Intro Log: Rock This City

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for January
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: January 10th-14th
Warnings: New folks, rockin' dudes made of rock, and collectible friends!

This time, it's different.

There's no cave, no stone walls looming up around you and overhead, no stifling air or artificial light- not that you'd appreciate it, seeing as to how you've probably never been here before. And still, when you land facefirst on the dirt ground of the colosseum, you may not quite appreciate all the improvements and steps we've had to take to get here- after all, you're still surrounded by strangers in a crumbling city on an alien planet in the middle of nowhere.

Oh, and you're being attacked by Earth Elementals. These creatures are tall, between seven to ten feet, and made of solid rock, capable of punching through all the squishy bits of you- and for whatever reason, they definitely want to start punching. They're incredibly strong and, seeing as to how they're enchanted alive and have no internal organs, they're very difficult to kill.

But don't let that scare you off. For all the collectors in you, you can also find a very special array of beanie babies all scattered at the ground at your feet. Do you know that some of these things will be worth a lot of money someday? Better find the rarest one and stockpile it while you can! You might run into the rainbow crab, the platypus, or the sought-after bald eagle, or many more! Be sure to never take the tag off and never ever let anyone play with them so they don't lose value.

Once you've got your kids' college fund squared away, it's time to start exploring! You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers January 10th-14th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

( There's always a shift each time she steps through a gate, a sense of displacement and an odd tingle through her body as they float through time.

You never can predict where you'll end up after floating through the Historia Crux, but this —

This doesn't look like anywhere on Pulse. Or Cocoon. The sky is unfamiliar, and the walls of this Colosseum are nothing like the one she left behind. Serah's hands curl into the dirt beneath her as she sits up, eyes flitting through a dizzying haze of adjustment and too much gosh darned sunlight. Her brows knit together as she squints until things come into focus and—
)

What the...?

( Praise be for all this time travelling through time, fighting monsters and solving paradoxes, it's given Serah just enough training to pull herself out of the way of a giant stone fist that comes crashing towards her.

Like a miniature Atlas, or something.
)

Mog? ( Silence. Serah squeaks as she manages to dodge yet another attack, more concerned with looking for the friends she couldn't see as soon as she woke up than she is with fighting. ) Noel?

( Again, nothing.

She's out of weapons and friends. So, then, the best thing to do is hope that magic works. She strikes the oncoming elemental with a small blast of ice and is rewarded with the sounds of pain, or limbs crunching as they freeze, one of the two. It's enough to spur Serah into moving, turning tail to run. She's on her own and without any weapons, no way her magic is enough to face something like that alone. And maybe, if you're lucky (or unlucky) enough to come across her, she might just gesture for you to come with her.

Not that she has any idea where she's going.
)

➼ open / the city
( No Mog. No Noel. And it looks like there's no Chocolina, either. Serah huffs out an exhale as she leaves another shop without anything. So little there, no one to ask about anything, and no weapons at all.

Noel told her that he was the last of humanity, the last hope for their timeline left square on their shoulders. Right now, Serah wonders if maybe her initial reaction was incorrect. Perhaps this is Pulse, dying around her. The last remnants of their civilisation. The phone she carries in one hand and the guide installed on it suggest otherwise, but it certainly feels like the world around her is existing on a wing and a prayer.

Maybe she's just traded one dying world for another.

But whatever thoughts plague her, Serah quickly plasters on a smile as someone walks by. Maybe they can help with her more immediate problem.
)

Excuse me—! ( Hold up, stranger. ) Could you help me? I'm looking for a place to buy weapons.

i.

[Back here again, and somehow Kyna isn't surprised. What's less expected is how her sense of time is all screwed up. It simultaneously feels like she's been gone forever and like she was just here yesterday, and maybe that's because it's clear nothing has changed. It's still suffocatingly hot, they're still in some sort of desert hellscape, and there's still a bunch of bullshit monsters running around.

This time they're some sort of rock elementals, which isn't great. They're moving slowly, at least, but one heads for her and for a terrifying split second she's not sure if her magic will be gone again. It makes her slow, and the lightning bolt she fires off is just a hair too late. She has to drop to the ground to keep from being brained by a rock the thing hurls at her. Still, even though the creature shakes off the spell like it's nothing, and even though using a lightning spell on an earth elemental was an idiotic instinct in hindsight, she's grinning. Her magic is fine, which means she's fine, obviously.]

ii.

