There's a rumbling sound in the air early in the afternoon on December 26th. Whether you're new in town or you've seen it all, something like this hasn't happened before. Is it an earthquake? It feels kind of like a small one, and that might be endurable if not for the sudden snarling and gnashing of teeth!
As it turns out, these yet-unnamed apex predators are overrunning the city, ignoring their previous apprehension to barrel right through anything- or anyone- that stands in their way. Seemingly spooked by something, they are aggressive and violent and won't hesitate to tear anyone they meet to pieces... after trampling them underfoot, of course. They're so large and muscular that they may even take a few portions of buildings with them- how would you like to see one of these monsters crashing through your living room?
At least it's only these weird mammoths, though... right?► This log covers December 26th-December 28th.

cecily trevelyan ; ota
Maker's ass. [ Do gods have asses? No time to figure it out! She dashes ahead, gripping tight the handle of the blade as she goes. This is a terrible idea, because she's tiny compared with such a creature, but there aren't a lot of options. This thing can't go on rampaging anywhere near the residences, and that seems like its intended course of action. ]
Over here, you hairy monstrosity! [ It doesn't exactly follow the sound of her voice, though, and so she has to do something she's been practicing: throw the knife from a distance so that it sticks into the leg of the beast. She breathes a sigh of a relief as this seems to get its attention...and causes it to turn toward her instead, with her own weapon stuck in its flesh. ]
Shit. [ Good one!! Think fast! ]
no subject
once she sees what's happening, she and Chance break out in a run to join Cecily and Pup, unsheathing her blades as she runs. each blade radiates cold even more chill and freezing than the temperatures here and are also augmented with runes to try and paralyse an opponent. she hopes it will be enough as these creatures are even bigger than bereskarn.
Chance runs to Cecily's far right, barking furiously to try and get the creature's attention and Mariane continues running towards the creature, sword and dagger low in an attempt to cut the creature's front legs to cripple it.
the strike hits its mark and it's left staggering, but she's left tumbling aside to avoid being trampled by the creature.
she gets to her feet as quickly as she can and follows after it]

She spots the lumbering mammoth before she sees Cecily but the other woman quickly becomes her center of attention the moment the rogue rushes to action. Her heart pounds with panic and an urge to call for help blinds her momentarily before she drops her backpack in a sudden sense of action, panic becoming a secondary emotion to the immediate fight response at the possibility of Cecily getting smashed.
Fires hum to life in the air around Sharon as she gets close, letting her emotions guide them. She's not as skilled with a blade as her friend, nor does she think she can throw her knife hard enough to damage the hulking beast; the only thing she has that may be of help, even if she can only manage to frighten it back, is fire. Most animals know to avoid fire.
She whistles to try and catch the monster's attention, to force it to consider its options as Sharon stands nearly opposite to Cecily, which would give them both enough time to plan their next course of action. She lets her eyes meet Cecily's briefly, a way to show the other woman she has her back.
The two of them can manage this, right? ]

Not having nearly enough arrows to waste shooting each of these rampaging beasts: not so good.
Kate would quite happily toss heavy rubble at the heads of the predators, but Hadriel even got rid of that, so instead she leaves her bow unstrung for the moment and whips out a length of rope. (That ever-present bag on her thigh sure comes in handy sometimes.) She waits. And waits. And it isn't until the beast is nearly at Cec's feet that she yells: )
Catch!

These predators are a hard thing to miss, and he spies Cecily a moment after his attention falls on it. She'll need to think fast, but Ignis is no stranger to that either, and as the beast sets its course towards the young woman a shout of 'shield your eyes!' precedes a sphere-shaped missile arcing through the air, hitting the ground directly in front of the oncoming creature. Immediately on impact, it explodes in a flash and erupts into a ball of charged lightning that crackles over the ground and sends electric tendrils snaking through the air.
A weapon - a slim polearm - appears in Ignis' hand in a shower of sparks as he closes the distance between them.]
I'd say you got its attention. [He glances down at her, the faintest smile tilting his lips. Well, he didn't do a bad job of doing just that, either.]

