Good morning, and welcome to your first day in Hadriel. Feel free to acquaint yourself with the other travelers who are starting to wake up around you- or explore your surroundings for maximum survival odds!
You may notice that there are a few metal boxes lying on the dirt ground around you. At first these boxes seem innocuous, with no locks or mechanisms to keep them closed. However, any attempt at opening these them reveals that, not only is there absolutely nothing inside of them, but they just so happen to be a handy-dandy Scream-in-a-box from that stupid old Nickelodeon commercial. One peek and it echoes with a loud, bursting scream... though, anyone who tries to use this box to keep themselves awake will only succeed in pissing their neighbors off, because infomercials only exist to lie to you.
If you're concerned about something a little more sinister... well, you're right to be. Lurking in the shadowy corridors of the arena are Cacodemons, from the Doom game series. These nightmarish monsters travel around the area by floating a few feet off the ground. They are capable of firing plasma at you from their mouths, and their sharp teeth speak for themselves. While they're easy to shove back when they're not firing at you, they have a tendency to converge on a single target. You think you can handle one? How about five? Good luck... and try not to melt on your way out.
Once you've managed your daring escape from the colosseum, feel free to go explore the rest of the city! Find a house, find a new monster, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!► This log covers March 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well!
► All characters now arrive with phones that have network communication.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

one - network (jaime);
[Hiya, Hadriel. On the screen is a dark-haired teenage boy, but off the screen is a muffled screaming that just isn't stopping.
Jaime looks a little frazzled by this turn of events.] Hey! Uh, I'm new, and I suspect a lot of other people are, too, so for the people who have been around longer, is there anything we need to know that the gods haven't filled us in on yet? Whoops--
[The camera jars. Just as Jaime sinks lower, the screaming starts to come through more clearly. He mutters a swear under his breath and scrambles back onto the thing off-screen: apparently, he'd been sitting on top of the dumb box to keep it quiet. The poor kid looks back into the camera with a sheepish, apologetic look on his face.]
Also, please tell me we can turn these off.
two - action (blue beetle);
Watch out!
[Fortunately for Blue Beetle and whoever he's encountered, taking monsters out of commission is a little easier than yelling inanimate objects. Zipping in from above and darting out of the way of an advancing Cacodemon's plasma, he fires back with a bolt of bright blue light. The monster, stunned, wobbles away on a path to retreat-- just long enough for him to land. He might look a little like a monster himself to those unaccustomed to his alien appearance, but he's evidently here to help.
Also, he's a little short to be a towering arena beast. So there's that, too.
He extends a hand.]
Hey, are you okay? It's not safe in this area-- we should get out of here.

[He gets off, firmly holding the lid of the box down, then points the camera right at it. Jaime lifts his hand back up, and--
AAAAAAAAAAA-- thaaaat's enough he's slamming the top right back down.]
It screams if it's open. Literally, that's all it does.
no subject
That's new.
[Though less horrifying than usual. Maketh spits out a hair pin.] Try not to open it again. The noise could attract things.
Where are you?
no subject
[There's another peal of muffled shrieks from the box, as if in agreement.]
I'm by a river, I think? [He could send coordinates-- thanks, Scarab-- but he'd rather not arouse "why does a teenage boy know this detail off-hand" suspicion right away. Not to mention that using Khaji's powers to try to break the box has only resulted in this issue.]
I see a tower in the distance, maybe a few hundred yards away. I dunno. I can try to get to you instead, there aren't any monsters here right now.

[Of one flavor or another. At least this seems relatively harmless so far.]
I have a map. I've marked my location.
[A moment later, it appears as an attachment.]
That area is relatively safe, but be on your guard. I will meet you outside.
to action!

Two
And that's long enough to become a problen. She gets knocked on her ass and her hip bag lodged underneath her, leaving her unable to reach for any weapons she was lucky enough to bring with her. Her hands and legs flail at the thing towering over her, because however experienced she had been, she hated, passionately, instinctively hated, being locked underneath an attacker. It screamed of disadvantage and helplessness and--
The thing gets knocked back by some absurdly bright beam and she blinks away the light from her eyes as someone offers a hand that she shrugs off. Flipping up to a vertical position, Kate immediately grabs her gun from her bag and nods to the person who kocked the weird shit back. ]
Yeah. Not a bad plan. [ but let's just shoot anything coming this way to be on the safe side, huh? ]

[That sure was a flip. (How come he can't do flips like that? Without superpowers, anyway.) If the woman's capable of doing a flip, she's probably fine, so any concerns about having to carry her to safety are quickly banished.]
I think the coast's clear for now. There weren't too many behind that one, but we should probably be on our guard.
[He does, however, know far too many superheroes who aren't willing to own up to an injury. He'll at least ask.]
Are you okay? It didn't spit any of that stuff-- [Khaji Da, affronted at the lack of specificity, corrects him, so he rolls his eyes and corrects himself, too] --sorry, plasma at you, did it? Not sure what it'll do, but it's probably not good to get that on you.
no subject
Yeah, but doesn't seem like it did anything. [ She checks the areas she remembers being closest to it - her left side - and doesn't notice anything in particular on the surface. And nothing feels off under the surface. ] You got enough stamina to get us out of here? [ Because, seriously, she did not have nearly enough weaponry on hand for this. These things did not like to stay down. ]
video
[Says Bob, blunt and unhappy.]
video
[Somebody hit the alternate universe jackpot, apparently.]
video
[That's the horrible truth of it.]
video
[The thought of that puts an abrupt end to any sass.]
Is there any kind of food bank for the... are we prisoners, technically? Whatever we are.
video
[He admits.]
If you kill anything, keep it for the meat.
one [Video]
Dude, is someone being murdered or what?
[He's not actually angry, but has the tone of someone who's been startled and isn't happy about it.]
video;
[He points his camera at the scream-in-a-box he's sitting on: a hinge is broken and it looks a little misshapen, like it'd been tossed very hard at something or dropped from a great height.]
I didn't know you could actually make these. I thought they were a joke.
video;
I have no idea what it is, but yeah. Weird stuff is kind of what this place is all about.
Throwing it in the lake might work, though.
[Just a helpful suggestion.]
And um, I'm guessing you just got here?
video;
And yeah. It's only been a few hours. I'm already ready to get out of here, if these box things and whatever those giant flying things were are the day to day.
video;
[Just a hunch, but considering what the rest of this place is like he's pretty sure going into a deep body of water would be a bit of a disaster waiting to happen.]
They're uh... Not necessarily day to day, but yeah. Not uncommon either.
Unfortunately we don't really know how to leave, or there wouldn't be anyone here to reply to your message in the first place.
one, video
[The screaming coming from offscreen is a little alarming, and Adam looks somewhat doubtful of the situation in general.]
Uh... and what are you trying to turn off, exactly?
video;
And, um, it's a box. That screams.
[the box gives off a slightly louder shriek. He winces.]
Tons of fun.
video;
[If you trust the gods.
He eyes the box for a moment.]
Huh. Well. That sure is useless and creepy.
one, text.
[ HMMM... ]
I suppose you could take it somewhere remote and try destroying it. That way if it doesn't work it won't be a bother to anyone.
text;
I am never opening a box here again.
