Intro Log: Rock This City

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for January
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: January 10th-14th
Warnings: New folks, rockin' dudes made of rock, and collectible friends!

This time, it's different.

There's no cave, no stone walls looming up around you and overhead, no stifling air or artificial light- not that you'd appreciate it, seeing as to how you've probably never been here before. And still, when you land facefirst on the dirt ground of the colosseum, you may not quite appreciate all the improvements and steps we've had to take to get here- after all, you're still surrounded by strangers in a crumbling city on an alien planet in the middle of nowhere.

Oh, and you're being attacked by Earth Elementals. These creatures are tall, between seven to ten feet, and made of solid rock, capable of punching through all the squishy bits of you- and for whatever reason, they definitely want to start punching. They're incredibly strong and, seeing as to how they're enchanted alive and have no internal organs, they're very difficult to kill.

But don't let that scare you off. For all the collectors in you, you can also find a very special array of beanie babies all scattered at the ground at your feet. Do you know that some of these things will be worth a lot of money someday? Better find the rarest one and stockpile it while you can! You might run into the rainbow crab, the platypus, or the sought-after bald eagle, or many more! Be sure to never take the tag off and never ever let anyone play with them so they don't lose value.

Once you've got your kids' college fund squared away, it's time to start exploring! You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers January 10th-14th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[While Brennan and Sandy reunite, Lance goes to get water from the refrigerator; there's still pretty much no food in his apartment other than what he's been making sure to get for Sandy, but at least he's managed to stay on keeping water stocked. This batch is from Delight's temple, so free of any effects.

He returns to the living room, offering Brennan one of the bottles as she speaks, and her words answer one question he has; it's been three years. That means she's been home for five or so, since she was here last, and it also means that he can ask--]

Is... Is everyone okay? How are Daisy, and...?

[He can't ask directly about his child, because if he does then the careful semblance of calm that he's been holding onto will completely fall apart in an instant. He doesn't want that to happen in front of Brennan, because she's clearly dealing with enough already.]

[She takes the water, then moves to sit at the table. Sandy nestles against her, purring up a storm. Perhaps Booth was right about getting a dog. Perhaps, when she is back home again, she will relent, even without the memories of having been here.

Her gaze shoots up to his when he asks his questions, and right away, even she understands him.]

Daisy and Seeley are doing great. [Her smile widens, though it's still sad.] Daisy is a wonderful mother, and Seeley-- we all love him so much. He looks like you, you know.

[And she does not even mean that in the sense that young babies tend to look like their fathers. Seeley Lance Wick-Sweets does, in fact, look like his father.

As for everyoyne else... Brennan takes a sip of water, which quickly turns into more of a gulp. She had not realized how much the walk here had taken out of her.]

Everyone is great. Angela is pregnant, Cam and Arastoo got married and are adopting three boys, Booth and I have a son...

[There have been bad things, too -- Booth's relapse, the explosion that put Hodgins in a wheelchair, the reappearance of Aubrey's father, Max's death -- but when all is spoken and completed, things are better than she would have said ten years ago they would be.]

Oh-- Zack is being released. He's being made to finish his sentence for aiding a murderer, but he didn't kill anyone. We found evidence to prove it once he confessed. He's coming home.

[Daisy and Seeley. So she did name him after Booth after all, like Lance had wanted; he'd felt like she would, but it's still nice to know for sure what his son's name is. And if Brennan says he looks like him then Lance believes it, and he thinks briefly about the god-prompted dreams he had a few months ago. His son had looked like him in the dream, too.

It's no surprise to him that Daisy is a great mother, or that the group would be love his son, but both are good things to hear. They'll be okay--they are okay--without him. Knowing that makes it all easier.

And the rest of the news is welcome as well; more kids, another marriage, and seemingly everyone being on track to continue having success and happiness in their lives. He's very, deeply glad for all of that.

The part about Zack, though, takes him by surprise, but he'll get to that in a moment.]

I'm... I'm really glad to hear that. What's your son's name? How is Christine? Is she starting kindergarten soon, or has that already happened?

[He wants to ask more about his son and Daisy as well, but he still can't bring himself to go into more details; right now it's enough that they're both doing well.

So he'll talk about Zack, next.]

That's great; really, really great. I... He told me years ago, but he didn't want anyone to know.

[But now there's no need or point in keeping the secret here, now; even if Zack shows up here again, Brennan already knows the truth.]

[She answers the questions as they come, keeping it brief because it hits her, then, how much there is to talk about.]

Hank. She's getting straight A's. She loves school. She says she wants to sell cars when she grows up.

[Brennan imagines they will talk more once things have settled back down. For now, she is content to keep to the subjects he brings up.

Including what he says about Zack. After all this time, she is still an open book, so her surprise is as clear as daylight on her face. Why would Zack want them all to think he was a murderer? That, more than Sweets keeping the secret, is what stays with her. Sweets was acting as Zack's psychologist, and was therefore bound by professional ethics to maintain confidentiality.