Keith | Voltron: Legendary Defender
you know what this is B)
And then there's that noise. Steak grunts and nods his answer, barely sparing a second before he charges off in the direction of the noise, ready to stop whatever might be there.
They look nothing like the predators stampeding through the city, act nothing like it either. This isn't wanton destruction of the city, this... appears to be teamwork of some description. His foot digs into the ground, boot scraping against dirt, casting a glance at his new partner as the other person disappears — teleports, rather more accurately — and exhales. )
Let's go.
( He doesn't know what they may be, but he doesn't need to know that to know that they're trouble anyway. Swords raised, he charges into the fray, aiming for the closest one with a forceful slash. )

Kettara Bloodthirst | ota
[ The ground shakes beneath her feet and Kettara growls, lifting her weapons. She can hear the approach of animals, can feel it rumbling through the ground. She thinks of how the kodo back home would stampede, crushing all in their path, and how she used to run with the wolf riders to direct the chaos even as a young child.
This, at least, is familiar. She murmurs a prayer to her ancestors, thanking them for their wisdom, and shifts into her ghost wolf form.
A silvery, translucent wolf darts among the changing beasts. Should anyone become trapped, the wolf will dart in front of them and transform suddenly back to a young orc woman, weapons drawn. ]

One of the fences surrounding the range is demolished where they'd pushed their way through, but a lot of blood on the ground is evidence enough that Pratt didn't let that go unpunished. He hasn't managed to kill any of them, but there's quite a few injured ones now somewhere else in town leaving a trail of blood behind them.
It was enough of a warning to keep the rest of the herd from following and completely trampling his tiny shooting range. But this new stampede hadn't seen that, and now he's going to have to do it all over again.
He sees the silvery wolf darting among the tightly packed, frightened beasts, and he frowns. Not exactly who he wants to see right now.]

Scott Ryder | ota
[Scott had already been nervously keeping an eye on those mammoths and their little too close for comfort proximity to the city. Being a recon specialist for the Initiative and now Pathfinder he's able to notice things about a planet; the wildlife, especially, though he thought at worst a couple would try and muscle their way in at different points in the city. But when the ground begins to rumble one day while he's just patrolling the streets his heart immediately pounds in his chest as he looks over in the distance.]
Oh shit.
[He takes a step back, glancing around his immediate vicinity for anyone who maybe hasn't noticed them yet...or has. These things are huge but they're fast, and while Scott is semi-confident he can get to someplace safe he's uncertain about anyone else in the area.]
Shit, shit, shit—
[...Which is why, if you're near him, he's diving in close and holding his arms out above his head. His body glows in a brilliant blue as a bubble of energy surrounds him and whomever's in the area. As the creatures reach them they seem to bump into the bubble but not breach it, but since Scott is used to holding off bullets and not actual giant mammoths he knows he can't last long holding this thing up, evident by the way he grits his teeth and his entire body strains.]
...Uh, hi. Need some help?
[Because now you have it???]
sometime later
[Scott has been trying to help people where he can. These things are barreling through buildings though and knocking down anything that has the nerve to stand, so finding safety is proving to be a bitch. That's why he has shifted his focus towards taking them out where he can. Occasionally he'll use his assault rifle or pistol — which packs a powerful punch, but wanting to preserve ammo most of the time he gets down in the thick of it with his sword.
He uses his biotics to dodge and weave around the mammoths, sometimes just a glowing blue blur as he appears and disappears, stabbing at the predators and slicing when he can. He can feel his energy reserves emptying but he keeps going. He could certainly use the help.]
Don't these guys get tired?!
later
and she uses stealth to seeminly disappear and reappear at will, striking blows to the creatures' weak points (as far as she's been able to determine) with her sword and dagger. she shows no mercy as she does so]
It seems not. I suppose that means we're not allowed to get tired, either. [enjoy that, it was her attempt at a joke]

Connor | OTA
But then again, he's not a complete idiot, and so he's getting some observing in first. No better place to do that than on top of a roof, right? So he's found a nice low rooftop to climb onto, curiously watching the nearest animal rampage around, and then said animal decides to go crashing into the building he's standing on.
Normally that wouldn't exactly be a problem, but there's the unfortunate combination of that these creatures are apparently strong enough to damage buildings, and that despite being an ultra advanced detective prototype Connor is not the most coordinated android ever. The impact is therefore more than strong enough to shake the building, which in turn sends Connor tumbling off the roof and onto the ground.
It doesn't hurt, and he's not damaged any worse than the equivalent of a few scrapes, but he is now on the ground right next to something with a bad attitude and whole lot of teeth. Oops.
He scrambles back on the ground a little, trying to pull out his gun, and although he'll definitely be able to get a shot off at the thing before it attacks he could till probably use an assist.]

