Intro Log: Puddle Jumpers

Who: New arrivals and everyone else!
What: The intro log for September
Where: The colosseum and all around the city.
When: September 10th-13th
Warnings: Fresh meat, lots of rain and angry ogres

If the rain on your face isn't enough to wake you up in the colosseum, maybe the thundering footsteps and- well, thunder- is. The first thing that you may notice is that it's incredibly wet around here, with winds that could knock you over if you aren't careful and thunder that brings with it a torrent of constant rainfall.

That's all fine though, because the gods saw fit to help you out on your way in and now everyone will be waking up wearing a rain coat! These coats are a little odd, and some of them are downright silly, but we trust that you'll make do. Of course, a few of the raincoats have additional sleeves, neck holes, and entirely too many buttons as well- but hey, it's the best we could do.

Wait, what was that about thundering footsteps? Oh right, as you're navigating your new fashion choices, there are some monsters afoot who will want nothing more than to grind you into a pulp and eat you- well, if you're organic, that is. If you're not organic, then they still want to grind you to a pulp, but maybe not so much the eating part.

Ogres are from many fantasy stories, but these in particular are from the Dragon Age series. With incredible strength and stamina and massive horns, fangs, and a bloodlust for violence, these monsters won't stop until everyone around them is a blood smear on the ground. They're also not too happy about this rainfall either, so be careful not to slip in the puddles as you run away from them!

Once you've splashed around a bit, feel free to run off into the stormy abyss of our islands. You can explore the rest of the city! Find a house, a new monster, a project to help with, or simply scavenge for supplies. Good luck, and enjoy your stay in Hadriel!

► This log covers September 10th-13th.
► Feel free to make your own logs as well!
► All characters arrive with phones that have network communication and the newbie guide installed.
► Please put your character's name and open/closed in the subject line of your starters!

[ DiMA realizes only after ducking inside and taking in his surroundings that this place is definitely inhabited. A dilemma: does he go back out searching, or wait for at least the wind to die down a bit first? It doesn't seem like anyone's home at the moment so he decides to wait a little, rude as that may be, rather than risk being damaged.

Except his assessment was wrong -- someone is home. A man with a weapon, at that, as well as a blinking light on his temple.

Interesting.

Dangerous, but also interesting. DiMA freezes where he stands when the gun doesn't lower, memory bank still a trash bag wrapped lump cradled in his arms or else he would raise them to further demonstrate he's not a threat. ]

My name is DiMA. I'm sorry, there was no answer and the door was unlocked. I simply needed to get out of the rain.

[ Despite the weapon leveled at him, his voice is calm and steady, oddly patient. Like he believes the stranger will see the truth and choose not to harm him. ]

I'm not in the best shape for this weather. If I could just put this down, I'll show you.

[Connor is quiet several seconds, considering that response and also taking the chance to get a better look at the intruder. He recognizes the resemblance to Nick, of course, but doesn't immediately think anything of it; androids in his world are often identical, after all, but it does tell him this person is probably from the same place Nick is. He's certainly more... Modified, though, and the explanation about the weather makes sense, and so finally Connor decides to go ahead and lower his weapon cautiously.]

Show me.

[It's an order just to maintain control of the situation, and Connor is still wary, but also believes DiMA probably means what he said and so he's curious about whatever it is.]

[ DiMA steps forward slowly so as not to distress the stranger further, and sets his memory bank down on the table carefully. He unhooks himself from it, finally, and then pulls off the dripping cow poncho carefully.

The modifications may have been visible even under the hood, but with the protective garment gone it's clear that this robot is not in the best shape. His head isn't so much a head as it is a face affixed to an open mess of wires and makeshift components cobbled together from scrap just to keep him running. The "skin" that once covered his frame is severely damaged, exposing his old circuitry to the elements. He turns to the side a little to better display exactly why the storm outside is so dangerous for him, gesturing at his head and shoulders with a skeletal hand. ]

I'm slightly less than waterproof, you see.

[Connor watches him, gun aimed at the ground but still ready to use if he needs to, although fortunately he doesn't think he will. Getting an actual good look at DiMA definitely corroborates the story about needing to get out of the rain, and it's honestly a little shocking, even if not as much as it might've been if Connor hadn't met Lucy briefly; she too had been missing most of her head other than her face, wires and cables spilling out almost like twists of hair, and Connor wonders briefly if any of the synthetics from Nick's world--assuming that is indeed where this person is from--are in such disrepair.

