Event Log: The Beach Episode

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the transition to our new planet!
Where: The city, which has now been fragmented onto four separate islands.
When: May 27th-June 10th
Warnings: Surf's up! If by 'surf', you mean separation from your friends, weird sea creatures, and cold rainfall.

The sun and the sand and a drink in your hand- well, it all sounded pretty nice when you voted for the island planet, but ultimately what you're getting is a bit less glamorous.

The transition takes place instantaneously, with very little noteworthy shakeup, though those of you who are particularly in-tune with the supernatural may feel a bit dizzied or nauseated by the sudden movement. And that's exactly what it is: for those of you who are outside, the change is fairly noticeable, as in the span of a single blink, what used to be miles of desert is now rocky ocean. The city is simply in one place one moment, and then somewhere entirely new a second later.

And that somewhere new is exciting! The islands have plenty of landscape to explore and weather conditions to adjust to, fish to catch, and- wait, how do you get to the other islands? What if your friends or your home or the bar is on these other islands? Enjoy having to figure out who is where and how you're going to get by with only a small fraction of the city to work off of- hopefully those boats will come sooner rather than later...

Mokuba Kaiba | North Island | OTA

[After the shift happens, Mokuba has a mild moment of panic, calling his brother immediately to make sure he's still here. Once he's established that Seto is just on a different island though, that worry turns into mostly just feeling bummed. Who knows how long it will take for him to find a way to get to Seto's lab or for Seto to get back to the apartment. Maybe Hiryu could carry him...

Mokuba isn't worried about being left on his own though. He's been through this before so he does what he's always done whenever he's showed up in a new place - go exploring. His three-headed robodragon is always at his side, and Mokuba is very glad the companion is waterproof, otherwise this would probably be very problematic.

The eleven-year-old can most often be found sitting near a cliff, looking out at the sea and the other islands beyond with a wistful and sometimes solemn expression. It reminds him of being in Medietas with Noa what with the islands there, and it also brings back the memory of standing on the cliffside in the virtual world when Noa was their enemy instead. He does remember the feeling of slipping over the edge and almost falling to his possible death if not for Seto grabbing him at the last moment, so he makes sure not to sit right up on the edge at least, a good few feet back. He's confident Hiryu would at least grab him and slow his fall before he hit the water but he'd rather not chance it.]

[ Curufin is working on the boats as usual, under the eaves of the Park's woods, in the boatbuilding shed he put up as soon as he arrived. He takes breaks occasionally to come down to the cliffs and fish. He arrives now, fishing pole and basket in hand, and finds this very young man sitting near the cliff's edge. ]

Hello? Are you all right? [ Calm voice, concerned. ]

[Mokuba lifts his head up and blinks at this newcomer for a moment, coming out of his thoughts as he registers he just asked him a question.] Huh...? Oh. Yeah. [He adds in a light smile of reassurance.] I'm okay. Just thinking.

[ Hopefully he really is all right. Curufin's world was one in which there were a lot of orphans of war, and he was accustomed to finding them safe places to go. (Or as safe as any place was, in those days. ) ]

Are you here by yourself, or do you have family or friends? [ He nods at the robodragon. ] I see you are not entirely alone, since it seems you have a companion.

My brother's stuck on one of the other islands. [Hence why he's looking bummed.] But I've got Hiryu here so I'm not alone. I can take care of myself. [He's gotten fairly used to it, sadly.]

Do you know which island your brother is on? I can take you there, as soon as the boat is finished. But it's good you have Hiryu for company. Are you managing to find food? There is some at the Firehouse and at Guard HQ and in a few other places here. I can show you. [ Because a kid shouldn't have to fend for himself! ]

[Mokuba gives a nod and says which island Seto is on, even though the player forgot which one exactly, whoops. At the mentioned of a boat, he perks up.] You're building a boat? [He waves a hand in a 'no big deal' way about the other stuff though.] I can manage food.

[ Curufin's player is having the devil of a time keeping track of who is where, so no problem. XD

Curufin smiles. ]

If you're sure. [ But the Elf is going to make sure the kid gets a square meal today, at least. ] Do you want to share my lunch with me, though? I brought more than enough. [ He pulls a package out of his satchel, which turns out to be sandwiches. He offers one to Mokuba. ]

Yes, I'm building a boat. It's not very far from here. If you look that way, you can see the shed. [ He turns and gestures away from the shoreline and along a line of trees that begin to the south and continue out of sight. Under the eaves of these trees, there is a wooden building with stacks of lumber around it. ] That's my boat-building shed. I've got one in progress and I'm working on the plans for another.

