Event Log: Home Sweet Home

Who: All characters participating in the event
What: The event log for the Home Sweet Home event
Where: All over the city
When: June 20th-July 2nd
Warnings: Nothing bad could ever happen now that you're home

It could happen at any moment- any action you do could be cut short by a sudden trancelike state, and so hopefully it happens when you're safe in your surroundings. And of course you're safe... after all, what could happen to you now that you're finally home?

Whether you don't remember Hadriel at all, or you just believe that this entire ordeal is over, you're home for good now, which is something worth celebrating. What happens in your home? Are you treated like royalty or just cast aside and forgotten? How are your friends doing? Your family? Everything is just as it should be and it's easy to get lost in it, even for an unlucky onlooker who may find themselves drawn into your trance and able to interact with you as you mill about your world and your reality.

Snapping out of it is the only way to end this trance, and you've got to eat and sleep at some point, but how can you go back now that you've been teased with what you desire (or maybe even fear) the most?

Ah. Then...no wonder you're so urgent to get back.

[he wouldn't know, he doesn't love. Some part of him feels like he should be envious that she still can, but mostly Law's all, you do you. Love is for other people. Good for you, Caedra, get it.]

He's not the only reason I want to leave. There's a lot I hate about this place. But... it does make being trapped here much harder.

[Did her message return with the vrocks she had summoned, once they were sent back home? It's hard, realizing she may never know. How this place, and how the Door, interacts with time and interplanar space is still such a mystery.

But she likes to think it worked. That even if he can't reach her, at least he knows she's trying to return.]

You don't have anyone like that, do you?

[More a statement than a question. He's said as much himself, he doesn't seem to like people. He's probably broken so many hearts.]

No. [matter-of-fact, while he looks for somewhere to have a seat] Never have. It's not something that really matters to me.

[his placid tone isn't concealing anything, for once. It's all true and there's no judgment for people who do need to be loved. Not Trafalgar Law. Love is a liability.]

So seeing that glimpse of home...may not have been as much of a comfort as it was torture.

[Go on then, sit. She's going to stand here by herself still looking mildly distressed.]

It was comforting while I was there, it's being pulled out of it that's hard. You're lucky, Law. Whatever is going on here seems so much easier for you than it is for me.

[Sure, he has his crew, and his goals. She has family. The only people she has any sympathy toward whatsoever - but it's an easy weakness for these gods to exploit, whether or not it was their intent.]

You think so?

[it's not sarcastic, it's a real question. Is it easier for him? Or is he just hiding it? Or, is he actually the one to be pitied because he can't bring himself to love anyone enough to yearn for them?]

I'm afraid I really can only imagine. But you have my sympathies, if you want them.

[His sympathy itself doesn't really do anything for her, no, except that she can appreciate the usefulness of someone with his strength and the value of such a person seeming to want to help. Physical contact she would normally find much more of a comfort, but now she's cautious about that too. How much more would he end up seeing if the trance were to envelop them both yet again?

So she'll just stand a short distance away and fold her arms again as she studies his face. She doesn't have to be a psychologist to understand that he's gone through some deep trauma. He's hinted at it enough, and she's never met a mortal who can rival a demon in lack of empathy. She doesn't pity him, just accepts that it's how he is.]

I wouldn't have said it if I didn't think so. Whatever happened to you, you've protected yourself from it and it seems you do well as a result. Love is powerful and I wouldn't want to be without it, but it's not for everyone, despite what your people might try to tell you. You don't need to be like the rest of them if you don't want to be.

Thanks, but I'm not really in need of a pep talk. It is what it is.

[terrible at sympathy and terrible at taking it. He's the worst.]

I don't mind the glimpses of home but they do nothing for me, they're not real. It's not like the nightmares, where people had a window into something extremely painful. All you've seen of me is the blandest, most normal parts of a pirate's life.

[he's not really sure what his point is, anymore, except to maybe deflect any sense that he could be enjoying any of these trances. His bond with his crewmates is strong but it provokes no desperate yearning, particularly since in reality he's on his way to a showdown in which he might very well get killed. If he's not seeing what is actually happening to his crew in the present, what's the point?]

I don't do pep talks. It was an observation.

[And goodness, the way he talks, it's like he's regretting that she got to see him being himself. She's asked for stories before, and he always dodges trying to give any.]

You don't really want me to see your nightmares though, do you? I enjoyed those little glimpses into what you think is boring. It's all very new and interesting to me. Your ship, for example - I had never seen anything like that. I don't think these dreams are meant to be anything special for us, but they're certainly interesting to an outsider.

[It's easier to relax now that the conversation has shifted back to him, though. It pulls her out of her own thoughts, and she goes to sit beside him finally, though she maintains a couple inches of open space between them.]

[good idea Caedra, no more touch-based visions here]

Of course not. I'm just saying that...I don't know what I'm saying.

[brain fuzzy right now. At least he isn't too terribly thrown by what he's seen of Caedra in her element. Like, yeah, he can deal.]

