Event Log: The Stampede

There's a rumbling sound in the air early in the afternoon on December 26th. Whether you're new in town or you've seen it all, something like this hasn't happened before. Is it an earthquake? It feels kind of like a small one, and that might be endurable if not for the sudden snarling and gnashing of teeth!

As it turns out, these yet-unnamed apex predators are overrunning the city, ignoring their previous apprehension to barrel right through anything- or anyone- that stands in their way. Seemingly spooked by something, they are aggressive and violent and won't hesitate to tear anyone they meet to pieces... after trampling them underfoot, of course. They're so large and muscular that they may even take a few portions of buildings with them- how would you like to see one of these monsters crashing through your living room?

At least it's only these weird mammoths, though... right?

[Lance is quiet at those responses for a few seconds, mentally going over options and assessing the situation and Kyna's mood, trying to come up with the best way to proceed. He glances at Wash to let him know he heard and acknowledges him, even though he addresses Kyna more directly so it's clear the decision is hers.]

I can't fix broken bones. If it's set right, you should be fine to let it just heal until you want to talk to someone with better magic.

[But if it's set properly then there's no reason to have to do it immediately and stress Kyna out any further. He will totally make fun of her later for breaking a bone so soon after they were talking about the subject, though.]

Making sure you don't get an infection or something in the bite's probably the higher priority right now.

[evocation]

[Lance isn't scolding her like she thought he would, so she relaxes. She knows, logically, that she should find someone else to help her, but logic has never really been her strong suit in these sorts of situations.]

Let's do that. Doctor knows best, right?

[It's a lame joke, and it's clear her heart isn't really in it, but she's trying!]

[hardwearing]

[ Doctor does not know best. Maybe boyfriend doesn't either, but Wash doesn't want Kyna walking out of this clinic with a broken humerus. His lips press together in a line but he decides not to argue right now, just rubs his hand on her back a little. ]

Do we need to get her jacket off?

Yeah, you know me and my medical degree.

[He says it lightly, obviously joking in response to Kyna's own terrible joke, though he gives Wash a flat look at his question before looking back at Kyna again.]

Do you mind? I'll be able to see what I'm doing better.

[evocation]

Uh...

[She hates this idea. Hates it. And now Wash and Lance are giving each other Looks and she hates that, too.]

Okay.

[hardwearing]

[ Now they're both pissed at him. Great. He's never been good at this kind of thing, and it's even harder when he's upset and worried. But he can manage this much, and moves to slip Kyna's jacket off her good arm first, then grips her forearm gently and helps her straighten her arm out beneath the bites and break. ]

Deep breath, I'll just slide it off. Nothing will hurt as bad as setting it did, promise.

[Lance stays quiet for the moment, letting them work out what they're doing without interjection.]

[evocation]

[Kyna does her best to look stoic and unaffected, but the moment Wash straightens her arm out, that little facade falls. She grips the edge of her chair with her good hand, biting back a whimper as Wash slides the sleeve off.]

Fuck me. Ow.

[hardwearing]

That's it, you're doing great.

[ Wash leans in a little, kissing Kyna's forehead in an attempt to soothe her before pulling back with the jacket in his lap so Lance can get at her without him in the way. Then he seems to think even better of that and goes around to the other side, taking her good hand and squeezing. ]

[Lance winces in sympathy, watching the two of them carefully in case he needs to do anything, but okay. He can definitely see what he's dealing with better now.]

I'm going to see what I can do with magic, and then figure out what still needs to be done, okay?

[evocation]

Okay.

[Kyna laces her fingers with Wash's, then shifts awkwardly.]

Um... Thanks for helping me, you guys.

[hardwearing]

[ Wash doesn't respond in a way that Lance can see, his hand just tightens on Kyna's as he looks to the other man. Do what you gotta, Lance. Fix her. 8( ]

Yeah, of course.

[Lance says it softly and genuinely, concentrating carefully on his spell and pouring as much energy into it as he can. He's gotten quite good at it, so it's pretty strong for what it is, but there's of course still only so much that can be done.]

[evocation]

[Kyna watches as best as she can from her angle, and she isn't entirely surprised when the bite stitches itself closed. The pain from her arm fades just a bit, too.]

Thanks. [Her voice softens a little.] Did Harlan teach you that?

[hardwearing]

[ It seems like that was a much stronger version of what Wash just managed, so he thinks it was but will let Lance answer. He uses his free hand to tuck a stray lock of hair behind Kyna's ear quietly, looking very relieved that the bite is healed up at least. ]

[He's pretty relieved to have such a good result; it's not at all outside the realm of what he knew was possible, but he rarely practices the spell on serious injuries and so it's hard to really gauge just how much it can do. So Lance is really glad to have been able to actually help, nodding at the question.]

Yeah, Harlan taught me awhile ago, but thankfully I haven't had much need to use it.

[evocation]

[Kyna nods, gaze dropping down to her lap.]

Um... I guess I should tell you...

[She takes a deep breath, her urge to fidget thwarted by the fact that Wash is holding her good hand, and she's too afraid to move her other arm. She chews on her lip instead.]

Something happened to him.

[hardwearing]

[ Again, Wash stays quiet. Lets Kyna handle this one how she wants, Harlan was her best friend. He doesn't try to hide from Lance that he's upset about it too, though -- he and Harlan have made nice, he cares about the guy's well being and now... well.

Now they just have to wait until Hope returns. ]

[Lance goes quiet again at that, although just for a few moments.]

I um, I saw your conversation on the network.

[With the new person that Lance didn't know. It had been easy enough to guess who they might've been talking about from Kyna's responses, but Lance didn't actually know for sure and definitely didn't know how bad it actually was. He can put two and two together from Kyna's tone, though, and Washington's expression is also pretty clear.]

I'm sorry.

[He doesn't say anything about waiting for Hope to come back, and how everything will probably end up being okay, because she surely already knows that and so it's not going to help.]

[evocation]

[That's not exactly surprising. Lance always keeps up with the network, but Kyna needed to make sure. Her vision blurs, and she can't wipe her tears away stealthily, so she tries to ignore it. Surely no one else will notice.]

Me too.

[hardwearing]

[ How would they not notice, Kyna? Wash will just do it for her, then settle his hand on her back again. ]

We'll figure out what got him.

[ It's probably not comforting, but it's all he's got. ]

[Lance definitely notices, but he pretends he doesn't. Instead, he shifts the topic a little--]

You should probably get some rest, and then have someone look at your arm. It'll be fine for a little while, but trust me on not just leaving it that for too long, okay?

[evocation]

Yeah, but if it could take out Harlan that easily...

[That doesn't exactly bode well. Kyna sighs, swallows, and tries to get it together.]

I won't. I just don't want anyone getting all fussy at me.

[hardwearing]

[ Wash doesn't like this. Doesn't want to try and get Kyna home with just a splint, knowing she'll be in pain for probably days before it's safe enough to come back and forth or ask a healer to brave the stampeded streets. His voice is gentle, like it's a suggestion, but he's still going to urge her to be healed at the clinic before they leave. ]

Kyna, please, just get it taken care of now. I'm sure Pell's here. What if there's another wave on the way home?

[Lance is so not getting in the middle of this unless he's asked, and so he takes the moment to wander a few steps away and find a water bottle for Kyna. Everything can be fixed with hydration.]
