Event Log: The Beach Episode

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the transition to our new planet!
Where: The city, which has now been fragmented onto four separate islands.
When: May 27th-June 10th
Warnings: Surf's up! If by 'surf', you mean separation from your friends, weird sea creatures, and cold rainfall.

The sun and the sand and a drink in your hand- well, it all sounded pretty nice when you voted for the island planet, but ultimately what you're getting is a bit less glamorous.

The transition takes place instantaneously, with very little noteworthy shakeup, though those of you who are particularly in-tune with the supernatural may feel a bit dizzied or nauseated by the sudden movement. And that's exactly what it is: for those of you who are outside, the change is fairly noticeable, as in the span of a single blink, what used to be miles of desert is now rocky ocean. The city is simply in one place one moment, and then somewhere entirely new a second later.

And that somewhere new is exciting! The islands have plenty of landscape to explore and weather conditions to adjust to, fish to catch, and- wait, how do you get to the other islands? What if your friends or your home or the bar is on these other islands? Enjoy having to figure out who is where and how you're going to get by with only a small fraction of the city to work off of- hopefully those boats will come sooner rather than later...

► This log covers May 27th-June 10th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you drown or get eaten by an alien shark, let us know here.

"Right - well."

The look she gives him is skeptical, to say the least. Buying luxuries, sure, that's a reasonable thing to do. No world domination involved, but she knows the joys of a life full of everything one desires. She can't blame him for wanting that also. How he gets from that to... what, breaking people's phones? That just sounds like general mischief. Perhaps he's a bit dense. Quite a lot of humans seem to be.

"Your world would be wholly unprepared for those particular infractions, wouldn't it. Sounds like fun. I know that there's a rumor that when people go home they forget everything that happened here, but that only applies to the ones who then come back again." Not that she expects this one to actually be able to learn here how to do the things it sounds like he wants to do. Illusions are simple but he doesn't seem likely to catch on quickly.

[ Maglor shakes his head sympathetically ] You might get by, if you were careful, and if you were not training in the blade! But you are, and that, I fear, needs the extra boost of meat.

[He shakes some of the water off his clothes like a dog would before he joins Lance under the tree. There's a contradiction in his body language, the closed-off stance of someone who doesn't want to interact with people, but mixed in with the expression who doesn't get the chance to just have a normal conversation very often.]

Water. All the morons here had to vote for water.

[Someone's just a touch grumpy about all this wet stuff around.]

If he knew what she was thinking, maybe he could claim that seeming dense was some kind of defense mechanism, and the reason that people usually overlook him. But it's not exactly something he does on purpose, so that probably wouldn't be a great excuse.

"It's not just a rumor." Michael hasn't been home, he hasn't forgotten anything himself, but he knows people who have. And it was Rough. "I mean, I guess technically we can't prove that people who stay gone don't remember, but given what we do know, it seems like a pretty good guess. I'd say it's just the brain shielding itself from some kind of cognitive dissonance, like the whole alien abduction hypnosis theory? Actually, you might not know what that is. It's not important. Anyway, it happens to people who know about other worlds to begin with, so that's probably not it."

I will do so! I should try and track them down, I think. I don't know if any of them are on this island.

"Mm, to a degree." He knows how to sail, as he knows how to do most things to some level of competency. His fingertips tap twice more, then he pushes himself away from the desk to move to a window instead. One thumb nail finds its way to his teeth to be pinched lightly between them, but not quite bitten.

"I dislike all this waiting," he mutters, a small frown drawing a line between his eyebrows. "The uncertainty of what we might find lacking next. It's vexing."

[It's going to be very inconvenient to have to take a boat to every island. Building bridges wouldn't be possible across such distances, with the resources that they have at their disposal.]

A little choppy. [He tells her, following the idle path she takes with no particular destination in mind.]

But Curufin is a competent sailor.

Good. She's glad that part wasn't important because she had no idea what he had just tried to tell her. She's pinpointed this one as one of those nerdy academics, though, just now, and it explains a lot. He's not dense, he's just unable to see past a very narrow range of focus. It's a creativity problem, not an intelligence problem. At least, according to her snap judgment of someone she's only just barely met.

She shakes her head. "No, I travel between planes frequently, normally. I've never forgotten any part of the experience," she says, leaving out of course the part where she did forget most of her human life. But, details. That's just one of the usual side-effects of being reincarnated in the Abyss, from what she's learned since.

"Which means the limitation on memory is specific to this place. The suiralukki cause it, or the Door, perhaps." She would bet on the Door, if only because those creatures who pretend to be gods seem too incompetent to be able to pull off such a thing as wiping the memories of all who witnessed their location - even if that would be a smart thing to do.

