You wake up on the 14th, and something is different. Maybe it's something small - you can't smell anything, or your hearing on one side seems to be on the fritz. Or it could be something large and impossible to miss - you've gone completely blind, or you seem to be missing a leg. You've lost something, and no matter what you do, you can't seem to fix it.
Will you ever get it back? Probably, but it's impossible to be sure. And even if you're thoroughly convinced that this is temporary, that still means you have to figure out how to live like this for the next week. Even small things can be huge difficulties. Your sense of taste doesn't seem that important, until you accidentally eat something that'll make you sick. And sure, maybe you can figure out how to live without one hand, but what about when you wake up three days from now and you've also lost your magic?
Do your best to keep yourself calm, but remember: it can always get worse.► This log covers May 14th-May 20th.
► Feel free to make your own logs, as well
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If your lost sense turns out to have been essential to your survival, please let us know here.
Trafalgar Law - closed and open both
[The sense of loss is subtle, Law definitely knows something is off but can't put his finger on what. His five senses as well as the sixth sense of haki are still intact and so are his limbs. It's not until someone at the clinic actually needs him to use his Devil Fruit ability to diagnose their own problems that it hits him.
The Room doesn't respond. He can't perform Scan to diagnose, he can't move or lift or swap objects, nothing works. It's a good thing he's properly trained in medical science or he might think he's become useless.
Stop in to the clinic to try to get a diagnosis or even treatment, if it's possible. Law will be around to assist, if grouchier than usual and slightly hesitant. He's keeping his panic on the downlow, but people he genuinely trusts may be able to coax him to talk about it. After all, finding yourself bereft of a power that should only die if you do really fucks with your head...]
May 17 closed to Michael (with cameo by Atem)
[before doing anything crazy like try to stop Lup, Law needs to perform an experiment to verify that his Devil Fruit really is gone. There's no seastone to touch, and technically no seawater either, but the still water of the temple pools should do the trick.
At least it's still hot enough that shucking down to his boxer-briefs isn't uncomfortable, though Law does so in the shadow of Sorrow's temple out of modesty. Stepping in up to his ankles doesn't do anything, so to really find the answer, he needs to submerge. One good dive puts him deep into the center of the pool.
His strength drains away immediately. It feels painfully familiar, the drag of his own body weight sinking into the water, his arms and legs too weak to even splash. It's a struggle to keep his head above water, treading or splashing toward the edge of the pool is right out. He can barely even take a breath to shout.]
Oi. Oi! Someone. Anyone. Oi! Help...
[the disembodied consciousness that may find him first won't be able to help. Hopefully someone can hear, before his panic spikes and works against him.]
May 18-20 OPEN
[Battling Lup without his ability was just dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Law hates himself for getting in over his head again, but he's not going to let a little bodily injury stop him from working.
He's back in the clinic, but with so many bandages holding him together, he's even less helpful than he was before. He can still patch up, stitch up, and offer painkillers, for patients. But, this time, Law will also need to turn to his fellow clinic staff to patch him up. Sure, he can change most of his own bandages, but he could really use a hand and probably won't ask for it. Catch him cursing his lack of Devil Fruit while he tries to get himself cleaned up and help him before he gets an infection.]

Alcohol has never actually been her drug of choice. Laudanum, that's the stuff. Serves as an emotional painkiller just as well as its physical properties. The clinic ought to have it, right? It's a common medical aid, in her time. Surely she can threaten someone into handing it over and just escape for the rest of the day.
She makes her way there, opens the door, looks around. Sees who's in and raises an eyebrow. Maybe he'll be generous. He's one of the few who has been good to her so far and even she, heartless as she is, can appreciate that.
Though... he doesn't look well. Her question is put on hold in favor of a different one.]
What happened to you?
no subject
Got into a bit of a fight. [no big, right?] You all right, Caedra-ya?
no subject
[But hold on here languages are cool and she still doesn't know much about his, outside of this place where nearly everything is translated.] ... What's with the 'ya'?
no subject
He looks mildly embarrassed that she caught that]
Oh. It's. Don't worry about it, it's a token of familiarity. [it means he doesn't dislike her, basically] Anyway. What do you need?
no subject
Hm. Well - laudanum. I imagine you have some here, right?