It has not been a good couple of days. Ephemera hasn't been sleeping well. He hasn't been drinking because he's on duty, so to speak, and instead he's been chain smoking. And pacing.
He doesn't say a word. Just walks straight up to the creature, headless of its size, and lifts up his arm. Aims it directly at the animal's face. Activates the weapon.
The smell is awful. The noise the creature makes is worse. But it runs.
Ephemera exhales. Tips his head back to glare up at the sky. Sometimes, when he's in a very bad place, setting things on fire makes him feel a little better. Today is not one of those days. Maybe the sadism has left or he's just too goddamn tired to care one way or another. ]

Terrence Ephemera | ota
[ Well, this is is new.
Ephemera is currently sitting behind a large pile of rubble that not so long ago used to belong to a storefront. He's fully engrossed in his work, which involves a small screwdriver and a component he's reattaching to his gauntlet. Someone's flamethrower needs to be tuned up.
Though not ignorant of the chaos going on around him, Ephemera doesn't seem particularly concerned by any of it. He'll acknowledge anyone who approaches him with an annoyed sigh. ]
What?
Two
[ Fire is elemental, did deeply into the collective consciousness or lizard brain or whatever these things have going on. No matter how big an animal, no matter how smart a person, something in them still goes fire bad at the first spray of napalm.
Ephemera is in his element, blasting fire from both hands with calculated intensity. He's wandered out away from the buildings, clad in full armor, and intending to head off as many creatures as he can from the populated areas.
He's got a shield, his rifle, and the flamethrowers. And seemingly no fear whatsoever of being pulverized. ]
Bring it, motherfuckers.
Wildcard
[ Hit me! ]
two;
He's got reason to worry.
Wash is in armor for once, too, a rare sight these days but a mammoth-thing can't hijack him so it seemed a worthwhile risk for the advantages. Which also means he himself is a little less afraid of the fire as he rushes out too, to flank Ephemera. ]

Peter Goddammit Parker | OTA
[Thanks to his super neato spider senses, Peter feels trouble coming before it's literally stampeding down the streets. Unfortunately, there's not really a whole lot that can be done by way of preparation for a sudden flash flood of mammoth critters even with a little forewarning, but he can at least give whoever's nearby a heads up.]
Hey, uh. So you know that old Disney movie, The Lion King? Remember that part where the wildebeests are all like, running down that baby lion and then the dad lion gets squashed? I promise I'm going somewhere with this. Basically, there's a lot of something bad coming from that way. Vague, I know, but you should probably get inside.
[He's just staring in the direction of the "something bad" intently. It probably looks kind of weird. That's just how Peter do.]
This is where the fights go:
[Now decked out in all his spider dude gear, it's time to do. Spider stuff.
Spidey's tactics generally lean more towards trying to wrangle as many critters as he can into less populated areas, which involves a lot of swinging around and blocking off paths wth strategically placed walls of web stretched between buildings. It's lookin' real Halloweeny up in here. He hasn't done much by way of mammoth murder, if only because he doesn't want to risk getting too close to those teeth, but he's made some of these creepy things pretty easy pickings for anyone who feels like shooting giant, hairy fish in a web barrel.]
[When he's not wrangling small groups, you bet your ass he's trying to ride one of these things into it's buddies. It's absolutely not working and the mammoth is just charging into a building trying to knock Peter off, but hey. It was worth a shot.]
Wow, I didn't think this through at all. Hey! Nobody do this, it doesn't work!
Goddammit Peter:
[Peter's over the top sense of responsibility is really good for some things, but probably not super great for other things. It drives him to do everything that he can to try to protect other people, but in doing so he's kind of been neglecting his own needs, such as taking friggen breaks before he overdoes it and gets himself hurt.
Three straight days of fighting is a little too much fighting, even for Spider-Man. Needless to say, dipstick over here is exhausted, and when you're exhausted, you make mistakes. Mistakes such as miscounting just how many mammoths you're dropping in on, and not reacting fast enough when your spider sense goes HEY DIPSHIT LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU. The good news is he managed to avoid just getting his head chomped clean off, but the less good news is that this here mammoth has chomped into his shoulder, and all it's mammoth buddies are pissed off from all the webs Spidey shot at them and boy howdy is he ever in a pickle. Are you a bad enough dude to save the
PresidentSpider-Man?]damn it peter
It's kind of like that.
Seeing a massive wolf in the midst of a giant stampede probably isn't reassuring, but at least it doesn't seem all that interested in eating Peter. No, it skids to a halt in front of him, growling low-- and the next time one of those mammoths sticks its head out, it gets its head bit--
Oh. Right off. Oh, god. There's so much blood.
At least that seems to make the others pretty wary. Alucard growls again, low and threatening, before taking a pointed step back. Move, baby boy, they're going to try to put their backs to a wall. His vague plan is to get there and then transform back to a man, grabbing the boy and leaping up to the rooftops.]