But that does not make it into the conversation now. Later, perhaps, she will ask questions. Right now, she is the one with the answers.]]

He couldn't even kill in self-defense. One of his doctors was trying to murder him, and Zack had a chance to kill him, but he couldn't. [A small, almost bitter, but fond laugh.] I knew it. I knew he wasn't capable of murder.

[Of course their son would be named Hank, and Lance is not at all surprised to hear Christine loves school; he's so glad she'd been old enough for him to start taking to parks and having whole conversations with and the like, because she's so smart and has so much personality. He highly doubts the desire to sell cars will last, and so that just makes it even cuter.]

I'm sure if she does end up selling cars, she'll be really good at it.

[Because she'll be good at anything. But the story about Zack is... Not exactly hard to believe, considering their lives, but a little surreal. One of his doctors was trying to kill him? Was it someone Lance knows, or someone that came into the picture after Lance was no longer able to visit? Whatever the answer, and whatever the reason, Lance is quietly incensed in the way he usually is when someone who is supposed to be helping a person in their care turns out to be doing anything but. It's far too common.

But it seems to have turned out alright, at least, so that's what he tries to focus on.]

We talked about that, when he told me he wasn't actually guilty of murder. He said he would've done it if Gormogon told him to, but I tried to tell him he couldn't know that until it came down to it.

[And it's good to know--and not just because Lance likes being right--that Zack really, honestly wasn't capable of such a thing after all.

And he lets silence hang for a moment, after addressing all of that, because he has to decide if he wants to ask the other things lingering on his mind. Now that they've talked about the good things, it feels like maybe the time for stalling is over.

So, after a moment, he speaks up again softly.]

You said that... You said that you were with me?

[At least, that's the impression he'd gotten from 'we watched', but he doesn't know for sure who 'we' might be. Brennan and Booth had been together, so maybe both of them, but he can't leave it to interference; he has to know what happened, even if he's being vague himself as to what he's talking about.]

She'll be the best at whatever she does.

[That is a certainty, in Brennan's mind. Like how Zack couldn't possibly take someone else's life. She'd spent all these years wondering where he'd gotten lost, only to find now that he wasn't nearly that far gone to begin with.]

You're correct. I can do it, if I or someone else is in mortal danger. I have done it. But to go to someone, intending to kill them-- that's different.

[That's murder, and no one in her circle is a murderer.

In the silence, she scratches Sandy behind the ears, soothed by the fox's purring. The change in subject seems natural by then. The subject of Zack and his imprisonment are still painful despite its resolution, so talking of Sweets's death now means she doesn't look any sadder. The change is in her voice, in the slightest lowering in pitch and roughness to it. She won't cry now, but the emotions are still there from that awful day.]

Aubrey told us where you were. Booth and I ran to you while Aubrey called for an ambulance. Your injuries-- [the ones she healed here with Hope's blessing, god] --they caused internal bleeding. There was no time. There... there was just no time. We stayed with you until-- until you were gone.

[It's very, very different; Lance knows he could do it himself, and intended to during the fight that ends his life, but he doesn't believe he could ever bring himself to do so in any other situation. Even here, he regrets having to kill monsters and the Null, despite it being always in self defense.

He's quiet as Brennan continues, watching her as much as listening, and the information is... It's not bad, not really. Of course he would've wanted a different outcome, but not being alone--and not only that, but having Brennan and Booth there specifically--is possibly the best way this one could've occurred.

But best case scenario or not, he can't find words right away, so at first he just gives a small nod and turns his gaze toward the floor; he tries not to think too much about the actual altercation itself normally because the memories are difficult, and those emotions combined with the mix of things he feels from what Brennan told him is just overwhelming and impossible to make sense of right away. But he does find his voice, at least, after another few seconds.]

I'm sorry. That must have been... Difficult.

[Seeing people die isn't easy, and he can't imagine having to watch someone he cares about do so.]

But... Thank you. Knowing that I won't be alone is...

[His voice won't stay steady, as he's still struggling to keep his emotions under control, but the point is probably clear enough. Knowing he won't be alone helps make the entire thing easier to handle and begin to accept.]

Yes, it was.

[To watch someone you love die -- it will never be easy. To feel helpless, powerless, and to be reminded that no one can escape death... Brennan looks at death's handiwork every day at work, but it is different when the deceased is someone you know. Vincent Nigel-Murray. Sweets. Aldo Clemens. Jared. Max.

At least Sweets is here now. The warmth of having this time with him here twists in her chest, and she reaches out to grasp his hand. He is here. He is really here.]

We found your killer. We solved the conspiracy. You... your death was not in vain, even though we all wish you'd survived.

[personal profile] lifetothefullest 2018-01-13 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Although the contents of what she says are not exactly surprising, what's surprising is that Lance hadn't really thought to ask if they might've solved the conspiracy, or caught the man who'd murdered him. Those are things that should've been important, and yet he didn't--and still doesn't, really--care all that much, other than in the sense that the very dangerous conspiracy is apparently no longer a threat.]

