taako tilts his head back towards Barry as he lets them know the score, mind formulating a plan even if Lup is already raring to go. He finally steps out from the both of them, twirling the Umbra Staff in his hand.]
Are you kidding? I could take both of 'em without either of you. Thanks for the notif Bar, but I got this.
[And just because he's a little shit, he starts bolting forward, and after a few steps blinks out of existence, intent on reaching the target first.]
no subject
[Not that Taako listens. Barry will always remind everyone to be careful even though they clearly have the situation under control. By the time they get around all the corners and past the rubble to catch up with him, Taako will probably have fried both the robots into pieces and molded their casings into something lewd just for fun. Show-off. Barry laughs as he watches Taako blink away.
He’ll keep the Arcane Eye active and trained on Taako’s position. Just in case.]
Hey Lup, I wanna keep surveillance goin’. Think y’could help me get there in one piece? I don’t wanna trip and ruin this beautiful face. [He fumbles at his side for Lup's arm, hoping for guidance while his eyes glaze and unfocus beneath his glasses, giving the magical eye full attention.
A pause.] Think he’ll be alright?
no subject
Ugh, fine. You're lucky I'm into that pretty face of yours. Need my trophy husband lookin' his best. [Lup holds out her arm so she can lead Barry carefully forward to where Taako's already disappeared, the elf already itching for the combat to come.]
Of course, he'll be fine. Not sure if you've noticed, but this shit's too easy.
1/2 whoopsy daisy
Hello, and gooooodbye, buddy.
[The bigger Null surges forward and Taako fades left, it's arm holding one of those energy swords that Taako intends on never coming into contact with. In fact, he's finally got a good idea of what he's wanting here, and he blinks away again, leaving the robots scrambling to catch him. He quickly reappears on their other side, a bigby's hand materializing from the end of the Umbra Staff with a wicked grin and a laugh. In an instant, it's wrapped itself around the smaller Null and it struggles in it's grip, winding it up like a baseball pitch before chucking it directly into the other Null's laser sword arm. There's a shower of sparks and a small explosion as the sword splinters off and lands heavy on the ground nearby, the Null's arm sliced in half, and the smaller one crushed completely as it crashes into a nearby building wall.
Taako whistles sharply, the larger Null looking at it's severed hand in something like surprise, and the elf looks back down the street where he's sure Lup and Barry will be emerging by now.]
Did you see that? Fuckin' classic. A real home run of a--
[... And that's where it all goes wrong.]
2/2, cw: blood, heavy injury
The twisted metal of the long arm slams into Taako's front, and in seconds, is visible again on the other side of him, clear out his back and straight through his gut.
The Umbra Staff clatters to the floor first, and the Null rips it's arm back out, sending Taako to the ground in a heap of meat and blood. For a second, he seems completely motionless, until a cough rings out with a shake of something much too wet and rough to be healthy.
The Null raises it's arm again, intent on going in for the kill.
Maybe he shouldn't have done this alone.]
no subject
Man, Lup, I wish you could see this. [He laughs, watching Taako taunt the Null before turning to call for them down the street.] He's completely wreckin' their day. Honestly, I think this just might be too easy for...
[He suddenly trails off, frowning a little as the larger Null rears back its destroyed arm, and when Barry realizes what's about to happen, it's already too late. He stiffens in Lup's grasp, all the color draining from his face, and he's shouting Taako's name as loud as he can, desperately trying to make his voice carry far enough for the elf to hear, to realize, to dodge out of the way in time. But the Null strikes so fast, the jagged metal of its arm piercing right through Taako, his friend, his family like he's nothing.
Taako drops to the ground, blood and viscera pooling around his lifeless form. Barry feels like he's going to vomit.]
Taako! [Immediately dispelling the Arcane Eye, he wrenches away from Lup and breaks into a heedless run, stumbling and tripping on the rubble under his feet. He's white-knuckling his wand, already charging a spell, the most powerful one he knows, the only one he knows that can stop the Null in its tracks before it does more damage. As soon as he rounds the corner, he blasts the Null with Finger of Death, sending it reeling backward with shudders and loud mechanical whirls, away from Taako.