After another second or so of consideration Connor flicks the safety back onto his gun, tucking it into his belt behind his back, stepping closer in curiosity. He's realized at this point that his LED is exposed, glowing steadily blue, but decides to try to play it off for the moment; it's probably not the worst thing if this person finds out he's an android, thankfully.]

You arrived at an inconvenient time. This storm is unusual for this place.

[Although rain in general isn't, so they'll definitely need to figure something out for that problem. But for now, he should probably introduce himself.]

I'm Connor.

[He doesn't apologize for pulling a gun, but--]

You can stay here temporarily. I'll let my roommate know, so she is not surprised if she returns.

[ With the gun tucked away, Connor's approach isn't at all alarming. DiMA stands where he is, letting the younger man look at whatever he likes. Most people are far more alarmed by his appearance, be they human or synth, so innocent curiosity is a nice change of pace. He's not sure what his host is himself -- a modified human, maybe, as synths don't have LEDs -- but smiles at the hospitality. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Connor, that's very kind. When it blows over, I'll find a place of my own with far more caution. And perhaps look into getting rewired.

[ He's not holding out too much hope for that, though. This place doesn't look seem like it has a wealth of compatible equipment for him. ]

This is strange, usually I'm the one giving introductions, but... may I ask you a few questions?
missiondeterminant: (47)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-09-14 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
There may be empty units in this spire.

[He isn't sure, but there are a lot of apartments and it doesn't seem like a busy enough place for them all to be occupied. It's probably worth a look, at least, since who knows how long the storm will last.

And yeah, getting rewired is probably not a realistic goal unfortunately, though Connor is curiously glancing over all the wires and tubes to see if he can figure out how they work; this technology is definitely not what's mainly in use where he's from, of course, which makes it more fascinating but also less likely he's going to have any idea of what's going on, android or not.

The question about asking questions is a bit of a surprise, and also oddly familiar in a way considering Connor's own approach to asking people for permission to then assault them with personal inquiries, but considering DiMA apparently just arrived he probably should've been expecting it.]

Yes.

[The answer is simple, although it's probably still clear that he's reserving right not to answer.]

Then I'll knock on some more doors after nightfall, when people are more likely to be inside.

[ That seems like the best plan, so he doesn't wind up accidentally in someone else's living room. And though he notes Connor's reticence regarding questions, he doesn't plan to get too personal. There is a bit of curiosity about him, to be saved for after the more pressing matters.

He pulls a Hadriel phone out from... somewhere. Tucked into the wrap he wears around his waist, perhaps, and brings up the welcome guide, scrolled to the signature at the bottom. Offers it for Connor's examination. ]

Are you familiar with the author of this guide? One Nick Valentine?
missiondeterminant: (46)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-09-14 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[That does sound like a good plan, so Connor nods at then watches DiMA pull out his phone and scroll through it. Connor doesn't really have to glance at it to be able to answer the question, but he does anyway.]

Yes. Are you from the same place?

[It's mostly rhetorical since he's pretty sure he knows the answer, but still.]

[ That means he is in fact still here, then. DiMA looks subtly relieved, though then a frown crosses his expression as he glances out at the storm. Nick is in a better state than he is, but that doesn't mean he should go frolicking in what seems to be a hurricane. ]

Yes. Nick is my brother. From the title given, it would seem he's been here for some time?
missiondeterminant: (51)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-09-14 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
['Brother' is an interesting descriptor, and Connor wonders if it's a chosen family designation or a more literal one, but he manages to hold off asking just yet.]

I believe so, yes. I'm not sure how long, however; I only arrived a few months ago.

[And so isn't super well-versed in the history of the people in this place.]

Have you tried contacting him yet? You can do so through the phones.

Not yet. My priority was getting inside -- I only checked this device and found this because it made a sound while I was dropping an injured man at the clinic.

[ He glances from the phone in his hand back to Connor, considering another question. DiMA has never actually used a phone. He knows they existed, pre-war, but they were nothing like this. ]

Don't I need a number to do so? The network it accesses is like nothing I've ever seen before.
missiondeterminant: (13)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-09-14 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You only need to select his name from the contact list. I can show you, if that would help.

[Connor, of course, is completely comfortable with this technology; it's slightly behind his time, but not by a lot and the current tech still works similarly. He is curious as to how someone like DiMA might not be as familiar with it, but he'll ask about that later.]

Contact list..?

[ Look, Fallout kinda happened before any of... this. They are super advanced in very specific ways, but they're definitely not modern. DiMA holds the phone out again, hoping for a tutorial. ]

Please, if you could demonstrate.
missiondeterminant: (22)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-09-14 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Connor takes the phone, although he realizes that, despite his offer, he rarely actually goes through and selects a contact the normal way; android interfacing is a far easier way to handle electronics.

