Event Log: The Beach Episode

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the transition to our new planet!
Where: The city, which has now been fragmented onto four separate islands.
When: May 27th-June 10th
Warnings: Surf's up! If by 'surf', you mean separation from your friends, weird sea creatures, and cold rainfall.

The sun and the sand and a drink in your hand- well, it all sounded pretty nice when you voted for the island planet, but ultimately what you're getting is a bit less glamorous.

The transition takes place instantaneously, with very little noteworthy shakeup, though those of you who are particularly in-tune with the supernatural may feel a bit dizzied or nauseated by the sudden movement. And that's exactly what it is: for those of you who are outside, the change is fairly noticeable, as in the span of a single blink, what used to be miles of desert is now rocky ocean. The city is simply in one place one moment, and then somewhere entirely new a second later.

And that somewhere new is exciting! The islands have plenty of landscape to explore and weather conditions to adjust to, fish to catch, and- wait, how do you get to the other islands? What if your friends or your home or the bar is on these other islands? Enjoy having to figure out who is where and how you're going to get by with only a small fraction of the city to work off of- hopefully those boats will come sooner rather than later...

► This log covers May 27th-June 10th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you drown or get eaten by an alien shark, let us know here.

[No, nothing unreasonable at all.

Ah, but there's a soft relief, like an elastic band snapping when she takes his hand so tightly. The silence is full of everything they don't say, but right now, how much of it really needs to be said?

He pulls her lightly to his side, then turns to wrap his free arm around her. Kate is a force to be reckoned with and needs no protection, but Ignis feels the need to guard something in her that is perhaps a little more vulnerable to bruising.

'I don't-- want to see you hurt.'
'I know. I don't want you to have to see that, either.'

Lightly, he tucks his chin against the top of her head and closes his eyes for a moment. It's a strange thing, to feel something pulling him off the paths he would have so easily run headlong down only six months before. How is it that so short a time can make a person so important?
]

We can discuss it, but let's not fight.

[It's difficult to discuss, but fighting over it will get them nowhere.]

[He glances at her, picking up on the change in mood. Adam's always been observant about that kind of thing - he's had to be. But he doesn't press it, because he doesn't know why it happened. Just that maybe that was the wrong question somehow.]

That's a nice thought. Or a bad one, I guess, depending on how much you like the world you're in. I wouldn't have minded a portal when I was at home. Sometimes, anyway.

[Not that it was all bad. But a lot of it was.]

It's interesting to think about.

And we should invite everyone! Sansa and Jon and Daenerys and all of your kin. Jon and Daenerys especially haven't had the chance to get to know all of you. [she smiles and looks quite pleased with herself] ...so, let's make that chance.

[What a lucky gal she is.]

Doesn't look like you need their help. [She squats by the board, running her hand over it.] I'm not an expert in bespoke surfboards, but this looks like a good start. Can I try it sometime once it's done?

It would be good to meet your family.

[ Maglor agrees ]

Hopefully in a few nights?

"You mean like taking the fight to the Null? It's been suggested before and, yeah, they weren't that into it."

Of course, unless they do grab an army of mages or whatever, they'd be kinda screwed going up against them on their turf.

"At the end of the day, I think they're just scared. All of their choices seem to be playing it safe. Not saying that's a good thing, but it is what it is."

"It's boring," she sighs. "It's as if they don't even want to find out how to use their own tool better. The Door has so much potential and yet they still don't know how to use it, after - how long? Years, I've heard, right?"

As if being stuck here wasn't enough. Being imprisoned by creatures who run scared from a fight and who try to maintain things the way they are instead of taking risks just makes her endlessly miserable. If she were in their position there would be so many things she would do differently.

"But - I'm just complaining now. I know there's nothing more about it that you can do either." Naturally, given he's just some nonmagical human. He may as well be an insect.

[personal profile] kingforboth 2018-06-21 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Possible. But it seems equally effortless to wait for the Door to just bring in new people. It depends on their priorities and how demanding they see us currently. There's always the possibility that new prisoners will be less. Or more. It's a gamble."

It depended on how currently hungry these beings were and their own individual priorities. As far as Kelson was concerned at least.
kingforboth: (wtf did loris do now?)

[personal profile] kingforboth 2018-06-21 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you did the best you could under the circumstances, although they do sound terribly familiar. I do hope that means that one day your land will be stabalized.

[Gwynedd was certainly doing better than Westeros was at the moment. Hopefully it wouldn't take 200 years to sort them out and Daenerys would do her job well.]

That's horrid and unnatural and...

[Kelson shivered, remembering the spell placed on his father's corpse, tying his soul. He wouldn't wish that on anyone. That was very dark magic.]

[He'll just continue to grin, and then give him a little wink before breezing right by.]

The best revenge is to live well. Trrrrrust me, I have all sorts of great gems of advice like this. Taako originals.