[After warding off a few elementals, Kyna finally has a second to breathe. She needs to figure out how long she's been gone and if any of her friends are still here, obviously. And where the hell are Tucker and Harlan?

It's on her way out of the colosseum that she steps on a beanie baby, and when she bends down to scoop it up, finds a little fox. Sly, the nametag reads. Kyna brushes it off and stands, then calls out to whoever's nearby.]

Hey, wanna trade? Wait, did people trade these things?

[She feels different when she wakes up in the colosseum, in more ways than those that come from living another five years of her life. Different in that this all seems familiar. Different in that she is not afraid. Different... in that she feels as though she should have beaten this place the way she has beaten so many murderers, and yet here she is again, powerless against it.

There are no mutated wasps this time, but Brennan knows by now that the things that appear in the colosseum have every intention of hurting the people who wake there. So as a large earth-looking monster slowly makes its way towards her, she gets up and runs out of the arena. She hopes at least some of the others saw her and have followed, but she is not going to wait for them. She is concerned with staying alive, for her family's sake, and because she needs to know if the friends she made here are alive and relatively well.

Outside, it is hot and muggy. She looks around, willing to help anyone out here who might need it-- until she spots Sweets.

It is too much, seeing him again, too amazing and heartcrushing. They lost him three years ago and it still hurts. After what has happened in the last few months alone, there is little that can stop the emotional reaction the sight of him stirs in her: the sting of tears in her eyes, the bittersweet ache in her chest, the desperate urge to run and hug him and never let go -- or at least, hold him for a good long while.

So run she does, calling out his name and going immediately for a hug.

There's a few seconds where all she does is breathe shakily, and then, before she lets herself rationalize away the thought, she says,]

I couldn't save you. I'm so sorry.

[Aloy finds herself facedown in the dirt, which is really nothing new at this point. When she pushes herself to her feet, there's a moment where all her mind can supply is that she's in the Sun-Ring again, though this arena is far more decrepit and ruined. Somehow, the instant realization that she has no idea where she is is less comforting.

The sudden sound of stone grinding against stone behind her makes her whip around, but before she can react, one of the creatures is throwing a well-aimed blow at her head, and Aloy is too close to react. The shimmering force field her armor is emitted takes the brunt of the blow, leaving her uninjured, but she still staggers back, teeth gritted. What the hell is that?

Instinct tells her there's no time to figure it out. She turns on her heel and sprints towards the arches at the edges of the arena, sliding behind cover and practically slamming into someone else's hiding place. Great. Maybe they can give her some answers, at least.]

What are those things?

ii

[So, every time Aloy thinks things have gotten strange enough, they get stranger. It's like the theme of her life now, and all she can think to do is wander the city, brow furrowed. This place is utterly alien to her—buildings, people, all of it.

Then again, Aloy isn't exactly normal looking herself. Her clothing is a mixture of carefully hand stitched leather and hide, offset by cannibalized armor that's clearly much more technologically advanced. She looks like an anachronism made flesh, and she's utterly annoyed. Her voice is blunt when she pulls aside the first unfortunate person she sees, all business.]

[Lance had debated with himself for a time about whether or not to go into the arena this month; he's neither mentally nor physically really well enough to do so, and doesn't have many bullets left and only a limited selection of magic, but he still wants to help and do something useful. But logic had won out, and he'd decided instead to lurk not too far from the arena instead, in order to help direct new arrivals.

Still, although he'd been holding out the faint, possibly unrealistic hope that Brennan would return, he's not at all expecting to see her or hear her voice. But the hug itself somehow doesn't startle him and he returns it immediately, not quite processing just yet that she really is back and everything that goes with it, at least not until she speaks again.

It's obvious what she means, immediately, and it tells him she must've been gone for some time for her. But the words themselves are a confirmation of something he's been thinking about his entire time in Hadriel, and although he feels like they should be a shock, or at least upsetting, it's just... It's just telling him something he already knew, on some deep level, and all it means is that he can stop wondering.

But that's less important right now than the fact that Brennan is back--everything is less important, really--and he just hugs her tighter for a moment in a brief show of reassurance.]