"Orchard's on the eastern island." Law thumbs over his shoulder at the other landmass in the near distance. They're closer to the west at the moment. "I suppose I could take a detour to drop you off. Or, if you want to come with me to the west, we can walk to the point where the two islands are closest and I can send you over."

See, he can be helpful when he wants to be. Besides, Rey's good people and more booze is best. The only thing he can't do, unless she calls him on the phone, is get her back to the Speakeasy.

If you can't shape yourself to your environment, change the environment. [That doesn't always mean the weather, and his very tone implies that he means far more than simply that.]

But we don't always get those options afforded to us. I imagine the rain will hold the same dullness, after a while.

[Being trapped in the same place is aggravating, to put a word to it, but one would be hard-pressed to realise he feels quite that strongly.] There's little else that way than more of where you've come from, if you were wondering.

[ Small, wry laugh. ] That's a pretty good description of our reality here. I was born in a city that was larger than Hadriel by at least a couple of tens of thousands of people, but it was impossible to avoid anyone there, either.

[ Oh, but who doesn't lie about matters in which deep emotion is involved? It's a very human thing to do.]

Ouch. You came through Customs? I understand the concept. Once my brothers and I had established our own lands, I took over a lot of the administrative work. I appointed a few of my soldiers to inspect any goods that came to us up the rivers by boat or across the hills by cart. No one paid taxes on trade goods, but it was a good idea to make sure that what we received was what we had paid for. Is your Customs anything like that?

"Good thing you have that skill, then. Unless somebody thinks up a better idea for island-to-island transport, we're stuck with whatever boats we can find or build. Of course, there are a few people who have the ability to move instantaneously from one point to another, without traversing the intervening space. But they're going to be inundated with requests, and I do not like to bother them anyway."

Curufin watches Ignis' restless movements. He thinks of offering to make another pot of coffee, but then, more bad coffee is probably not a good remedy for the Hadriel jitters.

"It is vexing, isn't it? I don't like the uncertainty, either. But are you worried about anything in particular?"

[she groans and buries her face in her hands briefly] I'm fucked. That's all there is to it.

[but does everyone habitually lie about their identity?]

Yeah, that's pretty much it. They ask you if you have anything to declare that's worth something and if you don't, they stamp your passport and you're on your way.

I threw away a fish because of its color and odor, but then I ate one that seemed perfectly healthy and I got sick. Maybe that one simply contained a toxin of its own, not one that was caused by micro-organisms.

[ He casts an eye in that same direction, the view between the islands, where the distant ocean lies beyond them. There is a little something distant in his eyes for a moment, as he remembers the seas of his own world. ] Big fish that would be edible if we could catch them, or simply big creatures that might or might not be things we'd want to hunt?
hot_mes: (talking)

[personal profile] hot_mes 2018-06-13 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. If it was something that made you ill after ingestion, and yet passed, it isn't likely a poisonous compound. True poisons need to be cleansed or countered.

[not that he can tell for sure, just on description, but Law is capable of removing poisons from himself or others should they be ingested. So, eating a poisonous fish isn't as dangerous for his tests as it is others]

Can't tell that from here, just with my senses. I can only sense their basic size and power level. They may be dangerous or not, who can say?
so_dark_a_road: (flickers of light)

[personal profile] so_dark_a_road 2018-06-13 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Curufin laughs. "I wouldn't be at all surprised if the island sinks! I'm sure the gods would get a wonderful feast out of that, and it wouldn't bother them a bit if some people drowned. They'd just revive them in Hope's temple, or open the Door and get replacements."

The darkness in Curufin's soul is ancient. He himself believes that he was born with a fair portion of the dark element and only after he grew up did he add to it by committing actual crimes. But he's gone to war with beings that are far worse than he ever was, and he knows well how to defend himself against the arcane. His soul would not be easy pickings. However, he has no sense of who Leo is, only that a stranger is showing interest in his boat and an interest in conversation.

"My name's Curufin, by the way."

[ He looks over the spread-out linens. ]

Let's go for fourteen by eighteen feet. If you sew it together in say, eight vertical sections, that ought to work. It'll make the sail stronger, too, to have so many vertical seams.
so_dark_a_road: (the flaming circle of our days)

Maybe not. It pays to have friends here, and to be a good friend to whoever offers you the gift of friendship. It is a bulwark against the less savory aspects of Hadriel.

[ Maybe not everyone lies about their identity, but those who do pretty often have good reasons. Survival reasons. ]

And so you were on your way. . . out the door and through the Hadriel Door! What a day.