Barry's not registering if Taako's moving at all, the shock and grief and fury blinding him to anything but the threat in front of him. The most important thing right now is disposing of the Null before it gets the chance to strike again.]
no subject
They're both showboaters. Performing in everything they do is just a given.
But Barry's amused commentary comes to a startling halt, Lup's attention flying to the man when he stiffens next to her. And she knows. Barry doesn't even have to react or say another word. She just knows.
The realization knocks the wind out of her like a punch to the gut, a chill shivering up her back. For a brief moment, Lup's too shocked to even react as Barry rips away from her touch and stumbles forward. Her heart is left racing, her feet frozen on the ground, while Taako bleeds out alone just a hundred paces ahead. They'd gotten too complacent in this place over the last months, too confident in their ability to always survive. Even after being forcefully ripped apart for a dozen years, Lup had been so completely assured that no one could ever come between them again.
But in the end, it wasn't Lucretia she had to worry about. It was her brother's mortality.
She sucks in a sharp breath and she's off, chasing after Barry. She's longer legged and quicker, so even with his head start, she catches up to him just as his spell is cast. Barry attacks the Null while Lup's gaze falls on her brother's broken body, quiet as her eyes dart over the sickening hole in his stomach, the blood pooling out around him.]
T-Taako... [Lup breathes out and the world burns.
She tears her gaze away from her brother and onto the robot covered in his blood, her wild flames curving protectively over Barry and Taako before they're fanning out across the whole city street. There's no discrimination. She screams while she burns through all of the Null in the vicinity, her voice screeching and unintelligible, while her powerful magic rips straight through the robots, leaving nothing but twitching metal frames behind.
Her fire scorches at the dirt that Taako's blood has soaked into before dissipating, Lup falling to her knees once the wave of anger has crashed over her. She feels lightheaded and sick to her stomach when she turns to look Taako's way. There he is, her very own heart bleeding out on the ground in front of them.]
cw still a lot of fucking blood
And the street lights the fuck up. Oh. She's here. That's... that's good. Bad? She shouldn't see him like this. He doesn't want to die without her. He can't worry about that right now.
His body wants to move, to get up, to get out of danger and run, but he feels lightheaded and sick. His heart beats faster with fear and that's only making it worse, blood soaking his hands, shirt, and pants as he presses them weakly into his stomach. Why does he have so much blood? Why can't it do something useful like stay in him? Taako tries to move, elbow pressing into the ground to roll himself sideways, legs feeling immobile. He only gets a few inches from the floor before he drops again, chest heaving, a wet and probably horrifying sound. It missed his lungs. That's nice.
It won't matter.]
Fuck. God... fucking... damnit.
[He tries to cough and it doesn't clear fully, the copper tang of blood leaking into the back of his mouth. He can't focus, doesn't know how far away she is, but she has to be... here, right? She can't help him. There was someone else. It's-- friend, family, Barry, right. But what's he gonna do, make his corpse dance?
He needs an answer. He needs something. But when things feel farther by the second, he can't think of what that thing is.
The arm he dropped on earlier reaches out into the charred, blood-soaked dirt, searching. His voice is weak, but maybe she can hear him. She always seems to find him.
Just let her be close. Don't let him be alone.]
Lup...?
no subject
The dust doesn't get a chance to settle before there's a sound behind him, a too-rough too-wet sound of someone coughing, breathing, speaking. Barry turns towards Taako, wide-eyed and staring, sick relief washing over him at the sight of his brother-in-law moving on the ground. He's not dead. Thank the gods, he's not dead.
It doesn't look like he's far from it, however. As Barry approaches and kneels beside the elf, he can see just how badly the Null hit him, the jagged edges of the gaping wound going straight through him, the tremendous amount of blood he's losing. It looks so painful. Barry doesn't realize he's crying as he watches Taako struggle, tears streaking down his cheeks covered in dust and soot. It's been a long time since he's been confronted with a death that means anything.]
T-Try not t'move too much, bud. Sh-She's right here, o-okay?