Don't be; it's okay. It wasn't your fault.

[There was nothing she could've done, and that's something he's also somehow known.]

I'm just... I'm sorry you're back, but I'm really glad too. I missed you.

A blighted golem, at a guess, but nothing that I can injure.

[ A voice behind Aloy will reveal Cecily, an archer whose gaze is on the monster. It doesn't look good; her arrows aren't doing any damage, and she suspects it'll be the mages who can really get to these beasts. In the meantime, though, she's hear to help any and all newcomers to safety, as she will convince herself to do every so often. ]

I can explain more about what's going on if you'll kindly come with me. Away from those things. [ The Inquisitor nods her head toward the exit of the colosseum, waiting patiently, bow drawn, for Aloy to concede.

The quicker they can escort everyone out and into the town, the better... ]

The Armory would be the place for that. [ She informs the young woman, trying to guess at her age. ] Near Rage's temple, if you've never been there.

[She knows, rationally, that it was not her fault, but the memory still saddens her, enough that she cannot stop tears from spilling down her cheeks.]

We watched-- and we couldn't do anything. We couldn't help you.

[She still dreams about it, and so does Booth. She believes the dreams will become less frequent over time, but she is certain they will never cease altogether.

And now she is here, and so is Sweets. She does not want to let him go, but she knows she must eventually, so Brennan looses her grip on him a little, enough that he can pull away if he wants.]

I've missed you, too. So much. We've all missed you.

[ This certainly isn't Kansas anymore. Or Limbo. Or Hell or Heaven for that matter. It's some place new for certain and it's enough to have taken the murderous wind out of Vergil's sails as he tries to figure out what's going on and why. He can't fault the timing, if anything as whatever brought him here saw fit to heal his wounds too.

The rock elementals are a pain, a surprise, but not a chore to avoid. The one Vergil did run into is in more pieces than it started out with, though with the amount of effort it took to take that thing down Vergil would rather not have to fight his way through a few hundred of those things thank you very much.

Besides, the beanie babies are odd enough that Vergil leans down to scoop one up, glancing over as someone speaks up. Trade? The small stuffed toy? The one he's snagged is Smoochy the Frog™ (though unless it's a prince in disguise Vergil is certain there will be zero smooches for this one) and he gives the smallest of smiles at the question.]

For the first time in quite a few months, the signs and network invitations leading to the Speakeasy have returned, a few days following the arrival of new faces. Now that people have had some time to settle in and get over the shock of a whole new world, those who wish to unwind have come to the right place.

Or, of course, anyone is free to help themselves to food and refreshments. The music from the jukebox on the stage plays louder than ever, over a flashing dancefloor with gold tinsels and a disco ball hanging overhead.

Lights sparkle like stars hanging over the party scene, giving the room a much more lively feel to it. Clearly a lot of work for one person alone, but with the aid of Rose and Alphys, the usually calm Speakeasy is much more vibrant than before.

Bored? Then dance, or take a place on the stage and sing horribly in front of your drunk friends so they can make fun of you later.

Have a drink at the bar, where Rey is diligent in serving up new brews for the first time in over a month. Those who have paid her house visits over the last few weeks might notice a change in her melancholy disposition -- but for anyone else new and unaware, she is just doing her part in making certain people feel at home, or relax in light of recent events.

It's the least she can do, and a more than needed distraction from what can be considered her new normal now.

[ooc: The third official Hadriel Welcome Dance Night! Consider this an open mingle thread for old and new characters. So tag in, tag out, hit up your friend/partner/Rey if preferred. Enjoy the lights and shinies. Also the timeline for this is pretty loose, so feel free to assume that this is set around the 11th-12th]

Aren and Barkspawn

[personal profile] paragonbrosca 2018-01-10 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Find them at:

1. The bar, duh. Aren isn't a big drinker, at least not that she's let on, but there's nothing wrong with having one or two to be social. Barkspawn, her large canine companion, is plopped down on the floor by her, either watching the disco ball in fascinatin or gnawing at his claimed platypus. Anyone, familiar or not, will be met with a smile as the dwarven woman raises her glass.

"Pretty damn festive, isn't it? I've never seen a tavern so sparkly before. It kinda makes my plans for a party by the hot springs seem tame, but I'm not complaining."

