Intro Log: Off my chest

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for April.
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: April 10th-13th
Warnings: Newbies, explosions, and things that are definitely treasure chests and not evil monsters out to get you.

Welcome to your first day in Hadriel! Enjoy your surroundings, meet your fellow travelers, and be sure to start exploring so you can collect as much loot as possible!

On the ground around you may notice bang snaps, scattered haphazardly. Try not to step on any of them, or you might burn your feet! Feel free to gather them up and use these baby fireworks however you see fit; there are dozens strewn about on the ground. Popping them will emit clouds of smoke of various colors, and... well, not much else.

Is there anything else lurking around? Glad you asked! If you look around, you may find a few innocent-looking treasure chests. Which you know, normally means free loot- except, in Hadriel, nothing is quite the way it's advertised of course and the chests are actually dangerous mimics. Mimics- often disguised as treasure chests- are monsters with surprisingly quick movements and gaping maws filled with teeth. They exist to try and fool an unlucky traveler into thinking they've gotten something good... only to lunge at them in their moment of triumph and prove that life is actually terrible and nothing comes for free.

[Maketh hesitates. She might understand, a little. That sort of memory that digs its claws into your skull and won't ever leave.] You still have to ask. In this place, you have to ask. It's important, Cole. Even if it helps, you have to ask.

[fadeling]

Why? They forget me, too.

[mismanagement]

Because if you don't, that means you're like the gods here. [Maketh says it as gently as she can.] Sometimes they heal us. Do things to us. But they never ask. It's just because they want it.

[fadeling]

I don't do that. I don't make toys, I help when they need it.

[mismanagement]

But you need to ask. [Maketh swallows down the urge to shout at him. It won't help. Most of her knows that.] Even when you're helping.

[fadeling]

[He doesn't like it, but...]

...alright. I'll try to remember.

[mismanagement]

[Maketh nods slowly. That's better.] Thank you, Cole. I...appreciate that.

[fadeling]

Yes. Sorry.

[mismanagement]

[Again with the apologies. Maketh has a feeling that Cole does this a lot.] Do you still want to come inside?

[fadeling]

Do you still want me too?

[mismanagement]

[Now that's the question, isn't it? Maketh hesitates.] I--yes. It's not safe out here.

[fadeling]

Then...yes. I think.

[mismanagement]

[Maketh nods slowly.] I could make some coffee. I don't live far from here. Do you know what that is? Coffee, I mean.

[fadeling]

No. What is it?

[mismanagement]

It's a drink. It's bitter but -- [Maketh smiles] --you can add things to make it sweeter. I'll show you.

[fadeling]

Alright. Thank you. [It's an improvement over the recent mood, at least.]

[mismanagement]

[Maketh nods.] You're welcome. It's not far. Walk with me?

[fadeling]

Yes. I won't get lost.

[mismanagement]

[Maketh nods again, and leads the way back to her apartment. It's not far.]

[fadeling]

[He does follow, quiet and subdued, but he follows. He's used to people telling him to stop, but only a few were so vehement about it. He doesn't like it, but he knows when he's hurting people. ]

Small and silent, sibilant, sinister...snakes snuck into shadows.

I don't like it here.

[mismanagement]

[Things hiding in shadows - that Maketh understands. She holds her door open. It's not a long walk, really. And the apartment she shares with Amos has been safe thus far.] I don't think many people do. But this is where we are.

[fadeling]

It's not a good place. It boils beneath the black. [It feels like something I'd watching all the time, just outside of what he can see and if he tries to look, it vanishes.

He's maybe a little tentative stepping inside.]

How do you stay?

[mismanagement]

[Maketh doesn't hurry him. No need. She just waits by the door.] Because I don't have a choice. I have a duty.

[fadeling]

[It's clearly not the answer he's expecting and he even manages to look a little surprised.]

Why?

[mismanagement]

Why? [Maketh echos with a frown.] It's just how things are.