But he can still do it, for sure, and glances briefly at DiMA for a moment as he decides if it's safe to get close enough for them both to see the screen at once, but decides it is. He thinks he could probably win any unlikely fight they got into anyway.

So he demonstrates how to reach the contact list, and then how to select a name; he chooses his own, so they can do a test call.]

You can select what type of message to send, whether text, voice only, or video. Choose that, and make the call.

[He hands the phone back to DiMA, pulling out his own to see if the call comes through successfully.]

[ Well that seems simple enough. DiMA tilts his head at the options curiously, then hits video. Almost instantly, Connor's phone rings beside him. ]

That's all there is to it? These would be very useful back home...
missiondeterminant: (37)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-09-14 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Connor picks up his phone, accepting the call so that DiMA can see how the function works.]

They are very useful. This technology doesn't exist where you're from?

[Just easing into prying a bit.]

[ Well would you look at that. Connor's face pops onto his screen and DiMA's is now on his, and he moves the phone this way and that to test the camera function. That's just nifty. ]

No, it most certainly does not. Networks as I know them have to be wired, although we can broadcast radio signals. This might be like a pip-boy, if they had cameras? I've only ever seen one of those in person.

[ What a novelty. DiMA cuts the call, then scrolls through the list Connor brought up to find Nick's name on it. ]

Would you mind if I made a call now?
missiondeterminant: (13)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-09-14 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Connor has no idea what a pip-boy is, but wow, having to do everything through a wired connection is just... How inconvenient.

At the question he's a little surprised, but--]

If you'd like to.

[Connor will just... Awkwardly stand off to the side and listen?]

[ DiMA doesn't seem to require privacy -- he's had most of his personal conversations with Nick in front of Nate, after all, and this is little more than a greeting. He taps his brother's name, and it rings several times before going to an inbox.

This is not quite as planned now, but as he's peering at the screen to see if there are instructions, the camera flicks back on to record a message. Oh. Okay. He pulls the phone back to a comfortable distance and leaves the following message, then glances back to Connor. Does he just hang up? Oh wait, there's a send button. ]

Now I just press this? [ Yup, that seems to have done it. Now he waits, he supposes, and glances out the window again. ] I hope he's inside.

[Connor listens quietly, watching out of the corner of his eye as he shifts idly on his feet, arms folded patiently behind his back. That he has to leave a message is not a huge surprise, although Connor does realize he's a little disappointed at not getting his curiosity satisfied by hearing the conversation.]

He likely is. He spends a lot of time at the Guard post, which is indoors.

The Guard post.

[ DiMA nods once, and sees an opening for another question. Connor didn't seem to know how long Nick had been here to become a commander of it, but he's not certain what the Guard is in the first place either. ]

What is the Guard, exactly? I'd go there myself to inquire but it looks like I'll have to wait out this storm.
missiondeterminant: (47)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-10-04 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It operates mostly as a watch group, in attempting to intervene in issues before they start, and also in assisting during events or other potentially dangerous situations such as the storm.

[Although he's pretty sure the storm is actually preventing a lot of the Guard from doing their jobs, which kind of negates the point, but whatever. They're trying, at least, and Connor can't necessarily blame them; he has to step back on his own patrolling efforts after nearly being struck by lightning a few days ago himself.]

I see. Protection for the noncombatants in the general population? That's an honorable pursuit.

[ It's when groups like that develop agendas that they become problematic -- he's familiar with several in the Commonwealth, though he hasn't ever engaged them himself. ]

There was an organized-seeming group of fighters in the arena I arrived in earlier. Perhaps that was some of them.
missiondeterminant: (51)

[personal profile] missiondeterminant 2018-10-04 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's likely. Many here know how to fight in some capacity, but so far I haven't seen much organization in that area outside of the Guard.

[And Connor's kept his own distance a little even as a part of it; he doesn't mind danger, but being in danger while in the company of someone else is a big risk for him. One small cut that causes him to bleed blue instead of red and he'll have to explain, and enough people have found out about his android nature against his wishes already.]

There are a few other general organizations, however, that I believe the Guard works with, such as the Clinic and the Firestation.

Then it's good they exist. I'm sure my brother leads them well.

[ He nods his acknowledgment of the other organizations, he saw them mentioned -- and has already visited one of their headquarters. ]

The clinic seemed well organized. The young man I brought in was assisted immediately despite the crowd. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be of much help to any of these groups in my current state.