Did Booth... Were things able to go back to normal for him, with the FBI? Do he and Aubrey get along?

[Those are the more important things that he wonders about, and that hopefully ending the conspiracy made possible. That, at least, would indeed make Lance's death worth it.

A part of him wants to ask about the person who killed him--what was his name, was he just someone hired by a person in the conspiracy or was he actually a part of it, is he still alive--but the rest of him doesn't want to waste the time and energy thinking about him.]
notimpervious: (and we will be as one)

[The impact Sweets had on their lives is, to Brennan, the most important thing. Now more than ever, she wants to solve the puzzle of the Door, wants to turn back time and save him.

But one thing at a time. She has only just returned, there is a purring fennec fox on her lap, and Sweets has asked her a few questions.]

Yes. Booth got his old job back. And yes, they get along. Aubrey... it took us some time to adjust to him, and him to us, but we... make a good team. He is not you, but... he never tried to be.

[Aubrey has always been uniquely Aubrey, and that is why he fits so well with them all, in Brennan's opinion. Also, he knows a little about anthropology, and that is always a good thing.]

Christine likes him, too. [And then suddenly--] I have pictures. I have one of him and Christine, that's why I remembered. I can show you.

[Her phone from home still has enough battery that she can show him the many pictures of her family, by blood and by choice. So she pulls it out of her pocket now and goes to show him Christine with Aubrey, and then one of Daisy and Seeley, and of Hank, and everyone else -- skipping the less than appropriate ones from around the house, oops..]

[Good. That's all really good to hear; Lance had liked Aubrey a great deal in the few months they'd known each other, enough so that he'd trusted him with helping in the investigation, and he's glad that faith in the other agent hadn't been misplaced. It's reassuring to know that he found a place in the team, and could help support everyone in his place.

He can't help but smile a little at the comment about Christine liking Aubrey as well, but the rest of what Brennan says shouldn't be surprising and yet it is. And, suddenly, he doesn't know what to feel; he hadn't even considered the idea that she might have pictures, and his emotions are a confusing mix of apprehension and hope and anticipation and fear. But he wants to see, and so he watches her pull the phone from her pocket and flip to the first image of Aubrey and Christine; it's obvious immediately how well they get along, and seeing how big Christine has gotten is difficult to imagine when he'd seen her so recently before arriving here.

The next picture--the one of Daisy and Seeley--is so normal and yet so unexpected that it's surreal, and he stares silently at the image for several seconds. He isn't really processing it, not yet, at least nothing more than the bright and matching smiles of the two people he loves so much, even if one of them he's never met. They look so happy. They really are okay.

It's still too much to really absorb by the time she moves on to the next image, of Hank, but it helps to be able to shift his focus at least temporarily; Hank is adorable, but no surprise there considering his parents and sister. And he glances through image after image of the others, who he all misses so much, and he though he isn't there with them any longer--and will likely never see them again--they suddenly don't feel quite so far away.

When they've gone through all the photos, Lance pulls his phone--the one given to him here in Hadriel, not his cell phone from home--from his pocket, because he has an idea.]

Can I... Can I try to get some pictures of the pictures, before your cell phone's battery runs out?

[It'll be nice for both of them, if it works, and more than just that Lance really needs the time to look at the photo of Daisy and Seeley; it will probably be the last--and, in regards to Seeley, the first--time he'll ever see them, and he needs time to come to terms with that.]

[It is hard not to feel sad when looking at pictures of people you know you are worlds apart from. Especially Max -- he gave so much to her after they were reunited, and all she could do in the end was tell the people at the funeral that she loved him. It seems so unfair, even if that is an irrational thought. Nothing is fair. Nothing, ultimately, about life and death is fair.

His question brings her out of that line of thought.]

Yes. [She nods, sniffling discreetly, for all the good it will do hiding her emotions from Sweets.] I'll do the same with mine.

[It will help when she feels pangs of loneliness later, and when the "gods" inevitably put them through something difficult in order to gain energy.]

[He can, of course, tell she's upset, and he feels guilty for being one of the causes of it, but he also knows that's ridiculous. It isn't like he asked for this to happen, and he knows she doesn't blame him, and besides he can also tell there are more reasons for her emotions than just his part in things.

But he doesn't call her out on it, instead focusing on taking the most careful pictures possible despite the difficulty of photographing a screen. But they're turning out okay, and more than good enough for him and what he wants them for.

When he and Brennan have both finished taking pictures, he looks over at her again.]

Thank you. It really... It means a lot.

[To know what happened, to get to see Daisy and Seeley, to have the peace of mind of being sure everyone is okay. It'll make everything else a lot easier.]

[Thank goodness he does not call her out on this. There is too much to digest here as is, what with their reunion and the memory of everything that has happened since the Puppeteer dressed a body in her clothes.

And yes, it means a lot to see each other again. It means so much, in fact, that she reaches out and hugs him again.]

Thank you for being the variable, Sweets.

[For shaking up their lives so everything could fall into place.]