[There's nothing more he can do. There's no way to ease Taako's pain, no way he can save him, none he knows of. All he can do is be there for him as he fades, be there for Lup as her brother dies.
Taako needs his sister right now.]
no subject
Once she's on her feet, she's at Taako's side in an instant, dropping back to her knees and hovering over him, refusing to let her twin think even for a second that she wasn't there.]
I'm--I'm right here. [Lup's hands meet with Taako's right at his middle, pressing against his wound, ignoring the warm blood that slips through her fingers while she fails to stop his bleeding. Logically, she has to know it doesn't matter, that the blood soaking right through her clothing and into the ground is just too much to come back from. That the gaping hole in his stomach refuses to let him live. But she's distraught, manic in her desperation to save him, absolutely unwilling to just give in and let the most important person die.
It would be so much kinder to just put her brother out of his misery instead of allowing his suffering to prolong like this, but Lup can't. Not when there's no guarantee he can return to her.]
Taako, I'm not-- [Lup's eyes are flickering over Taako, wide and frenzied, her hands pushing into him, arms and shirt already so soaked in his blood.] I'm not going anywhere. I'm here... [It feels like her thoughts are being pulled in a million directions at once, her brain rushing through every single spell she has access to while also going down a list of what anyone could possibly do to fix this. To fix him.
Lup's head jerks upwards, panicked gaze falling on Barry.] B-Barry... [There's nothing he can do, nothing anyone can do, but she has to try.]
Merle can... Just call him!
no subject
And see, here we go again, he's not alone, because there are hands on him- Lup's hands, his sister, his heart. On a better day, he'd say some joke about how his heart being beside him is probably what accounts for all the blood, but it goes through his head like water. Still, whether it be from the joke or her presence, he feels himself smile just a bit. She's here. Alright, step one done.
But step two... that's harder. And more than the forgetting, he feels death pulling at him like a weight, like a sleep. Everything hurts. He's in so much pain, and the parts of him that aren't feel cold, disconnected. Wouldn't it be nice, it whispers, to close your eyes and feel nothing? Wouldn't it be kind to stop fighting? Let this be a problem for someone else. Let this be a problem for you in the future.
Lup's hands press to his again. He can't hear what she's saying, but it's enough.
Because he won't make it her problem. Anyone else's, maybe. But he'll always fight for her.
She's saying something about Merle, and he knows that isn't going to work. He's still stuck minus magic, and-- man, part three of why he hates this, he can't make it a goddamn comedy. Everyone's emotions are full-frontal, raw, spilling like he is onto the dirt below. He doesn't want this. And because he doesn't want this, he can feel something like anger, or stubbornness, or just straight-out defiance choked in his throat. Fuck this. He's not going to lose. He's not going to fucking lose.
And finally, it hits him. A moment of clarity. It... might not work, but fuck, he has to try. He's literally blown open, what other options does he have? Even if it kills him, well, fuck it, he's gonna goddamn die anyway. He just has to get there.
Taako's fingers connect with Lup's, giving them a bit of a squeeze. He needs her attention, and his words are limited. Now how to actually convey this.]
Lup. I need... I need you to...
[Damn, he can't even string this shit together properly. Okay. Baby steps. It takes him a couple of seconds through ragged breathing to remember where the stone even is on his person, and he slides a hand out from hers, trying to reach for the pouch tied to his hip. His movements feel big, like he's actually doing something, but the way his body is responding isn't as great. All Lup and Barry are gonna see is his hand falling out of Lup's hold, in the approximate direction of where he's trying to go.]
I need the... need the stone.
[Gods, please know what the fuck he's doing.]
no subject
But he doesn’t have it in him to tell her that it’s useless. That it’s over. That there’s nothing she or anyone can do. Barry doesn’t know how to tell her they should help end Taako’s suffering instead, let him go out with dignity, by his own volition, rather than slowly and painfully draining away into the dust and soil of a foreign world. It’s the only humane thing to do, the only respectful and loving thing to do. Taako deserves better, he deserves being given the choice. He’s dying either way. Barry needs to tell her.
