Intro Log: Puddle Jumpers

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for September
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: September 10th-13th
Warnings: Fresh meat, lots of rain and angry ogres

If the rain on your face isn't enough to wake you up in the colosseum, maybe the thundering footsteps and- well, thunder- is. The first thing that you may notice is that it's incredibly wet around here, with winds that could knock you over if you aren't careful and thunder that brings with it a torrent of constant rainfall.

That's all fine though, because the gods saw fit to help you out on your way in and now everyone will be waking up wearing a rain coat! These coats are a little odd, and some of them are downright silly, but we trust that you'll make do. Of course, a few of the raincoats have additional sleeves, neck holes, and entirely too many buttons as well- but hey, it's the best we could do.

Wait, what was that about thundering footsteps? Oh right, as you're navigating your new fashion choices, there are some monsters afoot who will want nothing more than to grind you into a pulp and eat you- well, if you're organic, that is. If you're not organic, then they still want to grind you to a pulp, but maybe not so much the eating part.

Ogres are from many fantasy stories, but these in particular are from the Dragon Age series. With incredible strength and stamina and massive horns, fangs, and a bloodlust for violence, these monsters won't stop until everyone around them is a blood smear on the ground. They're also not too happy about this rainfall either, so be careful not to slip in the puddles as you run away from them!

Once you've splashed around a bit, feel free to run off into the stormy abyss of our islands. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers September 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

Would it be like using opposites? Water against fire? [she looks a little confused at the idea of using weapons against elements] Really? I'm new to using weapons and I've never heard of something like that being possible.

Then I'll do my best to be fun. [but she gets the feeling that she won't always have to be with Ephemera, which is nice for a woman who was raised to be pleasing at all times] No, I can't say that I have.

[Probably worse if your soul ends up stuck because of it.]

I won't say it didn't make me look at literally everything differently. I keep thinking about my cat now, like, really hoping his soul doesn't end up stuck with us when he passes.

[Not that Sal doesn't want Gizmo to be around forever. He would just want him to pass on. Damn...he hopes his dad remembers to feed him while he's gone...]

( They can converse later. For now, the stranger is certainly working at that ogre, allowing Kate the time to properly set up her shot. She steps further back, goes for more distance where the bow works best, and shifts the stance of her draw, waiting for the opening—

There!

Now, the arrow can fly, arcing true through the air with a smoothness that would make Henry proud after all those hours spent drilling her on her movements. An ache she doesn't have time to dwell on, the following arrow far more quickly drawn and loosed, and Kate glances down at her spontaneous partner, not yet moving back towards the fray of the Colosseum.

[yeah, probably. souls don't get stuck in her world]

Finding out that the whole soul thing is real will do that to a person. And yeah. Besides, I bet cat heaven is awesome.

[she's bad at housepets. not that she doesn't like them, it's just that she's bad at taking responsibility for others. or herself]

More or less. [In mentality, Ravine would agree.] And no, it is not so simple. People need the gods for food and shelter, and in exchange the gods gain strength from their emotions, oftentimes influencing their minds and physical state and surroundings in order to inspire the feelings a god requires. The problem is the mere fact that it was not a consentual arrangement... and most are unlikely to have agreed, anyway.

[She can appreciate the fact that the kid is taking this in stride. It's such a drag trying to calm frantic people down.]
whip_poor_will: (you gotta learn to play the game right)

[personal profile] whip_poor_will 2018-09-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Lips curling into a smile, Ravine bends her arm to idly fiddle with the cuff of her long coat. "Clearly I have! In all fairness, I do not fault you for your alarm."

Most people would percieve a 6'8" tall black-haired woman as a monster at first, too. Anyone who has seen way too many Asian horror films, for sure.

Despite the weather, there is not a drop of water on her. None on her shades, or soaked onto the fabric of her clothes. These are hardly comforting factors, indicating that she's anything but a normal lady.

"I go where the rain is not," she comments unhelpfully.