Do you like boats? My name is Curufin Fëanorion, by the way.

[For as much as he'll insist he can feed himself, he's also not going to pass up free food if it's handed to him. He takes the sandwich with a thanks and immediately digs in, stopping every so often in between bites to reply.]

What kind of a boat are you building? I've been on them before, but they're not the kind you can make in just a few days by yourself.

I'm Mokuba Kaiba. And this is Hiryu.

[ Curufin smiles when he sees the sandwich is appreciated; he's pleased if he can help in any way, even with so simple a thing as food. ]

It's a twenty-foot, flat-bottomed both with a single mast and a square sail. Oars and rowlocks in case of no wind. I've used the traditional shipbuilding methods of the Elvish people, since those were developed for northern waters and turbulent seas. A long, relatively narrow boat breasts the waves easily and is simple to handle. Carries as many as six people plus baggage. Later, I'll make a larger boat, but right now, this is the type we need. I'm an Elf, so I don't really need to sleep, and I can work literally around the clock. Fourteen days' worth of work in seven days, and I'll be ready to raise the sail.

What kind of boat have you been on before?

[He doesn't know much about sailing and boats, but he's able to follow along enough he understands the basics of what he's talking about.]

Oh, boats that are a lot bigger than 20 feet, like a cruise ship. Or a yacht. But I've been in a rowboat before. That sounds like more what you're doing.

A cruise ship or a yacht? Those do sound large. Did you travel much?

A rowboat would be small and have no sail, and be used for lakes, rivers, and streams. Or possibly it would be carried on a large ship and used to ferry people from the ship to the land, when the ship is anchored offshore. My boat is meant to be sailed on the open ocean. Rowing is a last resort, but yes, we'd row if we had to.

[ Looking curiously at the robodragon. ] How did you and Hiryu come to be companions?

Not a lot but I've been to other places and countries before, for business things.

Hiryu and I... This isn't the first place I've been to that wasn't my universe. It's happened to me three times now. The first place could be as dangerous as it can be here, and I was on my own, so someone built Hiryu to help me stay safe.

You were in some kind of business? That must have been interesting. [ Mokuba's a kid, but that doesn't matter. Curufin was quite a competent metalsmith before he reached adolescence, and a master in the field before he was grown. Children practicing the crafts, business, or a profession doesn't seem strange to him. ]

You've lived in three worlds other than your own? You have me beat, then. This is only my second. That was kind of that person, whoever it was, to build you a companion and protector. Hiryu looks a bit like the dragons in my world. Can he do dragon things like shoot fire out of his mouth?

[This is as close as Leo's likely to get to the water. He hates and fears the ocean with a passion, since it's one of the few ways to kill the near-invulnerable monster. He sees a kid staring out at a cliff's edge and it makes him stop. He hasn't seen any kids since last being in Reims before coming here.]

You look like someone with something on your mind.

[He's generally a lot nicer to kids than to adults. Most kids have pure souls and bring out the protective older-brother instinct he has. Leo looks just like any other human being, just ridiculously good-looking, as all Sunai monsters are. It's easier to attract prey when people let their guard down and they tend to do that around those who are good-looking.]

[Mokuba glances over at the person talking, his robodragon Hiryu bringing itself up into a more defensive position just in case.]

I was just trying to think of a way to get to one of the other islands. [He gives a little shrug.]

Why do you need to get to the other islands?

[He'll need to eventually get to one of the other islands himself to visit Hope's temple, but Leo really doesn't want to think about that right now. In fact, he'd be fine thinking about it never. Avoidance is a fine technique.]

My brother's on a different one. [He'll be fine on his own but still. It's not fun being separated again.]

[That's pretty much an instant way to gain Leo's sympathies. He thinks about August, his little brother still at home, and Seth, the older adopted brother he has here. He sits down beside Mokuba.]

You're handling it a lot better than I would. If I was separated from one of my brothers, I'd be going crazy.

[Mokuba gives a wry smile ever so slightly.] This... isn't the first time we've been separated. Sort of. It's complicated and the story would probably take awhile to tell. But this is a lot better than some of the other times.

Seems like we have nothing but time if you want to tell it.

[He glances at the robodragon. It's a curious-looking thing, but he's seen stranger in his time both in Reims and here.]

Well... You know how people have been dragged here from their own worlds? And not everyone is from the same one? I've been to two other places that did the same thing before I was brought here, places where people get taken from their worlds.

[Leo nods. He gets it.]

Sounds familiar. I was in a place where you couldn't make noise or monsters would kill you before I ended up here.