17th of course
He diverts his route toward the sound of the shouts instead, ignoring the part of him that wants to just go and leave it. Once he realizes who it is and sees what's happening, though, he has to fight a little harder.
His brain is telling him two distinct and very conflicting things. One, that this is someone he cares about, and he's in trouble, and Michael should help. But the other is that this person is a potential threat, someone who tried to hurt him before (but that wasn't real was it?) and as a pirate, he's definitely probably killed people before, which means he should just leave him to drown. He hesitates. Which thing does he want to do? Both, actually. But which thing is the right choice?
The fact that he has to think about it at all is, frankly, terrifying.
After a few seconds, (during which, from the outside, he just appears to be staring,) Michael shakes his head and shrugs off his jacket, tossing his glasses after it and hoping they land in the same place. He wades out into the pool, hoping he isn't too late, but then, he knows it actually takes a little while for a grown man to drown.
A grown man who is, in fact, larger than himself, but he hasn't thought that through.]
Hold on, I'm coming!
[Finally, all those stupid summers at the beach are worth something.]
skip me you guys <3
Law, Law! Stop!
「What is he doing!? Why is he willingly going into the water?! He follows him all the way, and he can't do anything, he tries to stand in his way, only to be walked through as Law goes into the deeper part of the pool. He still tries to reach him, to grab him and stop him. Nothing, he can't do nothing. He can only feel his desperation and hear his plea. Atem cannot remember the last time he felt so much despair. As he tries to take a hold of Law, he gets closer, he becomes more aggressive going into the water with him, until he ultimately longer sees him, but he sees through his eyes. He feels heavy again, he feels... He feels.
He also cannot breath. Not that he had been doing so at all for the past days but right now he needs to, and he can't, he can't, his lungs feel like burning. His legs are useless as he tries to swim back to the surface, they feel like cramping; his own desperation and Law's are more than overwhelming and he starts sinking, unable to fight it.
It's through Law's eyes that he can see a shadow above them and he jolts, he tries to reach, and by the time he does, he notices it. He cannot grasp that hand, or, more accurately, when he does, it closes around nothing. He's left Law's body, being able to see his friend sinking from his own perspective and Michael trying to reach for him.」
love it
Michael-ya...
[even his voice is too weak, thank goodness someone found him. Someone he can trust. As long as he doesn't let his nose dip under, to where he can't keep the water out any longer, he should be able to last until Michael can get to him]
guess who forgot notification tracking lmao
Michael can't see ghosts, ironically, so he has no idea that Atem was here. He actually can't see much of Law at all, either, not once he gets closer. But he can make out enough to know where he is, and to find the closest arm, which he grabs immediately. He isn't strong enough to actually pull him up out of the water, but he can get that arm up over his shoulders so that Law's head is better positioned to breathe.
And now, the problem. How the hell does he drag Law back to the edge of the pool? Swimming with another person who isn't helping is harder than it looks on tv, but at least Law is conscious, so he's not dead weight. Needless to say, though, it's kind of slow going trying to sort of swim sideways while holding onto someone else. They'll make it eventually, but hopefully Law doesn't go under in the meantime.]
scoops up
Sorry...
[breathing the apology in Michael's ear is all he can do. Slow and steady is better than going under, he's not about to complain about the pace of the rescue. The best he can do to not pull Michael under with him is to hang on and not struggle.]

May 17th
Hello? May I ask for assistance?
no subject
Margaery-ya...? What did you do?
no subject
I tripped and fell over a root. I couldn't see where I was going.
no subject
[he grabs clean cloth and antiseptic and comes over, so she doesn't have to navigate the clinic blind]
Here. Let me see it. I'm right here.
no subject
[her hands are badly scraped and there are bits of debris in the wounds]
Thank you, Law. I'm glad you're here to help me.

But he's bored and he's pretty sure he's explored every other nook and cranny this city has to offer, so... Guess it's time to check out the clinic. Maybe George will be around and they can talk music or something.
She's not, though. It's just this asshole, looking more than a little rough around the edges and struggling to rewrap some of his bandages. Great. Well, if nothing else, this ought to be an interesting story.]
You want help with that?
no subject
...ah. Actually. I wouldn't mind a third hand to pull this one around my back.
[and cover his favorite tattoo, sob]
no subject
So, past snarkfests aside, he's happy enough to help. He nods and heads over, taking the bandage to help Law fashion it how he wants. Harlan has plenty of first aid experience, but only on himself and it's been a while. He hasn't had much need for it since he learned that healing spell.
Being this close to another person is also uncomfortable, but his anxiety is already cranked up to eleven because of the event. A little close proximity bandaging certainly isn't helping, but at this point? Whatever.]
What happened?
no subject
Delusions of grandeur. Went after someone who might have been another kind of demon while underpowered.
[ugh it was the dumbest fight, he's still kicking himself for taking on magical beings without his ability]
no subject
Underpowered? Don't tell me you went after Caedra, dude.

Law, did anybody ever tell you that tired old joke about how the physician who treats himself has a fool for a patient? [ He speaks gently, and he has a smile for his pirate friend. ]
no subject
[if there's ever been a doctor who's his own worst patient, it's Law]
...you seem to be managing well, Curufin-ya. You're all right?
no subject
I'm physically intact. Nightmares, is all. [ That's putting it mildly. Luckily, the granddaddy-of-all-bad-dreams only lasted one night. Then he regained his ability to keep others out of his dreams. ]
no subject
Uh. Just put a finger here, on my shoulder. Hold that down. [it's not as bad as it was yesterday but a few extra digits in the mix can't hurt]
