Event Log: The Beach Episode

Who: Everyone!
What: The event log for the transition to our new planet!
Where: The city, which has now been fragmented onto four separate islands.
When: May 27th-June 10th
Warnings: Surf's up! If by 'surf', you mean separation from your friends, weird sea creatures, and cold rainfall.

The sun and the sand and a drink in your hand- well, it all sounded pretty nice when you voted for the island planet, but ultimately what you're getting is a bit less glamorous.

The transition takes place instantaneously, with very little noteworthy shakeup, though those of you who are particularly in-tune with the supernatural may feel a bit dizzied or nauseated by the sudden movement. And that's exactly what it is: for those of you who are outside, the change is fairly noticeable, as in the span of a single blink, what used to be miles of desert is now rocky ocean. The city is simply in one place one moment, and then somewhere entirely new a second later.

And that somewhere new is exciting! The islands have plenty of landscape to explore and weather conditions to adjust to, fish to catch, and- wait, how do you get to the other islands? What if your friends or your home or the bar is on these other islands? Enjoy having to figure out who is where and how you're going to get by with only a small fraction of the city to work off of- hopefully those boats will come sooner rather than later...

► This log covers May 27th-June 10th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► Please tag headers of threads with content warnings where they apply
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!
► If you drown or get eaten by an alien shark, let us know here.

It was times like these Leo was glad he's found someone he could trust as explicitly as he did Seth. He was always reluctant to speak of his weaknesses, afraid they might be used against him. But he knew Seth would never do that. He looked at him when Seth made him look up.

"I don't like water in general, which I think comes from being made of fire," he confessed. It was an elemental thing or so Leo had always guessed. As always, he'd never fully understood his powers, since they hadn't come with instructions.

"But what's hard is that I'm really dense in human form. Comes from being invulnerable I guess. So I can't swim, and if the water is too deep, I just sink right down to the bottom. It's one of the only ways to kill me." So there was a very good reason Leo wanted to stay away as far as possible from the ocean.

He nodded along as Leo explained. Concern never left his eyes, knowing what dread and fear both looked and felt like. Seth woke up in a sweat from time to time from the he nightmares collected over the years. It made sense what Leo confessed. Seth was relatively sure the kid had been rained on and was still standing so it wasn't exactly a fear of water but open water.

"Yeah, it can't be good for your smoke stack." Maybe not the sweetest of words but Seth uttered them in understanding. Hands that had clasped the Sunai's face moved down to hold his shoulders continuing to offer support. "No goin' by the water unless you're with me or Margo."

Calling Leo 'kid' was one thing, Seth wasn't treating him like a five year old though his words could be construed that way. They were uttered with conviction. He started to use his hands when he spoke, obviously animated with the problem before him. "I'll look for a boat but we also gotta see how you do with the water." A hand spread over his adopted brother's chest.

"No more than up to your waist. We stop as soon as you say stop. Just enough in so we can test if Margo can use a spell to keep you from sinkin', just in case. --I'll be with you the whole time, Buddy. I won't let anythin' happen to you." Seth knew he was asking a lot but it was equally worrisome to think of the possibility of more water around them and not being able to save Leo.

At home, Leo was always required to be the strong one. His older sister was too scattered to function properly, a right little Ophelia, and his younger brother didn't have what it took to help run the task force. That was a hard task to put on anyone, especially someone who barely understood his own emotions half the time anyway. It was something of a relief

Leo looked a lot like a cat that had just been grabbed by its owner and was about to be tossed in a bathtub when Seth suggested he go stand in the ocean. He flopped back dow and stared at the ceiling, one arm behind his head, groaning softly. "You're lucky I trust you." There's no one else he'd be willing to do what Seth was saying they should attempt.

Thoughts of ending up underwater and slowly drowning kept filling his head. He pushed the images away. He clasped the hand Seth still had on his chest. "I'll do it. I don't like and if I die I'm going to spend the entire time drowning blaming you, but I'll do it." Really, he's rather touched that anyone would put forth the effort for himself.

"Atta boy," Seth uttered affectionately with a pat at Leo's cheek. "Nobody's dyin'. Just a little test to see if we can get you across water or if we've gotta shack up permanently on a boat."