I really don't know what the gods want out of this, it's not inspiring fear or anger. Just... [OH HELL NO that's a conclusion right there, his face morphs into pure ire] Confusion.

Hmm. That's one I don't know much about. People don't seem to mention them often, unless I'm forgetting something. What has Confusion been responsible for before?

[He's derailed her a bit, but she'll keep her thoughts on hold until her question is answered. If he thinks his submarine, and his life as a government-sanctioned pirate, are boring, then what does he consider exciting? But - information about one of their tormentors, first.]

I don't know off the top of my head, but they do exist. I got an orb from them as a reward for retrieving Hope orbs.

[his hand goes to his shoulder where the mark is under his sleeve; if he doesn't use it, it'll wear off in a couple of days and that's that. Maybe it's better that he's never used it.]

I've heard of some receiving such rewards here, but what exactly do they do? Or - what benefit does yours give, anyway. If you've mentioned it, I don't recall.

[She's made her comments before about how much she prefers the idea of Hope not having the sort of power he has. No need to rehash that. She knows Law had his reasons for doing so, even if she disagrees. If he hadn't helped, others would have. anyway. These people are so eager to protect each other and the ones who keep them all prisoner.]

No, I never said anything. I hadn't even intended to use it, but then Doflamingo came through the Door, and I needed every tool at my disposal to potentially protect myself and anyone he went after. From the research I did, Confusion's offer was to erase a memory of my choosing - mine, or someone else's.

[All of them, even stupid stupid Love and irritating Confusion, are his tools to manipulate. To study, build off of, and eventually use for his own ends. Of course they have to be alive for that, so sue him.]

[Her eyebrows lift a little, but then she nods slowly.]

That's... very powerful. But hard to know how to use, I imagine. Could it affect one of the gods themselves?

[Wouldn't that just be a treat.]

Doubtful. Admittedly, I haven't tried it, but I expect that if I did I'd be shut down on more than one level for even making the attempt. The cost of the experiment may be too high.

They wear off after a while, even if you don't use it. In a few days it'll be a moot point. I only mention it because Confusion does exist and he, she, or it might very well be the asshole responsible here.

Ah. Yes, there may well be a time when challenging them openly is the right thing to do, but - not likely within the next few days.

[Sadly.]

And it's a single use only? We could test something with it, if the test itself is worth the one use. I could summon an underling known to me, have you erase a memory, and then I could send it back home. And then call it back again and see whether or not the memory has returned, or if it remains gone.

That...I'm not entirely sure about. [eyes narrowing] Can you do that? We ourselves can't travel between dimensions but something you can summon can?

Yeah, it's one of the first things I tried.

[Which, as he's said, he sort of missed out on. Probably for the best. She smiles, though, proud of having made that discovery. Proud of her abilities, too. Summoning has always been her particular specialty, after all.]

I'm guessing it's because it avoids the Door entirely, so it works like I would expect it to. We came through the Door, so I can't leave, or can't send you somewhere else. But I can still summon like normal.

Weird. [he's still dubious that there's not some kind of fuckery behind the scenes - it would be just like the gods, wouldn't it?] I don't know what such a test would accomplish, especially if it was a one-use deal. I'm not exactly planning to go sucking up to Confusion to get another one.

No, I know. It would just be a way to learn if the gods' effects can persist on creatures who pass between this world and another without using the Door to do so. Very specific, very limited, but if you weren't going to use it anyway, then maybe we can learn something.

[Given her usual ability to shift between various planes of reality, it strikes her as useful, anyway. If she ever finds a way out of here but has to come back, for instance, then it would be nice to know how cautious she would need to be around these creatures.]

Hm. [the most noncommittal of noises. Sure, otherwise he's just going to let it expire but how does this benefit him? It doesn't, so he's going to conveniently forget it]

I can't return a lost memory, you know. I'm sure that's what Confusion wants - losing memories would do that to a person. Or anything else.

Is that supposed to be a reason not to do this? Anyone I can bring here is completely expendable.

[And it's no surprise that this boon Confusion has granted is meant to benefit Confusion itself. That's just how these things work. Caedra is very familiar with that - she expects it. But sometimes the benefits are worth it.]

If you don't do anything with it, then it's a wasted opportunity.

I'm not sure what to gain by it. Except to learn whether or not what happens here remains when we leave...

[aaaaahhhh yes now he understands]

Would it ease your mind if I said yes?

[Aw look at the little lightbulb go off. That's more like it.]

It would, assuming you meant it. I happen to know a lot of liars.

[But she sounds like she's teasing, mostly. She's just not big on trust, and words are cheap.]

I lie less frequently than people think I do.

[although here it's been the opposite - people seem to really trust him. But, joke aside...]

I don't see that it'll be much of use to me in the long run, but if it's useful to you, then I might as well. Rather than let it expire, I doubt I'll run into a desperate need to wipe anyone's memory in the next couple of days.