Lup’s eyes meet his, frenzied and desperate, and the words turn to ash in his mouth.]
… There’s… Lup, there’s nothin’ Merle c-can do…
[His voice is so small, thin and choked and far away. Lup must know Merle can’t help. Even without his magic, even if there was some way to medically stabilize the elf, to close the wound, to replace all the blood, he would never get here in time. Taako’s fading fast. There’s no one around for miles. No one can help.
Barry’s magic also falls short. Merle could never quite teach him how to properly cast any clerical resurrection spells. He's got the necromancy down, but there's no divine connection with his magic, so no dice. All Barry could feasibly do is preserve the body until Merle’s magic returns, or until Hope gains the strength to restore the dead once more. That’s it. He doesn’t know of any way to convince Lup of that right now though. There’s only the fear, the fury, the grief that matters.
But then Taako speaks. Or tries to. His arm drops heavily to his side, fingers fighting to move, and Barry stares wide-eyed and bewildered as he tries to understand. Stone? What’s that supposed to mean? If he’s trying to tell them, it must be important, but no matter how hard Barry racks his brain, nothing comes to mind.]
Taako? B-Buddy? Lup, I-I don’t… What-- What’s he saying? What stone, wh-what’s he talkin’ about?
no subject
In the moment, she's too frenzied and desperate to be sickened by the sound her hands make pressing into her brother's gaping wound, but later, Lup will be haunted by the images, the sounds, the feel of it searing against her skin. She'll burn these clothes through when she has the chance. No amount of Prestidigitation will clean them enough to erase her memory of this awful moment.
Barry's answer, small and choked as it is, sends a violent wave of protest through the woman's trembling frame, her mouth twisting sharply, affronted. She's trapped between dueling emotions, knowing Barry's right but also absolutely refusing to just stand back and let her brother die. Her mouth opens, no doubt with something sharp and hurtful and completely unfair ready at her tongue, but Taako speaks, Lup's attention jerking back to him. She desperately wants to touch his face, to hold him close to her and bring him a little comfort, but she's so completely afraid he'll fall to pieces the moment she lets go of him.
Taako finally moves, weak and trembling when he squeezes her hand, before he's gesturing to nothing, muttering nonsense under his breath.]
Stone? [Naturally, Lup's first thought is of Taako's relic, that he was already fading and losing his memories, falling back in time to right after their Mistake. Was he asking for her to retrieve his relic from where he'd left it? Asking her to keep that world safe from the pain they've brought down upon it?] Taako, it's... it's gone. You don't have to worry about that anymore. It can't hurt anyone else...
[But his hand flops at his side, useless but pointing, giving Lup a brief pause when she catches the surprising fire behind his gaze. He's fading fast in front of them, but she hasn't seen her brother look this stubbornly ready to fight in a very long time. Her gaze drops downwards to his hand, staring, while her brain works to catch up. And it finally hits her, just as Barry's quietly asking what he could mean, Lup letting out a sharp gasp between her teeth.]
Your stone! [Her hands are soaked through with his blood, but she finally removes the pressure against Taako's middle to search his person for the rock in question. Hope feels like it's beating so hard within her chest that her heart may just outright explode, but Lup doesn't pause until she's located Taako's transmuter’s stone and presses it into his hand.]
Your goddamn rock! How does it work? [Her hand squeezes roughly around his.] Stupid piece of shit, you better fucking heal him!
no subject
He feels her move and has a moment of panic, still disoriented, and he shifts a bit like he's going to move towards her. But then there's something smooth being pressed into his hand, and he struggles to remember. Okay, that's... he got it.
How does he do this, again? Shit.
Taako sucks in a raspy breath, and everything feels dizzy. The world is spinning, horribly so, but he has to figure this out. He's barely got time. He has one chance. One fucking chance. The spell was... channeling the stored magic. It was going to destroy it, but fine, whatever, but-- did he have to break it? He needed to get to the core. It's his magic in there, not just some generic asshole, if he can get it open it'll find him. Maybe. Probably. Hopefully. God, this was a bad time to test this.