[The lack of food to hunt was something that surprised Kelson as well. The idea of having to 'shop' for food in cans and packages was a foreign concept. Granted, hunting for his food wasn't something the king of Gwynedd had to do on a regular basis, but it was always a special treat at the end of a fine day's hunt. Here, there was none of that. And whatever he found in the cans certainly wasn't peacock or venison. He was pretty sure it wasn't even hare. But. It was food, and Kelson had learned not to be terribly picky after being trapped underground, eating nothing but fish and funeral offerings.

Kelson grabbed cans of things he recognized, leaving what he didn't alone since he neither knew what it was or how to prepare it. Actually, the mere fact that he knew how to prepare anything was kind of a miracle, and thanks to the kindness of the people he'd met here.

Still, the boy, felt terrible. Sniffling and fighting through the rain that had plagued them for days now, he shuffled and gathered more supplies, since there was no one to do it for him. He noticed Daryl though, and wasn't sure he'd seen him before, or if he was new.]

Do you know what this is?

[He asked, holding up a can of food.]

[Harlan is aware that this is probably weird and awkward? But he doesn't mind. Awkward situations rarely faze him.]

Suit yourself.

[And he goes back to licking the frosting off of his own cupcake. He's usually one of those monsters that goes around eating the tops of cupcakes and not finishing the bottoms, but he couldn't do that to something Del baked. He'll force himself to eat the whole thing, even the cupcake butt.]

The city hasn't flooded yet, and it's like day four of this shit. We've got boats out the ass, anyway. Just make sure you claim an apartment in one of the spires if you're worried about getting swept away.
ghostlocked: i think i thrive under lack of accountability (wtf • truth be told)

[personal profile] ghostlocked 2018-09-16 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
[He's never heard of Durotar, unfortunately... Then again, what the hell was he expecting? New York? That wouldn't really solve the issue for him.]

That's not on Earth, is it?

[Could be some tiny country he's never heard of. That's a very strong possibility.]

This is rude as hell, I know, but are you a half-orc? I thought we might be from the same place.
ghostlocked: unfairly (yay • i beat you fair and square)

[personal profile] ghostlocked 2018-09-16 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
[He snorts. Yeah, that.]

I did. No hard feelings, but you had it coming. How long were you gone? I went home for a bit once. It felt like a year for me, but it was only a couple days here.
ghostlocked: i prefer to call them "collateral friendships" (shook • they're not hostages!)

[Oh my god??? Harlan stands when she does and just kind of... watches her spazzing around for a moment. Until she yells at him. His eyebrows shoot up and he panics briefly—goddammit is there really a monster outside?—but, no, it was just the sudden volume that startled him. Christ, kid.]

Shit, were you fucking around in that creepy foggy area down on the south island? Don't go in there. There's—well, you know.

[Admittedly, the Silent Hill area is one of his favorite haunts in town. He rarely goes inside, but he likes to hang out nearby. It's calming for him.

Clearly this girl did not have the same experience.]

Look, whatever came after you didn't follow you out. Nothing ever does down there. You're safe here, so let me see your arm. I can heal it.

[He waves her over, hoping but doubting that she's familiar with magic so he can skip the explanation and go straight to the arm-fixing. The window is next, and he'd like to get to that sooner rather than later.]
sallyfaced: (now i'm just frowning)

[personal profile] sallyfaced 2018-09-16 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I bet everything would be a scratch post. I wonder if it would have T.V, though. I'm pretty sure my cat is incapable of living without it.

[He's not even joking. It's like he understands what he's watching...]
sallyfaced: (are you high)

[personal profile] sallyfaced 2018-09-16 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...that file thingy I found on my phone said something like that. [The welcoming guide, he means.] I can't say I was looking forward to being dragged out of my home into a literal and metaphorical storm, but you know, can't be helped.

[At any rate, he can understand why people would be angry. Maybe they'll come around eventually. Maybe they'll be proven right. Who knows?]
sallyfaced: (now i'm just frowning)

[personal profile] sallyfaced 2018-09-16 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Sal is one of those monsters completely incapable of finishing a cupcake at all. A true freak of nature. He needs his teenager license revoked. Still, he idly glances about at all of the treats in the display case anyway.]