No, Seth hadn't forgotten the fact that Leo needed souls to survived. Between the couple, they could easily manage to find food for the sunai monster. Seth knew Margo wouldn't even think twice. He also had a few tricks up his sleeve on helping out his adopted younger brother. Kind of hokey but couldn't hurt to try rather than having a hand in murdering people.

"C'mon... Let's go see what we're dealin' with. Might not even be water."

He didn't want Leo to back pedal and was convinced that just bringing him to the water's edge was better than acting like it didn't exist. Seth got up and looked to Leo expectantly.

Leo had been thinking much on the subject of eating recently. Thanks to his deal with Hope, he wasn't going to starve, but he also wasn't sure if that would be enough to keep him from losing control eventually. There was a difference between getting food and actively hunting. He rather missed doing the latter, especially when he was surrounded by sinners here.

"What, now?" When Seth just kept looking at him, he reluctantly got up, dragging his feet towards the door. He could fight with Seth on this, but he had a feeling he'd be talked into it in the end.

"It's definitely water. I wouldn't be like this if it was chocolate pudding out there." Now why couldn't the gods have sent them some place like that? It would be bizarre, but everyone would still be happy. No one could be unhappy with an ocean full of pudding outside their door.

There was a motion to come along and follow when Leo asked 'what now'. Seth wasn't dressed as he would usually to go out, finding it more important to strike while the iron was hot --in this case, while the Sunai was agreeable. Besides, they were going to stand in water so minimal clothing seemed for the best.

He gave a nod, acknowledging Leo. "I get that but maybe it won't have the same affect water had on you before. I'm gonna walk in with you. We go in about waist deep and if it doesn't feel any different, we walk right back out." Seth slipped an arm around Leo's shoulders in an effort to provide support and keep ushering him along.

It wasn't the longest walk but neither was it twenty steps. Seth decided to keep talking and not let his adopted brother dwell on the situation. "If a battleship can float, we'll find a way for you to stay above water, Buddy. Don't you worry. Or find a way to get you over water without ever bein' on it. ...I always wanted to learn to fly a plane." He grinned at Leo then looked ahead.

Leo reluctantly dragged his feet out the door. Just because he'd agreed to do this didn't mean he was going to be happy about it at all. He was going to spend the entire time heading towards the water complaining.

"And when this doesn't work, and I punch you in the face after freaking out, you can blame no one but yourself for this," Leo said sourly. He was not happy about doing this in the slightest and the thought of just going back in the house to sit back down on the couch in the living room was a tempting one. After all, it's not like Seth could make him move unless he actually wanted to.

The absurd thought of Seth driving a plane temporarily took his mind off of things. "A plane? Where are you going to find a plane around here?" But he didn't doubt that where there was a will, there was a way. Either he'd find someone who could build one or he'd ask one of the gods to help make one.
darknstormy: (talk shit)

[personal profile] darknstormy 2018-06-19 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"You doubt me?" he quipped in response to being asked where to find a plane. Seth might not have ever said right out that he was a thief but there were enough conversations to allude to it. Or maybe it had been directly admitted to. The only thing on his mind at the moment was how to not let Leo die.

He hadn't missed the kid threatening to punch in his face. If he did, he did. It wouldn't be the first or the last that someone in the role of a sibling throttled him. However, Seth mostly didn't worry about it because he doubted it happening. There was no way he'd let Leo drown. Period.

Yet there would be no talk of that as they neared the water's edge. "What, you think you're the only one around with a fear of water? Shit's been around for as long as life's existed. I'm sure if there isn't already a plane around, one's in the works. But I've got a feelin' there's already one. Just a matter of lookin' for it."

There would be a catch, Seth was sure of that. An airplane was used for travel and if so called gods brought them here for their use then escape wouldn't be as simple as hopping in a plane and taking off. They'd no doubt at least allow one around to prevent losing a creature they obviously needed or wouldn't have brought here.

The flat look Leo gave Seth should have told him exactly what kind of doubts he was thinking. It wasn't like he didn't think Seth could find a plane if he really wanted to. It was just the means of how such a thing was going to occur that he was a little skeptical about.