Harlan Halliday | closed to Michael | cw gore, blood, death
But, no, this was the right move. He doesn't have enough magic left to use Telepathy now that he's used Teleport, and if he hadn't teleported, he'd be dead already. Michael would be left wondering. Fuck that.
He tries to lift his hoodie to get a better look at what that thing did to him, but the fabric must be embedded too deep; trying to move it hurts like hell. He can see and feel enough to know it's bad, though. He knew it the second its beak caught him. There's no coming back from this. He's already lost a dangerous amount of blood.
Michael should still be home, but given that he hasn't shown up yet, he must not have heard Harlan come in. He can manage a quick Message, he thinks, so he gives it a try:]
I'm in the kitchen. Come here, but don't freak out.
no subject
He's just putting together all his relevant supplies into his briefcase that serves as his doctor bag when he gets the Message. And immediately snatches the briefcase and practically jogs out to the kitchen.
Don't freak out. Right. Failed step one.]

Trafalgar Law - OPEN
[a stampede of large, dangerous animals isn't exactly what he'd call a good day(s), but Law is secretly kind of down for some action. Everything has been base-level survival for a few weeks, the shake-up is refreshing. And hunting has suddenly become much easier.
The bubbles of faint blue aura appear wherever he is, but it's not always to fight and kill. Sometimes it's actually to rescue. While he doesn't care about most people currently in the city, Law knows what a pain in the ass it would be to die right now, so if he sees someone in the direct path of rampaging death, he'll step in. You may not even see the Room swell around you before you're suddenly yanked to a different spot entirely, swapped for a rock or piece of wood on the ground, but you're safe now. Or, it could be that the man with the long sword just shifted himself into your place instead so he could hack off a limb or two. No thanks needed.]
B - I need a healer
[while it seems like a good idea to camp out at the clinic, Law is mobile, heading instantly to wherever he's needed. Sometimes injuries can't wait for transportation, so let the skilled surgeon come to you instead. Just stick out a hand and wave, if you still have a hand to do so.]
kate / ota
( The rooftops of the city remain Kate's favoured way of getting around, even with the chill of this arctic planet leaving a fine dusting of snow apparently everywhere. She hops from one building to the next easily, though nowhere near as quickly as usual, a trail of footprints marking her route from one end of the city to the other.
All in all, the day is like any other. She perches at the edge of a building and stares out at the expanse of frozen wilds beyond the city. One more day of trying to find anything of use, whether beast or vegetation, and fuck knows how long they have to keep doing this. Or whether Sorrow will find the other gods before something finds him.
But she can't concentrate on that now, they can't do anything about that. The only thing any of them can do is attempt to survive this place. To make sure they can eat and drink and deal without all the amenities which the gods provide. All the things people seem to overlook when thinking about being without the gods and their emotional influences. Her fingers run through the quiver of arrows at her waist, counting off the remaining ammunition with a frown. This is becoming a problem, with no new stock in the armoury or trees left in the city. She'll have to play it safe— )
The hell?
( The rumbling reaches the perimeter of the city, a familiar rattling that has her head shooting up at her eyes narrowing. That— Of all the natural disasters on all the planets. Perhaps they're at least fortunate they're no longer underground, she thinks, but that is quickly, quickly proven wrong as the cloud of charging predators reaches her line of vision. )
...Shit.
( She springs to another rooftop and swears under her breath as the first few beasts pour into the city, readying her bow and and arrow to try and pluck one or two of the crowd off. One arrow arcs through the air and hits its target, shattering its skull and sending it careening into the rest of the crowd, driving it into further chaos.
That in and of itself might have been fine, but as she readies her next shot, one of them charges straight for the building she's stood on, turning the walls to rubble and knocking Kate off her feet and into the air.
Well, shit. She barely gets a chance to right herself before she lands on the back of one of the beasts, blindly grabbing at it to keep herself from falling. )
— wildcard;
( After this, Kate can be found throughout the city helping to fight off any of the predators. )