2. Dance floor! She can't resist the lure for long; as Barkspawn guards their space, Aren will join in when a new rhythm inspires her to do so. Anyone who looks as though they want to join in but is being shy about it will draw her attention and she'll offer her hand with a grin. C'mon, what harm would there be in one dance or a few?

3. Singing? Maybe it's the drinks, maybe it's finally relaxing after what feels like forever of not being able to let her guard down, but later into the night, she'll either join in some group singing or start her own. Be prepared for a rendition of Andraste's Mabari.

So the rock monsters aren't the surprise but the small toys are. I see.

[ Seriously, it says it all really. This place is what back home will be now with Limbo sinking in. Vergil is starting to wonder if he ought to be using this time as practise, if not research.]

(Colosseum)

[Today was a particularly bad day to get whisked away to another world.

But then again, it's not really as any other day would have been any better. The sensation is unpleasant, to say the least-- absolutely jarring, really. Waking up on the ground, while unfortunately not a new situation, in these particular circumstances is unfamiliar. Granted, he doesn't even realize the circumstances are far different from what he's anticipating.

A soft noise escapes him as he comes to, dazed for only a moment, before a particular sight before him shocks him into awareness.

A large, anthromorphisized pile of rocks, lifting its leg-like limb as it stares down at him.

He narrowly rolls out of the way, the vibration from the impact a bit jarring, but luckily, he's able to scramble to a stand, and just in time to avoid a swing from its arm.

What?

He backs off, taking the half a second to see about his surroundings, which are just as confusing as the stony monstrosity before him. His gaze flicks back to the monster, and it's advancing on him.

He turns away to start running, but there's another one right there, and while he's quick to react, this one does clip his shoulder, and with a startled, pained noise, he's thrown off-balance and nearly to the ground— but a hand manages to catch him before he completely falls over.

Still, it looks like he's struggling and he's definitely not pulling out any weapons, so maybe lend a hand?]

(Out and About)

[On the other hand, you may find him outside, either quietly walking around and taking in the sights, or occasionally stopped with a furrowed brow and a solemn expression and obviously quite deep in thought.

Though, if he notices you, he'll quickly offer up a friendly smile and a nod.]

Good day.

[Yusuke had been passing in a hurry; it hadn't escaped his notice that there are new arrivals, and so his main interest is in seeing how he can render his services to them. Which usually means putting in an appearance at the Colosseum to help fight off anything brought through the Door alongside them, but this time, also in directing them to provisions and help. The change in climate here is almost as threatening as whatever monsters put in an appearance, and it wouldn't do to save anyone, only for them to suffer from dehydration or heatstroke.

So he doesn't even spot Akechi until he's addressed, after which the artist all but jumps out of his skin, whirling around and backing up, eyes searching him to check he isn't armed.]

Anyway, after getting his bearings a little bit, he starts to wonder if, like last time, Kyna and Harlan got trapped along with him. Have they been here for a month like before? Are they from two weeks in the past this time? Only one way to find out.

He spots Kyna, uselessly trying to cast lightning bolts on what looks like an earth elemental. Jesus Christ, K. He's pretty sure she'll be able to handle it once she remembers how physics works, so instead of being productive, he snags the nearest beanie baby- wait, shit, these things still exist? haha- and lobs it at the back of her head. He diligently takes drink after drink all the same, sticking to the bar, watching out for new faces, trying to finally get some of the old ones memorised. Doesn't look like there's an easy way out of this, better start jotting down names.

1. Colosseum

...toys? [There's...really not a reason for that is there? They look like something Az might have played with when he was still a harling and that brought up all kinds of things he didn't want to think about. He couldn't afford a breakdown right now--or ever, probably. Still, he bends down and picks up a ridiculous creature and stares at it for a few moments trying to figure out what it is, before he sighs and drops it back on the ground, confused.

They're everywhere and he can't even come up with a reason why they would be. He couldn't even imagine that one person had lost so many of them. Was this some human thing? If so, he could see why they hadn't brought it with them when hara took the world from them.

And it doesn't help with the whole surreal feeling of showing up in the first place.]

