World Log: Tundra Arrival

What: The log for the city's arrivel on the ice planet

When: November 21st-November 30th
Warnings: None

You all get some warning to prepare, which is great. A little time to stock up on supplies, make sure everything's where it supposed to be, call your friends in from their fishing boats. And then the city moves. It happens in the blink of an eye - one moment you're on islands, surrounded by ocean, and the next? The next you're surrounded by frozen ground, the temperature has dropped significantly, and even the sky looks different. The air has a bite to it, that familiar feeling telling you it's thinking about snowing soon. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday soon.

The city has rearranged itself back into that old, familiar shape, instead of spread out across islands like it was a moment ago. Maybe that'll make things easier for you, maybe it won't, but it also means the return of the lake and river that used to bisect the city - only now they're frozen over. This climate also means it'll be hard for any plants not otherwise protected to survive - and that you, too, will start feeling that cold if you're away from a warm place for too long.

And warm places might be in short supply, because when the city moved the gods did not. What does that mean for you? Well, whatever supplies are in the shops at the moment the city moves are the only ones left. No new food supplies, no new clothing, nothing. In addition, the power across the whole city is out, including water and heating. Anything else powered or supplied by gods (the hot springs, the mopeds, what's left of the orchard, the armory, the GPS) will not work.

You're on your own. Try not to die.

No, that's kinda rude. And tacky. Unless you feel comfortable with the person and the conversation kind of goes there on its own. But I'm not about to introduce myself by saying [in an overly perky tone of voice] "Hi, I'm George and I'm a Grim Reaper! Ask me how!"

Perky's fine, but this is like someone made some kind of screwed up pod person clone of you that's still learning how humans are supposed to interact with each other.

Oh, I dunno. I kind ramble sometimes, that can be kind of awkward I guess.

That sounds like something my aunt would say, which I guess means it must be true.

From what I've heard of your aunt, I'm so taking that as a compliment. [she sweeps him an exaggerated bow] Compliment accepted.

I do not have rave music on me currently, no. But yeah, of course I've seen it. My aunt and uncle used to watch it every Christmas. One of those holiday tradition things.

And neither do I. But if you want The Pixies or angry chick music or the occasional bit of Johnny Cash, I'm your girl.

And good, you've seen it. You know the lamp?

I've never heard of The Pixies, but I know Johnny Cash. My uncle used to listen to his stuff all the time.

I do know the lamp, and I think I like where this is going.

Thought you might. Anyway, the stores cough up weird shit all the time. Figured the leg lamp might be among 'em. We need to put that badboy right in our front window.

You know what, if we can't find a Christmas Story lamp, I will build you one.

[she bumps shoulders with him] Shut up, it's an awesome song. Which you can listen to 'cause I had my old walkman and CDs in my bag with me when I came here.

[The grin says he's joking, but IS HE? Maybe.]

[she gives him a mock-indignant look] The dark ages, my ass. We had the internet, you know. And pirating songs and movies and skeevy porn sites and everything. It's just that loading them took a little longer and our parents had no idea how to block them.

Ha fucking ha. We had broadband internet, funny guy. And Netscape Navigator. And Napster. And Literotica. And it all worked just fine to serve our pervy and pirating needs.

I've heard of Netscape and Napster, never heard of Literotica, but I think I can see where that one's going.