Day four...damn. [He supposes it was too much to hope that he arrived on the one day things got really bad and that this was all completely new. Oh well.] How do I do that, anyway? Just...find an empty place and stick a flag in it or something?

[That part is a joke, but the idea of walking into an apartment and just 'claiming' it is really weird and more or less conjured up that image for him.]
aroundthecoroner: (indoor living)

[personal profile] aroundthecoroner 2018-09-16 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
[And at this point Michael is tempted to try and push the cart with her. Why won't she leave it? Whatever she needs oxygen for, it's probably not worth them both dying. Or maybe she... needs it to live or something? Whatever, god.]

Get... on?

[He eyes the cart- and the girl- dubiously. Well, as best he can, anyway.]

I, uh, don't think that's a great idea!

[He's not exactly huge, but he's still an adult-sized person, and it's muddy out here, and... well, she is going faster than he is. Maybe she has some kind of super strength thing going on? Wouldn't be the first.

Against his better judgment, Michael speeds up a bit so that he can hop on. He sure hopes they don't die horribly!]

Fine, just go straight! The exits are in the wall!
aroundthecoroner: (on all the ashes)

[personal profile] aroundthecoroner 2018-09-16 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
[The monster in Michael's head is limited by his human senses, but it keeps pulling those senses to focus on the loud footsteps, the massive shapes moving out of the corners of his eyes, the vibrations through the mud. It's distracting, and he's glad he already told the kid how to get out of here.

He follows the blue streak of hair until the wall looms up ahead, and then they're out.

And then Michael's in just about the same position as Sal, because wow does he basically never run that much.]

Yeah those are... pretty bad. I miss when the monsters were smaller.

[Which is most other months, at least. He prefers the tiny ones you can just put in a bucket.

He wipes his glasses again, now that they're standing still, and gets a more in-focus look at the person he was following. Hair in pigtails, wearing a mask? It's definitely out of the ordinary, but Michael's not about to judge. There's way weirder in Hadriel, and anyway, who cares? They're all trapped in an alternate dimension, fashion choices are the least of their worries.]

So, uh, you're probably new, right?

[She's soaked to the bone, but for the moment it matters little. Carolina's been in worse positions, so the clothing clinging to her body or the strands of damp red hair that meld to her face are given little thought. Some time had been spent in the area surrounding the Colosseum, and while she had aided a few people within, she'd eventually done what she could, leaving. Little point to trying to stay dry, as dry had gone out the window some time ago. She is flexing her left hand, circling her rotator cuff, wincing a little from a blow to her right leg. No doubt there will be a stylish bruise there tomorrow. The armor might have aided this time, but that looming threat always makes Carolina weary about just wearing it despite the fact that she would like nothing more.

There had been no familiar faces in the arena, which isn't a bad thing. The merc formerly known as Sharkface had garnered a pause from Carolina, but a small blessing that he recalls this place. It had taken more than just her to take him out last time, even if she hadn't wanted things to go that way. Yet it's back to their residence that she's going, darting from cover to cover, which is why it does take a moment, but no more than that. A hand moves, sweeping her bangs off to the side, working the droplets of water that cling to her face off, as if that will make the image go away. It's familiar, that broad back and shoulders in that massive white armor, one that is in her dreams - her nightmares.]

... Maine?

[It's gruffer, thicker, and again Carolina finds herself freezing where she is. What he's doing, she can't even begin to fathom. Breaking and entering? She doubts this is another Alpha scenario where he's been here for some time unnoticed, as Maine's not that inconspicuous, and his appearance would have caused a stir in her circle, whether good or bad... Nothing here is fluid, and even as she says that name, thoughts go flooding through her mind. The last time she had seen him, already lost, and yet there isn't just that. He'd been a power house, to put it lightly, a titan of a man, someone who had had her back more than once. Her tongue does feel thick in her mouth, stuck there, because it could be the man that she had once known.

Or it could be what he had become.]

Yeah! [ Like it's an incredibly dumb question, and Daryl gestures to the roaring monster in front of them with a sharp tilt of his head and a dry sarcastic tone to his yell. ] Why ain't you got your piece out!?

