There's a rumbling sound in the air early in the afternoon on December 26th. Whether you're new in town or you've seen it all, something like this hasn't happened before. Is it an earthquake? It feels kind of like a small one, and that might be endurable if not for the sudden snarling and gnashing of teeth!

As it turns out, these yet-unnamed apex predators are overrunning the city, ignoring their previous apprehension to barrel right through anything- or anyone- that stands in their way. Seemingly spooked by something, they are aggressive and violent and won't hesitate to tear anyone they meet to pieces... after trampling them underfoot, of course. They're so large and muscular that they may even take a few portions of buildings with them- how would you like to see one of these monsters crashing through your living room?

At least it's only these weird mammoths, though... right?

[Kyna wrinkles her nose.]

Ugh. Gross. How does anyone get anything done without magic?

They have surgery.

[ Wash is grinning a little, because of course she'd say that. ]

Aren't you glad I talked you into staying? You would've been sick of a cast in hours, not weeks. I think it used to take weeks or months or something to heal a broken bone in your time period otherwise.

How long does it take for you at home?

It can be as fast as a few days to a week, with the right treatment.

[She nudges at his leg with her foot.]

Still sucks compared to magic.

Yeah, yeah, rub it in. Or maybe you don't get to, because you were ready to go home still busted.

[ He's teasing now, that means he's getting over it. He reaches to smooth her hair back with a careful gloved hand. ]

How's the pain right now?

Like... a four? A five? It sucks.

[She reaches for his hand.]

That means I'm tough.

[ Wash quirks an eyebrow even as he lets her take his other hand, the helmet and jacket already set on the chair beside the cot. ]

Choosing to deal with unnecessary pain isn't tough. It's unnecessary.

I know, I know. I just didn't want a bunch of people scolding me.

I've been trying very hard not to but you realize the person least likely to scold you in this situation is the most capable healer, right? You'd've been better off telling me and Lance to fuck off entirely.

[She grins, kicking at his leg again.]

Okay, fine, fuck off.

Too late, you're stuck with me. I know you don't mean it anyway.

Yeah? How do you know?

Because you're smiling at me. And getting fake-violent, when you're actually angry you'd never lay a finger on me.

[Kyna immediately tries to wipe the smile off of her face.]

Pfft, you don't know anything about me.

[ It's not working. ]

I don't? Nothing at all?

Nope. I'm mysterious.

[She reaches for his hand.]

How many bones have you broken?

Uhh... you won't like this answer, but I've lost count. I can probably tell you which ones I've broken, but not how many times or even where exactly. The armor stabilizes that kind of thing, administers treatment even before I got a healing unit.

Oh my god. How much of you is metal?

Not much, usually healing aids did the trick. I've only got a few plates. Almost everybody does--

[ He's cut off by a soft knock at the door, and glances to Kyna to say whether or not it's okay for someone to come in. ]

[Kyna nods, sitting up again.]

You can come in.

[ When he hears the okay from inside Pell cracks the door just enough to slip in, closing it back behind him and offering the patient inside a smile. ]

Hello, Kyna. Washington.

[ He closes the distance to the young woman on the cot, who'd proven an excellent patient last time around. He's not worried about handling this, though he does look a little stressed. This is his first injury-heavy emergency since taking over the clinic and already there's someone that didn't get saved. Not that it's anyone's fault, but... well. He was watching the network in between patients and has already tried to call Harlan. But he won't bring that up obviously. ]

Lance says your arm is broken, may I take a look?

Um, sure.

[She offers him her arm carefully.]

Are you doing okay?

[ That gets a soft tsking sound -- more at himself than Kyna, for letting his emotional state show. ]

I haven't overextended myself or anything, if that's what you're worried about. I'm just... it's the situation. The new creatures, all of that. This is my first emergency in charge of something.

[ There's a certain depth of meaning there beyond the words, too, if she'd pick up on that. But for not he's gripping her arm very gently, trying to get a sense of how bad it is. ]

The good news is this was well-set. The bad news is it'll take me a bit. You might want to get comfortable.

[Kyna smiles when Pell tells her it was well set, turning to blow a kiss at Wash before replying.]