Still, a plane would solve a lot of problems in getting to the other islands. He was going to eventually need to visit Hope's temple after all to get the souls he needed to survive.

Leo took off his shoes, setting them farther up on the shoreline when they reached the beach. He stopped as soon as he reached the water's edge. He was going to need some pushing and shoving to get him to go further in. "Most people can at least dog paddle to float instead of sinking like a literal rock." He looked a touch like an unhappy cat faced with a bathtub.

[personal profile] darknstormy 2018-06-24 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Seth had no shoes to take off, having run out of his room to see what the hell was wrong with Leo. Yet he took off his jeans and stood in the tank top and boxers next to Leo's shoes.

"Yeah well, you ain't most people. Hell, I ain't most people," he uttered back while grabbing Leo by his wrist and pulling him into the water. "We can work on doggy paddlin' or just kickin' your feet when I figure out how to make you float. For right now, we're just seein' if this water works like the water you were used to. Maybe it's like the Dead Sea. I hear half ton fat asses can float in that."

No tact but hopefully Leo got the point he was trying to make. Seth remembered Richie once spewing that fun fact. He might have gotten which sea it was wrong, but there was some body of water on Earth that wasn't like all the rest. He tugged Leo swearing that the kid was digging his heels into the sand instead of walking in.
stealyoursoul: (It could never be wrong)

[personal profile] stealyoursoul 2018-06-24 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
If Seth noticed, Leo's feet were already sinking pretty far into the sand, more than a normal person's would. Leo had never found a scale that was strong enough to test how much he actually weighed, but he was pretty sure it was definitely close to a ton. Bones and muscle had to be very dense in order to make someone completely invulnerable.

Letting out a sound that was definitely a resigned groan, he allowed Seth to drag him further into the water. He seemed incredibly tense the further they got in, hands balled up into fists. Leo had been accused several times by August of having no imagination, (a claim which he had thrown back at his little brother, considering the sixteen year old read nothing but non-fiction) but his mind was definitely working overtime right now considering everything that could go wrong. Drowning would be an awful way to die a second time.

They got out to about waist deep and Leo was not going to be going a step further. He also could feel his feet sinking further into the sand beneath his feet. "Alright, this is far enough, I think I'm going to go back now." This was all said in basically one breath and Leo turned around to get as far away from the water as he possibly could.

"Wait, wait, WAIT!" Seth objected and pulled to make him stop.

He'd noticed Leo sinking further than his steps in the wet sand. "Least let me see if I can carry you. There's no point comin' out here and not testin' out a few things! Just get on my back. If I can't swim with you on it, you can always step on me to get out of the water. We won't go more than chest deep. Come on, Buddy."

It wasn't some morbid curiosity or half effort urging that Seth gave. There was real concern, refusing to give up--genuinely invested in the results of what he proposed. He refused to give up on Leo. What if the islands went completely under water? Or if they were on a boat and it capsized? Seth needed to know the kid could be saved.

"It'll be the last thing we try today, I promise."

If it was possible, Leo managed to tense up even more when Seth tried to make him stop. "Carry me?" That got an eyebrow raise out of Leo. "Do you realize I probably weigh as much as a statue made of metal, right?" Frankly, he wasn't sure exactly how much he weighed, there had never been an accurate scale that they could find that wouldn't break first. But he knew it was a lot more than a human being. Such was the price for invulnerability.

He was getting back into his usual stubborn mindset. "I am done here." Nothing Seth said was going to make him go out further. He was already far enough out of his comfort zone, thank you very much.

[personal profile] darknstormy 2018-08-20 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It shouldn't have been any surprise that Leo doubted him, regardless of how determined Seth was to prove the young monster wrong.

"Fine! Run back with your tail between your legs! Don't even bother to see if anyone can help you, or think about what it'll do to me and Margo if water comes up and we haven't figured out shit about how t'save you!" he barked back.

Leo went in one direction, Seth faced the other. He refused to watch his surrogate brother quit. It shouldn't have stung the way it did. He was used to being quit on, even by flesh and blood. Seth folded his arms over his chest and looked out over the water.