Starscream | ota
Of course Starscream won't be able to keep this up forever but at least he's out of the thick of it and might lend assistance to his fellow robotic compatriots, and unwillingly help out you miserable humans too, if they need any help.
Eventually he'll finally land after the stampede is over and will be grumbling about how of a mess there is but he's also helping to right fallen walls for houses and stuff?! He's just pissed off and glad none of his energon was damaged in all of that. He could care less about anything else, tbh. ]

The hell?
[Overhead, he spots a jet zooming around. Obviously whoever the hell is piloting it is on their side of the fight, but what catches Keith's attention is the sound of fucking laughter that he swears is coming from the jet itself and unless the pilot is quite literally the loudest asshole in Hadriel, he doesn't know what to make of it. Glaring up the sky, he'll try and see if he can identify a pilot or anything. He shouts:.]

kyna midha
[At this point, Kyna doesn't have much of a reaction to the weirdness of the creatures stampeding through the city. She's run into enough oddities at home that Hadriel's monsters roll right off of her. Mostly. What their new mammoth friends do offer her is an excellent distraction from Harlan's death, and an opportunity to make very questionable decisions.
Those who know her, or who know anything about how magic users are supposed to fight, will notice instantly that she's getting in far too close. Magical shields or no, all it will really take is a few good hits from those things to take her out, but she doesn't seem to care. She's not even being particularly talkative, just slinging electricity at everything within reach. She's already bleeding from a wound on her temple, so clearly this is going well. It would be totally fair for someone to tell her how absolutely stupid she's being, but if anyone gets close—]
Hey! What are you doing?
ii
[So, unsurprisingly, a few hours into the fray, Kyna has pulled off to the side, sheltered in an open doorway. Her upper arm has been torn open somehow. It's not terrible, but she's bleeding, and the angle of the wound means she's having a hell of a time trying to fix herself up with one hand. Currently, her master plan involves trying to hold one end of a strip of bandages in her teeth while trying to wrap the rest around her arm. It's not working.]
God damn it.
[Maybe someone with some actual skill or patience could do a better job.]

[It doesn't take Kyna long to find Wash, because of course they're both out here. She's bristling with anxiety and poorly disguised grief, practically bouncing on the balls of her feet as they regroup. She's obviously way too distracted to be out here at all, but... It's fine. She's fine.]
Do you need me to recharge your ring?
1. hey
[He just came out to have a good time and he's feeling so attacked right now? Actually, he came out to see if he could take down a couple of these animals for food and shit, but he's still feeling attacked. How dare she have the gall to backsass him when he's about to drag her out of harm's way.]
Like, three of these things have almost flattened you in the time it took me to jog over here. You need to move your ass.

Jo Harvelle | OTA
The stores are devoid of anything useful. She still goes to look, just in case. The rumbling begins on her way to her home and she starts running toward the noise after a pause to make sure that it's not an earthquake.
When she gets close enough to the edge of town she can see the animals, she stops in her tracks.]
Jesus. [The machete at her side might not do much against these giants. These are too big for her to risk getting closer.
Ammunition is scarce, she's always aware of that, but a gun would be useful here.
She has to get home to get her gun. If she sees anyone-]
Get inside!
Re: Jo Harvelle | OTA
She was leaving a shop when she saw the animals coming at them-the woman only an after thought. Then she presumed to think that she would run off and hide.]
Like hell. [She adjusted her power gauntlets, once more glad they were with her when she first arrived.] Manage to bring one down, you think their meat's edible.

Washington | OTA
By the end of things he's had enough of this shit for sure, of wasting ammo and energy on tactics that aren't working. So he moves to the rooftops and takes careful aim, trying to snipe the front of the herds to just take them out. Hopefully somebody knows how to make jerky because otherwise there's gonna be an awful lot of meat to eat before it goes bad, even in this climate. And in the aftermath, he could use some help skinning and butchering what he killed, because honestly he only has the faintest idea of what he's doing. Somebody help. ]

So, when he sees that Wash needs help, Maine's happy to lend a hand. Hopefully, Wash has a decent knife for the job. Otherwise, Maine's going to have to try using the blade of the Brute Shot, and that's bound to lead to frustration. ]