He's been laying here too long, and he squeezes it, but there's no strength in his hands. Thankfully, Lup's are over his, and he wheezes a bit, trying to get past the misplaced blood in his throat.]
It has... you... break it.
[Gods, that it's, that's all he has, and he shuts his eyes. His chest is still moving, but it's weak. She has to come through for him now, where every word is a struggle, every syllable a fight.]
Break it.
no subject
But Lup seems hopeful. Taako, despite his state, seems certain. Even though the plan sounds haphazard, maybe even dangerous - since the transmuter's stone is fashioned using the wizard's own magical energy, wouldn't the release of that magic following the destruction of the stone be explosive, possibly catastrophic? - Barry has nothing else to offer.
If there's even a remote chance this could work, that Taako's own transmutation magic would heal him, put him back together, they have to try it. And it if all goes haywire, at least they will be going down with him.]
D-Do it, Lup. Break it. [He leans in and puts his hands on Taako's shoulders, prepared to hold him down and keep him steady should it be necessary. His gaze is fixed on Lup, teary, bloodshot, frightened, but determined.]
... P-Please be careful.
no subject
Taako's hand is in hers and the rock is pressed into his palm. Her eyes flick up to Barry's, meeting his determined gaze for just a brief moment, before she's sucking in a sharp breath between her teeth and crushing the rock between the twins' linked, blood-slick hands.]
This better fucking work or Barry's bringin' you back just so I can kick your ass, you dickhead.
no subject
For all intents and purposes, Taako is right- the magic explodes out of the transmuter's stone, visible in swirling color and shape, a force behind it as it surges outward looking for a source. And it does find him, expanding out and then in, finding the injury in a sweeping motion from the ground and digging into the hole it left.
The difference is that this isn't healing magic. As talented as Taako is, clerical pursuits were never his forte- too much outward devotion, not enough flashy shit. This is still transmutation magic, and it's doing exactly that at a rapid pace. Magic moves in beams, scooping dirt out of the earth, pooled blood cycled back into fresh, skin grown from whatever raw materials are within it's reach. It's not creating anything- just changing it, masterfully so, back into what he needs, guts and flesh and bile. It's like watching him get knit back together at the end of a cycle, but only to his body.
It takes a minute or so to complete it's work, and when the magic dissipates, Taako heaves a breath, coughs, and immediately moves his free hand to his now fixed midsection, pressing indents in with his fingers. God, he feels sick. He thinks he'd vomit if he wasn't absolutely certain his stomach was empty, under the circumstances. For now, he's just breathing heavy, full body breaths, his middle moving in time with each inhale.]
Holy shit.
[His other is still in Lup's, the broken, powdered remains of the transmuter's stone between them, and Taako takes a few moments of silence.]
Holy fucking shit, that worked.
no subject
When it's over, when the swirls of magic dissipate leaving Taako with soft new skin under his shredded clothing, the hole going right through him no longer there, Barry lets out a shaky breath he hadn't realized he was holding. His brother-in-law speaks, and it's like the world falls back into place around him with a sickening thud. Heavy, nauseating, but right. It worked. He made it.]
Taako... [Barry's voice trembles, breath hitching, tears coming in earnest now. He lets go of his shoulders, settling back on his heels, pulling his glasses off and hiding his face as relieved sobs wrack his body in waves.] O-Oh my god, Taako...
no subject
After what feels like forever, Taako heaves a breath, coughing and alive, and Lup immediately bursts into tears, wailing out loudly between heaving sobs.]
You--You asshole! [She sucks in a breath but none of the calm she's trying for manages to stick, the elf's skinny shoulders shaking before she's throwing herself at Taako, clinging to where he's still sprawled out between her and Barry. Pressing her face into his chest, Lup's words may be a bit muffled, but the volume at which she's yelling manages to make them carry.]
I fuckin' hate you! You total dickhead! You're not--[her fingers curl into his shirt, just hard enough that her nails dig into Taako's side] You're not allowed to leave me! Not fuckin' ever! Don't you ever pull something like that again!
[The rest of what she has to say dissolves into wordless sobs, her whole body trembling atop his.]
