Event Log: Flu Season

Who: All characters
What: The event log for the Flu Season event
Where: All over the city
When: March 20th-March 30th
Warnings: Gross sneezing, sick people, and paranoia

It starts with a cough, a sneeze, a sore throat - something small and simple, easily ignored. But then your symptoms get worse. It's probably been awhile since you've been sick, that sort of thing doesn't usually happen here. You might be able to raid the shops for some tissues and tea before it gets too bad, and hopefully you've got a friend to help out until you get better. Surely it'll be over soon, right?

Until the fever sets in, and you start to understand why your friend is really there. They don't want to take care of you. They want to make sure this is the last anyone will ever see of you. They want to learn all your secrets. They want to steal your most precious possession. You know they're plotting against you, you know they're keeping something from you. What will you do to find out what it is?

Then, as the sickness fades, you realize it was all in your mind. Let's hope you didn't do or say anything too awful. But that friend of yours... they seem to have picked up your cough. Maybe you should help them out?

► This log covers March 20th-March 30th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If your paranoia ends in murder, please let us know here.

[As if the thing doesn't look scary enough, the noises it makes are even worse. Lance looks up from his injuries in time to see the Visitor stalking, but only for a pace or two before it launches toward him, and it's far too late to try to dodge.

So instead he casts the shield spell, focused less on making a large, general protective barrier and more on concentrating it right in front of the Visitor's rapidly approaching jaws. Hopefully that'll be enough to stop and maybe even stun it briefly, and Lance can figure out something to do that isn't just reacting and stalling.]

[The Visitor smashes its face straight into the shield spell, mouth open. It grinds its teeth against the magical barrier, biting uselessly at it for a few seconds, bringing its remaining front paw up to scrape at it with its claws. Some of its smaller incisors chip and break, and that hole in its mandible isn't doing it any favors.

But before it breaks its whole mouth, it finally relents with an indignant scream. It backs up a few steps, awkward on two legs that weren't meant to support it in walking, and then tries to hobble around to a different angle.]

[That's a better result than Lance had hoped for, and although it takes a lot of mental effort to tear his gaze away from the creature he has to do so. Limping backwards a few more steps, he glances around quickly to try to figure out something else he can use or somewhere else to; he doesn't think he can outrun the Visitor, even with it slowed down, due to his own injuries, so he has to figure out something else.

A collapsed building half a block away stands out to him suddenly as a possibility; it isn't completely rubble, but the front half of it has crumbled and left large pieces of stone haphazardly piled on top of each other. From where he stands he can just make out a gap that might be possible to get through--he has some practice with this sort of thing from going caving as a teenager--but be too small for the Visitor to follow him. It's not the most foolproof plan in the world, but it's the only one he has.

So he drags his gaze back toward the Visitor, continuing to back up unsteadily toward his goal, but he knows he's going to have to do something else to stun the Visitor again in order to have a chance at pulling this off. Although he'd love to use the spell he's most familiar with, that requires being close enough to touch the Visitor and he'd like to avoid that, so instead he decides to cover as much distance as possible while the creature is moving around the shield; the spell's effect isn't more than a few feet wide, so it won't take long.

But as soon as it's clear of the spell and moving toward him again, he takes the opportunity to strike preemptively; he removes his hand from where it was pressing against the wound on his side and instead stretches it out forward alongside his other hand, fingers spread out, directing magic through his hands and out his fingertips in the form of flames. Or at least that's the idea, and it does work, but not quite to the extent that it should; he's not particularly good at this spell, and the stress of the situation makes it even more difficult to concentrate on it than it already is, so the flames are weaker than they would've been if someone more practiced had cast it.]

[The Visitor... isn't sure what to make of the fire spell, honestly. No one's ever tried to fight it with that kind of thing, and it hesitates, but not out of fear. It's more like it's trying to figure out how to deal with it. It eventually decides to just... put its face in it, because it isn't particularly smart and isn't capable of being afraid.

The fire scorches the monster's skull and it pulls back before swiping its claws through it. The flames seem to eat up the black substance that makes up its body, but it doesn't stay gone for long.

All the while, it's slowly advancing as Lance retreats, staggering on its broken leg.

It snaps at the fire, but this is, of course, ineffective.]

[Well, at least it was a distraction. Sort of.

It's a little strange, honestly, because Lance likes animals, and for a moment the Visitor almost just seems like one; swiping and snapping at the fire is almost reminiscent of a dog playing with a sprinkler, only a completely messed up alternate reality version involving a skeleton and fire.

But the weirdness is not that important right now, because what's important is that the spell was not a particularly effective deterrent and if Lance is going to have time to get into the partially collapsed building he's going to have to think of something else quick. He doesn't know how many more time he can cast something, having never really tested his limits, and his injuries are definitely not helping his concentration; his leg is shaking as he tries to will it not to give out, and although adrenaline is dampening the pain he's still starting to feel it.