2. Colosseum again

[At first Swift is convinced that this whole thing is a dream--what else could it be, right? Turning up in an arena still holding a handful of papers from his office and staring at giant rock monsters Which, admittedly, is not the strangest thing he's ever seen happen, but it's still surreal enough that "dream" is the logical first conclusion.

It's not until he has to dodge the third stony fist thrown in his direction as he tries to get out that he starts to wonder whether this might actually be real. And that thought is even more terrifying. He could actually die and he has no way to stop it except hoping that he's just a little faster.

Of course there's one standing right in front of what looks most likely to be an exit. Just his luck. He stares at it for a moment, but he doesn't have long before it notices him. How is he supposed to get out of this one?]

3. Exploring

[The more he explores outside the colosseum, the more confused Swift gets. A city in a desert? He'd almost believe he'd somehow ended up finding Saltrock except that it was too big. And too...strange. Too hot, too, but from what he'd heard of the place that wasn't all that unusual.

He's too afraid to try beyond the borders--he's got nothing to protect him from the heat or whatever might be out there--so he sticks to the city, taking shade where he can find it until he feels like he can manage walking around a little more, trying to get his bearings and only ending up disoriented, looking for anyone who might be able to give him more information and only getting frustrated. People are probably smarter than he is, though, and are staying inside.

He might have to try that next.]

( it's been two years since leliana has seen the colosseum, though despite their change in surroundings it's instantly familiar to her. lighter, more open, but she'd seen these rocks for many months, helping others as she'd been helped on her arrival.

it's one reason why she's quickly scanning her surroundings, knowing that other things are never too far behind. her instinct is correct, and despite the size of the monsters, leliana's still pulling her daggers out. she's seen golems felled by lesser means, surely these will be too.

she spends only a few seconds sizing one up before the first dagger is thrown, the rogue moving quickly out of its trajectory, barely dodging the punch )

( leliana's on her way out of the colosseum when she locates her. the inquisitor. she'd been about to search for her, investigate the city's new surroundings and discover whether her friend remained, yet it seemed that cecily was going to make that easy for her.

leliana shouldn't be surprised, by the fact that the woman is somehow still in the city and that she's in the colosseum. despite all that had happened the inquisitor was still caring, still looking to help out others. admirable, especially after all of this time )

Inquisitor.

( her steps are silent as leliana approaches, trying to determine as much as she can about cecily from the few seconds glance she has. it had been two years and yet... things were different here given that for leliana cecily hadn't been the inquisitor. would things be the same? what had happened in her absense? )

i. in the coliseum
[It had not taken Nil long to realise that these were foes he should not be blindly throwing himself at in the seeking of the thrill of battle. The only blood to be shed would be his, and he regards that as somewhat of an uneven trade.

At first, he finds cover near the ground, moving swiftly and quietly and perhaps he grabs you on his way and pushes you into a corner or behind a wall, placing one finger against his lips to shush you while the light of something almost feral glints in his eyes. If not spoken to, he'll quickly vanish, leaving the person he 'rescued' bewildered as to who, or indeed what he is and just why he did what he did. He might be found in cover himself, working his way slowly towards an exit that he's already spotted.

You don't spend years as a Carja soldier without learning these kinds of tactics.

Or, you might see him making a dash for said exit, with an elemental hot on his trail. He reaches the passage out - one narrow enough that they can't follow - and turns just inside, just far enough away that the grasping hands of the thing can't reach him. Barely far enough away, in fact. By this point, he's bruised and a little bloody, but looks oddly serene about the entire thing.
]

I do enjoy a challenge. [He hums, speaking to the thing like one might address a fellow person.] But you're really not playing fair.

ii. city streets
[After he leaves the coliseum, whether through being coaxed away (in which case he has by now abandoned said coaxer) or by his own reasoning that there is no challenge to be found there that he wishes to meet. Nil is not one who is easily ignored, but he picks his way through the half-ruined buildings with the air of someone walking through a museum - quiet, careful, taking everything in with a razor-precision as if mapping out the place in his mind. That is, of course, exactly what he's doing.

A noise behind him is just enough to startle, and maybe it's you that suddenly finds themselves facing an arrow drawn so swiftly into a bow that the movement was almost a blur. Even on realising there's no threat, or no immediate one, he doesn't relax his weapon.

You. Do you know enough of this place to answer questions?