[ Because he's... pretty sure this guy's a cop. They usually dress a lot differently where Daryl's from, at least the ones that he runs into, but the badge around his neck and the gun he's carrying are giveaways. Daryl hasn't quite shed his pre-apocalypse instinct, and if there wasn't something serious to deal with that was a danger to him too, Daryl might have thought differently about helping him.

But hell, who wants to be eaten? So Daryl thrusts Jake ahead of him with the grip he's got on his raincoat, loosing around arrow behind them to keep the thing from wanting to follow them.

It sinks into the beast's shoulder and otherwise doesn't really work as the ogre thunders after them. ]

[Not that Sal isn't used to the questions or stares, but he always appreciates it when it's not even a thing. Especially after almost becoming a giant monster's meal?

He stood straight again, holding down the pink petals of his hood so it wouldn't fly off his head.]

Yeah...and I'm starting to get the impression monsters aren't that out of the ordinary here.

So neither of us is in Kansas anymore, guess we know that much... [ Daryl doesn't have many pop culture references to hand, but of the few movies he saw on his dad's old black and white when he was younger, this situation pretty much seems like it could be some Wizard of Oz shit. Except without all the fun.

Jersey, huh? What the hell... ]
Maybe you were. Hell, least that would be some kind of explanation about what's goin' on.

[ Daryl had no idea how he's going to go about finding his way back to his people, but he doesn't have too long to dwell on the thought -- the kid is talking again. This little guy sure is chatty, huh? Daryl raises his eyebrows at him, half amused, before looking down at himself like he's just noticed the state he's in. He's been feeling it for hours though, and it's just getting worse. ]

Nah. Fell down a ravine, got stabbed with one of these, [ gesturing to the arrows strapped to the crossbow. ] then had to kill two walkers gettin' up it again. Then... [ Daryl raises a hand to touch his bleeding head thoughtfully, looking at his bloody fingers. ] Not sure how I got this... I think somebody shot me?

Oh yeah, it's great. Other than the poverty, the garbage, and all the crime.

[ It's Jake's god given right as an NYC native to drag it as much as he wants. Still, at least one person in this store isn't losing their freaking mind and talking like the world isn't ending.

Which it totally is, by the way. ]

Still the greatest city in the world, though.
dadyl: (019: s1)

[ This guy is so animated that Daryl has a second to wonder where all his energy is coming from, even after their dash, the raincoat really capping off how much of a cartoon this kid is. Daryl just scowls though, still worried more about the fact that there could be walkers hidden anywhere, ready to come around any corner, than anything else. He hasn't even had the chance to clear the house yet to make sure they're alone, but...

Well. With all the noise Jesse is making? If the house had any in it they would already be here. And least there's that.

But when Jesse starts to freak out again and skids, practically slipping in his own blood, Daryl steps forward and forcefully grabs him by the upper arm, grip like a vice, and drags his struggling, stupid ass over to a weirdly shaped couch. He shoves him down, the world's worst nurse.

Just what he needs now, after losing his people - to be babysitting some little asshole that doesn't know what's good for him. ]

I said, sit. [ And Daryl raises his crossbow, but it's just to take with him down the first hall, checking that the first floor is deserted before making his way back to the front room. ] Ain't no one here, so chill. We gotta figure this shit out. [ And he nods pointedly at Jesse's feet. ] An' you gotta deal with those.

[ Yeeeeeah Drake can tell the freakout is still happening, even if the guy is holding a conversation. Maybe a bit more distraction will help? He's not an expert on managing this sort of thing but he knows the basics of talking somebody down.

Getting them to focus on something else can work, right? ]

You'll have to prove that to me, I'll visit when we get out of here. Where's your favorite place?

[ It takes only a moment for Jake to tug his shield out to show Pratt. It's the real deal. ]

Jake Peralta, I'm a detective with the 99th in Brooklyn.

[ Even mid freak out Jake can't help but be pleased with how freaking cool that sounds to say out loud. Who cares if he's been a detective for years? Still the most awesome perk of the job. Well, besides solving crimes and helping people.

Whatever. ]

And I wouldn't know, I have no idea what Montana looks like.

[ He thinks it's midwesternish? But not corn-midwest. ]