But he's close to the damaged building now, gaze still fixed on the Visitor as it approaches, trying to formulate another plan. He can use shield again to protect himself while actually trying to get through the rubble, but he still has to have opportunity to safely turn his back on the Visitor to even start climbing through, and that's assuming there's a 'through' at all.

So he needs to distract the Visitor again, but he's not sure how; if this were a person or something that seemed to feel pain he'd have a few dirty tricks to try, but he has to rely on sheer physical damage to deal with this creature and he's pretty out of options for that. A brief glance again at his surroundings leads him to spotting Michael, still on the ground a distance away, and for a brief moment Lance wonders if maybe something aimed at him would draw the Visitor off, but dismisses the idea immediately after; sure, it might work, but that's a line he's not going to cross.

But that--combined with the thought about dogs--does give him an idea, and it takes very little concentration or effort to try it; Lance summons a small ball of fire into his hand, and immediately tosses it off toward the side. It's too much to hope the Visitor wants to play fetch, but maybe it'll distract it for a second or two.]

[The Visitor watches the ball of fire, its massive head following it as it flies off. Lance is right to assume it would be drawn away by something aimed at Michael, and it at first assumes that's what this is. But the fire just sort of plops onto the ground somewhere, and the creature turns immediately back to Lance.

It screeches at him again, clearly annoyed, and starts advancing once more, whether or not he took that brief opportunity to book it.]

[Okay, not ideal, but he's not going to get much of a better chance and so he indeed takes the opportunity as soon as he sees the Visitor's attention following the fire; the gap in the rubble is narrow and low to the ground, so Lance has to drop down to his knee and try to shove himself through it sideways.

It's apparent immediately that he'll not only fit but that there's somewhere to actually go when he gets through it, but it's still not exactly easy to maneuver and he can't concentrate to cast a spell while trying to get through it. So that leave him open to another attack from the Visitor, for at least a few seconds, if it reacts quickly enough.]

[When it sees that Lance has gotten away somewhat, the Visitor starts to hustle. It drags itself, stumbling and hobbling but with alarming speed as it abandons its broken limb and runs three-legged, kicking up sprays of sand and dirt.

It reaches the rubble just as Lance is nearly through and slides down to ground level, snapping its jaws at his leg. Without most of its front teeth, it won't be able to hold on very well, but it does manage to graze him with its fangs, and the broken shards of its incisors probably don't feel great.

It'll bite down for as long as it can, but if Lance pulls away, he'll be able to get free.]

[Lance doesn't initially feel any pain from the fangs, although he will as soon as the situation calms a little, but he does realize that the Visitor's grabbed onto him and pulls hard in a half deliberate, half panicked reaction. He doesn't expect for it to work, and so he's almost shocked when it does and he's able to pull himself fully into the damaged building.

He scrambles backward in the small room formed by the rubble, pressing his back up against the far wall and drawing his legs up toward his chest, staying as far from the opening in the debris as he can. If the Visitor continues trying to go after him he'll try to summon enough concentration to cast the shield spell again in order to block the entrance, but he really hopes the creature will give up quickly instead. Surely he's more trouble than he's worth, right?]

[The monster jams its snout into the hole and tries snapping for something else to grab onto, but its shoulders are too big to fit far enough inside. It backs up and lowers itself onto its broken leg, and then reaches in with its good arm, raking around in the rubble and swinging wildly back and forth. It even tries to reach up and pry the larger pieces of the building loose, but without its other front leg, the leverage is too difficult.

It backs up for a few seconds, then rams itself, shoulder first, into the side of the collapsed building. When this doesn't accomplish much, it leans down to give Lance one last appraising look through the hole with its blue-light eyes. Then it throws its head back in a scream and wheels around to go back to its host.]

[It feels surreal, like he's in some sort of horror movie, and the Visitor makes various attempts to reach him, and all he can really do is huddle in the furthest corner and hope that nothing it does will be successful. If they are, he has the shield as a last resort, but it'd only buy him a few more second anyway.

So, instead, he just watches what the Visitor tries to do, somewhere between frozen in terror and just numbly calm; the only real move he makes is to cover his head when he feels the Visitor slam into the building, just in case any additional rubble falls, but it's just a showering of dust.

The screech is not welcome, because it's horrifying, but that it signals the Visitor's departure is an incredible relief. Or it would've been, anyway, if Lance were really capable of feeling such a thing at the moment, but he doesn't even truly believe it at first.

But as time passes--how much time? He isn't sure--and the Visitor doesn't return, he becomes more and more aware of what just happened and what his current situation is; his injuries are beginning to hurt again, he realizes how weak he feels, and he knows he needs to do something other than just hide in this already half-collapsed building.

Still, he can't bring himself to move for another few minutes, listening carefully to try to determine if the Visitor really is gone. Finally, he decides it is, and fights the returning creep of paranoia in order to send Kyna an emergency message.

Now he just has to wait.]