[None of them are originals. He's taking them all from other people. But also, no one can stop him.]

If they can't get to you, they're just left to squirm with it.

"I doubt we have the resources to build bridges of that size, even if we were given the time." That kind of distance... they'd need deep foundations, they'd need to be able to stand against the curiosity of whatever creatures lurked in the deep water below, and they'd need to be able to stand against tides and potential storms. It would be a logistical nightmare.

But Curufin is right. Such a thing would be next to pointless busywork if they are to be moved again. "Perhaps we'd be better spending our time building a few piers," he suggests. Somewhere more secure to board and disembark the boats that will no doubt become a staple, and somewhere safe to moor them.

At the mention of Maglor, he briefly hesitates, but nods. "I have. We had a small disagreement over his handling of the demon, but I saw no point in trying to debate it further."

They would never agree over Maglor's approach to that particular situation.

I didn't end up with him.

[Although she kind of did, just not really.

There is a huff, debating how to respond to that. On the surface, most of them don't work together. They are different- different backgrounds, different mentalities, just, really different.

But, they are family. All of them.]

What do you actually know about him?

( Fighting, in some ways, is easy. It requires less thought to give into anger, far less vulnerability to push people away than to let them in.

It's also exhausting. The constant effort to continue layering walls, to rebuild them when something cracks them. The alarm that sounds every time a piece of information slips out or the veneer slips to let out a smile or a laugh. Habit, more than anything, stiffens muscles under his touch when he pulls her close, when his arm wraps around her like it's trying to keep a million things away.

She's still, all held breath and eyes sliding shut when the warmth of his body, the steady thud of his pulse, presses against her cheek. Quiet and unmoving, like water in a jar, all held in place and together by one simple thing.
)

... Alright.

( Fighting is easier, but fighting exhausts everyone eventually. )

They're such wonderful people. And not a Lannister amongst them.

Where should we have it? Along the shore where there are no rocks? The park? The orchard?

"Some of the resources are available, depending on what sort of bridge we intended to make. There is plenty of rock to quarry and crush up for cement. But the upper and understructure should include steel, I would think. That presents some problems in terms of quantity, unless we mean to make a deal with the gods. I'd rather not rely on them as suppliers. I think it is better to make use of the methods and materials we have now, and to design projects that will serve us and can be finished in a relatively short period of time. Thus, the boats."

He nods in complete agreement. "A pier on every island would be a very good idea! We can certainly do that. I know at least a few other people with carpentry skills and strong backs, and I'm sure that more can be recruited."

And in regards to Maglor: "I hope that this disagreement has not put a damper on your friendship. Demon problems may come and go, but friends may last a long time."

"I guess so, but I don't think it's a gamble they'll take. There's too much uncertainty. They already have us, they know how we'll react." So why risk new people who may or may not be what they need? It couldn't be that hard to give them some water.

"We'll be alright. Or as alright as this place gets."

"Sunai is the type of being you are, then. You sound a little like the Reapers I've spoken with here, except that taking souls off to paradise or wherever doesn't seem to be your function." He smiles. Yes, Curufin knows what his own soul looks like, or at least, what it feels like. It is a strange feeling to be in the company of someone else who can see that, too.

"Death does come as a surprise, doesn't it? And whatever comes after? -- another set of surprises! Oh, and if you have only humans and monsters in your world -- what is the purpose of the other two, the Corsai and the Malchai?"

Another smile. "Then you are a musician? So am I. Does it require a particular piece of music to immobilize your unwary prey, or can it be any music?" Curufin isn't disturbed. He knows the uses of music as enchantment, and he has a voice that can project a vision when he wants it to, in either speech or song. He doesn't fear the power of another who has such a skill, albeit a being from another world, one who eats souls. Curufin's would be one hell of a hard soul to enthrall or extract; he counts on this. "But it is good to hear that you make exceptions. Apparently, for you kind as well as mine, the need for family tops other concerns?"

Yes. I did the best I could. Charitable works and whatnot. Matters of policy, I was blocked by Cersei's council every time.

[Daenerys is a Targaryen, the line that united the Seven Kingdoms in the first place. the Tyrells fought on the Targaryen side during Robert's Rebellion. and Daenerys was born to rule, proving herself in Essos before returning to the land of her birth]

It was all of that and more. It had a sword that could cleave a horse's neck straight through. Even without its sword, it was strong enough to crush a man's skull with his hand. And it was utterly Cersei's creature.

[tying his soul? that sounds very unpleasant]

There is only so much you can do without the support of those around you, especially if your council is strong, and the king is not. Or unable to act. It happened in Gwynedd hundreds of years ago, if rumors are to be believed. Kings drugged senseless cannot argue with their council lords.

[Kelson shook his head.]

The creature sounds vile. I hope it was put down.
